Respect and appreciation
It's too bad self-proclaimed Baptist, Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school-board member Jeannie Metcalf, can't treat the smart-guy Buddhist from MIT, Peter Senge, who wants to make our children's educations and lives better by teaching critical thinking (“Board members question curriculum,” Dec. 5), with the same respect and appreciation she gives our local Moravians (“A priceless jewel,” Dec. 5).

Demeaning harangue
Is it too late to recall U.S. Rep. Virginia Foxx? Her harangue of “the tipster” and a House staffer for using the “members only” elevator was demeaning, elitist and low-class (“Staffer, Foxx in elevator kerfuffle” Dec. 7). Does she believe that the public can likewise be treated in the same way by our public servants? Maybe so.
In this little episode, she may have shown more of her true self than she wished.

Desperate
I was amused at the front-page story, above the fold, in the Dec. 7 Journal: “Staffer, Foxx in elevator kerfuffle.” The story documents a “gossip section” of The Hill, an inside-the-beltway political Washington newspaper. The referenced story uses an unnamed “tipster” to allege that Rep. Virginia Foxx berated an unknown staffer for using the “members of Congress only” elevator.
Neither the Journal nor The Hill could confirm the story, which indicates just how desperate the Journal has become to slam Foxx. At the end of the no-news article, the Journal mentioned that Foxx had beaten her Democrat opponents by significant margins in the four re-election campaigns since she first won the 5th Congressional District seat in 2004. The article fails to mention her voting record or her exceptionally high constituent service record.
I'm proud of Foxx and feel fortunate to live within her district. I'm sure glad that she beat “wonderful” Elisabeth Motsinger. As should we all be.

Fiscal-cliff avoidance
I’m afraid we are all going to have to endure some lifestyle adjustments in this new era of austerity. However, here are two seemingly simple steps this nation could take to minimize the pain:
- Stop encouraging, by financially rewarding, unwed, unemployed women to have multiple children and
- Cut off funding to all other nations, starting with the ones who hate us and our only democratic ally in the Middle East.

Getting it
What delicious irony. “They still don’t get it,” the title of a letter from a man who clearly doesn’t get it (“Dec. 8). Journal, you crack me up. Oh, this is so rich, where to begin?
About President Obama he writes, “He is the guy who spends and spends and never seemed concerned about the deficit he was building until after the past election.” I suspect the president — whose “spending,” incidentally, The Wall Street Journal cited as increasing at a slower rate than any president since Dwight D. Eisenhower — was concerned about all the unemployed Americans created by the previous administration, which spent and spent and never seemed concerned about the deficit it was building. In fact, let’s not forget Vice President Dick Cheney’s claim that deficits didn’t matter.
The writer adds, “the U.S. just keeps printing money and printing money.” Well, we’re running a nation here — what does the letter writer expect to happen? Does he expect the president to put the White House up for sale? Does he expect the U.S. Treasury to just close up shop? “We’ll have to content ourselves with the money that’s already been printed, folks.”
The president was handed a basket of dirt and asked to turn it into gold coins. It’s going to take some time. I think most of us “get it” just fine. And we elected the candidate who does, as well.

A wonderful excuse
I am aware — and who is not? — that this paper does not like Rep. Virginia Foxx. But was it necessary to print a story about an encounter in a U.S. House elevator on the front page, and in such excruciating and delicious detail (“Staffer, Foxx in elevator kerfuffle” Dec. 7)? Do you even know all of the circumstances or is this just a wonderful excuse to make Foxx look mean and petty?
What you don't write about, and what really matters, is how she is helping to bring the impending fiscal crisis to a responsible conclusion. That, however, might show her in a good light, and doing the job for which she was elected, and that would never fit your narrative.
How about some real news for a change?

what, no stadium LTEs?
ReplyDeleteI think the stadium is a bad idea. The City of Winston Salem has never missed an opportunity to make a bad decision though. I wonder if they'll get Billy Prim to build it?
DeleteHee...Hee....Democrats. They're always up to something no good.
As always, Dimbo is simply up to "know" nothing.
DeleteThe stadium is a matter for the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Public Schools and has nothing to do with the City of Winston-Salem.
Of course, when you are terminally ignorant, the distinction is probably very difficult to understand.
As usual, our resident nitwit doesn't know what he's talking about. The City of Winston Salem, through its governmental regulatory entities, will have to approve the construction of anything of the stadium's magnitude.
DeleteOf course, once you're a liberal nitwit, like Rush, you're always a nitwit.
Can you imagine going to court with Rush as your lawyer? He'd have both you and him in jail before the day would be out.
DeleteLetters complaining about the Journal covering Congresswomen Foxx's chastising a congressional staffer for using a member's only during votes elevator on the front page as a desperate news ploy. This story was all over the twitterverse as soon as it appeared in the Hill publication. In political circles it was national news. However, I don't think it will have any effect on her continuing congressional career.
ReplyDeletePelosi (D) is a bitch everyday of her political life, but do newspapers publish stories about her stupid actions? Seldom.
DeleteThrow in Hagan (D), the most worthless N.C. senator we've ever had, and our female representatives have been real doozies.
I can see people's point.

Under Obama the total federal workforce has surpassed two million for the first time since the first Clinton term, now sitting about the 2.2 ,million level.
ReplyDelete------------
Obama has added 143,000 more federal workers since taking office.
More food stamp recepients, more unemployed, in short, more people on the government dole.
But that's a good thing, right Arthur?
Which is still 800,000 less than the 3 million under Reagan and Bush I
Deletehttp://www.opm.gov/feddata/HistoricalTables/TotalGovernmentSince1962.asp
DeleteTruth is, it was over 2.6 million every year of the Bush II Administration, but don't let facts get in your way.
DeletePerhaps getting your story before posting would be best. The Executive Branch workforce is now over 2million which the last year that was true was 1995, but it went over 2 million in 2009. The Defense department has over 100k more workforce than under Bush.
DeleteThe Executive Branch was over 2 million from 1966-1996
Deletehttp://www.opm.gov/feddata/HistoricalTables/ExecutiveBranchSince1940.asp
In historical terms adjusted for population, the current executive branch is smaller than between the years 1966-1996.
DeleteNone of that matters to Bucktoid...since ignorance is next to godliness, he prefers being godly over being right, which is a good thing, because as far as anyone knows he has never been right about anything.

Delete(Reuters) - The U.S. Treasury's sale of its remaining stake in American International Group Inc will fetch $7.6 billion, bringing the government a total profit of $22.7 billion from its crisis-era bailout of the insurer.
ReplyDeleteGood afternoon folks!
ReplyDeleteLTE 1: 'Tis a shame indeed. Granted, the Moravian celebration of Christmas is a tad easier to grasp than an MIT professor's education system, so perhaps we should give Ms. Metcalf some slack for the proposal being too socialist (i.e. too difficult to comprehend in right-wing TB terms).
LTE 2: "...demeaning, elitist and low-class" - that's just Foxx being Foxx. After all of her pronouncements over the years, this latest episode should come as no surprise.
LTE 3: The article was actually a reprint of an AP story as opposed to an original Journal article, so any criticisms of the article itself should be directed towards AP. Foxx happens to be my representative as well, however my feelings about her representation lean more towards embarrassment than fortunate. Ms. Motsinger earned my vote over Ms. Foxx by default.
LTE 4: Unfortunately, Mr. Roberts' proposals amount to using coupons to save 10 cents on each grocery store trip to reduce a $10,000 credit debt. Why not encourage the fathers of the children of those "unwed, unemployed women" (btw, not all are unemployed) to start supporting their children, so those mothers don't have to depend on the govt? Furthermore, just how is the US supposed to maintain any influence or presence in a country if all funding is cut off? Do you just want to let China and Russia step in and divide all the 3rd world countries amongst themselves which is precisely what will happen if all foreign aid is discontinued?
LTE 5: Well, it is actually the letter writer rather than the Journal who is cracking up Mr. Fuller. Mr. Fuller is correct that the referenced LTE was quite silly. Financial collapses don't workd themselves out in just a few short years. It usually takes about a decade. Economics is one of those disciplines where "common sense" solutions are generally wrong, because you often have to make things worse in order to make the proper corrections.
LTE 6: Monday morning editor. Foxx is the US House representative for a very large portion of the Journal's readership, so it should not be surprising that any article, positive or negative that hits the AP wire concerning Foxx would be carried by the Journal. If Ms. Chapman objects to the printing of negative stories about Foxx, she should write Foxx to encourage her to act in a more dignified manner so there will be no negative stories to appear.
