Arrest Zimmerman
It is a shame that a student my age was killed nearly a month ago by George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch captain who shot and killed Trayvon Martin, and the justice system has still not handcuffed the killer or taken him in for questioning — he is still walking a free man.
The 911 call clearly indicates that Martin was trying to run away from the man chasing him with a gun and was crying for help. How does carrying a bag of Skittles and a bottle of tea become a source of harm to a man armed with a gun? If Zimmerman feels he was right, why has he not so far apologized to the family of the victim?
What he has done is a crime, and what he did was poor judgment on his part. I only wish he had somehow listened to the 911 dispatcher who asked him to stay in his vehicle and not follow the adolescent.
Zimmerman is the one who was using force against an unarmed youth; how can that be his argument for self-defense? He should immediately be arrested and put through a trial.

Curran speaks out
I love the March 29 letter "Ambushed." Do liberals ever listen, or do they only hear what they want to hear?
The political comments at the Piedmont Opera did not bother me at all ("Opera patron unhappy with art," March 16). They have the right to express their political views even when I disagree. They have the right to display a "V" at their opera; I didn't say they should remove it.
Parental notification is required for sex education — should not the opera have given parental notification?
The letter writer gets an A-plus for being so astute in his observations. Yes, I am the same Pattie Curran. Notice at the "Taking Back Our Freedom" rally we stood up for our First Amendment rights using our First Amendment rights without any vulgarity. Men, women and children were protesting that day, and there was not a single display of objectionable material or art. Imagine that: We can articulate our positions without objectifying women. What a novel idea!

Flames of racism
Racism is alive but not well in our nation. The massive outcry regarding the shooting of a young black person in Florida has once again fanned the smoldering embers under the Jesse Jacksons and Al Sharptons, as well as local wannabes.
But the most despicable of all is our president's injection into what the mass media had already kindled. And for purely political reasons.
It was so unnecessary, because many African-Americans will blindly follow Obama and liberals no matter what stance is taken on any matter.
A local "reverend," the Rev. John Mendez, spouts: "If a black man (had) killed a white man, they would be running around with portable electric chairs right now." Perhaps. But if the youth had been white it would never have made news in the first place.
And have we forgotten about being innocent until proven guilty? There will never be racial harmony in America as long as there are bigots of all colors itching for opportunities to fan the flames of prejudice for personal or political gain.

Sipprell's integrity
I write to support the candidacy of David Sipprell for District Court Judge. I have known David since he was a teenager and can summarize my support for him in three words: experience, fairness and integrity.
A UNC Chapel Hill law school honors graduate, he was named to the school's Law Review. He has since distinguished himself as an active-duty JAG officer in the U.S. Air Force, in private law practice and as an experienced and respected assistant district attorney.
Knowing David and his family, I am convinced he shares the values of our county's citizens. (For example, as a youth he earned the rank of Eagle Scout.) He knows the law and will follow it. These are some of the many reasons I know he would exhibit fairness in his judicial decisions.
Finally, David Sipprell's integrity is well known, not only in his professional work, but also in his community service to organizations such as Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the Clemmons Kiwanis Club and the American Legion. A strong family man, he and his wife, Kyla, have two beautiful girls, ages 7 and 9.
In my opinion, all of these strengths indicate David Sipprell would serve our county with distinction as a District Court judge, and I recommend his election to this important post.

Bob G. Tannehill, Sunday school teacher at Calvary Baptist Church. Imagine that!
ReplyDeletePeople are slowly learning that with the Advent of the Internet, Injustices anywhere become injustices everywhere.
I found some dueling editorials from 2003 between Calvary Baptist and the Moravians: http://www.moravians.org/Tannehill_letter.html
ReplyDeleteCan you spot anything wrong with this statement:
"as far as I'm concerned. No matter what "religion" you label yourself with, there is only one God, and he is god of all gods and king of all kings.

??there is only one God, and he is god of all gods?? but of course, it all makes sense now, hallelujah, amen.

ReplyDeleteI met a traveler from an antique land
Who said: "Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert... Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed;
And on the pedestal these words appear:
'My name is Ozymandius, King of Kings,
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!'
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away."
Percy Shelley
Yep, god of gods and king of kings and lord of hosts...look upon my works ye mighty and despair...
Poor Bob Tannehill. I have known him for many years. At first he was merely an annoying loudmouth. Then he fell and hit his little head or something and has been a blithering idiot ever since. He fits right in at Calvary Baptist Center for the Condemnation of All People Who Are Not Members of Calvary Baptist Center for the Condemnation of...you get what I mean?
Thanks Bob for the link...one takes on the Moravians at their own peril.
DeleteAfter all, they were the first to break with the Pope...100 years before Martin Luther. RIP Jan Hus.
Good afternoon folks!
ReplyDeleteLTE 1: It's a shame when anyone that young dies. Unfortunately, the Stand Your Ground law is going to make it quite difficult for local officials to bring charges. "I was afraid for my life, so I shot him" is all it takes to get away with manslaughter or murder in FL.
LTE 2: Firstly, anyone who uses the labels "liberal" or "conservative" loses me right off the bat. Quit seeing the world as black/white. "Vulgarity", like obscenity, is in the eye of the beholder. There are many who would find denunciations of homosexuals simply for being who they are to be vulgar and obscene. Others may find it an affront to advocate Christianity as the state govt's official religion. I imagine there are also those who find your desire to "Take Back Our Freedom" at the expense of taking freedom from others who disagree with you to be highly offensive as well.
LTE 3: Pres. Obama was responding to a question about the incident which he has every right to do. When did becoming POTUS mean you forego the right to express an opinion? Yes, some African-Americans, as well as whites and latinos may "blindly follow" Pres. Obama, but it seems just as many if not more whites blindly follow Limbaugh no matter what the stance, so should Limbaugh also have no say? (Again, quit with the "liberal"/"conservative" crap!) Isn't lumping people together of a single race as having a single thought when you are not of that race also "fanning the flames"?
LTE 4: Endorsement. I still have reservations about judges being elected rather than appointed. In an ideal world, judges would be immune to politics.
We need to take the politics out of judgeships...appointment by a bipartisan committee would seem to be the answer.
DeletePerfect example of what goes wrong in a story in today's Journal. District Court Judge Tori Roemer heard a case involving one of her campaign staffers. She should have recused, but didn't and is trying to make it sound as if there was nothing wrong in what she did. Near the end of the article is mentioned that she was admonished a couple of years ago for sending two people to jail for not paying their rent.
What is not mentioned is that when she made her first run for judge back in the 1990s, she was fired as an assistant district attorney after the election for running a race baiting campaign.
Maybe it's time for Ms. Roemer to retire from the bench. She certainly does not need the money.
I remember that...it was against Loretta Biggs.
DeleteI saw Biggs in action several times when I was testifying against people who had stolen from my employer. She was a good judge.
