Against the amendment
I am pleased that the students at Appalachian State University in Boone apparently voted against the marriage amendment, which was what any intelligent person would have done. I find it sad that bigotry and discrimination are still considered to be desirable Christian attributes.
Consequently I would suggest that anyone wishing to start a new business pick an area with a potential work force that is less ignorant and more willing to learn.

Lenox and Wilt
With the result of so much hate and fear in the newspaper on May 9 ("Gay-marriage ban approved"), it was heartening to read Lenox Rawlings' gentle story about Wilt Browning, Henry Aaron and Martin Luther King ("Browning mastered telling sports tales").
Rawlings' story reminds us that hate and fear may win an occasional game, as they did as the polls on May 8, but love and goodness will — eventually — win the series.

Time for taxes
I want to congratulate the people of North Carolina for their passage of the new constitutional amendment. It isn't every day that people have the courage of their convictions strong enough to deny rights and entitlements to a targeted group of citizens.
Don't worry about all that "love thy neighbor" and "do unto others" nonsense. This vote has proved that it is possible to fight love with hate and that under certain circumstances, even men of the cloth advocate child abuse. After all, who do "those people" think they are to demand the same legal rights afforded every other citizen? Let's just hope that "those people" don't decide to turn the tables and demand that the government end the free ride of churches and insist that religious organizations be subject to taxation. Hopefully, it won't occur to "those people" that religion is nothing more than big business and should be taxed like any other corporation.
Don't worry about being held to account for your unreasonable prejudices; wear your hatred proudly as though it were a warm coat. Just "pray" that it doesn't incinerate you from within. I say display your bigotry and hypocrisy proudly and demand that the legislature declare May 8 as "Hate a Gay Day" in North Carolina.

No 'voice of the people'
We shouldn't say that the voice of the people has been heard in the recent Amendment One decision. Actually, only about one-third of the eligible voters went to the polls and of them, and 60 percent voted for passage. Therefore, only 20 percent of voters amended the state constitution.
The voice of the bigots and theocrats has been heard, not the people of North Carolina.
And, as a point of information, I am an old, straight, white woman who believes fervently in the teachings of Jesus Christ, as in "love one another."
Something else to think about: Since there is no evidence that Jesus ever had sex with a woman, how do we really know that he wasn't gay? Hmm?

Thanks
A big thank-you to the 831,788 North Carolinians who voted against Amendment One, and who make up a minority group of dynamic movers and shakers. If I could, I'd bake every last one of you cookies.

Very clear point
As a citizen of North Carolina, I am very concerned that amending the state constitution to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman will cause hate crimes and discrimination to proliferate and further water down our constitution.
All I hear is that the Bible is very clear on this point. Now I fear that amending our constitution in such a way will pave the way for other constitutional amendments reflecting things the Bible is very clear about — such as committing adultery, talking back to your parents, working on the Sabbath, etc. Don't the Ten Commandments address all these things very clearly?
I believe these are moral issues, not legal issues. Where is our ability to think for ourselves and to question what some politicians and religious leaders are selling? It may be a bill of goods — not a Bill of Rights.

Headline news
The May 9 front-page headline said, "Gay-marriage ban approved." This was never about a ban, but rather definition. So the headline should have been, "N.C. defines marriage."

  1. LTE #7...Headline News: "NC defines marriage." And all this time I understood proponents to say that the definition of marriage was as old as mankind. I guess some just want to take credit for everything.

  2. LTE #4... that's correct Patricia, or in other words, about 14% of the citizens of this state passed a constitutional amendment that effects 100% of the citizens.

  3. LTE #6... Yes I always thought the Bible was very clear on gluttony too, very clear and with ~60% of citizens overweight or obese, one might think overeating and waste of food, the 3rd most important human need behind air and water, a bigger issue than the 4-5% who may want to get married, yet there are no proposals to ban all-you-can-eat.

    1. Bob, gluttony, like the other deadly sins, comes down, as always, to money. While some people waste their time on insignificant matters like unions and other trivia, big business is spending big money to ensure that they will continue to make big money off of gluttony, envy, greed, etc.

    2. Insignificant? California's economy is the eleventh largest economy in the world, and it's being destroyed by unions. I hardly think that's insignificant. Of course, then again, I'm a thinking, sane person.

    3. Simple minded people look for simple minded answers to non-simple minded questions.

No union or combination of unions has ever destroyed any economy...only truly simple minded people would even consider such a stupid thought.

There are many factors that have had a negative effect on California's economy, ranging from proposition 13 to Governor Schwarzenegger's general incompetence to excessive pensions and benefits for public sector workers to the passivity of the state's business community to just plain stupid decisions.

No problem ever responds to single issue answers, which is why our nation is in the fix its in right now...too many dumbass answers to complicated questions.

    4. Boy, you are getting destroyed lately, and you don't seem to like it.

It's clear by your response you don't diddly about California's politics or its economy.

  4. During my ramblings, I'm starting to read articles on the internet that indicate that some gay agendas may go even further than just the simple quest for the right to get married. It seems that some gay activists want to actively push their sexual practices and lifestyle onto the entire population.

This whole 'gay' situation may be bigger than what most of us earlier thought. Stay tuned. This story seems to be evolving.

  6. Good afternoon folks!
LTE 1: It's been previously noted that the younger generation sees homosexuality as no biggie which is just one of the reasons the newly passed A1 is going to have a short existence.
LTE 2: Speaking of hate and fear, noticed the klanners are going to be playing with fire in Reidsville. Wonder if they realize it's the 21st century?
LTE 3: Well played. "...religion is nothing more than big business and should be taxed like any other corporation" - there actually are some churches out there that are concerned with lifting up their members and having a positive influence in their communities, but too many, particularly the mega-churches, seem preoccupied with influencing the political process for personal gain.
LTE 4: The TB's vote disproportionately during the primaries, so you're more likely to see the wishes of the ideologically pure carried out with that vote. I imagine Ms. Reck will get some feedback on her last paragraph.
LTE 5: Why, thanks! I would take a chocolate chip myself :)
LTE 6: It is not the govt's job to uphold religious tenets or doctrine.
LTE 7: It was about NC recognizing only married heterosexuals. Even if you have been living together for 10 years and have 2 kids, you're not in a relationship according to NC, therefore no domestic laws apply to you.

  7. Ann Arbor, Michigan is a wet dream for any right-minded liberal. Voted year after year as one of the best cities to live in the United States, Ann Arbor also happens to be predominantly Democrat. With just over 100,000 residents, it's also a large enough city to get lost in and a small enough one to make lots of liberal-minded friends.

I wish I could send a few liberals from North Carolina up there.

  8. The SEIU is neck deep in its support for the 'Occupy' people as I reported yesterday. Some people are in denial, but it appears to be fact. There are mulitple links between unions and the 'Occupy' group. FoxNEWs is all over it.

Thanks Stab for your opinions on unions. Unions started out good for the country, now they are like anchors around our economies neck.
