    2. If I have learned anything from this forum, it is, thanks to Dunce's endlessly repeated mantra, that anything "left" is evil and anything "right" is good.

So when I go to the grocer to buy wings*, I always ask the butcher for a package that includes only right wings. You might think that that would be difficult for the butcher, but you would be wrong.

Since almost all chicken these days comes from factory farms, each wing has a tiny "L" or "R" stamped right on it, just as with ear buds.

      * Actually, this never happens. I would be useless in military aviation because I am just not the wingman type.

With chicken, as with women, I prefer breasts, and especially, thighs. The only difference is that I have no interest in chicken brains, which is by far the tastiest part of any woman.

  2. "Kindness and respect"

In reference to the story "Kitten attacked by children euthanized" (July 19), this just seems to be another case of extreme cruelty that happens far too often in today's world. Any living thing on God's earth, whether animal or human, deserves to be treated with kindness and respect. A child who would inflict this type of torture on an innocent kitten either has an inherent or taught mental defect. I can only hope that the child or children involved in carrying out this act of violence will be ordered by the courts to get psychological help before they get older and commit worse atrocities toward society.

I would also like to commend the compassion shown by the other child who found the injured kitten, the father who transported it to the animal hospital, and the veterinarian who tried to save little Heaven's life.

    "A slap in the face"

The statement made by Maya Angelou about police officers waiting to kill five Trayvons and five Trayvettes is a slap in the face of every police officer and sheriff as well ("Angelou at town hall with Martin's family," July 26). I will fail to understand how any police department or any individual policeman or sheriff who reads her words as printed in the Journal can keep from responding with total disgust about how she sees them and feels about them. There has never been a more racist statement made by anyone than that.

How can any officer (policeman or sheriff) who has read her words regarding them offer her any protection, without regurgitating, when she is faced with a dangerous situation such as a home break-in or robbery? Just who will she call upon for help in such a time as that? She is a racist, bar none, and it really shows when she opens her mouth. She evidently knows why the caged bird sings.

    1. "Deal out 'Doonesbury'"

Your "Doonesbury" comic strip needs to be eliminated from your newspaper. It is not funny or even good political humor. It is simply Democratic propaganda.

Another example of the "liberal media."

      "Encouraging drinking"

Many thanks to the person who wrote the letter about alcohol ads ("Where are they?" July 18). He just didn't go far enough.

I totally agree; smoking is not good for anyone, and for some it causes cancer. But alcohol is a drug to which people become addicted. Has anyone ever been given a ticket for driving while smoking? Or had a wreck and killed someone or themselves because of smoking? Do we have a backlog in court because of smoking?

Has anyone ever counted the bars just in Winston-Salem? They are just encouraging people to drink. Why? More money. The people drinking think it's fun.

I could go on and on, but the only people who could do anything about any of this serve alcohol at their parties and meetings. And I doubt they ever read the editorial page.

    2. "Tormented and tormenting"

When I first heard the story of little Heaven ("Kitten attacked by children euthanized," July 19), I was horrified by what had happened to her. I can't imagine the terror this little creature felt — she, who probably had never known anything but love and kindness in her short life.

Some people would say, "It's only a kitten," but that's not true. She was this family's pet, and anyone who is a pet owner would agree that this little creature was more than "just a kitten." Heaven had just as much right to her life as anyone.

Little Heaven is now beyond help or hope. But it may not be too late for her tormentors. I hope that appropriate child-welfare agencies and their schools will look into the home lives of these children. Many psychiatrists feel that cruelty is a learned behavior; if this is the case, these children themselves may be at risk. They may have been the victims of abuse or may have witnessed abuse of someone else in the family.

Let us hope that appropriate intervention will ensure that these children will not graduate to even more serious actions that can't be remedied with a slap on the wrist.

  4. CHARLIE WEAVER – Charlie repeats Dunce’s bullshit about federal gun law. The law forbids gun sales under two conditions:
    1. Declared by a court to be insane
    2. Involuntarily committed to a mental institution.
Since neither applies to our shooter, Charlie and Dunce are dunces.

    Rush
    __________

The liberal dope forgets that other people actually read his nonsense, and fact check it. I'm going to have to send him to his liberal corner, with a 'dunce' hat on. It's only fitting.

You see, it seems that in his constant 'rush' to prove me wrong, 'Rush' made another mistake yesterday.

"Declared by a court to be insane" is not the language used on the ATF form 4473 to purchase a firearm as reported by 'Rush' the rusher.

If you refer to question 11(F) on the ATF form 4473, the language used is: 'Have you ever been adjudicated mentally defective' or been involuntarily committed. Not-"Declared by a court to be insane."

I wish 'Rush' wouldn't rush so much, maybe he would he get facts straight.

Here's the ATF forum for reference.

  10. LTE #1 & 5- As I mentioned before, cruelty to animals committed by children is often a precursor to anti-social personality disorder, which can range from just orneriness to full blown psychopathy.

Certainly, in this case, a thorough psychiatric examination would be in order. But the actual cause of ASPD has been hotly debated for decades…most professionals agree today that it is probably a combination of genetics and environment, so DSS should also look into the child's home life.

Unfortunately, once ASPD manifests itself, there is no known course of effective treatment for it and certainly no "cure". Working with schizophrenia and paranoia is child's play compared to working with ASPD.

ASPD has a much higher occurrence in the US than in other countries, so the environment clearly plays a major role. Studies, which are very difficult to undertake because of the nature of the illness…all ASPD sufferers lack a "conscience" to one degree or another, so are unreliable subjects for any study…have shown that between 1% and 4% of the population can be diagnosed at the highest level of ASPD, so if you "know" 1,000 people (a very low number*), you know between 10 and 40 actual psychopaths.

To put it on a national scale, there are somewhere between 3 and 13 million psychopaths in the US. Not all psychopaths are violent, although all serial killers, so far, have been psychopaths.

But they tend to seek careers in areas where they have the power to control other individuals…fields that are particularly notorious for attracting psychopaths include the military; law enforcement, including prosecutors and judges; politics (LBJ, Nixon & Cheney are widely seen as examples); medicine, especially psychiatric specialties and teaching.

    * It has been estimated that the average person (not including hospital clerks, or checkout persons in large stores or libraries…my friend tells me that 1,500 people pass through the central library here every day and some of the branches come close to that number) "meets" about 68,000 people in their lifetime. Of course, we cannot "remember" that many, but in my circle of friends we have estimated that we each have about 5-7,000 people who, if we encounter them somewhere, we are likely to have a brief conversation with. As we grow older, it becomes more and more difficult to instantly connect names and faces, but the faces are always there.

  11. LTE #2 - Maya Angelou has her own armed bodyguard. According to the theory of the CCW nuts, that's all she needs.

LTE #3 - As Harry Truman once said "I don't give 'em hell. I give 'em the truth and they think it's hell."

I'm sure that if the Tea Party ever develops a comic strip artist as smart as Gary Trudeau, newspapers will carry that strip as well…problem is, TBs are pretty weak in the sense of humor department. Exhibit #1: Sarah Palin. Exhibit #2: Michelle Bachmann. Exhibit #3: Herman Cain. Exhibit #4: Rick Santorum. Ad infinitum

LTE #4 - Oh my, poor Betty Cooke, who I know, has been writing pretty much the same letter for what seems like a century now.

But alcohol is a drug to which people become addicted.

    So is nicotine.

Has anyone ever been given a ticket for driving while smoking? Or had a wreck and killed someone or themselves because of smoking?

Yes. You haven't lived until you've seen some fool trying to drive and dance at the same time because s/he dropped a cigarette between the old legs.

Has anyone ever counted the bars just in Winston-Salem? Yes…and the rest of the country as well. They're called revenooers.

They are just encouraging people to drink. Yes they are.

Why? Because a business is expected to encourage customers to buy its products.

More money. Now you're catching on.

The people drinking think it's fun. It is.

I could go on and on, but the only people who could do anything about any of this serve alcohol at their parties and meetings. And I doubt they ever read the editorial page.

Actually, "the people who could do anything about any of this" read the editorial page religiously. That is one of many reasons why they have the power to do anything about anything.

We tried doing "anything" about alcohol once upon a time. It was called "prohibition". It didn't work.

    "Finish the Thought"

"North Carolina has tilted toward the right because ..." it hasn't. Like most of the rest of the nation, it just keeps wobbling around. This is why sometimes we have a slightly left of center President and sometimes we have a slightly right of center President and why we have never had a truly "liberal" or "conservative" President.
