Winston-Salem Journal LTE's FR 10/07/11

Established a record
Harvard Ayers, professor emeritus at Appalachian State University, wonders in his Sept. 25 guest column which Obama we will get ("Which Obama will we get?"). In 2008, candidate Obama had little experience and no track record, so the "hope and change" slogan appealed to many young voters like the students Professor Ayers boasts about registering and delivering to the Democrats in Watauga County.
Now that President Obama has established a record, we see that this glib community organizer has no clue about how the economy works; he never ran a business, met a budget or made a payroll; and believes the solution to every problem is more regulations, more taxes, more spending and bigger government.
So which Obama will we get? Unfortunately, the one we already have whose "considerable oratorical skills" fill the air with speeches that fewer and fewer people listen to. We have learned that his promises are too easily made and even more easily broken.

Appreciation
I really don't understand why those people who are in favor of the DREAM Act claim that those opposed "don't have a heart" ("Church hears speakers for DREAM Act," Sept. 26). Give me a break. Illegal immigrants want to have all the rights of being an American just because they crossed the border (or their parents did). Those who want to become an American could serve in the military for a period of time and would know how very precious our freedoms are and what it is like fighting for those freedoms.
Then they can stand proudly in line to become one of us — proud legal Americans. And only then would they really appreciate what it is like to be free and a life member of the greatest country in the world.

Focus on one cause
This letter is in response to my interest in reading your Sept. 25 story "Stepping up to protect women," about the "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" event to bring awareness to violence against women.
Only one day later, on Sept. 26, I opened my newspaper to read the front-page headline "Man charged with murder," about a man accused of fatally shooting his wife.
The statistics aren't pretty, and no gender, education level, economic status or class escapes the problem of domestic violence. In some instances, our loved ones are being hunted down like prey.
For me, reading these painful experiences illustrated a need that many families have for increased protection and support. A few years ago, I decided to focus on one cause that was near and dear to my heart.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and I made a personal commitment to hold my annual Halloween party as a benefit for Domestic Violence Services in Davie County. I alone cannot make a difference, but, if every person were to inspire someone else to take action, we could collectively create change.

Dictionary definition
The writer of the Sept. 29 letter "Name-calling" is a bigot despite his statements to the contrary. The dictionary defines a bigot as "a person who is intolerant of any ideas other than his or her own, especially on religion, politics, or race." The writer relies on his selective interpretation of his Bible to justify his bigoted comments as they relate to homosexuality, and he further transgresses by not acknowledging that everyone does not rely on his Bible for their beliefs. He and others like him are entitled to their personal beliefs, but their failure to tolerate the beliefs of others does, by definition, make them bigots.
Our community is blessed with people of many faiths and beliefs from which we all benefit. What is required is tolerance, understanding and, most importantly, appreciation of our differences rather than bigoted attempts to make us all adhere to the beliefs of a self-selected few.

Works for a few
With all this talk about "socialism," it's easy to escape the fact that capitalism isn't working all that great these days. Millions of Americans who want to work are unemployed, and projections are that jobs won't be available for years to come. Yet corporate profits have never been higher; there's plenty of room at the top for executive bonuses. So it seems like capitalism only works for a few Americans. What good is it, then?
This is all out of whack. I'm very interested in the "Occupy Wall Street" movement. Maybe it'll bring a little sanity to the situation.

  1. LTE #1... Pharoah was a rich job creator, so why did God choose to side with a community organizer?
LTE #2... Commander Schaller, thank you for your service and your sacrifice. I think Governor Perry and others are wrong to say that those against the Dream Act have no heart. It's perfectly legitimate though to question what is in the heart. I think most people would love to have the rights and privileges of being an American, whether or not they've crossed the border, not just because they've crossed the border. I respectively disagree with the absolutism of "only then would they really appreciate what it is like to be free and a life member of the greatest country in the world."
LTE #3... Thank you Stephanie Williams Dean. You have already made a difference.

  2. ... I can understand and appreciate opposing views on illegal immigrants, it's not hard to do, but a few days ago I was at Hanes Mall and I saw any number of Latino families there with precious beautiful children and there were many things I couldn't do: 1. I couldn't tell whether they were citizens, legal immigrants, or illegal immigrants. 2. I couldn't tell whether they were Americans, Mexicans, Hondurans, Nicaraguans... 3. And I could never send these beautiful young families with their precious innocent children to the border with Mexico and wish them luck. That would be cruel but apparently not unusual for some. I would never feed innocents to lions or drug cartels, no matter what the cost.

  3. Arthur....if you happen to stroll by, I owe you an apology from yesterday's "bang my head" comment you made. You kind of left that out there as a hanging curve ball and I being near sighted, just couldn't resist.

  4. Bob, you are so right re your second comment. I've said it before. We clutch at the word "illegal", and add a few more like "entitlements" and "anchor-babies", to justify our fear and BIGOTRY (there's that word again). And, yes, there IS a distinct difference between a BIGOT and a RACIST. A racist will USE these words to PERPETUATE those fears.

Furthermore, there will be others who will parrot the sentiment of others simply because it's the thing to do. Kind of like a school kid who bullies someone but he isn't really a bully, he just does it because everyone else does.

Nowhere in recent American history nor in MY 52 year young memory do I remember where the U.S. has successfully been able to stave off or even send back illegal immigrants en masse, where ever they came from. In the mean time, THEY ARE HERE. We should treat them and speak OF them with the HUMAN DIGNITY that we ourselves would expect to be treated.

Many here will say that they are simply stating their opinions. I respect that.

Stated opinions, without thought or even arguable merit, is vitriolic. Unfortunately, there ARE FAR TOO MANY who don't think before they speak.

  5. Lte1...good observations. We now have the Obama we were always going to get---angry activist, bitter low level academic. He has given up on the illusion of "Obama" and gone over to the comfort of his base. Yesterday's press conference further ripped the mask off. He heard every word of Rev Wright's sermons.

  7. Lte5..things may be "out of whack" but if you think these useful idiots are going to restore "whack" to its normal place...then you belong on the street with them. I too am interested in the Occupy Wall Street mob, but for entirely different reasons than you. Let's see if their handlers manage to whack up a march against K street in Washington,DC and maybe even in front of the White House.

  8. LaSombra....your hate for people that want other people to abide by the law shows your BIGOTRY. Laws were passed with the best interest of the country in mind. BILLIONS and BILLIONS of dollars are being paid out to PEOPLE that have paid little or nothing into our tax system. In short, they are in effect, stealing our money.

If you want to pay for ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT expenses, please make out a check to the U.S. Treasury payable to the General Fund. I'm sure they will be GLAD to accept it from BIGOTED rich girl.

I've inducted you into Club Nitwit based on your nitwitted comments, and I'll be rejoining the website in order to offer balanced commentary.

  10. Bucky: By mere definition of the word, YOU are a bigot.

You say I'm a bigot. I say I'm not, but that's just me. I simply voice a different point of view on any given subject hoping that it will make sense. Others have no sense at all.

Re your "payable to the U.S. Treasury", you're not making an intelligent analogy there.

And lastly, your last sentence in your comment just proves to me that you are not ready to have a "reasonable and intelligent" discussion.

Call me out when you ARE ready.

    ReplyDelete
  11. LaSombra..by the definition YOU are a BIGOT. You hate people that want others to follow the law.

Look up the definition of bigot, BIGOT.

  12. Let me spell it out for you ....if you pay money into the U.S. Treasury (beyond what you normally pay), you'll be replacing money that ILLEGALS have stolen from law abiding taxpayers by their use of our social services.

    ReplyDelete
  13. You're just like the Hollywood nitwits that say they want to pay more in taxes, yet they never do.

What they really want is for EVERYBODY (Especially the middle class) to pay more in taxes to benefit some left wing social cause.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Everybody says we can't send 'em back. Well they're leaving Alabama pretty quickly. If we pass strict employment laws, illegal will self deport.

We need to change the U.S. Constitution on people born in the U.S. regarding citizenship. That is being used and abused by women from all over the world.

    ReplyDelete
  15. 120,000 illegal immigrant children attend public schools in Alabama. How much do you think their parents have paid or are goint to pay into our educational system?

I realize many of you don't speak Spanish (Yes, most illegals are Hispanic-don't fool yourself), but many illegals will straight-out tell you that they are here illegally. They will also tell why they have left other states and have come to North Carolina. What is the most common reason-no jobs. So if employers/governments require e-verify nationally, illegals will be on Greyhound buses, trains, planes...you name it, to go back to their home country.

We can't send them back, ha!

    ReplyDelete
  16. That pretty much covers my discussion on illegal immigration. Nice chatting with you LaSombra.

  17. There is nothing quite like an ignorant fool who comes into the forum and babbles on about things of which he knows not.

The Tax Foundation says that "illegal aliens" pay about $15 billion each year in Federal income tax and $9 billion in Social Security taxes, which is a windfall for the SSA, because illegal aliens are not eligible for SS benefits.

In addition, they pay billions more in state income taxes, local property taxes and local and state sales taxes.

The Congressional Research Service has repeatedly pointed out that illegal aliens are NOT eligible for welfare of any kind.

Of course, none of this means anything to the dumbasses who repeatedly parrot the lies of Rush/Beck/Fox lies and such. Morons!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Ah, good, then there will be no need to repeat it, as we will be able to reference this page in the future if ever we need to know.

Also, Alabama will run into labor shortages in agriculture and construction...jobs that legal citizens won't do anymore...as immigrants leave the state.

I can't blame them. Who the hell would want to live in Alabama anyway?

    ReplyDelete
  26. By the way Rush/Kitty Kat/Idiot....your data on how much illegals pay in taxes is inaccurate. How many illegals have social security cards, strike that, legitimate social security cards? You can't report taxes unless you have a social security card. Don't try to pass that left wing liberal data off on me.

On another note: The estimate, as the number of illegals in the U.S., has been reported to be around 12 million. Now, it's been reported that over 5 million more are here illegally because of tourist/employment visas overstays. So we've got over 20 million people running around the country, and nobody knows who they are or where they came from...

So, illegals are soaking us for billions and billions! Don't be fooled by the idiot.

  34. It always gets me when anti-immigrant contention spouts "illegal is illegal, what part of illegal do you not understand?"

There are varying degrees of illegality depending on circumstances. I was reminded of this recently while watching the Ken Burns PBS documentary "Prohibition".

Mr. Burns points out the many States, like Kansas, had adopted prohibition prior to the passage of the 18th Amendment, but that they still had Saloons. Many of these establishments were frequented by the very law makers who passed the prohibition laws. It seems illegal didn't mean illegal.

The temperance matriarch Carrie Nation would walk into the Saloons wielding an ax and smash the place to bits. She would state what if the authorities were not going to enforce the law then she would. She would be arrested. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/1900/peopleevents/pande4.html

  44. Good evening, folks!

OT, you'd do better to lie awake worrying about the proletarian plutocrats who get to buy pols with other people's money collected in the name of collective bargaining. But, I don't lie wide awake about them either. You might want to ponder the lack of Freedom of Choice, held so dear elsewhere.

Bob, the USSC also held unions to be legal people. Unions cried foul. They had been behaving as such for quite a while, with the FEC ignoring it. Then the playing field became level, but then the system became unfair. Orwell must have had unions in mind when he conceived Doublethink and Doublespeak.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Hey Stab! You holding up ok?

    ReplyDelete
  46. I also disagree with the USSC on that one too. I'm a union supporter, but I say get it all out

    ReplyDelete
  47. Hey WW! Yes sir, holding up, having a great time, though I leave pretty tired, as do my younger coworkers.

LTE1: I worked with Austin Coan for a couple of years. He is a fine guy. My opinion of President Obama is not so severe as Austin's, though. I do have differences with him, particularly wrt to my pet bete noire, but some of those broken promises are more simply reality v. campaign idealism. I, for one, am glad that the terrorist cutthroats remain in Guantanamo ("Gitmo" deserves a Word watch citation: I dislike the nickname). I continue to feel that the job remains above his pay grade, however.

LTE2: As the African-American women in my orientation class would say, "You go, girl!" And thank you.

LTE3: I'm with Bob on this issue. So is Mrs. Stab. She teaches children who would be subject to deportation from here to misery. The thought upsets her. Mrs. Stab is Mrs. Right, but does not claim the first name of Always. But in this instance she is correct.

LTE4: It is actually easier to find reasons to like most people. Believe it or not, I have swilled beer with union officials and had a fine time. We disagree thoroughly, unwaveringly, but cordially. Some of the opposition to gay marriage is honestly faith-based (love the sinner, hate the supposed sin), but a lot of opposition is sheer bigotry.

LTE5: The college kids trying to occupy Wall Street might do well to rethink their mission. Wall Street is the source of the trust funds that pay for their revoluntionary idleness. And business (meaning we consumers) now pay for unions' joining the attempted occupation as they push their class war agenda.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Bob, the problem is that when you get it all out, unions remain in, with no enforcement against them. I say let the playing field stay level.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Stab...if you like Blues music, try Boo Boo Davis' "I'm so tired". A good theme song for hard working people. If you have a good set of speakers...even better!

  50. Not much for blues, WW, but I'll listen. The music might be appropriate. My orientation class is composed mostly of African-American ladies who appear to appreciate the genre. Interesting and fun bunch, they: they are quick-witted, love life, and we are having a great time as we learn the company's admirable culture.

    Not

As mentioned before, none of us has much control over anything that happens in DC or elsewhere nationally. So I don't waste my time on it.

Local politics is where individuals CAN make a difference. Watch for changes in some local boards next year.

Meanwhile, in my new role as company flack, I have been polling my spies around the country about the demonic unions…you have no idea what horrific things they have up their sleeves. Despite the fact that in the long run they only have between 10 and 20% of the money that corporations have to spend on politics, they are on the verge of taking over the country.

Soon union thugs will be knocking on your door and taking your Costco/Wal*Mart made in China underwear and leaving you with inferior US union made goods and there won't be a thing that you can do about it, because they, as they always have been, are above the law. Don't believe it, study union history.
