Who loses?
At this point it appears that the Democrats are in a "win-win" situation and the only dilemma they face is whether to vote for complete socialism (President Obama) or expanded big government (Mitt Romney).
But who loses? The politicians and the so-called 1 percent, who are collaborators, certainly will not. And the poor who are being bought for "bread and circuses" will not, but will continue to eat the crumbs from the table of the previous groups. No, the real losers will be the working middle class.
The middle class is caught up in the everyday struggle to survive and stay afloat, and its members either don't have the time or they don't want to take the time to get involved, and the result will be that the bread-and-circus group will vote for the same group that makes the promise to give them free bread.
Evidently the middle class will be taxed out of existence; then what?

A simple plan
How many idiots does it take to come up with a simple plan ("Pledge policy back on table," Jan. 25)? When I was in school, we recited the Pledge of Allegiance and prayed every morning to start the day. Those who didn't want to pray could either sit quietly or step out in the hall.
No one had any problem with that, it worked fine, no hassle.
Go back to it, quit wasting time and money on all the meetings, lawyers, groups and whatever, making a big deal out of it. You can't please everybody, never could, never will. Have some backbone and do it like it used to be.

Pruning trees
On Jan. 30, the Journal printed an excellent guest column by David Lusk on the practice of pruning trees in Winston-Salem ("Weird trees of Winston-Salem"). I, too, find it most disturbing. What is being done to our beautiful trees is not pruning, but just plain desecration of the trees, besides weakening the trees and shortening their lives. This cutting is done to all kinds of trees, regardless of their age, leaving ugly maimed stubs of branches up in the air.
This kind of cutting is needless work, filling the time sheet of the laborer and the salesman who sells such a needless service. Winston-Salem sadly loses a good bit of its natural charm.

Preserving history
It truly saddened me to read that the UNC School of the Arts could possibly tear down the 100-year-old historic home on Sunnyside Avenue ("Historic house faces demolition," Feb. 4). The home is on the National Register of Historic Places and sits within the Washington Park Historic District.
It amazes me that a city that prides itself on preserving history such as Old Salem might rezone this location and give permission to tear down a perfectly good home that has survived over 100 years and allow UNCSA to build a large storage warehouse right next to an existing home. I hope the Winston-Salem City Council will have the wisdom to come to the rescue and preserve this part of our city's history. Once it's gone, it's gone. We need to preserve our historical neighborhoods for future generations.

Who wins in November? Whom ever is renting the White House will face one immovable fact: that at the end of their 4 year term, as the US debt clock shows, when the next presidential race will be in its final stretch, America will have $24.1 trillion in debt, about $9 trillion more than it does now, against $17.4 trillion in GDP, for a gross debt to GDP ratio of 138.9%. This campaign should be about that problem, which is why we hear about birth control, four points standing in the way of "tax fairness nirvanna". Anything but debating this terrifying future. Who loses? Everyone.
ReplyDeleteLTE #1 - As it is, the top 1% pays an average rate of about 15% in taxes. The middle class pays 20-25%. Whose fault is that?
ReplyDeleteIt is middle class conservatives who start screaming "class war" whenever someone suggests raising the taxes on the 1%. I'm sure that the 1% has a good laugh over that.
LTE #2 - I like this idea...carry me back to old Virginny. While we're at it, let's reinstitute slavery and take away women's rights to vote and own property. Then everything would be peachy keen.
LTE #3 - David Lusk knows more about trees than anyone else around here. Whatever he says goes.
LTE #4 - I must have missed something. The house in question was built around 1920, not 1910. it is not now, nor will it ever be, on the Ntional Register. And according to today's letter, it has now been moved into the washington Park neighborhood.
I thought Rush Limbaugh was the biggest liar in the USA...maybe I'm wrong.
Obama just a made a speech. It could have just as well been President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela speaking from the content.
ReplyDeleteI don't get the Hugo Chavez connection. Please explain.
DeleteThere is no connection...just Zero babble.
DeleteBoy, you can always tell what the political leanings of an LTE writer is by how they try to make their point. Why don't they go right ahead and start by saying "I'm a conservative (or liberal)and I think . . .(fill in the blanks after that).
ReplyDeleteGod bless you Mr. Crews. It's extremists like you who are pushing the GOP over a cliff this year.
ReplyDeletePS: You apparently trust the ultra-wealthy to look after your interests with no government oversight whatsoever. That's cute.
Arthur, don't look for the union chieftains who own this administration to look after your interests, either. They helped ram thru HCR, in your interest, right, then have been getting their unions exempted from its provisions. We hear about the One Per Cent, but there appears to be a favored Nine Per Cent, too. Ah, but in the land of the Left, some folks are more equal than others.
DeleteThe ACA was in my interest for many reasons. Romney said people should be able to fire their health insurance company.
DeleteI hate to break it to you, but the real world doesn't work that way.
A lot of people don't have that option. What if you can't afford health insurance outside of work? What if you have a pre-existing condition and can't be insured on the individual market? Then you're shit out of luck under the old system. The ACA tried to fix that, and institute cost controls to make health care costs more sustainable in the long-term. Unions supported the law, along with other professional orgranizations (including the AMA!). But they just don't have the same power as your Galtian overlords Mike. Not even close. Just ask the line workers in Tobaccoville.
And good night.
Unions supported the law, but want no part of it, kinda Galtian in that way, sort of like Leona Helmsley.
DeleteTobaccoville: those workers are in a buggy whip industry. Surviving workers will retain their handsome pay. Replacement workers will hire in for less. Even the nearly destructively unionized car industry had to shift to that type pay structure. The fact is, the tobacco line workers' compensation is unsustainable.
Good night to you.
Good afternoon folks!
ReplyDeleteLTE 1: The only fed individual tax increase I've seen proposed is on those who make over $250k. There have been proposals to increase taxes at the local level to make up for the shortfall resulting from the high UR. For those with little education or employed in deprecated industries, it's going to be a struggle regardless who gets elected.
LTE 2: The SCOTUS has already said how it should be according to the Constitution. That's the model that has to be followed. Mr. Covington may not be pleased with the SCOTUS model, but you can't please everyone.
LTE 3: An excellent column by Mr. Lusk and an excellent LTE by Mr. Graf. Seeing beautiful trees being desecrated (good terminology) drives me nuts as well.
LTE 4: Another in favor of preserving the house.
A white person is 18 times more likely to be murdered by an African American than vice versa. When is the last time you've heard of an African American that has been charged with a hate crime?
ReplyDelete"Black teens charged with 'hate crimes' " -- June, 2008, Portlandtribune.com
DeleteBlack teen charged with hate crime after posting racial threats on facebook.
This black woman had an accomplice.
Let me know if you need to see more of these.
as I said, Zero babble.
Delete2008, 2010, 2011?................boy, that was just yesterday. I didn't expect much from you anyway chola.
DeleteThey gotta be ROUND! They can't be oval!
Gotta rep that PR Baby!
As always, Zero is blowing smoke out of his bad end.
DeleteAccording to several studies, blacks are 1 1/2 times more likely to be charged with hate crimes than whites. About 15% of those crimes are committed by blacks against other blacks. The others are widely distributed against whites, Latinos, Muslims, etc.
Tim,you didn't say recent. Be more specific. I guess this means you want more. OK, more to come . . .
DeleteYa know, Tim Britton, you really don't have any concept of what a forum DISCUSSION is do you? It goes like this: Person #1 makes a point, expects a rational, civil response. Person #2 counterpoints, expects a rational civil response.
Tim, this forum is not your world, population one. Even in your world of ID there are others, just none like you (thank goodness).
And, Tim Britton, up until now there was no name calling on my part . . .
. . . but it's on again, Tim Britton!!!
Could be Wes Patterson. They both re-emerged at the same time, they're both members of the Newt Gingrich fan club, and they share the same racial resentments.
DeleteSuch people are unfortunately too common, though.
By the way Chola, I let the real Tim Britton know how you've been acting the fool in here. He seems to know of you. Who wouldn't with your predisposition to may a fool of yourself anywhere and everywhere.
DeleteTim, unlike you I have no issues with any one knowing my identity. I've told you before, I'll reveal mine when you reveal yours. and as far as acting the fool goes, I've never been fired as a volunteer for acting the fool.
DeleteNeither have I, fool.
Delete@Arthur: Wes Patterson sounds like he could be Ol' Numbnuts but if you pay close attention Wes Patterson can and does have discussions, as irrational as they are . . .
Delete. . . Numbnuts CAN'T.
Fair enough. It is funny that you can call ole Bucky just about any name in the book, and he actually seems to enjoy it. Call him Tim though, and that hits a nerve.
DeleteWhat a world we live in.
It doesn't really matter to me personally. I just don't think it's fair to assign my post(s) to another person through lies and inference.
DeleteThe sad thing is that most of you have jumped on the 'Chola's' bandwagon. I actually thought some of you were much more savvy, and astute, but obviously, I was wrong. I'm especially disappointed in Bobby.
Tim Britton, obviously you're wrong about everything!!!
DeleteI was right, though. . .
Delete. . . that you couldn't stay gone long.
. . . that when you re-emerged you wouldn't be able to control your signature name-calling.
L-O-L!!! Coming back as "Anony-mouse" is like putting your hands over your eyes and hoping no one sees you!!!
Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha!!!!
I've got an idea for how Zero can prove that he's not Tim Britton. He just claimed above that he knows Tim Britton...sooo, he could get Tim to post here under his real name, explaining how he and Zero are not one and the same.
DeleteThat would work, wouldn't it???
Hugo Chavez is 9 times more likely to be assassinated by a Hasidic Jew than by an Eskimo.

DeleteI removed the "drag queen" comment because it was a stupid and gratuitous non sequitur. It may be noted that that insults are originating from several sources this evening but the drag queen originator has been the most prolific. Let's change channels from "The Bucky Show," which has repelled some viewers, one of whom is only now intermittently returning.

ReplyDeleteSchools teaching common sense: the administration of the local system defies any notion of common sense, thus I don't look for its teaching to be a priority. Someone might note a conflict between theory and application.
As for manners in public schools, the teaching thereof would be contrary to Walter Marshall's perception of "cultural norms," thus the cowardly school board and central office would not dare suggest such.
The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School Board has suspended Mike Muse, better known as the "Texting Christian" and the "Teen Browbeater", for five days.
ReplyDeleteThat will certainly teach him a lesson, won't it?
