Winston-Salem Journal LTE's TU 11/08/11

Mean and vicious
The recent column by Jelisa Castrodale in the Journal's relish insert regarding the noise that aggravates people living there and our desire to have a vibrant downtown was over the line, out of bounds and a 15-yard personal foul ("Don't close downtown's window of opportunity," Oct. 20).
As president of the homeowners association, Martha Albertson should have been expressing the view of those homeowners. If not, they can elect another president (what a thankless job). Martha is one of the nicest, most giving people I have ever known and has contributed more to this community than 99.9 percent of the rest of us.
I personally am more aligned with the business side of this issue than the downtown homeowners. Martha and the homeowners may have shown their age a bit when suggesting 11 p.m. was late enough for folks to be around on weekends (it was late enough in our day, now folks don't go out before 10 p.m.).
The column was mean and vicious. I could almost hear the woman writing it chuckling to herself as she got in another zinger that she thought was funny and clever. They were neither, and I found the article basically not very good. She won't make the big time.
This column actually conjured up a vision, to me, of a left-wing Michele Bachmann. That is kinda scary.

Not in favor?
Of all the specious arguments I have ever heard, the letter "Deciding the question" (Nov. 1) is near, if not at, the top of the list. To imply that the Republican-controlled legislature is not in favor of a constitutional ban on gay marriage, that they just want the voters to decide, is a lie. If this question is not on the ballot, then the ban cannot be approved by the voters; so just the fact that it is on the ballot means that the people who put it there want it to pass.
This is so obvious that if they — the legislators and their supporters — cannot see this, they are not capable of rational thought.
To use what other states are doing to advance the letter writer's position ranks right up there with, "But, mommy (or daddy), all the other kids are doing it."
I will agree that it is our privilege to vote. It is also our duty.

Ridiculous salary
Thank you for the information about the $8.8 million salary of Duke Energy's CEO, James Rogers, last year, while Duke seeks an 18 percent raise in rates ("Duke Energy CEO made $8.8M in '10," Oct 29). I woke up in the middle of the night thinking how ridiculous this salary is. It's 220 times my annual salary, but I chose a life of service with a nonprofit, so maybe I'm not a good comparison.
But the highest salaried person I could think of is a friend who as a doctor makes $200,000 a year. Even at that income, my friend would have to work 44 years to earn what Duke's CEO made last year. Put differently, my friend's income amounts to an after-taxes net of about $10,000 per month — that seems plenty to live comfortably — but maybe Duke's CEO really needs his after-taxes $440,000 per month (over $14,000 per day).
Even if we went back to the "communist" days of a 75 percent tax bracket for that income, he'd still net $180,000 per month. So according to current business standards (that a Duke spokesman was using to justify this high salary), one year of a CEO's services equals the worth of 44 years of a doctor's services. No wonder people are protesting at Occupy events around the country, and it's amazing they are, overall, peaceful. They certainly have my support.
Likewise, my deepest thanks to all the folks who spoke up at the hearings about Duke's proposed hikes.

Gay marriage amendment
Marriage is for procreation, not love. Love helps but is not necessary. The Catholic Church will annul any marriage where one of the partners refuses to have children. An annulment differs from a divorce in that it says there was no marriage to begin with.
Before I was married I had the right to marry any eligible female on this planet. Likewise my wife at one time had the right to marry any eligible male on this same planet.
Our gay and lesbian friends were born with this identical right, but they are not content. They want the additional right to "marry" any and every one on the Earth, male or female.

Food for the hungry
It seems to me that Jesus would want the money being used to have his name spoken in Forsyth County commission meetings to be used to buy food for the hungry. Egotism is not something that God would support, but helping others is what he had his son do. Why can't we do that?

  1. LTE #4.....Marriage is for procreation not love? lol, that's a very recent phenomenon. The Catholic Church? The Catholic Church? You would give legitimacy to the policies of the Catholic Church. Do not use condescending terms like "our gay and lesbian friends" what a jerk. In a nation with liberty and justice for all, additional rights for all which would also include you and your wife should be the goal rather than supressing the liberties of a few.

  2. Virginia Republicans thank Soviet communists instead of U.S. Vets:
It's hard to invite controversy by suggesting that U.S. troops deserve praise and thanks. But Virginia Republicans managed to do just that last week; an ad intended to attack Democratic state Sen. Mark Herring for his veterans' services record backfired badly when the central image in the mailing turned out to be a photograph of a former Soviet officer in a soviet military uniform.

-the communists are coming, the communists are coming and we have no idea which ones they are.

  3. lol probably the same nuts that call the president a leftist socialist. They don't even know a communist when they see one in full uniform,

  5. Ridiculous salary. Maybe. What it is though is easy demagogue bait. Next time the CEO gig comes open, the writer needs to tidy up his resume and submit it for the job. I'm sure he will be glad to do it for a paltry 2 million.

  6. Gotta love the Virginia poster. As predicted, the GOP has essentially degenerated into a full-time clown show.

  10. Good afternoon folks!
LTE 1: The article may have been a little over the top, but Miss Castrodale had a valid point: if you want to sleep with the windows up, you're better off in the 'burbs because there IS going to be noise if you live downtown. It reminds me of people who move near an airport, then complain about the noise from overhead jets. What did you expect?
LTE 2: Of course, the R's are in favor of the amendment passing. That's why they voted to put it on the ballot and to be voted on in the primary where there's a hotly contested R nomination vote but no D nomination vote. Guess who'll be showing up at the polls?
LTE 3: When there is a sustained UR in the 10% range and stagnant wages, seeing a utility asking for an %18 increase when the CEO makes $8.8M is going to tick a LOT of people off. It is not unusual for CEO's to make a nominal salary of $1 / yr and receive the rest of the compensation in the form of stock options which are taxed currently at 15%. Under Cain's plan, a CEO could make $15M from capital gains, $1 in salary and owe 9 cents in tax.
LTE 4: Marriage is a contract between 2 parties that can be entered into for whatever reason they choose. If someone wishes to abide by the tenets of one's faith when entering marriage, by all means do so. However, this is a secular state, so any bylaws within marriage contracts should have a secular purpose. Would Mr. Lundergan favor prohibiting anyone who is infertile from getting married?
LTE 5: "Why can't we do that?" Because the behind the scenes way doesn't allow for some to show before cameras what "Great Christians"(TM) they are.

  11. I'm a little tired of this downtown noise business. I live in the heart of the Arts District. Noise from bars and restaurants is a small matter. Noise comes from everywhere, above, below and all around...construction from the new building 91 project in the PTRP, a drag racing team right down the street, airplanes and helicopters, my neighbor singing opera (excellent voice), cats squabbling in the alley. I'm a block and a half from Fire Station #1. You have no idea how often they get called out...24/7...mostly false alarms. Oh, and don't forget the 6-8 trains that come rumbling through at all hours of the day and night, horns blowing at every crossing.

On the other hand, Sunday mornings the silence can be deafening. No lawn mowers or leaf blowers operated by inconsiderate neighbors. Sometimes I can hear the downtown redtail hawks' call from two blocks away.

That is downtown. Don't like it, move. Better yet, don't come in the first place. I hardly hear most of it because my mind is focused on my work or play. I did enjoy the mockingbirds that serenaded me every morning while they were scouting for a nesting site this spring.

  12. Yeah, you also get to enjoy the smell of urine where some wino has peed your building too.

  16. No wonder Buckdorp removed his post about Paula Jones. In it he claimed that the whole world knew all about Paula when Clinton was first elected president, which is, of course, not true. Clinton had been in office for over a year when the Paula story came to light.

And it was the Paula story that led to Clinton's impeachment. Monica Lewinsky had nothing to do with that.

Buckbutt lives in a fantasy world of made up "history".

  17. It's hard to keep all of Clinton's escapades straight.

Gennifer Flowers came forward during Bill Clinton's 1992 Presidential election campaign, alleging that she had had a 12-year relationship with him.[1] Flowers at first denied that she had an affair with Clinton, but later changed her story. Taken from Wikipedia

Facts and information about Clinton's bent penis came out later.
