Winston-Salem Journal LTE WE 05/23/12

Paul deserved better
St. Paul, chief author of the New Testament, was most likely a gay man. He writes of his "affliction" that he is powerless to control. He agonizes. He finds this Jesus person, deifies him and is finally able to feel good about himself through Jesus' compassion — an attribute that a lot of so-called Christians lack today.
Paul must have thought he was a decadent, low-life person. Unworthy.
Paul deserved better, and my heart goes out to him and all the other gays and lesbians who closeted themselves throughout the ages because of their different sexuality.
It really chafes me to hear those in the Religious Right talk about this marriage issue. They wouldn't know God if he/she/it hit them on the head with a 2-by-4. Their smug superiority is pathetic.
I think this Jesus person that Christians are so fond of deifying would be in the corner of the gay and lesbian couples if they are living a good, decent life — despite their sexuality — and would applaud their desire to legalize their union.
Just my opinion.

The governor's role
It is so disappointing to read Gov. Perdue's comments on the marriage amendment in the May 12 Journal ("Perdue slams marriage vote"). She must not have any regard for the will of the people of North Carolina, when nearly 61 percent of the voters voted for that amendment.
I don't think Gov. Perdue understands her role as governor. Rather than accept the will of the people, she attempts to slam North Carolina people with her unprofessional, tactless, uninformed reference to the people of Mississippi. What does she know about Mississippi?
She's the typical politician trying to demonize views she does not agree with, but only when she has no risk for reelection. How sad it is she was ever elected. She has single-handedly turned a traditionally Democratic state Republican.
For that, I thank her.

Media doesn't care
The liberal bias of the mainstream media never ceases to amaze me. Mitt Romney is being hammered for a high-school prank in 1965 and nobody seems to care about President Obama's admitted college drug use. As the "one percent," the tea party and business profits are vilified, "Occupy" thugs are lauded. My hope is that our electorate is finally waking up to the hypocrisy of most media.
We cannot survive four more years of Obama's deficit spending, divisive rhetoric and crippling over-regulation. Recently the president traveled to Los Angeles on the taxpayer dollar for yet another fundraiser — a $40,000-per-plate dinner at George Clooney's Beverly Hills mansion. I guess the "one percent" is good if it is composed of movie stars or professional athletes and gives to the Democrats.
Our country desperately needs a new leader — one who unites us and who stays in Washington to work on the staggering problems we face. I pray Mitt Romney will be that leader.

The majority wins
I am one of the many Christians who worked for the defeat of Amendment One. We were in the good company of men and women of other religions and of men and women of no religion doing this work. It is not true, as some pastors have said, that "Christians have come together" on this issue. Some Christians worked for its passage, some worked for its defeat; Christians do not speak in one voice.
In a democracy the majority always wins (except in the 2000 presidential election), but that does not mean the majority is always right. I am confident that even if I don't live long enough, my little grandsons will live in a country where the civil rights of everyone are guaranteed. And marriage will be honored as a commitment between two people who love each other.
The results of the vote are disappointing, but not demoralizing. None of us will give up our hope. None of us will retire our effort.

Pride
Way to go, North Carolina. I am very proud of my home state, the state I love, for voting for the marriage amendment.
You voted the right way, and you will never regret it. May God richly bless you and thank you.

    1. Mary Lou Wilson must be related to Joe Wilson (SC-2) of "you lie" fame. I agree that we cannot survive four more years of divisive rhetoric, but it is the Wilsonian type of rhetoric we cannot survive not the president's.

    2. Mary Lou is a constant. Mary Lou, at least the president can remember his youth and what he did and is open and honest about it. Mitt can't remember and is neither open or honest. What the president did, he did to himself. What Mitt did, he did to others.

    3. I guess neither of the Wilsons have ever been bullied or treated differently.

She complains about the ultra-wealthy being vilified, then calls OWS protestors "thugs". People like that live in a bubble...they really have no idea how they look from the outside.

  2. Maiden-A Catawba County pastor's sermon in which he called for gays and lesbians to be placed in a sort of concentration camp(surrounded by an electric fence) has spurred a protest planned at the church on Sunday.
Reidsville-The Ku Klux Klan protested in Eden last week, and this week some of its members have been passing out fliers inviting people in Reidsville to a cross-burning.
The Soviet Union had it's gulags, now an NC pastor is calling for gaylags.

    2. thanks Wordly, good article. Yes, preacher worley's idea that separating gays from lesbians would somehow mean the end of homosexual babies being born struck me too, lol. Truth is most gay men and lesbian women are born to heterosexual couples, and socialized from birth that the greatest happiness and the American dream means growing up, falling in love, and marrying that person. Why it's the happiest day of your life. Then when gays and lesbians grow up and fall in love, well we are told our pursuit of happiness, the happiest day of our lives, well, it's unconstitutional now, we are unworthy. Take away the right to pursuit of happiness. The preacher Worley would take away our right to Liberty by building gulags, and The Reverend Phillip Kayser, pastor of Dominion Covenant Church in Omaha, Nebraska, advocates re-instating the death penalty for gays, take away our life too.

    4. I still think some gay activists are just as bad as the Klan. While they profess diversity, their rhetoric is all but inclusive. It's their way or they will threaten and harass you until you comply.

It's clear that their hate is going to continue for a long by the daily barrage of letters to the editor. The people of North Carolina spoke on the 'Protection of Marriage Amendment'. However, gay activists are so hate filled that they will not accept the will of the majority of the people of North Carolina.

Gov. Perdue, a liberal nitwit and the worst governer in America, compares North Carolinians to people of Mississippi because of their vote. Why didn't she compare us to the people of California, because they voted the same way? California is known as the land of the fruits and nuts, A/K/A liberals.

The bottom line is that it's a kinky lifestyle no matter if you put lip stick on it or not. Let's just face reality and move on.

I still wish they'd do something about this bathroom situation.

    5. Bucky, some gay people are extreme too, but any group of people, persecuted, demeaned, bullied, and pushed to the margins for centuries tend to develop some extreme ideas. It was not the "they will not accept the will of the majority of the people of North Carolina." That's a lie, and you know it for a fact. 1.3 million is not a majority of people in a state of 9.8 million it's only 14%, which in any math is only a small minority.

    8. Yeah...one time a gang of gay thugs invaded my home, tied me up, and then styled my hair and gave my wardrobe a makeover.

It was traumatic and I was violated, but I got a Hugo Boss suit out of it. And my hair looks fabulous.

    11. I've never said gays have not suffered at the hands of some heterosexuals. That's was wrong, and is wrong.

What's happening now is that gays and lesbians are trying to FORCE their lifestyle on others, as normal. It's simply not normal to the majority of the people in the U.S. Instead of receiving sympathy from heteros for past abuse, I think there was a 'blow back' as a result of all of the name calling and yelling in the LTEs and on the streets that was done just prior to the vote. That's why the amendment passed so overwhelmingly.

    14. Plus, this aggressive sexual behavior by gays in public bathrooms and gyms is over the top. I hope we get more laws, and better enforcement in that regard. Who wants to join a gym anymore? You feel like you're being violated when you dress for a workout. There always seems to be some gay dude peering up your butt.

    15. No one, absolutely no one, asks to be brought into this world but everyone who is deserves life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. So what if homosexuality is not normal, billionaires are not normal either, in fact they are less normal than homosexuals, people with IQ's over 140 are not normal, christians are not normal, they make up only 33% of the worlds population. American did not become great because of it's pursuit of normalcy.

    16. It's okay to be abnormal, but when your abnormal behavior becomes disruptive, then it becomes a problem. That's what's happening now with gays and lesbians in the workplace, in schools, and in society in general.

    23. Most all young people are liberals. After all, 80% of all college professors are. So it makes perfect sense. Then they have to go work. Then the loser Democrats come along and want to start taking all of their money through taxes, and the fresh faced liberal young people get old and tired real quick. And the Republicans' views on things start to make sense.

Bobby, maybe we're getting tired of some things too. Gay activists aren't exactly the models of decorum.

  3. Good afternoon folks!
LTE 1: I recall an article from ~20 years ago that also offered up the theory that Paul was probably gay. Paul actually didn't advocate marriage for anyone unless you were consumed with lust as it was "better to marry than to burn". Paul thought the end was near, (sound familiar?) therefore people would be better off preparing for the end rather than pursuing trivial matters such as marriage.
LTE 2: Gov Perdue's statement was an over the top emotional response. While the majority of the voters on May 8th approved the amendment, you cannot say for certainty that the majority of the people of NC approved.
LTE 3: Obama's drug use was brought up 4 years ago and addressed. It's irrelevant to Romney's bullying past anyway. It's funny to me how so many childhood responses make their way into adulthood. One of the classics is when caught doing something wrong to say "but, what about so-and-so? He was doing it too! Why isn't anything being done to him?". Anyone who thinks any POTUS is going to sit in the Oval Office all 4 years, solve every problem, and unite a country that elects TB's to office is living on Fantasy Island.
LTE 4: Yes, the majority always wins in a democracy. That's precisely why the country's founders created a republic with a constitution and an independent judiciary. It was never intended for a vote such as A1 that allows for the tyranny of the majority to take place.
LTE 5: This is not a theocracy. It is not up to the govt to uphold religious tenets or doctrine. I noticed from the election map that the counties that opposed A1 (which included Mecklenberg and the Research Triangle area) are doing far better than the ones that supported it.

  4. Boy, that N.C. teacher sure put us on the map. Defending Obama in the classroom and all. I'll bet she'd have given that young man the same 'what for' had George Bush still been office.

I will say that the N.C. minister preaching negatively about gays was also not good.

It's seems N.C. is making the headlines more and more lately. I've always said, N.C. is the center of the universe.
