Irresponsible cartoon
I am 72 years of age and am an avid reader of newspapers and other print media and have never seen a more inaccurate and irresponsible political cartoon than the one in the Feb. 28 Journal depicting the Republicans' comparative vision for public education as total destruction.
While promoting quality and accountability in the public-school system, the Republican Party also promotes the availability of vouchers via charter schools and private school as a means of providing alternatives for students when deemed desirable due to shortcomings in the public schools to which they have been assigned. This arrangement would assist in the making available of quality educational opportunities for the general population that the Clintons, the Gores and the Obamas have sought for their children in exclusive private schools.

Bost for commissioner
I believe that Forsyth County citizens should be aware of local government issues and its leaders. One reason that I like local politics is that we each have the opportunity to meet many of our leaders and engage in conversations with them.
Every other year, residents have the opportunity to vote for the best candidates to represent them locally on the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners. This year, three of the four District B seats are up for grabs. All three incumbents will run in a race that includes three challengers. The outcome of this election could have significant ramifications regarding the leadership ability and experience that will be available to face issues such as taxation, public-school support and community college growth.
I support John Bost 100 percent for one of the three District B seats. He has the leadership and experience needed for this important position. He has served as a member of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Planning Board, on the board of directors of Leadership Winston-Salem and as mayor of Clemmons. His character traits include integrity, honesty and responsibility.
I have known him personally for several years and have found his guidance and support to be essential to my personal growth and success. I am confident that his commitment to the people of Forsyth County will make him an excellent commissioner.
Please seek opportunities to learn more about his qualifications. He would sincerely appreciate your vote during the May 8 primary election.

Go Graham
Journal, you printed an editorial from The Charlotte Observer saying that evangelist Franklin Graham is guilty of "babble" when he responds to a question about President Obama being a Christian ("Franklin Graham's troubling words," Feb. 27). It is evident that neither the Observer nor the Journal understands what an evangelical Christian is called to do, which is "Go ye therefore into all the world."
Many Christians in our country feel as Graham feels. Obama's 20 years with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright tells us more than we want to believe about him. He doesn't seem to have any religious affinity, and he doesn't seem to love America, either.
He presents a lose/lose situation for America.

Sum It Up
The Sum It Up question from Sunday was: Could America ever have a non-Christian president?
I believe we've already had several. Most notably, Richard Nixon, the ersatz Quaker, who gave that Christian denomination a serious black eye.
ANNE PAISLEY
Thomas Jefferson denied the triune deity of orthodox Christianity and rejected the idea of the divinity of Christ but is considered Christian. Ronald Reagan, the darling of the Christian Right, never attended church, abandoned evangelicals after he was elected and consulted astrologers but is considered Christian. Mitt Romney claims Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, and Jesus Christ is in the name of his denomination, but is he not considered Christian?
KAM BENFIELD
Yes, and there are some who would say our Unitarian presidents, John Adams, Millard Fillmore and William Howard Taft, were not real Christians. When asked to assume the presidency of Yale in 1899, Taft declined, saying: "I am a Unitarian. I believe in God. I do not believe in the divinity of Christ. And there are many other postulates of the orthodox creed to which I cannot subscribe."
BOB BURWELL
Possibly. Should it have? Absolutely not. Heaven forbid!
BOB TANNEHILL
I would answer with two other questions. At one time who would have thought that Americans would elect a Catholic, and who would have thought Americans would ever elect an African-American president? May America continue making progress.
ANNE GRIFFIS WILSON
Lordy Mercy, I hope so. There must be at least a hundred other religions in this world other than Christianity. And I suspect that God loves them all.
CATHERINE W. PITTS
I strongly doubt it will ever happen, given the fact that President Obama has been in office almost four years and yet a sizable portion of the conservatives, including the GOP presidential contenders and noted evangelical preachers, is still questioning his religion, and some tea-party crowds still throw all types of epithets (Muslim, Nazi, socialist, Kenyan anti-colonist, etc., etc.) at him. The vengeance against a believed-to-be non-Christian president is unbelievable.
BOON T. LEE
Yes, but it will take a few more generations. The Flynn effect and the fact that freethinkers/secularists/agnostics/atheists are the fastest-growing spiritual positions offer some hope for the future. Ancient Bronze Age ignorance and superstitions must pass in order for humankind to move forward and increase probabilities of survival.
There will come a time when people who claim that flat bread and wine are the body and blood of a god will be viewed as delusional as someone today claiming that the fried peanut butter and banana sandwich and glass of milk they had for lunch was the body and blood of Elvis.
LARRY J. SANDERS
Yes. It saddens me to say that the day will come when being a Christian will be detrimental to a candidate.
ROMAINE POINDEXTER
We could have a non-Christian president if we ever came to our collective senses enough to realize that a person can be moral, thoughtful, responsible, caring, etc., without believing in a Christian god, or indeed in any god at all. Will we ever reach this point is the real question. I think it's more likely we will have an openly gay president before we'll ever have an openly atheist one.
MARTHA CUTLER
hmm, I included both Adams, and I did find another reference to the Taft quote that attributed it to a letter written in 1899 to his brother.
ReplyDelete50 years ago today, Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points for the Philadelphia Warriors in a 169–147 win over the New York Knicks at Hershey Sports Arena in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
ReplyDeleteA player today who has a 50 pt, 25 rebound game is the lead story on ESPN. Wilt averaged that for the entire '61-'62 season. MJ is often regarded as the best of all time, but there ain't nobody who ever dominated the game like Wilt. As much as I loved to watch MJ play, being a UNC grad, I still see Wilt being in a class all by homself.
DeleteLte1...the purpose of the Republican party re public education is to remove as much of the "system" from the education system as possible- statewide and nationwide. All this yelling about wanting a modern up to date education "system" by our Governor and her mouthpieces rings hollow when it is nothing more than maintaining the status quo. The status quo has its roots in the mid to late 20th century. Much power and influence is located in the status quo as evidenced by the lock step of the education associations affinity for one political party. Remove as much interference between the NC Dept of Revenue and the classroom as possible. Return as much power to the counties as possible. The more the classroom teacher and school staff are empowered, the more innovation we will see on the learning front.
ReplyDeleteLte2...District B seats are up for grabs. That might possibly be why more women don't run for office--every two years their seats are up for grabs. Sorry, couldn't help it.
ReplyDeleteMr Obama is a Christian as he is a believer in the Black Liberation Theology espoused in his church of 20 years and preached by Jeremiah Wright. Obama heard it all, and believes it all and is acting on it slowly and subtly so as not to scare his quilt ridden White upper class supporters. If he wins a second term, subtlty will go out the window. BLT leans heavily on neo Marxism. This Muslim thing stems from the fact that he is very sympathetic to the grievances of the "Religion of Perpetual Grievance" as it fits well with victimology world view.
ReplyDeleteThere aren't enough vouchers to go around, so why not just call all public schools charter and private schools and just nix the voucher system?
ReplyDeleteBesides, the voucher system implies that our public school teachers are inadequate and a voucher system has to be created to compensate for the shortcomings. Why not compensate our teachers better, and the educational infrastructure for that matter?
Mr. Brown...........if you've read the WS Journal more than once, you should know by now that the Journal is a propagandist for liberal causes. The fact that it put a ridiculous liberal cartoon in the paper, describing a non-existent Republican position, should be no surprise to you.
ReplyDeleteGood afternoon folks!
ReplyDeleteLTE 1: Unless a child is having difficulties in school due to a learning disability that public schools aren't equipped to deal with, changing to a private or charter school is not going to make that much of a difference to an unmotivated student. Parents who are footing the bill for a private education have a vested interest in seeing that their children perform well which makes a difference. A strong public school system is of paramount importance for the US to maintain a vibrant economy going forward.
LTE 2: Egad, don't tell me endorsement season has already begun :p
LTE 3: Many Christians do feel as Mr. Graham does, many other Christians do not. One would think that Pres. Obama's 20 years in a Christian church along with the fact he and his family attend a Christian church in the DC area would suffice to show his religious affinity, but as research has indicated, those who live a binary life tend to have tremendous difficulty deciphering nuance.
Sum it up: In addition to the Adamses, Jefferson, Fillmore and Taft, there was also Lincoln who, from what I've gathered, would best be described as agnostic. From a Constitutional point of view, the entire question is moot, because there is to be no religious test for office. It would not surprise me to see some LTE's regarding Mr. Sanders' response.
Help Stop the Hate from Rush Limbaugh
ReplyDeleteThis is another petition fro Senator Leland Yee and others are calling on Rush Limbaugh to apologize for mocking the Chinese language and culture on his radio program.
The more petitions we sign the greater effect it will have on that idiot. Two sponsors have already dropped him.
Limbaugh was once detained coming back from a trip to the Dominican Republic with a bottle of Viagra --

So he's a hypocrite too, along with being a sexist bully and general all-around tub of hog fat.
Arthur, why don't you just say what you really mean? :D
DeleteHa! I thought I was being diplomatic. If I said what I really meant, Stab would probably ban me for excessive profanity.
DeleteCould somebody please take up a collection? It seems that Sandra Fluke, a Georgetown law student, doesn't have enough money to buy contraception for her out of class 'activities'.
ReplyDeleteDo not bite. Do not bite. Do not bite. Do not bite. Do not, do not bite.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the reminder Wordly.
ReplyDeleteAnd shame on Arthur for insulting hog fat, thus insulting not only hog fat and its progenitor, hogs, but also lovers of hogs and hog products all over the world.
Hog products, especially sausage, bacon and pork tenderloin, are among my favorite eatables. And over the years I have known many hogs, the slowest witted of which were smarter than Rush Limbaugh.
I must admit that yesterday I insulted slime by equating it with Andrew Brietbart. I hereby apologize to the slime of the world.
Slime is a very successful and useful life form that has been with us ever since Alexander Doubleday invented baseball, a few years after god invented the earth.
In fact, thinking rationally, I cannot come up with anything animal, vegetable or mineral that would not be insulted by a comparison to the aforementioned villains.
Instead, we must resort to the human mind, which is capable of infinite villainy. And there I find the appropriate word: EVIL.
Some good news about Rush:
1. His Arbitron ratings have been steadily falling for several years. In fact, the much reviled (by those who want to revive the Know Nothing Party)) NPR daily news show now exceeds his listenership by several million.
2. His audience is primarily old, ignorant, white, male losers whose lives have not turned out as well as they had expected. Much of the rest is so-called Liberals who correctly think it is a comedy show.
In fact, we would never know what outrageous thing he has lately said if the so-called Liberal press did not report it.
3. During the 2008 campaign, Rush promised to move to Costa Rica if Obama won. Of course, being the liar that he is, he has not done that.
Maybe when Obama wins reelection in November, he will actually move. He already spends a good bit of time there and in the Dominican Republic and other third world countries which feature cheap prostitutes.
He knows those areas so well that we can be sure that he will NOT move to Haiti, since he specifically referred to Haiti in his most recent slimy...I mean Evil diatribe.
As to birth control, it is not cheap. The days when you could buy them 3 for a quarter in the restroom of almost any bar/nightclub (assuming the machine was working...usually not) are gone. The average cost per condom in 2012 is at least a dollar, and can go much higher.
ReplyDeleteFor that, in the early '60s, we could buy a six pack of 16 ounce bottles of Knickerbocker beer. What did we choose if we only had a dollar?
Birth control pills are not cheap either, ranging from $10-50 per month, depending on brand and source. And the doctor's exam to get a prescription can cost from $35-250.
None of this is inconsequential to college students and many others. Planned Parenthood helps reduce the cost for low income folks, yet the fools want to defund Planned Parenthood. Compare the cost of terminating a pregnancy and you have fools gold.
The Catholic Church and others have used birth control for many years as a way of controlling their members.
For Rush and his ilk, it's all about jealousy. Those angry old white guys are so mean and stupid that have to pay for sex. In the Dominican Republic, the 5-6 bucks includes a condom, but since Rush cannot get it up on his own, the Viagara is extra. Of course, Viagara, being for men, is covered routinely in insurance policies.
The last sentence says it all. Bravo!
