Winston-Salem Journal LTE TU 04/24/12

Some people
Some people read the Bible and say that homosexuality is wrong. Some people know homosexuals and realize that the Bible is wrong.
When your book is more important than people, there's a problem with your book. When your religion is in conflict with reality, it's not reality's job to reconcile itself to religion.
Amendment One cannot stop love. Same-sex couples are not going to stop being together because the law penalizes them. Gay people are not going to turn straight because they're not allowed to marry. The only result of Amendment One will be to deny gay people and their children the rights that straight people have.
This is unAmerican and this is evil.

For Ed Hanes
For those who watch local Forsyth County politics and are truly concerned with their community as a whole, the creation of a new N.C. legislature 72nd House District is exciting. There is a candidate running in the May 8 Democratic primary for the 72nd House District who can truly represent all of its citizens. His name is Ed Hanes.
Having spoken at length with Ed Hanes, I can testify to the fact that he is capable, ready and eager to contribute to leading North Carolina into the 21st century.
The current General Assembly seems intent on dragging North Carolina backward. What is clear to me is that we need public servants like Ed Hanes who have their eyes on the future. It is vital that registered Democrats and Independents living in the 72nd District vote in the May 8 primary.
With that in mind, I encourage citizens of the 72nd to vote for Ed Hanes. Support this vigorous young man in his quest to go to Raleigh and advocate for a future-focused agenda for all the citizens of the 72nd District and the rest of our state. Vote for Ed Hanes and empower him to help lead us all forward.

Equality and justice
Try as I might, I have been totally unable to understand how passage of Amendment One, the so-called "marriage amendment," will protect traditional marriage. It seems to me that the only thing that can threaten traditional marriage is what goes on between the man and the woman in that marriage — or outside of it.
On the other hand, I can see many reasons to vote against Amendment One. Foremost for me is the knowledge that passage of the amendment would not protect, but deny, the rights of individuals and groups. Call me old-fashioned, but I believe in equality and justice for all. So, I will be voting no to Amendment One.
I am hoping that on May 8, I will find that a majority of North Carolinians are of like mind. I'd like to continue to be proud to call North Carolina home.

LAURA A.W. PHILLIPS

It's not about discrimination
The marriage amendment to be voted on May 8 is not about discrimination, bigotry or hatred, as some would have us believe. It simply states that marriage shall only be between a man and a woman in the state of North Carolina. It is a moral issue, because one cannot equate the unnatural, abominable and immoral acts of sodomy and oral sex with the God-ordained, natural and morally accepted, time-honored relationship between man and woman (wife).
As a Bible-believing, born-again Christian, I do not believe in bashing or practicing hatred against those living a same-sex lifestyle. That is their choice and they can live as they please. But do not try to change or redefine the true meaning of marriage (ordained by God) to that which is unnatural, immoral and abominable, according to God's word, the Bible.
I do and will continue to pray for those that I know who live with the same-sex lifestyle. I just believe the Bible, and it condemns those who practice same-sex acts. I cannot condone that which God's word condemns. Remember what happened to Sodom and Gommorah?
There are those who may not agree with my opinion, but it is based on the word of God, and God has the final say-so. Remember, his word is true and everlasting.
I write this to help those of a different persuasion, because I care for their souls. I hope they will join me in voting to keep marriage morally correct and honorable in North Carolina.

Intolerance is taught
"Amendment One Harms Children — Vote Against." After I placed the sign in my front yard, my children wanted to know what it meant. I explained to them that the citizens of North Carolina are voting May 8 on the amendment, and I tried to present both sides of the debate as well as I could.
My daughters were surprised that anyone would work to deny anyone else the right to marry the person that they loved, and that the government could even enact such laws. As their mother, I have never taught them to discriminate against anyone, and support for Amendment One is hard for them to understand.
Intolerance for homosexuality is taught — it is not innate in children. I teach my daughters to never tolerate bullying at school and to always stand up for children who are being picked on for being different. My girls also know that they are loved unconditionally, no matter what their sexual orientation is or will be, and that their parents will accept and support their decisions in life. What are Amendment One supporters teaching their children?
Passing Amendment One will harm children by legalizing institutional discrimination, and it will legitimize bullying and inspire those people who demonize and oppress minority groups. North Carolina deserves better than this, and so do its children. Please vote No on May 8.

The real enemy, breast cancer
Hopefully this community will not let the unfortunate misstep by the Susan G. Komen corporate office, which has been corrected, distract us from the real enemy, breast cancer. It will continue to invade our ranks without discrimination.
Let's band together against this enemy and register to participate in the Susan G. Komen N.C. Triad Race for the Cure in record numbers on Saturday, May 5, to run, walk, sleep-in and/or donate to the cure.
Seventy-five percent of the money raised is used to make local grants for life-saving mammograms for the needy and to support other local breast health-related projects, and some of the remaining 25 percent slated for research comes right back to our community because of the fine medical research facilities we have here for cancer research.
Since its formation in 2000, our Triad affiliate has invested more than $4.2 million in local projects in our service area and contributed more than $1.5 million toward national research grants.
Your continued support is crucial to the needy women in all of the 11 counties in our Triad affiliate service area and to the efforts to find a cure.

Unintended consequences
It's true that Amendment One could have unintended consequences harming children and families ("Panel calls marriage ban problematic," April 16) — women having no protection from domestic violence; children suffering through ghastly custody battles.
Furthermore, voters should note that what they see on the ballot on May 8 is not the whole amendment — and that the second part, omitted on the printed ballot, is even more vague and more confusing than the first part: "This section does not prohibit a private party from entering into contracts with another private party; nor does this section prohibit courts from adjudicating the rights of private parties." Even lawyers don't know what that means relative to the first part ("the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State").
Also, I wonder how an amendment could even be valid if unsuspecting citizens thought they were voting for something else.

Think about it
We have seen the ads, heard the rhetoric and talked to our friends. Now it is time to vote on Amendment One. Think about it.
Did society crumble and were our lives destroyed as some people predicted when we got liquor by the drink and the state lottery? Think about it.
Do our personal beliefs and values include bigotry and discriminating against people in loving relationships outside of marriage for whatever the reason? Think about it.
Do we want to deprive women and children in domestic partnerships of medical benefits and protection under the law? Think about it.
What do we want to say to employers interested in relocating to North Carolina and bringing much-needed jobs? Think about it.
Every vote on Amendment One is important and every citizen should vote. We are sending a message to the rest of the world about the kind of people who live in our community and our state. Think about it.

A matter of civil rights
It's easy for people who are not being affected by the marriage amendment to say that it's not a matter of civil rights. They're not the ones whose rights are under attack.
But when a whole class of people is denied the same rights that other people have — the right to marry people they love — then it is very much an issue of civil rights and discrimination. And that makes it, also, a matter of morality.
What part of "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" are they having trouble with? Would they really want the government to dictate that they can't marry the people they love? Really?
A vote for the marriage amendment is undeniably a matter of discrimination.

Anne Romney's choice
I admire Ann Romney's decision to be a stay-at-home mother and applaud her strong statement that "we need to respect the choices that women make." I, too, am pro-choice, and I choose to make decisions about my reproductive life and well as my economic one. I choose accurate and complete information about reproduction; access to safe, inexpensive contraception; and access to abortion if necessary.
Wait — could it be she wasn't thinking along those lines when she urged us to respect the choices women make? I am going to choose to take her words at face value. Ann Romney — pro-choice!

Argument is a smokescreen
The civil-rights argument for gay marriage is a smokescreen ("Same-sex marriage a civil-rights issue, Barber says," April 18). Gay marriage has nothing whatsoever to do with civil rights. Does anyone really believe if the "marriage amendment" is defeated on May 8, we will not soon see gay marriage enshrined in North Carolina? Is the Winston-Salem Journal ready to print photos of two men or two women in the wedding and engagement section? If you don't think this happens, take a look at The New York Times' social pages.
How many voters will see through the civil-rights ruse? How many will rise above this intimidation and vote for traditional marriage on May 8?

Mitchell Davis, what about all the teenagers having oral sex?

Study: Half of All Teens Have Had Oral Sex http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/09/15/AR2005091500915.html.

According to your argument, half of all teens ages 15-19 were acting unnaturally when surveyed in 2005.

  3. Last night you-know-who added a late piece of idiocy that I thought everybody should see. As always, he has serious problems with reading and comprehension:

"Men have an approximately 19% chance of being a victim of a violent crime during his lifetime, and women, approximately 16% chance.

    http://crimeinamerica.net/crime-rates-united-states/

You can walk around with your head up your liberal heinie if you want, I don't care. However, let's not confuse your fiction from the real facts."

Well, let's start unconfusing Buck boy's very confused facts. Allow me to use his own chosen source. Here is the quote from the site he used, crimeinamerica.net:

"Sex: Males are victimized more than females, but not by much (18.4 vs. 15.8) per thousand (my emphasis)."

Buck boy cited the numbers as percentages, but they are actually numbers per thousand. So his 19% for males (vs actual 18.4, always round up when you're lying) actually comes out to .0184% for a lifetime. That is not quite 2 in 100, and that takes into account all people, from those who, like Buck boy, live at the bottom of the barrel, to those, like me, who live at the top.

That means that those who live at the bottom (Buck boy)and hang out with riff raff, probably have about 100% chance of experiencing violence, whereas I, who live at the top of the barrel, and tend to hang out with quality people who do not engage in Buck boy's sort of tomfoolery, have virtually zero chance of experiencing violence.

Maybe Buck boy should stick to his Chatty Cathy mode, where all that is required is the constant parroting of non sequiturs copied and pasted from a wide selection of fruitcake websites. If he would like to rise above his pitiful state, Forsyth Tech has excellent courses in reading and comprehension. Call 723-0371.

    1. I rarely make excuses but I got the percentages from another website that referenced the above website.

Nonetheless, your earlier reference to JUST firearm victimation was not painting the entire picture. No, not you, you wouldn't try to distort the facts in order to make them fit into pea-headed illogical, mind would you?

Even our own cites don't include the probably of being victimized through property crimes, fraud, etc. As such, a person does have a high probably of being victimized by a criminal during his or her lifetime.

So, I'll still stand by statement about you having your head up your liberal heinie. However, I did make a mistake citing the percentages. It was late at night, and I always get excited when you throw out some liberal raw meat for me to chew on.

Now go on and tell us how Zimmerman is under constant surveillance by the FBI with helicopters flying overhead. I need a good laugh for today.

One of my favorite books is San Manuel Bueno, Martir by Miguel de Unamuno from the Spanish Literature course I took at UNC. I spent the good part of the summer of 1978 in Spain and the Canary Islands, traveled by ship from Montreal to London, then Plymouth to Santander through the Bay of Biscay or the Golfo de Viscaya. Then trains to Madrid and Cadiz and another ship to Las Palmas. I'm still pretty good at it but definitely out of practice.

    13. And a great mayor Marshall was. He ran for office and lost 8 times in 20 years, then decided to run against popular mayor George Lentz in 1949. Everybody laughed. But Marshall had an ace up his sleeve.

Due to two strikes against the tobacco companies in 1943 and 1947, the black community had gotten politically organized. Marshall campaigned in east Winston where other white politicians never roamed, and promised all citizens that he would produce ABC stores, a new hospital, new highways and a winning baseball team.

After winning the election, he produced ABC stores (known as Kurfees Drugstores), new highways (one of which contained the Kurfees Curve) and laid the groundwork for Forsyth Memorial Hospital.

Oh, and the baseball team. The 1950 Winston-Salem Cardinals won 106 games and lost only 47, still a Carolina League record. They are generally considered the best team in the long history of the league.

Marshall was a great mayor and a great character. One of his pals, Stewart Robertson, wrote "My Friend Marshall", well worth a read.

Katharine King Johnson was quite a woman also. She was president of Salem College’s “Friends of the Library,” the Winston-Salem Arts and Crafts Association, the Winston-Salem Arts Council, which she worked together with Virginia Lee Comer to establish in Winston-Salem. She was also president of the Winston-Salem Junior League and was the Southeastern director of the Association of Junior Leagues of America. She was president of the Winston-Salem Gallery of Contemporary Art, the Winston-Salem Symphony Association, the North Carolina State Art Society and the Twin City Garden Club and a member of the Garden Club of America. Katharine was vice-president of the National Repertory Theatre Foundation of New York. She was on the Board of Trustees of Salem College and Salem Academy, serving for two nine-year terms, and on the Board of Visitors for three years. She was on the Board of Trustees for the Winston-Salem Symphony Association and the Piedmont Festival Board. Katharine was appointed by Governor Terry Sanford to a commission to investigate the feasibility of a North Carolina School of the Arts, to be located in Winston-Salem., and served on the Board of Directors for that organization and also on the Board of Visitors. She was on the Blair House Board of Directors and Fine Arts Commission in Washington DC and on the National Board of Blair House Restoration. Katharine assisted in the restoration of the Salem College Gramley House and the reception room at Salem Academy. She was active in the restoration of the entire Graylyn Conference Center and was on the Interiors Advisory Board of the Graylyn Conference Center of Wake Forest University. Katharine was a member of the Friends of the Kennedy Center and Membership Chairman of the Southeastern zone in Washington, DC. She was on the planning and co-ordination committee of the opening of the Stevens Center in Winston-Salem and chairman of their Gala Dinner in April, 1983. Katharine designed, furnished and decorated the new reception room at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Department of Clinics, in honor of Dr. Henry Valk. Katharine remodeled the Winston-Salem Junior League Headquarters and was on the planning board of the Winston-Salem Symphony Orchestra. She received the Winston-Salem Arts Council Award of “Outstanding Service to the Community in the Field of the Arts” and also special citations from Salem College and Wake Forest University in recognition of her services.

LTE's 1,3,4,5,6,7,8,10: Lots of letters on Amendment One, mostly negative. Ms. Vaughn is quite correct that homosexuality cannot be legislated away, so do we afford them the same rights as heterosexuals or not. Ms. Phillips correctly states the amendment does nothing to "protect" marriage. Pass or fail, ~50% of all marriages will continue to fail. The amendment says more than just "marriage shall only be between a man and a woman". It states marriage between a male and female will be the ONLY recognized union by NC. This has major implications for all non-married couples. Theological arguments are invalid because govt actions must have a secular purpose. Btw...sodomy and oral sex goes on in heterosexual marriages all the time. Does Mr. Davis propose we place policemen in the bedrooms to monitor what type of sex takes place? As Ms. Lowery points out, it's easy to say it's not a civil rights issue when it doesn't affect you as obviously it doesn't for Ms. Walsh.
    LTE 2: Endorsement
LTE 6: Hopefully, the Planned Parenthood debacle was just a blip. Now that order has been restored, let's hope Komen can continue to raise awareness and funds to fight this disease which robbed me of the chance of ever meeting a grandmother and also took the lives of an aunt and a life long friend.
LTE 10: Of course, it's a lot easier to make the choice to be a stay-at-home mom when you have a husband who considers $375k to be petty cash. I do believe women are perfectly capable of making their own decisions without govt help or interference.

  10. "Phoenix was the number two kidnapping city in the world, second only to Mexico City before SB1070 was enacted. Wow, I didn't know that."

Actually, nobody knew it, because it was never so. This myth came from a lie told on some Sunday morning tv show by John McCain when he was running for president.

Phoenix did have a high number of kidnappings between the late 1990s and 2008, when the number peaked at 358. But the numbers began to decline long before any state immigration law was passed, dropping to 318 in 2009 and below 300 in 2010. SB1070 has been blocked by the courts, so is not being enforced, thus can have no effect on anything.

And Phoenix was never even near being the #2 kidnapping city in the world. Neither the FBI nor Interpol keeps city by city statistics for kidnapping, but experts at ASI Global and Stratfor, two Texas firms deeply involved in kidnapping cases world wide have pointed out that there are dozens of cities, including Tegucigulpa, Caracas, Mexico City, San Salvador, Guatemala City, Bogota and a host of others with bigger kidnapping problems than Phoenix. In fact, Midland, Texas probably is the leading US city in the kidnapping sweepstakes.

As always, stupid is as stupid does.

  19. I post this link about the New World Order as a public service. There are enough articles, every one proven to be absolutely 100% true, to keep Buck boy busy for several years. Others might want to take a peek, since it is like looking directly into the interior of a severely muddled brain.

There is a large selection of videos, as well. But I think my favorite part is a substantial section "documenting" President Eisenhower's three meetings with extraterrestrials in 1954 at Holloman Air Force Base. This will give you chills!

Also, a number of articles are in Spanish for those wishing to brush up on their language skills. Have fun!
