Good AM, folks! Sorry for the belated posting.

  1. An opinion

Your letters column is only read by idiotic right-wing mouth-breathers who should be denied the right to vote due to insufficient brains.

What's wrong? I'm just expressing my opinion. Just like Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy.

    The Ryan budget

I was surprised to see "Fact-Checking claims from Romney and Ryan," an Associated Press story, in the Aug. 12 Journal.

The "nonpartisan" Congressional Budget Office is not a research institution. It provides estimates based on parameters given to the office by members of the Congress. It is impossible to judge the meaning of a report issued by this office without knowledge of the question asked and the given figures and constraints.

The Ryan budget was called "sensible, straightforward, honest, serious" by Erskine Bowles, a prominent Democrat and chairman of Obama's bipartisan National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform. Rep. Paul Ryan's handling of Medicare follows some of the recommendations of the Breaux-Thomas bipartisan 1999 Medicare reform commission and was endorsed by Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon. Sen. Wyden, a Democrat, has developed amnesia recently and in a very principled manner has forgotten the Ryan-Wyden Medicare plan (a most convenient lapsus mentis.)

The article, without further evidence, calls Ryan a consistent "if occasionally plucky conservative." He is accused of being a no-compromise congressman in spite of the facts above. He has authored a budget that addresses the complex budget issues and that has a better chance at congressional approval than the Obama budget.

I hope the Journal stops publishing this rubbish and joins the adult conversation that the country must have.

    Not racist

This is in response to the Aug. 4 letter "A slap in the face" about the statement made by Maya Angelou ("Angelou at town hall with Martin's family," July 26). If you are a black mother, you can understand Maya Angelou making that statement. For black mothers, there is a fear the day her son is born that one day he may be a Trayvon Martin simply because he is black.

That statement by Angelou was not a racist statement but a fact about black men.

    Innovative ideas

I want to put animal shelters out of business. But until pet owners accept responsibility to care for and spay/neuter their pets, the need will continue.

Bravo to Tim Jennings, director of Forsyth County Animal Control, and shelter manager Matt Smith and the great team of professionals at the Forsyth County Animal Shelter. Innovative ideas like Stay Together training by Melissa Legere and beautiful photographs by Project Pearl are really making a difference ("Who's a good dog? These!" Aug. 3). Keep up the great work until there are no unwanted pets.

I hope Legere will find an appropriate space to continue her program during the winter. Maybe a school gym or an existing dog training facility will work. It is a terrific program that deserves community support.

And to really make a dent in the number of euthanizations being done, adopt, don't shop.

  2. Matters little

The writer of the letter "A make-believe world" (Aug. 7) conveniently left out a couple of President Obama's accomplishments. Namely, the high unemployment and the out-of-control deficit. He was going to take the budget line by line to fix things.

If you don't have full employment and some of plan to lower the deficit, then all the rest matters little.

Being a conservative, I will not vote in this or probably any other election because no one can fix the fiscal mess we're in. I just hope down the road people won't wring their hands and say, "What happened?" So I'll stay home Election Day and watch the people go to the polls in their rose-colored glasses.

    Circumstances

I find it sad that many people, whom I know to be good people, seem to resent anyone receiving food stamps, welfare or health care. Some say they are too lazy to work and don't deserve help. I think there will always be some who take advantage of the system, but that shouldn't keep us from helping those in need.

Maybe people just don't understand the circumstances some others are born into.

There are those of us who were born to parents who loved us, and taught us the right way to live, but there are also those who were born to parents of addiction, abuse and obtuseness.

I did nothing to deserve the loving family I was born into, and neither did others deserve the disadvantages they received through no fault of their own. Do they have the same chance that I had? No.

Jesus showed more concern for the disadvantaged, handicapped and poor than those of wealth who built bigger barns in order to store their wealth in. He hung out with the least of those, and instructed us to care for them.

Maybe we should remember what Boaz said, in the Book of Ruth. He told the gleaners in the fields not to glean everything, but to leave something for the poor.

    Tax returns

Tell the liberals, "I am not worried about Mitt Romney's tax returns, but I am worried about my tax return."

    Correction

The Aug. 20 letter "Repeat offender" should have stated that Lance Snyder was driving a car. Because of an editing error, it said that he was driving a motorcycle.

  5. Ryan budget. An adult conversation the country must have. Right. A growing parasite class needs a growing parasite governing class. When the host is prepped for palliative care--then we might have an adult conversation.

  6. Not racist. Just racialist. Subtle difference.

  7. Matters little. You may or may not be a conservative, but you are a quitter. If people wring their hands down the road, it will be after round two of the financial crisis we are in has found us. We as a nation haven't been hit hard enough yet. Stand by.

  8. Circumstances. Lot of truth spoken. But why is government smack in the middle of everything? They sure take a mighty cut of the proceeds before it finds its way to the neediest.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Tax returns. A good indication somebody has been paying some taxes. That makes some people mad. Tax refunds maybe? You are just loaning government your money interest free and then you have to file to get your money back.

  10. Nice job of cutting and pasting Rush. At least you're good for something.

Ricky must be gay, most people don't give two hoots about Mr. Cathy, nor the time, to give two hoots. They're too busy working their hind ends off to pay all the taxes that Obama and his Democratic chronies are imposing on them.

    2. Now there's a great southernism..."mash the keys".

Jill McCorkle, who is one of NC's best novelists and certainly the most beautiful ever, became a professor at Harvard and married another Harvard professor and is a very sophisticated lady. But she likes to tell the story of her first visit to Boston.

She got into an elevator and someone asked her what floor she was going to. "Mash eight, please," she said. Dead silence and all eyes turn to her. It took her a moment to realize that no one else on the elevator had any idea what she meant. "Mash?"

    3. Wait til she hears that the cat is "back up under the porch"

    4. In fact, the cat is right far back up under there.

Occasionally my grandfather would be working his strawberry patch, which was next to the road. A carload of town folks would pull up wanting to know how far it was to Snyder's peach orchard.

"Right over yonder," my grandfather would say, pointing. "Bout two miles as the crow flies."

Of course, they were driving, not flying, and the road wound about a little, so it was more like four miles as the townfolks drove.

We would give him a hard time about that, but he always said "Did I lie? How far is it as the crow flies." Two miles.

    5. The cat is under the porch because it is fixin' to rain.

      Delete
    6. Well, let's hope that it gets cloudy then, because when it rained while the sun was shining, my grandmother always said that that meant the devil was beating his wife.

Southern women are thought to be purer in language than their northern counterparts, but it's not so. How do you say "Eff you, jack!" in female Southern? There's actually two ways, one a little subtler than the other:

"Well, bless your heart." is one. The other is "That's nice."

    10. Years ago, one of my staff, a Yadkin county denizen, informed me that a 7-course dinner in Yadkin County was a possum and a 6-pack. I replied that I would settle for a meatless 6-course meal.

      Delete
    11. Maybe if you give up the possum you can get some potato salad or a seventh Stella.

      Delete
    12. Whoa! 7 Stellas? I'm good for 3 40-cl chalices, then head home. The tater salad sounds good, though.

      Delete
    13. I was assuming that you were hosting this seven course meal, thus sharing the Stellas with your friends. Of course, there are those who hide their Stellas under a bushel (Matthew 5:15), and who can blame them.

I have learned not to casually mention to my neighbors that I have just acquired a case of Dale's Pale Ale ($40), because they will be knocking at my door for all kinds of vague reasons just in hopes of getting a sip or two. They can have all the Three Buck Chuck that they want, but I reserve the right to dole out the Dale's in a more orderly fashion.

  12. Good afternoon folks!
LTE 1: Two wrongs don't make a right. Two stupid remarks don't make for an intelligent comment.

LTE 2: Does Mr. Dominguez place nonpartisan in quotes because the findings do not fit his ideology? If you look at CBO's website, it clearly states it gathers data from a wide variety of sources and perspectives rather than just Congress. Yes, Mr. Bowles did praise Ryan's budget plan, but it's interesting to note that David Stockton, Reagan's budget chief, slammed it. "...that has a better chance at congressional approval than the Obama budget." - actually, it has already been voted down.

LTE 3: As I mentioned yesterday, if you haven't walked in the shoes, you have no right to judge.

LTE 4: Those photographs of the shelter pets was a brilliant idea.

LTE 5: LOL, the UR was already well on its way to double figures by the time Obama took office and as for the deficit...where has Mr. Powers been for the last 30 years? If you don't care enough to vote, why do you care to comment?

LTE 6: I probably pay more in taxes now than I made in a year working at Pizza Hut, and I am very grateful I'm in a position to do so. People who are able to support themselves and their families without need for any govt assistance should also be grateful instead of crying a river over those who do receive help. You never know when it will be you on the receiving end for need.

LTE 7: Unless you've done something illegal when filing, why should you be worried about your tax return?

Correction: Car or motorcycle, doesn't matter. Either way, Snyder could have killed hinself or someone else. Isn't there some sort of repeat offender law in NC?

And the towering intellect Ryan is off the track as well:

Paul Ryan has his facts wrong, blaming President Obama for the closing of an auto plant that stopped producing GM vehicles in 2008.

Ryan blamed rising gas prices under Obama for the closing. He echoed the complaint in an interview with a local ABC affiliate, suggesting it showed that Obama’s auto rescue was a sham.

“It didn’t help Janesville,” he said. “They shut our plant down. It didn’t help Kenosha. I represent there; they shut down the Chrysler plant.”

Ryan claimed, “I remember President Obama visiting it when he was first running, saying he’ll keep that plant open.” But Obama did not make such a promise, and the last SUV rolled off the assembly line in December 2008.

And the Republicans announced today that they will have a plank in their platform calling for a Constitutional amendment banning all abortions.

I said that this would be an entertaining campaign, but it has gone way past that and become a horror show.

The Grand Old Party is now the Grand Obtuse Party.
