Even if that Mitt Romney quote-mining job on what President Obama said were true ("Edited quote is deceptive," July 26), the man would still have a point. "You didn't build that."
Steve Jobs didn't stand on an assembly line and put the iPod together. Henry Ford didn't attach motors to the Model T. Thousands of ordinary folks got up every morning and went to work and worked hard. Salesmen and customer-service representatives and assembly-line workers and repairmen — and customers — that's who built successful companies. Mostly customers.
Team owners don't win championships; players do. And they're assisted by coaches, trainers — and sports fans.
Nobody does it on his or her own. Nobody .
I'm not saying we should reward lazy people who sit at home doing nothing — and I'm not talking about the people at the top not being rewarded for their leadership contribution — I'm talking about hard workers who deserve to be compensated for their hard work.
There's nothing sacred about the salaries owners and business executives receive. They got those rich salaries because of the way the cards were stacked. And it's not "class warfare" to say that distribution of wealth — not "redistribution" — should be fair to the hard workers.
It makes no sense for businesses to reward those at the top with multi-million-dollar salaries while workers are being laid off. Everyone knows that it's not right.
Think Mitt Romney will look out for those workers? I don't.
The Colorado movie massacre was horrific. Seventy people shot, 12 dead. Our nation is in shock — innocence lost. Twelve people killed in seconds. Mostly young — all innocent, with lives full of promise, hope, a future.
This monster played god. Those who died had no choice. They deserved more. Why has this affected our nation so much? Is it because so many died in such a short time? Is it because one person took the lives of others? Innocent victims robbed of choice and life?
Forty-three other innocent people were killed in Colorado that day. We didn't hear about them at all. Why? They were innocent. They were young, with full lives ahead of them, hope, a promise of so much more. And then, there were 43 more killed the next day — again, in Colorado. In fact, on average, there are 43 innocent people killed in Colorado every day, 365 days a year, according to the Alan Guttmacher Institute, as well as www.abort73.com. And yet we go along as though nothing is wrong with that.
Twelve precious people were killed in Aurora, Colo., by this monster, and yet 43 babies in their mother's wombs were killed in the same state — no big deal. Problem is, Colorado accounts for only 1.3 percent of the abortions in America. Twenty-two of every 100 pregnancies nationwide end in abortion.
Who would have thought it was safer in that movie theatre in Colorado than it is in American mothers' wombs? May God have mercy on us.

During President Obama's term we have seen the demise of Osama bin Laden. We are finally seeing the end of military involvement in Iraq, and despite constant push-back from elected officials from the other party, President Obama continues his efforts to lift us out of a recession caused by the failed policies enacted long before 2008. I'll third that. For pole vaulting, I need one of those high tech fiberglass and carbon fiber poles.
Even so, the pole technology seems to have reached a plateau. The men's outdoor record was set in 1994 at 6.14 meters by Sergey Bubka of Ukraine. Only 17 men have ever cleared 6 meters, and only 8 of those since 2001. No one has done it since 2009.
Olympic qualifying begins Wednesday, so we'll see if anyone can end the drought. The Olympic record is 5.96 meters by Steven Hooker of Australia in 2008.
Pole vaulting probably originated in pre-historic times when people used poles to vault across ditches and streams. Since there are many such obstacles on farms in Friesland in the northern Netherlands, eventually the locals began competing to see how far they could jump using a pole.
Fierljeppen (far jumping) is now an official sport in Friesland with competition between clubs. The official world record is 21.51 meters (70.57 feet), held by Bart Hemholt of Hardegarip, Friesland, the Netherlands.

Among my friends are several R's who still like the wacky stuff, although the indies lead the way. The Dems seem caught up in the current Martini Madness.
My library friend, a one time bartender, is a crazed purist on that subject. Mention "mint" or "chocolate" martini in his presence and you will get a touch of apoplexy and his standard lecture:
"A martini is 8 or more parts gin to one part dry Vermouth, stirred with cracked ice until painfully cold, garnished with a cocktail olive. That is the only possible martini recipe.
Take away the olive and add a cocktail onion and you have a Gibson, which is most definitely not a martini. Add any other ingredient and you have made something that is not a martitini.
And if you want to make a drink with vodka in it, god help you."
I have this memorized from having heard it so often.
In other news, a peaceful group of Indians practicing their Sikh religion are shot by a gunman who apparently mistook them for Arabic Muslims (who, btw, have also shown themselves to be a peaceful group in this country). On a happier note, a gold medal to NASA for scoring a perfect 10 on their Martian landing.
LTE #1 - “Nobody does it on his or her own. Nobody.”
Exactamento! But when you embrace unrestrained capitalism, fairness, decency and the golden rule goes out the window.
Our school history books make it seem that America was founded by religious refugees seeking freedom to worship as they pleased. They conveniently brush over the fact that the first English settlement at Jamestown was a pure commercial venture, funded by venture capitalists in England and built on the backs of indentured servants and slaves.
And that has never really changed. When the slaves were “freed” in 1865, nothing much changed in their lives except the technical fact that they were no longer “property”. Most were forced by circumstance to remain where they were and work the same land as before, except that they were now referred to as “sharecroppers”. You get one guess as to who got the “share” and who got “croppered”. The boss man no longer owned the workers, but he owned just about everything else.
The names of our “robber barons” such as Astor, Vanderbilt, Morgan, etc are well known, but few are aware that Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Edison both stole ideas and patents from others, or that Henry Ford was a Nazi sympathizer who made millions building vehicles for Hitler.
The difference between a common crook and a capitalist is that one steals with one hand and the other with both. Bankers are born with four hands.
LTE #2 - Jeez Wes, how about some hyperbole for a change. I’ll tell you when innocence was lost…the first man and his fiancé were walking along and up popped another man and there went the ballgame.
Did slave owners, who professed to follow the teachings of Jesus really believe that slavery was “god’s will”? Did the settlers and cavalrymen who massacred American Indians believe that they were carrying out “god’s will”? In 1907, when two cheaply built and unsafe coal mines exploded, killing nearly 600 miners, was that “god’s will”? Was WW I “god’s will”? Was WWII “god’s will”?
Just when was it that people realized that nothing is god’s will, that evil is simply evil, and thus man’s will? There never has been such a thing as “innocence”.
As to the 43 “innocent” people killed each day in Colorado, fetuses are not people, either medically or legally…just more mumbo jumbo from the world of dunces.
Wes likes to tell everybody what a great Christian he is, but there is even a song about what he does: “It’s A Sin To Tell A Lie”.
LTE #3 - Mary Hoyt has the same last name as a famous local news editor of the past, so maybe she actually knows something about running a newspaper. Nah.
Perhaps someone comes to her home each morning and forces her to read Doonesbury at gunpoint. Whenever I see Cal Thomas’s byline, I just skip the piece because I know that it will be riddled with logical fallacies.
As to the 43 “innocent” people killed each day in Colorado, fetuses are not people, either medically or legally…just more mumbo jumbo from the world of dunces.
Rush __________
Speaking of dunces. You must like putting your dunce hat on at least once a day.
The Dunce, as always, sticks his nose into a discussion that he doesn't understand. The matter at hand is WP's ignorant use of the term "people" when referring to abortion.
Under the abortion law, fetuses are not legally considered people. And under any law, they are not medically considered people.
I know all about the fetal homicide laws...some of them actually make sense...most are just christian right grandstanding and are not enforceable...but either way they have nothing to do with the matter under discussion.
Duncy boy should find another forum more suited to his intellectual level...maybe one of those gun nut sites, or the ones for dumb middle schoolers. But he should stay out of the normal middle school sites, because they will tear him to shreds, as happens here every day.
As to the cake business, for once I agree with the Dunce. That doesn't say a thing about him...if you post several dozen comments a day on the same forum, you are bound to accidentally get it right once in a while.
The gay community has overreacted in this case. I mean, it's one lousy shop in some backwoods town. So who cares?
The owner has the right to run his business any way he wants. Since so-called christians are always raving on about the final judgment, let's let this fool find out what Jesus has to say to him on judgment day.
And some moderation would be a good idea in the Chik-fil-A case as well. There is no need to hold demonstrations...once the information is out about their anti-gay activities, most gays and most decent straights will stop eating CfA.
And since CfA chicken isn't really very good in the first place...they fast cook it under pressure, for christ's sake, the loony christians will soon tire of chicken and their church buses will run out of gas and CfA stores will be faced with reduced business as usual.
I believe that a CfA franchisee in NH is supporting a gay and lesbian activity.
As for the food, CfA chicken is no worse than the rest of the slop that the frequently misdescribed fast food restaurants plop down on their counters, perhaps even better than the microwaved mule meat purveyed at the burger chains. Wendy's does a bit better, IMO, with their burgers, chicken, and fries. Steak Escape in the Mall food court, does a good job with its hand cut fries.
I enjoy the hot wings appetizer at River Birch in Sherwood Plaza. The cooks are Latino, and when the wings are ordered spicy, those fellows pour the fire to 'em. I ordered spicy wings at Village Tavern on SA night. They were pallid competition.
Being the gourmet that I am, I prefer to order up a couple of K-9s at PBs on Hawthorne Rd....mustard ketsup and slaw. I know Clint Eastwood said absolutely nobody puts slaw on their hotdog, but this is the east coast.
Correctamente...the NH guy pointed out that his PR guy is gay and that he has other gay employees, many gay customers and is sponsoring a gay pride parade. Smart cookie.
Expect to see more franchisees doing this. Unfortunately, the "franchise" agreements expire yearly, so we might see retaliation from the home office in the form of cancellations, which would further demonstrate the idiocy of the presidente.
Have little use for fast food in general, but there are exceptions. Wendy's is not bad in a pinch and Cook Out is even better. I only know the one on Peter's Creek Parkway, so could be wrong.
But local places are better. Murphy's Lunch and Dill Pickle downtown cook your burger to order and by the time you've paid, it's ready. But my favorite is PB's, where an employee was assaulted last week during the "armed robbery" of the Gold Express.
Excellent burgers and dogs and excellent people serving them. At least one out of three times that I go there, I see Sam Ogburn of Home Realty and Sam knows his fast, cheap burgers.
My only question about River Birch is if you ask for only right wings, will they do it...like the fire part.
Actually at River Birch right now, ordered the wings. As for Left/Right, as a wannabe centrist, I don't distinguish. I prefer the little drums, anyway.
OT, yes he did. But I go off hours just in case. I've never tried the chili but may do so one day. I like to visit Consigning Women across the parking lot from PBs. Owner is quite funny and they have done well by me at times.
Want the best cheeseburger in town? Downtown Deli, in the same building as Womble, Carlyle and whatever, across from the old courthouse and next to the Reynolds Building.
A couple of old App State guys know how to do it. It's called the "Backyard Burger"...bacon, chili, cheddar, mustard, slaw, onion and tomato...plus their excellent fries...$7.95.
Only problem is that if you are employed, you will need some annual leave time to finish it, and afterward, maybe a few hours of sick leave to rest up from the experience. Pure heaven.
Ah yes, forgot that one. It was originally opened, I think, by the grandson, who was a friend of my son, of the owner of the old Simos Barbecue on Indiana Ave. I believe it was the first Cookout in town.
As to greasy, well, if you're going to eat french fries...does goodness top wellness?
Actually, nobody gives a poop what you've got in your freezer.
Anyone who would store CfA in the freezer is the ultimate sucker.
As always, Dunce intrudes into conversations that he cannot possibly understand.
Whoever triumphs come November, nothing much will change. But finding a good burger or dog really does matter. We're all gonna die, probably sooner rather than later...why not die happy with a good burger in your belly?
WW, my cholesterol got a bit high as well. My doc prescribed fish oil capsules twice a day (you don't have to drink it any more) along with a small adjustment in the cheeseburger zone (no more than one a week) and it has worked quite well.
Reasonable exercise is also a component...I walk 3 miles a day. Running 5 miles a day will not improve the response, and will, in fact, expose you to many other possible negative results, as the impact from running will almost certainly have long term negative effects on your hips/thighs/knees/calves and feet.
Mrs WW uses fish oil caps and swears by them. My cholesterol trouble was mostly genetics but the burgers didn't help. The Lipitor has me around 165. I don't know if I can come off it.
My doc threatened me with Lipitor as a way of getting me to give up two of my three cheeseburgers a week. Thank goodness it worked. We're still fine tuning.
When I consider the state of many of my high school classmates, I am delighted to be faced with such small problems. One of my longest term friends, who ran religiously for forty years, had to have a hip replacement, and can now barely walk for more than a block. And now he is having a knee problem as well.
Our high school track coach warned us about running, especially on hard surfaces. He was forty years old but could still do 400m in under 50 seconds and that fifty years ago. I'm glad that I listened. My friend now wishes that he had.

DeleteMuch prefer a Sapphire Martini with a lime twist. It might not be a purist's Martini, but gin and lime is like PB & J.
DeleteAnd FDR was a Martini drinker -- it's in our D DNA.
DeleteIn other news, a peaceful group of Indians practicing their Sikh religion are shot by a gunman who apparently mistook them for Arabic Muslims (who, btw, have also shown themselves to be a peaceful group in this country).
ReplyDeleteOn a happier note, a gold medal to NASA for scoring a perfect 10 on their Martian landing.
The Mars landing is a great achievement and the JPL folks have a right to be proud.
DeleteJust think what NASA could accomplish with just 10% of the $4 trillion that the Bushites pissed away on their two stupid wars.
LTE #1 - “Nobody does it on his or her own. Nobody.”
ReplyDeleteExactamento!
Wes is going give himself a stroke one of these days. Angry man.

Speaking of dunces. You must like putting your dunce hat on at least once a day.
At least 38 states have fetal homicide laws.

Gay Activists Continue their attacks on Christians:
ReplyDeleteGays Picket Cake Shop Owned by Christian Baker
http://radio.foxnews.com/toddstarnes/top-stories/gays-picket-cake-shop-owned-by-christian-baker.html
The Dunce, as always, sticks his nose into a discussion that he doesn't understand. The matter at hand is WP's ignorant use of the term "people" when referring to abortion.
ReplyDeleteUnder the abortion law, fetuses are not legally considered people.
Homicide is the act of a human killing another human. Humans are people.
DeleteYou're such a dope.
As to the cake business, for once I agree with the Dunce. That doesn't say a thing about him...if you post several dozen comments a day on the same forum, you are bound to accidentally get it right once in a while.
ReplyDeleteThe gay community has overreacted in this case.
DeleteAs for the food, CfA chicken is no worse than the rest of the slop that the frequently misdescribed fast food restaurants plop down on their counters, perhaps even better than the microwaved mule meat purveyed at the burger chains.
DeleteCorrectamente...the NH guy pointed out that his PR guy is gay and that he has other gay employees, many gay customers and is sponsoring a gay pride parade. Smart cookie.
DeleteExpect to see more franchisees doing this.
WW, isn't Eastwood the guy who said "Go ahead, make my day" or something like that?
DeleteIs it worth risking your life to get slaw? I think it is, but some might not.
Don't forget the chili.
DeleteTeddy G'S has good dogs, too. Where is PB's?
DeleteActually at River Birch right now, ordered the wings.
DeletePBs is right beside Arthurs at the corner of Knollwood and Hawthorne
DeleteAh, yes, the chili!
DeleteWant the best cheeseburger in town? Downtown Deli, in the same building as Womble, Carlyle and whatever, across from the old courthouse and next to the Reynolds Building.
A couple of old App State guys know how to do it. It's called the "Backyard Burger"...bacon, chili, cheddar, mustard, slaw, onion and tomato...plus their excellent fries...$7.95.
Only problem is that if you are employed, you will need some annual leave time to finish it, and afterward, maybe a few hours of sick leave to rest up from the experience. Pure heaven.
Their subs are great too, but who cares.
BTW, there is also a Cookout Burger place at Akron Dr and US 52. I like their burgers too. FFs are good but a bit greasy
DeleteBoy, when I'm not around, you guys get into some really, heavy, intellectual discussions don't you?
DeleteAh yes, forgot that one. It was originally opened, I think, by the grandson, who was a friend of my son, of the owner of the old Simos Barbecue on Indiana Ave. I believe it was the first Cookout in town.
DeleteAs to greasy, well, if you're going to eat french fries...does goodness top wellness?
I've got 10 Chick-fil-A sandwiches in the freezer in case anybody wants to know.
DeleteWellness...when my cholesterol hit 305, my Dr said no more of that and put me on Lipitor. I still like the FFs. Bad habit.
DeleteMy cholesterol is 120, but I put in five miles a day. That helps.
DeleteI got the grilled sandwiches, that keeps the cholesterol down too.
Actually, nobody gives a poop what you've got in your freezer.
DeleteAnyone who would store CfA in the freezer is the ultimate sucker.
As always, Dunce intrudes into conversations that he cannot possibly understand.
Whoever triumphs come November, nothing much will change. But finding a good burger or dog really does matter. We're all gonna die, probably sooner rather than later...why not die happy with a good burger in your belly?
And nobody has even mentioned Pulliam's yet.
Has anybody read the book 'Screwed' by Dick Morris?
DeleteI guess not?
DeleteWW, my cholesterol got a bit high as well. My doc prescribed fish oil capsules twice a day (you don't have to drink it any more) along with a small adjustment in the cheeseburger zone (no more than one a week) and it has worked quite well.
DeleteReasonable exercise is also a component...I walk 3 miles a day.
DeleteSome people have cholesterol levels of 4 and 5 hundred. 300 isn't that bad if your good cholesterol level is really high.
DeleteWalking is for sissies. Some days I run with ten pound weights in each hand.
You must be some pathetic little wimp Rush. How did I know that?
DeleteIf the cholesterol is genetic, maybe not.
DeleteMy doc threatened me with Lipitor as a way of getting me to give up two of my three cheeseburgers a week.
I'll out live you Rush. Doesn't that just tick you off?
DeleteI'll be slammin liberals for a long time to come.
