Winston-Salem Journal LTE SA 02/02/13

New safety measures
As a card-carrying Republican I want to remind everyone that a five-star general from World War II, Dwight D. Eisenhower, became a Republican president, and at the end of his term warned our great nation of the dangers of a military industrial complex. In my lifetime I have seen this military industrial complex wed the National Rifle Association and launch a most effective disinformation campaign.
The NRA and its corporate spouse, the military industrial complex, have successfully confused a significant percentage of our population by ludicrously pairing the Second Amendment's "right to bear arms" with the alleged right for a civilian to buy and carry assault weapons. I strongly urge your readers to write their elected officials to support the new gun safety measures proposed by President Obama during his Jan. 16 news conference. This includes:
♦ Universal background checks whenever someone buys a gun, whether it is from a licensed dealer or a private seller;
♦ Restoring the ban on military-style assault weapons, and a 10 round limit for magazines;
♦ Improving access to mental-health services;
♦ Increasing funding for school security and safety.
Let’s make our position clear to our elected officials, and do not continue to accept the divisive partisan policies that have made our government anything but effective.

Latest proposal
I was saddened but not surprised by the GOP's latest proposal to cut unemployment benefits. It is totally in keeping with their “steal from the poor to heap money on the rich” policies. To my amazement, they hide behind the robes of Christ and claim to be for "Christian values" while they crush the poor.
Sadly, I have many friends over 50 who have lost jobs and either cannot find a job or have accepted part time or low wage McJobs to survive. Some have lost their homes and much of their savings. Those lucky enough to be 62 have been forced into retirement, depriving society of their wisdom and skills. It hardly seems like a "culture of dependency" to those living it.
Perhaps the rich and their Republican Party lap dogs can use their ample spare time to practice putting camels through the eye of a needle. It is a skill they will need when facing the God they claim to serve.

The difference
Question: What is the difference between shooting at an inanimate, stationary target in a controlled environment under professional supervision and shooting at a moving, heavily-armed deranged individual amid a scene of total chaos and confusion?
Answer: Night and day.

No sympathy
I am responding to the Jan. 27 editorial, "Using finance loophole leads to iffy ethics." In the last paragraph of this article you state: "Legislators are paid miserably." I disagree.
Legislators get their base salary and then they add to that a per diem while they are in Raleigh, including car mileage to and from their homes. This bumps their yearly take to close to and sometimes over $30,000. (Not bad in my book for not working every day of the calendar year. And those who might work close to every day of the year make even more with the extra per diem.)
Most of the legislators have businesses on the side which I am sure they bring home money from. And if legislators are retired from their side businesses, they most likely get a pension every month and a Social Security amount every month.
It is state employees who are paid miserably. If legislators want to whine and cry about their base pay, they do not have to run for re-election. They have no sympathy for the poor, the unemployed, the mentally ill and the elderly in our state, I have no sympathy for them.

  1. Valentines Day is of course 02/14. Do not forget anyone on your list:
An asteroid half the size of a football field will give Earth the ultimate close shave this month, passing closer than many satellites when it whizzes by, but it won't hit the planet, NASA scientists say.
The asteroid 2012 DA14 will fly by Earth on Feb. 15 and zip within 17,200 miles (27, 680 kilometers) of the planet during the cosmic close encounter. The asteroid will approach much closer to Earth than the moon, and well inside the paths of navigation and communications satellites.
"This is a record-setting close approach," Don Yeomans, the head of NASA's asteroid-tracking program, said in a statement. "Since regular sky surveys began in the 1990s, we've never seen an object this big get so close to Earth."

  3. Bucky, I'm glad you keep bringing up Jerry Sandusky. It reminds us all just how depraved married old white Republicans can be, along with Joe Pa who covered for him, and Otis O'Neal Horsley of Georgia. Horsley is why we keep P-Donk, our miniature Mediterranean Donkey far away from Republicans.

    1. The reason I bring up Jerry Sandusky and his hideous prior behavior is because there are these knuckleheads in the world, like Rush-in a comment last night, that don't believe that men or boys can become victims of gay sexual attacks in sports locker rooms/showers.

This is a real problem. And for the liberal news media to belittle and berate people like Culliver (subject of the recent NFL controversy) or any other person that doesn't want to be stared at by a gay person under such circumstances, is outrageous. Would they say the same things if we compelled a woman to shower with men and she complained? No.

This is the ridiculous hypocrisy of the liberal world. It's okay for a person of one sexual orientation to peep or stare at others in showers/locker rooms, but not another?

      What's the word? Pathetic.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver apologized Thursday for anti-gay comments he made to a comedian during Super Bowl media day, saying ''that's not what I feel in my heart.''
''I'm sorry if I offended anyone. They were very ugly comments,'' Culliver said during an hour-long media session. ''Hopefully I learn and grow from this experience and this situation.''
He said he would welcome a gay teammate to the 49ers, a reversal of his remarks to Artie Lange two days earlier during an interview at the Superdome.
''I treat everyone equal,'' Culliver said. ''That's not how I feel.''
He added that he realized his comments were especially offensive to many people in San Francisco and the Bay Area, which is home to a large gay community.
''I love San Francisco,'' Culliver said.

Some people want to learn and grow from their past mistakes, some don't. I wish him the best.

    6. I dunno guys…there's some pretty dangerous outfits on that list…commie based groups that right from the start have been out to bring down America.

For starters, look at all the children's advocacy groups. Is that crazy? Children don't have rights. Only we white, Anglo-Saxon, protestant men have rights. The only rights that children have are to be spanked, whipped, tortured, raped and otherwise disciplined and sometimes killed by those of us (WASP males) who are wise.

And then there are all the crazies: the AMA, the AFT, the AMA, the ANA, the APA…not a sane person in any of them…and that's just the "As".

Omigod, the Church of the Brethren. Do you realize that there are at least three of them within spitting distance of downtown W-S, in Eden, Mt. Airy and Cana, VA??? All dangerous radical non-snake handling Christians…the most dangerous kind.

The General Federation of Women's Clubs. There is a historical marker on Main Street commemorating the foundation of the NC Federation right here in W-S. These demonettes have been working for over a century to bring America to her knees.

Oh shxt, the League of Women Voters. That pretty much does it. Does no one know that no less an authority than the great Rush Limbaugh has stated more than once that allowing women to vote was the beginning of the end for the USA?

Uh oh! The United Methodist Church! When John Asbury came through this area in the 1780s, the Moravians spotted him for an apostate right off the bat, spreading that heretical Wesleyan stuff. And they had proof, because Moravian young adults liked it! Satan never sleeps.

But they saved the best for last. The YWCA. How can I convey how dangerous they are? Have you ever been to the YWCA? I didn't think so.

I was just in the new one down near the School of the Arts the other day. It made me want to vomit. In the men's locker room, openly gay guys were leering at will, and Jack and Tommy and Bill, as well, with no restraint. And when I peeped into the women's locker room, the exact same thing was going on. And someone told me that some of those men and women were making "assignations" for later. I'll have to look that up.

I tell you, I am on my knees right now thanking god and the NRA for warning us about all these destroyers. You should be too. In fact, if you don't get on your knees pretty soon, I'll bring my guns over to your place and make you.

  5. It's sadly ironic that women, overwhelmingly, want restrictions on assault weapons when they are probably the least likely to be used in attacks on women. Both handguns and knives are the probable weapons in those type of attacks.

This goes to my theory that many of the people, in here and elsewhere, really don't know what they are talking about when they talk about an assault weapons ban.

Even our favorite 'juvie' court expert, Rush, tends to twist, manipulate and otherwise distort gun stats relating to the matter. And our favorite NW is suppose to be an officer of the court? Hee Hee...so much for that!

Few people can objectively discuss laws that relate to the deaths of children. If you've ever seen a dead child, it's incredibly different than seeing an elderly person dead.

That's the problem. Instead of taking a step back and waiting until emotions cool, and then discussing the issue, Democrats are hell-bend on making new gun laws whether they'll be effective or not. It's the old attitude of let's do something.

I've been there. I've done the similar things. It doesn't make it more right when we do such foolish things though. We always end up with the same results, and we foolishly say, what happened?

    LEWIS CAUGHT LEERING

New Orleans (AP) - All-Pro linebacker Ray Lewis was caught peeping at quarterback Joey Flacco's helmet in the Baltimore Ravens' locker room yesterday. He was turned in by his own daughter, Diamond Desiree Lewis.

New Orleans police arrested Lewis, but since it is almost certain that pundits will turn this into a federal case, he is likely to be handed over to the FBI this afternoon. He is being held without bail and is under a suicide watch.

If convicted, Lewis could face a stiff sentence, possibly up to ten years of derision and ridicule. He would also have to register as a pervert whenever he changes address.

"I don't know what came over me, " Lewis said. "Joey's locker door was ajar, so I just peeped. I'm so ashamed. I have disgraced my team, my family and the citizens of the United States."

Flacco refused to comment, but the disgusted look on his face said more than words.

Lewis's status for tomorrow's Super Duper Most Important Game In History Bowl XLVII is unknown.

    2. FLACCO, LEWIS OUT OF SB XLVII

      New Orleans (Huffington Post)

At a tearful press conference, Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joey Flacco announced that he would not play in tomorrow's Super Duper Most Important Game In History Bowl XLVII. "I just can't do it, I just can't do it," he kept repeating over and over.

Earlier in the day, at the Orleans Parish Jail, Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis was transferred from local custody to the US Marshals Service. As expected, as soon as they had determined that Lewis was a Democrat, Fox News turned his local arrest into a federal case. A spokesperson for the US Marshals Service told reporters that no bond had been set and that Lewis would not be able to attend tomorrow's SB XLVII.

In a further development, Lewis's daughter, Diamond Desiree Lewis, admitted to FBI interrogators, after being waterboarded for two hours, that she saw her daddy put his hand into Flacco's locker and fondle his helmet. The additional charge of fondling could more than triple Lewis's punishment if found guilty, from ten years to more than thirty years of derision and ridicule, with the additional possibility of scorn being added.

Flacco opened his press conference by explaining why he would not be playing in SB XLVII: "Now that Ray has peeped at and fondled my helmet, I could never put it on my head again," he said. "I feel defiled, so I just can't do it."

The Ravens front office offered to buy Flacco a new helmet, but he turned that down. "My helmet is a part of me, just as much as my bottom. I couldn't use something off the shelf, and now that it has been defiled by that pervert, I can't use it either."

The Ravens front office then requested that the NFL give Flacco permission to play without a helmet. That brought a quick "no". "Playing without a helmet is not smart," an NFL spokesperson told reporters. "It can lead to permanent brain damage. We can't have our players walking around talking like Donald Trump or Rush Limbaugh."

As everyone knows, Limbaugh was unable to fulfill his dream of participating in the Vietnamese conflict after being classified 4F by his local draft board. The classification was given for head injuries received by Limbaugh while playing quarterback without a helmet for his high school football team…at least that is one of his stories.

    4. FLACCO TRADED, LEWIS DROPPED

      New Orleans (Reuters)

The Baltimore Ravens announced moments ago that quarterback Joey Flacco has been traded and that linebacker Ray Lewis has been dropped from their roster.

Ravens president Richard Cass said that Ray Lewis has embarrassed the team and has been given his unconditional release. "I am ashamed to have ever been associated with a helmet peeper and fondler," Cass said. "I hope that Ray Lewis rots in hell."

Rotting in hell is probably not an option, since the high temperatures would quickly reduce any organic material to mere dust.

Cass went on to say that the Ravens, suddenly in need of a quality quarterback, had traded Joey Flacco to the Pottsville Maroons for superstar Stan Cofall. Cofall is expected to report tonight and will be on the field for the start of SB XLVII.

      UPDATE

Oops…sometimes when things get moving too fast, mistakes get made. A spokesperson for the Baltimore Ravens has just announced that the trade between the Ravens and the Pottsville Maroons has been aborted.

The Ravens made the move when they discovered that Stan Cofall has been dead of over fifty years. To give the Ravens credit, a living Cofall would have almost ensured them the SB XLVII win.

Cofall led the Pottsville Maroons to the 1925 NFL championship…ignore the fact that that championship was later stripped for skullduggery. The Maroons moved to Boston in 1926 and were dissolved the next year.

Cofall, a legend in his own mind, also coached the 1928 Wake Forest College football team to an illustrious 2-6-2 record. He is not a member of any known Hall of Fame.

Ravens president Richard Cass was not available for comment, so some poor expendable girl who just graduated from college a few months ago got stuck with making the announcement.

A source familiar with the inner workings of the Ravens front office told Reuters that the Ravens are currently negotiating with San Jacinto Community College in Houston in hopes of making another trade before the midnight deadline. Stay tuned.

As always, Tiny is blowing smoke out his wrong end.

By far the most common weapon used to attack women are the fists, hands, feet and other body parts of their husbands/boyfriends/fathers/brothers. Handguns and knives are not even on the radar.

Sleazy men (no need to define that term with a resident example on hand) also use other weapons to inflict physical, sexual, emotional, verbal and economic violence upon their wives/girlfriends/daughters/sisters.

One in four American women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime.

As if that were not bad enough, millions of children witness these acts of violence every year; many become abusers themselves in later life. Even if they don't, the psychological damage done to them is a major contributing factor to societal problems of all kinds.

States with poor levels of higher education, such as Mississippi, Carolina (South), and, soon to be, thanks to our new Republican governor (Art Pope) and state legislature, Carolina (North), are at a distinct disadvantage.

In-state tuition is intended to raise the level of education in the state and is based on where people live and pay taxes.

Illegal immigrants pay local and state taxes just like citizens do. Since they are not going to be leaving anytime soon, it is in the state's interest to improve their educational level as much as possible.

The pro–gun control group is fragmented whereas the pro-gun rights voice is united and strong. Of the top influencers on the pro-gun rights side, the majority of the most prominent voices are from the NRA. The pro-gun control voice is split between Obama and several gun control advocacy groups which dilutes the message.

    8. It's in Santo Domingo-sorry. The Dom Rep is a pretty big place.

    9. indeed, the Dominican Republic is quite large, occupying about a third of the square mileage of the state of North Carolina. So if you have never ventured outside your mama's basement before, you might get lost there.

Santo Domingo, founded by Bartholomew Columbus in 1496, is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas. As such, it offers the visitor a rich and deep opportunity for exploring history. Of course, if you are a sort of human toad, you would go there for other reasons, having to do with your sexual deficiencies back home.

In 1526, Lucas Vasquez de Allyon, a justice of the supreme court in Santo Domingo, sent a settlement expedition of several hundred people and livestock to the Cape Fear region of the future North Carolina. Due to a number of problems, including hostile "Indians", disease, insects and poisonous snakes, the venture failed, with only a few of the people returning to Santo Domingo alive. That was 59 years before the infamous "Lost Colony". Archaeologists are still trying to find that site.

The second oldest Spanish settlement site, now found and being studied, was Fort San Juan, established by Captain Juan Pardo from Santo Domingo in 1567, 18 years before the so-called Lost Colony. It is located near Morganton, NC.

I find it amusing that when Santo Domingo comes to mind that lowlifes think only of their unrequited lust. You cannot get much shallower than that.

And at least he can string a sentence together.

    1. Thanks Hatchman. I like you too.

Hey, did you hear about your buddy, Sen. Menendez(D)? Looks like he may be in big trouble for rolling around with some prostitutes in the Dom. Rep.

Hee Hee...liberal Democrats are always up to something, and it's usually no good.

    2. Better read up on federal statutes 18 U.S.C. 1591, 2421, 2422, and 2423 if you're going over seas Democrats.

Plus, the age of consent is higher for homosexual contact in some countries. FYI.

But liberals, they never listen. They'll get themselves in trouble someway or somehow. It's just in their blood. Hee Hee.........

    3. Well, that's a big surprise! Tiny is an expert on age requirements for homosexual contact overseas.

Hey, he doesn't want to get arrested for paying rentboys at El Gato Negro down in the ABCs.

It would save on all that expensive travel to just walk out of the closet (free). Who knows, he might find some really desperate guy.

  10. Sometimes almost forget our raison d'être…the LTEs.

If we made a rule that no one could post until they responded directly to the LTEs, we would get rid of at least one fool.

LTE #1 - Mostly in agreement.

The NRA has become the handmaiden of the gun industry, and the Republican party has become the handmaiden of defense, where billions are wasted every year on unneeded and ridiculous weapons.

Unfortunately, many are making their positions clear to elected officials and being ignored.

LTE # 2 - The new governor and his henchmen in the legislature are fools in thrall to the lowest common denominator in the electorate. Fortunately, that will lead to a very brief time in control of the state. They had their chance and blew it on stupidity…the hallmark of today's GOP.

LTE #3 - Jack Lucas is the son of the youngest man to receive the Medal of Honor in the 20th century, Marine Private Jack Lucas from W-S, who at age 17 threw himself on a Japanese grenade in February, 1945 on Iwo Jima. A few months later, his neighbor from Davie County, my cousin Major Tom Ferebee, dropped "Little Boy", the first of two atomic bombs ever used in combat, on Hiroshima, thus saving millions of lives.

Jack and I are both lucky to have known both his father and my cousin, and thus know more than most about how war and violence works.

His conclusion, "night and day" is the ultimate answer to all the stupid gun nuts who think that they are Billy the Kid. Let us hope that they never have to find out that they are not.

LTE #4 - In the original state constitution, the NC legislature was restricted to one session every two years. There was good reason for that…whenever the legislature was not in session, they could not be doing damage to the citizens of the state. Those days are long gone.

    Finish The Thought

The new bipartisan push for immigration reform will end up where all others have…in the end, the rightists will cave to the morons and nothing significant will happen. On and on...
