Sum It Up
On Thursday we asked the Sum It Up question: Are you satisfied with the results of the 2012 elections? We ran several responses Monday. Here are more replies:
Yes, it turned out like I thought it would. No surprises this time.
WILLIAM SAMS
I am satisfied that the president was re-elected. But the election has not assuaged the acrimony nor solved the gridlock of the last Congress. Let us hope that the looming “fiscal cliff” concentrates minds on both sides of the aisle.
JOHN HARRISON
Yes. What’s not to like? Fox News shown to be the clown act it is. Nate Silver, Josh Putnam (Davidson College professor) and Chris Lahane destroying Karl Rove, Dick Morris, Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Newt Gingrich and George Will.
A bunch of old white guys blowing hundreds of millions of dollars for no return. Women and minorities getting that revenge vote against the right. A completely fractured and humiliated Republican Party. Mitt Romney being taught that he may be able to buy any house in the United States except the one at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, D.C. Yep, I’d say I’m pretty satisfied.
KAM BENFIELD
Yes, I'm happy with the results of the presidential election. In his re-election speech, President Obama spoke about moving beyond war, “to shape a peace that is built on the promise of freedom and dignity for every human being.” Could anyone disagree with that goal?
CHARLES E. WILSON
After this election, I am one of those wondering if the tipping point where the takers outnumber the makers has been reached; where the idea of living within the nation's means is now considered a quaint concept held only by silly old men. I will make a prediction. Within the next two months, a Democratic operative will mail in the first “I hate Rep. Virginia Foxx” letter to the Journal.
CLINT JOHNSON
We can certainly be proud of North Carolina for supporting conservative candidates who will be fiscally responsible. However, the nation is in for a rude awakening as President Obama grows our government even larger.
He somehow convinced half the electorate that the only thing causing the rise in the deficit was that the wealthy did not pay their fair share. It has been reported that if he raises taxes on the wealthy to the level he suggests, we would only have enough money to run the government for eight days! If he taxed them at 100 percent, it would only raise enough money to run the government for 90 days! Does that sound like a solution?
He apparently skipped economics in college, as he has no concept of how to grow the economy, or else ruining our economy was his agenda from the beginning. America missed its chance to have a leader who knows how to create jobs and had the evidence to prove he could do it.
JOANN DUNN
I am forced to be a Libertarian/Independent and Tuesday proved it. I want the government to fix its fiscal problems and stay out of my life.
Some people think my openness to immigration, choice and gay marriage is “liberal.” It is not. It is the true conservative approach of recognizing your rights end where mine begin and vice versa.
About 100 million people voted, another 90 or so million, according to USA Today, did not. The ones that voted probably know more about the Kardashians than they do about Dodd-Frank, the Simpson-Bowles Commission or the Electoral College.
The Republicans are better able to fix the fiscal, but while trying to reduce government, they extend control into other areas and refuse to see that America has changed demographically. They need to expand their base or they will join the Whigs and Bull Moose Party in the history books.
The Democrats have the innate ability to buy votes with other people’s money. When the money runs out, they have nothing left to offer except blame.
When the Roman Empire was collapsing, the emperors decided to keep the people in line with bread and circuses.
Well, I guess I will have Ringling Bros. on whole wheat toast, please.
KEN HOGLUND
The country is making some long-term decisions by the way we’re dealing with our politicians. We’ve changed a few of the players, but basically sent back the same crowd that has done nothing for the past four years.
Doris Kerns Goodwin said at a talk she gave at the Stevens Center several weeks back that the issue is none of these politicians live in Washington anymore. During the time of LBJ, a Democratic senator would live next door to a Republican senator. Their children grew up together, they really knew each other. With the jet age, all of them live in apartments, fly home on the weekends and never really get to know their counter-parts. They see this as a philosophical war and the general citizenry are the losers. They are all talking nice right now and saying the right things, but they continue to make the expedient decision at the expense of the future. I can only hope that in two years or four years, we can slowly make changes.
They need to remember some of the lines of Robert Fulghum’s “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten.”
JIM MONROE
My private health plan sent out a flyer yesterday stating the changes in my plan for 2013.
ReplyDeleteNumber one on the list was: All women's preventative health exams are now free, including all birth control related services.
That's all fine and good, but what if you're not female? I guess that's just another form of discrimination that the liberal left has created as a result of the passage of Obamacare.
We're suppose to have a more 'fair' society as a result of all this preferential treatment that minorities, women, and certain groups receive. How come I feel like our country is more sexist, racist, and discriminatory each year the Democrats make 'changes'?
Bucky, everyone benefits from women's birth control (birth control does not equal no birth) related services being covered as preventative care as women are the only one's who can bare children. Without women there would be no men, so your sex does benefit from these covered service. Also everyone must share in the burden of feeding, educating and providing health care for unintended pregnancies, and it is a family economic issue.
DeleteIt is fair for women to have reproductive control of their bodies and therefore their income producing protential.
Maybe O.T. or Bob can come to my rescue and provide a better structured logical argument. I've got to go to work so I can pay the taxes to support all the desired and forced birth children that we together must support when their parents are unable.

DeleteNice Bob. But I was talking about changes in relationship to Obamacare.
DeleteI have little doubt that our health care system is going to take a dump because of Obamacare.
When you have a person, such as Rush's sister- Nancy Pelosi, babbling on about we have to pass a bill to find out what's in it, you know it's probably not in the country's best interest.
Wordly, I guess it's also good for men that women have the final decision to abort or keep a man's child or not too?
DeleteThe Boy Scouts should be disbanded as an organization.
ReplyDeleteIt's clear there are now so many liberal hate groups that are now targeting the Boy Scouts for prohibiting gays in its membership that the organization should be disbanded.
Homosexual pedophiles seek out memberships in these groups because there are plethora of potential new victims. If the liberal left succeeds in forcing the Boy Scouts to accept gays, who's going to feret out the good gays from the bad? After it's too late, and children become victims?
The Boy Scouts recently released documents that revealed thousands of reports of inappropriate homosexual behavior in the Scouts.
Do we real want to change the Boy Scouts' policy all in the name of political correctness?
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-201_162-57548762/ups-stops-boy-scout-funding-over-anti-gay-policy/?tag=cbsnewsHardNewsFDArea;fdmodule
You would have to look long and hard to find a post containing more misinformation.
DeleteThe reports mentioned were not about Boy Scouts, but about Boy Scout leaders who were pedophiles. Every organization, such as Pop Warner football and Little League baseball, in which adults have authority over boys has the same problem. And, of course, plenty of children get buggered at home as well.
This has nothing to do with the controversy over whether or not the Boy Scouts should allow gay boys to join.
Most business people have more sense than the fools who own Chick-fil-A. UPS's decision is a wise one for the company...only a fool would get their business involved in controversy on purpose.
The Boy Scouts is a wonderful organization, but we can't have organizations being forced to accept sexual deviants into their ranks. That's what the liberal left wants to do to the Scouts.
DeleteThat's why I think the Boy Scouts should be disbanded-for the protection of young boys.
On that same general topic, YMCAs are also facing huge liabilities in allowing gays to dress and undress with heterosexuals. If a homosexual rape were to occur, I think that organization could get sued, big!
DeleteWhat a bloody idiot!
DeleteI figured you'd agree with me Rush. We think a lot alike.
DeleteRumors fly that Obama intends to nominate UN Ambassador Susan Rice, made infamous for her lies about Benghazi to the media and American people, to Secretary of State.
ReplyDeleteYou live for fallaciousness and rumor. It's your manna. I cannot think of one reasoning person who cares about rumors.
DeleteWell, I heard a rumor that Limbaugh was finally going to live up to his promise and move to Costa Rica and that Buckboy was going with him. It's not legeal in CR for them to get married, but they are going to do the Mexican hat dance and then settle down for years of domestic tranquility.
DeleteNow thats' a rumor that I care about.
When Buckboy mentions rumors, he means the never ending babble of his crackpot websites and/or the mysterious voices that he hears in his head.
DeleteIf John Kerry wants it, Secretary of State is his. Chuck Hagel, former Republican Senator from Nebraska, is first in line for Secretary of Defense. Susan Rice is being looked at for the World Bank.
And Buckboy will soon be looking out the drive through window at Chick-fil-A.
John Kerry is actually rumored to be up for Secretary of Defense.
DeleteI hope Obama gets rid of that racist AG Holder. He needs to go.
Why straight men SHOULD support gay marriage
ReplyDeleteBob does that link have any 'Speedo' clad men connected to it?
Delete"He apparently skipped economics in college, as he has no concept of how to grow the economy, or else ruining our economy was his agenda from the beginning. America missed its chance to have a leader who knows how to create jobs and had the evidence to prove he could do it"
ReplyDeleteObama and his cohorts have no need for any of that. They have a printing press, limitless "compassion" and are secure in the belief that an all knowing all caring State can cure all. Wait for the 5 year economic policy plans to be paid for by fiat money.
Good afternoon folks!
ReplyDeleteMore sum it up? And half of those printed are from yesterday! "A bunch of old white guys blowing hundreds of millions of dollars for no return. Women and minorities getting that revenge vote against the right." - Kam remains The Man. Those are the 2 defining moments of this election. Hundreds of millions were poured into the campaign by a few billionaires with the thinking by those on the right that getting conservative whites to the polls would be sufficient to win the election. Even with the numbers staring them in the face by statisticians such as Silver showing that the demographics had changed and Obama's overwhelming support amongst women and minorities gave him the edge, the right still ignored what was reality in favor of their perceived reality.
I'm still amazed at how divorced from reality many on the right become when it comes to facts that do not conform with their way of thinking (as detailed in Frank Rich's column) whether it be the election, GW/CC, evolution, etc..It seems that GWB's "gut feeling" methodology of analysis has become epidemic within the R / right wing ranks.
Even when things don't come out the way people want. That doesn't mean they were wrong in their feelings and positions on certain issues.
DeleteYou must have taken one of Rush's (il)logic pills.
"They see this as a philosophical war and the general citizenry are the losers. They are all talking nice right now and saying the right things, but they continue to make the expedient decision at the expense of the future. I can only hope that in two years or four years, we can slowly make changes".
ReplyDeleteThis is a philosophical war. An extension of the previous generation of Liberty vs Equality...capitalist vs socialist between America and the third world. Now it is between our two parties: Liberty(opportunity)vs Equality(redistribution). Redistribution won this round but the war is ongoing.
Woooooooowie! This general sex scandal story is getting crazy.
ReplyDeleteI'll bet the Secret Service agents that were involved with the putas in Colombia don't feel so bad now.
Kid Rock and Sean Penn Americans a Public Service Film
ReplyDeleteThanks Wordly...a small yet important gem.
Deletedotnet, you need look no farther than The True Believer: Thoughts On The Nature Of Mass Movements by Eric Hoffer. It is the only book that was a required text in more than one of my undergraduate classes, "Abnormal Psych" and "The Dynamics of Politics".
ReplyDeleteWhen it was first published in 1951, it was greeted with puzzlement and a measure of hostility, primarily because many readers could see themselves in the characters portrayed. But one of the first people to read it was Dwight Eisenhower, who at the time was wearing two very important hats, one as Supreme Commander of NATO and one as president of Columbia University. He began sending copies to his friends and recommending the book to colleagues within NATO and at Columbia.
Today it has been reprinted dozens of times and has sold millions of copies and is still as relevant as when it was first published. Then, as now, the same sort of people are the targets, generally those seeking to escape a flawed self by creating an imaginary self (sound familiar?) and joining a collective whole, a whole that often glorifies the past while devaluing the present and substitutes pride for self-confidence, absolute certainty for understanding, denial for truth.
Whether examining the secessionist movement in the South in the pre-Civil War era or the fascist movement in Italy or the rise of Christian fundamentalism or the Republican party of 2012, the mechanisms and the membership are eerily the same. In fact, Hoffer points out that such movements are interchangeable and that members will often flip from one to another without missing a beat.
We saw it all in the last few months.
Amazing....all that jibber jabber, and it's all a bunch of liberal HS. The exact same thing could be said about the Democratic Party and the recent radical liberal movement.
DeleteI'm thinking of going over to Chick-fil-A today. Squawk!
