Take action
As a black woman born and raised in North Carolina, I could easily have been a victim of the forced sterilization program because I was raised by a father who never questioned white officials. I continue to be horrified and depressed by what occurred as well as saddened by the lack of response by other residents of Winston-Salem. I have seen only one letter to the Journal regarding this atrocity.
Why are we not pushing Gov. Bev Perdue to follow up on this issue before she leaves office? Why are not my neighbors, friends and especially my Christian brothers and sisters raising their voices? The bill to compensate the ones who are still living was passed by the N.C. House but prevented from completion by state Senate Leader Phil Berger. Why would he do this?
I read John Railey’s column regarding Lela Mae Moore Dunston, judged to be “mildly retarded,” sterilized at age 13, who then died at age 63 this past July 9, shortly after hearing that the state Senate had let the legislation die (“Sterilization victim died waiting for help,” Dec. 9). I then read the letter “Saddened by silence” (Dec. 9) that stated many mental patients will be turned out on the streets on Jan. 1. Consequently, once again I feel I must write to beseech North Carolinians (religious and non-religious) to call our governor and legislators and beseech them to take action now !

Shameless exploitation
Franklin D. Roosevelt wanted taxes increased to pay for World War II. Congress voted to borrow. Calling theirs a bill “not for the needy but for the greedy,” Roosevelt enraged Congress. Senate majority leader Alben Barkley resigned, calling Roosevelt's comments a slur against every member.
Sound familiar? Spineless borrowing goes back decades. Only President Obama's effort to increase millionaires' taxes elicits false outrage, distortion and lies from conservatives that makes Barkley look like a toady.
Conscience tells us 14 percent taxes on millions is greedy, shameless exploitation of middle-class Americans. Faith tells us it's grinding down the face of the poor, selling the needy for a pair of shoes. Common sense tells us we'd have a labor shortage if lowering millionaires' taxes created jobs. It tells us that whether we spend, tax or govern too much, we must still pay as we go.
Republican and tea-party Stepford ideologues are not about to let conscience, faith or common sense stand in the way of forcing an end to positive government's overwhelmingly successful Social Security and Medicare by bankrupting government. Disaffected, militantly ignorant bigots, clawing at any scrap of power, pathetically assist.
We take for granted the America Roosevelt built. Obama's no Roosevelt, the ne plus ultra of politician-statesmen. But Obama's the one making sense about eliminating deficits and debt.
Support Obama and in 2014 give him the control Roosevelt had, with 333-89 and 75-17 Democratic majorities in the House and Senate, and return America to real prosperity.

Right to life
How ironic. Judge James Fox ruled the 2011 law passed by the North Carolina legislature for the sale of “Choose Life” license plates is unconstitutional, calling it “viewpoint discrimination in violation of the First Amendment” (“Judge rules against NC anti-abortion license plate,” JournalNow, Dec. 10). He noted the state could not issue a “Choose Life” plate without making a plate available for those who favor abortion rights.
It seems to me that his decision is unconstitutional and violates the First Amendment rights of pro-life North Carolinians.
Abortion advocates have the constitutional right to not buy the license plates for their cars while respecting the constitutional right of pro-life advocates to purchase them. That gives them more of a right than citizens who believe legal abortion is bad law — not to mention the constitutional right of defenseless fellow citizens in the womb to not be murdered.
Do we really need law degrees to see the logic of life — an unalienable right endowed by our Creator, as our Declaration of Independence so clearly states? To see the illogical, unconstitutional danger to and even usurpation of our rights as citizens by judges who refuse to uphold the Constitution by their erroneous interpretations and decisions and others who attempt to advance an agenda contrary to what our nation’s Founding Fathers established?
It is time for every American to read and study the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence in order to defend ourselves against judicial activism and tyranny.

The appropriate option
Once again Judge James Fox has forbidden “Choose Life” on state license plates (“Judge rules against NC anti-abortion license plate,” JournalNow, Dec. 10). The ACLU wants, in effect, equal time for the other side. But what would be the appropriate option: Choose Choose? Choose Choice? How about Choice Chews? Hmm.
I suggest “Choose Death.” Jack Kevorkian would approve. That's fair, isn't it?

LTE #3 and #4
ReplyDelete"Abortion advocates have the constitutional right to not buy the license plates for their cars while respecting the constitutional right of pro-life advocates to purchase them." You missed the legalese. During the 2011 legislative session, the North Carolina General Assembly passed House Bill 289, which authorized the issuance of a “Choose Life” license plate.
However, officials say the legislature repeatedly refused to authorize a plate that supported the countervailing position in favor of reproductive freedom.
Six amendments were proposed in the legislature to authorize an additional new plate that stated either, “Trust Women. Respect Choice,” or simply “Respect Choice.” The legislature rejected all six amendments.
Judge Fox concluded, “The State’s offering of a Choose Life license plate in the absence of a pro-choice plate constitutes viewpoint discrimination in violation of the First Amendment.” It's very simple, if the state wants to offer a "Choose Life" license plate, all it needs to do is offer a "Respect Choice" License plate too. Then advocates on both sides of this contentious issue will have the constitutional right to not buy either license plate for their cars.
Gays can also have a 'Choose a rump' plate for all I care.
DeleteShameless exploitation. Do what? This LTE is convoluted bi-polar like nonsense. Surely this is Marcialito Cam's "other name". Support Obama- that fool in the White House? "as people fear Obama will take away gun rights." That only proves how truly ignorant some people are about the Constitution and their Constitutional right. Obama cannot take away the second amendment to the constitution. It can only be done in two ways, one which has never been used. The second amendment could be repealed, yes, just like the 18th Amendment was repealed. The first method is for a bill to pass both houses of the legislature, by a two-thirds majority in each. Once the bill has passed both houses, it goes on to the states. The second method prescribed is for a Constitutional Convention to be called by two-thirds of the legislatures of the States, and for that Convention to propose one or more amendments. These amendments are then sent to the states to be approved by three-fourths of the legislatures or conventions. This route has never been taken. Regardless of which of the two proposal routes is taken, the amendment must be ratified, or approved, by three-fourths of states. There are two ways to do this, too.
ReplyDeleteI wonder, is it a good thing that ignorant people are stocking up on guns?

Ex-babysitter says Newtown, Conn. school shooter Adam Lanza's mother warned: Don't turn your back on the boy - not even to go to the bathroom.
His teachers, his neighbors, even his own mother knew about his mental problems. Yet not enough was done to treat him to keep his illness under control.
And still his mother, a gun enthusiast as reported by neighbors, bought 3 guns and took her son to a shooting range to learn how to use these weapons, and Republican legislatures all over the US have stripped mental health budgets? Why does a mother who tells a baby-sitter not to turn her back on her son for any reason, not even to go to the bathroom, go out and buy military weapons and take this troubled young man to shooting ranges? That's as brilliant as selling arms to IRAN.
I'm sure there are those that would like to repeal the Second Amendment. That is not being proposed, but arms can be and should be "well regulated." Mental health and our exceptional culture of violence must also be part of the discussion. I've seen these video games, movies, the MMA, even the NFL, NHL, Nascar, and it's all about Fight or Flight and danger of bodily harm. When our fight or flight response is activated, sequences of nerve cell firing occur and chemicals like adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol are released into our bloodstream. These patterns of nerve cell firing and chemical release cause our body to undergo a series of very dramatic changes. Our respiratory rate increases. Blood is shunted away from our digestive tract and directed into our muscles and limbs, which require extra energy and fuel for running and fighting. Our pupils dilate. Our awareness intensifies. Our sight sharpens. Our impulses quicken. Our perception of pain diminishes. Our immune system mobilizes with increased activation. We become prepared—physically and psychologically—for fight or flight. We scan and search our environment, "looking for the enemy."
DeleteWhen our fight or flight system is activated, we tend to perceive everything in our environment as a possible threat to our survival. By its very nature, the fight or flight system bypasses our rational mind—where our more well thought out beliefs exist—and moves us into "attack" mode. This state of alert causes us to perceive almost everything in our world as a possible threat to our survival. As such, we tend to see everyone and everything as a possible enemy.
DeleteThere are many side effects of constant F/F response, one being a heightened degree of sexual drive after the danger, risk, or external excitement has ceased. I wonder if perhaps this has anything to do with our exceptional overload of the F/F producing things in our culture?
DeleteThat's what I like about liberals. You don't have say much, and they'll go on and make a jackass out of themselves for you.

President Obama has put forth an offer on taxes that I suggested sometime back: raise 'em on people making > 400K/year. Obviously, I agree now. I suggest that the rate not jump immediately to 39.5%, but slide upward as incomes increase, perhaps surpassing 39.5% at the $1MM level. Time for the R's to blink on the threshold for increase, anyway.
Only briefly commented here in past days, but Hillary Clinton's alleged concussion is mighty convenient. What hospital treated her? Given Secretary Clinton's very tenuous relationship with the truth, and her avoidance of accountability over her career, this accident is questionable. She has faced Congressional grilling before, but now she cannot use amnesia as an excuse, as she frequently did when testifying during her husband's regime.
My goodness. Now we have LTE's over license plates. The judge's ruling was correct. We have a budget situation unresolved, 28 corpses in CT, civil war in Syria, and sick souls at Westboro Baptist Church. License plates?!
"Only briefly commented here in past days, but Hillary Clinton's alleged concussion is mighty convenient. What hospital treated her? Given Secretary Clinton's very tenuous relationship with the truth, and her avoidance of accountability over her career, this accident is questionable."
DeleteJesus, get down in the sewer with Buckboy. Maybe you ought to get some facts before you shoot off your mouth.
Poor Rushie...he hates the truth so much that he'll say anything to try to mask it.
DeleteHillary is a liberal sleazy ball, just like her husband.
Please enlighten me with facts. The fact is the timing is interesting, and Hillary has had a problem with being called into account over the years. And a problem with the truth. Remember, when the NY Times endorsed her for Senate in 2000, they had to concede her "considerable ethical baggage." Saint Hillary she is not.
DeleteShe's a sleazy sleaze ball.
DeleteClinton fell ill with a stomach virus while overseas (which isn't uncommon). She fainted from dehydration (due to an inability to keep food and drink down) and konked her head upon falling thus rendering concussion.
DeleteI had the same happen to me a year ago on January 5th. I had been running a fever, became severely dehydrated and my blood pressure dropped to 60/49. I began to black out but was able to get to the floor and lie flat. Fortunately my neighbor with an infant, Jackie, was there and called 911. I spent 2 days at the hospital being re-hydrated.
DeleteI do not doubt you two about your own incidents. What hospital did she check into for this concussion? The Clintons' history with the truth is that they would rather climb a tree and lie rather than stay on the ground and tell the truth. Will the concussion last forever, so that she can never testify?
DeleteThank you, dotnet. I don't see it as my place to enlighten anyone who is perfectly capable of getting any facts that they want themselves.
DeleteOf course, when the word "Clinton" pops up, they don't want the facts, which would inhibit the usual knee jerk reaction, based on a haze of not knowing.
BTW, here's the name of the hospital where Hillary was treated: _________. Despite your unreliable news sources, she was not treated at any hospital, but by private doctors on the scene.
As old Spiro said, "Nattering nabobs of negativism."
You may address me directly, OT. And yes, I intensely dislike both Clintons. And yes, both have been established as liars. Questioning their veracity is not a descent into sewers. That was accomplished when Billyboy was President.
DeleteOne would think a dedicated public servant would say she cannot testify now, but will soon after the concussion heals and would hasten to inform as she could. Football players are usually back in action in a week or two. She fears having to testify might affect her 2016 presidential aspirations. We can only hope.
Of course it was private doctors. And it still remains mighty convenient.
Football players are generally young well conditioned athletes who have a regular schedule and don't travel 10,000's of miles in a week on an airplane, going without sleep trying to help solve some of the planets most complicated and stressful situations. They play a game.
DeleteTrue, but Clinton needs to answer questions, not collide with hurtling musclemen in plastic armor. She does not want the accountability.
DeleteAs I said, say Clinton, watch the knee jerk. Only one of your blind obsessions.
DeleteWhile you live in your haze of Clinton-hate, the rest of the world has been watching a bravura performance by the Secretary of State...not just my opinion but shared widely internationally.
The testimony we are discussing is small potatoes by any measure except as a political weapon...anyone who has ever actually been in combat can tell you that no amount of investigation will ever find what "really" happened, because what "really" happened depends upon which part of the battlefield you were standing on at the time...and there were several parts to this battlefield.
And since this was a CIA operation and not a state department operation, you should be asking the CIA, who I assure you, will tell you nothing.
"She does not want the accountability"
Really? I'm sure you have evidence to present on that matter...actually no, just more BuckTalk.
When she shows to testify, however minimally, I will retract my opinion that she does not want accountability.
DeleteYes, my other "obsession" is coercive unions. Another "obsession" of mine is that certain sacred cows here never do anything wrong: Obama, the Clintons, unions. And anyone right of center never does anything correctly. Amazing the Dem icons (dislike the term) of the era. Once, there were leaders, nevermind if I agree with their policies: FDR, Truman, Stevenson, Johnson. Now, it's the Clintons. That's a bar set low.
OT, how about your "newspaper of record's" comment about "considerable ethical baggage"? That's not Bucktalk, but NYTimestalk.
DeletePoor.....Rushie, he knows he's fool, but he doesn't like anybody else telling him he's one.
DeleteThe Times, as it usually is, was correct in 2000. But that was 2000 and we are now in 2012, about to roll over into 2013. If you want to stay in the 20th century (which 2000 was part of) that is your business.
DeleteIn case you missed the last 12 years, here is what a publication that could not remotely be classified as a friend of the Clintons or any Democrat, had to say about Hillary recently:
"Watching Secretary of State Clinton over the past four years, few people argue with the work she’s done internationally on our country’s behalf. She’s been a tremendous asset to the administration, and regardless of who is president, the next secretary of state has big shoes to fill.
In recent weeks, she met with foreign leaders in eight countries, delivered 30 speeches, held 28 bilateral meetings and attended two dozen more events at the United Nations.
Through her years in the Senate, and now at the State Department, she also has engineered a shift in public opinions about herself, which were decidedly mixed during her husband’s presidency. Mrs. Clinton’s job-approval ratings, near 70% when most recently surveyed compare favorably with her first lady years, when her approval rating bottomed out at 43% in Gallup polling after her failed attempt to overhaul health care.
Put me in the camp that doubts Secretary Clinton will seek the presidency in 2016. Four years is a long time to recuperate, and perhaps she will. That said, this is a woman who has been on a non-stop track for two decades. She’s probably relishing a new chapter.
For my money, she would be a terrific appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court, though at 64, she might not provide the longevity that presidents currently want with their choices.
Regardless of what’s next, Hillary Clinton has come a long way from her days as First Lady, and our country is the better for her service."

What kind of public servant scoundrel would duck their responsibility to testify before Congress on the improper handling of the Benghazi Attack? A Clinton? Naaaaah.
DeleteI stubbed my toe, I can't testify today.
Oh brother!
I noted last night that some staunch NRA supporters in Congress are indicating that changes may be in order, most notably perhaps Senator Manchin. Bob's point above re "well regulated" is well taken. I remain generally opposed to restrictions on gun ownership and transportation by non-felon citizens, but if mag capacities and weapons configurations are limited somewhat, somehow I will not feel that my liberties have been infringed. I also have no problem with licenses for possession and use, as for drivers' licenses, provided not too expensive or restrictive. Such measures sitll will not absolutely prevent atrocities like Newtown, but we on the ownership side of firearms are going to have give a bit.
ReplyDeleteWhy should law abiding citizens' rights to possess certain types of weapons be curtailed because a bunch of untreated, mentally ill people in Arizona, Colorado, and Connecticut go on shooting rampages?

We've tried it the liberals' way, and it hasn't worked. Gun laws don't stop idiot criminals from getting guns and killing people.

Good afternoon folks!
ReplyDeleteLTE 1: "Why are not my neighbors, friends and especially my Christian brothers and sisters raising their voices?" - A very good question. Because those who were sterialized were poor and largely minority? Unable to admit such atrocities could happen over such a long period of time in our state? Without question, the victims have absolutely no political clout by themselves to force legislatures to act, so it's up to those whom legislatures will listen to.
LTE 2: At least Boehner is open to increasing taxes at the upper limit. Due to laws and public demand, the govt is going to have to continue spending. To expect a drastic cut in spending with a growing population and an increasing global economy is not realistic. The question is will those expenditures be paid for as we go along, or are we going to continue to borrow? Mr. Miller's dreams of a 333-89 D House and 75-17 D Senate are also simply fantasies.
LTE 3: "It is time for every American to read and study the Constitution..." - then, we will hopefully not be "treated' to such a profound misunderstanding of how the Constitution works as this LTE demonstrates. The very fact that Ms. Buckler refers to a judge's ruling as "unconstitutional" shows a total ignorance of how our goverment works. Btw..if you really want to study the Constitution, then go to law school. Good luck getting in and staying with this display of logic.
LTE 4: There are tragic cases where the end result will be death regardless of the decision. The only question is will it take place in the first trimester or shortly after birth (and that's if a miscarriage doesn't happen first). Who should make that decision, the parents or the govt?
My computer, no doubt a 20th-century dinosaur, is not letting me reply directly in the thread anymore. Re SOS Clinton and the last century: OT, your thesis is that a 21st-century leopard can change her spots. I will remain skeptical, but like our pro- v. anti-union exchanges, we have taken it about as far as we can go. She will not testify, concussion or no, IMO, and that will be that, except for cranky comments for a while longer.
ReplyDeleteI doubt that Clinton will run in 2016. I suspect the prospects of a long campaign will dim the luster of the potential prize. Also, some of the current Dem ardor for her will probably ebb as the electorate looks for fresher faces. That may also have an effect on the prospects of the heir apparent, VP Biden. Perhaps some a moderate Dem or two will toss his or her hat in the ring.
She'll run. Especially if the polls are in her favor. Come on Stab.

Delete☺☹☺☹☺☹
No doubt, that would make the Buckboy/FoxLies® fringe contingent happy. For the moment I will stick with the rational thinkers. Apparently, Hillary accomplishes more for her country in almost any day than her critics have accomplished in their entire lives. But through their tiny window to the world, they obviously know better than the rest of us.
'The Economist reported in late March (2012) that "since taking office, Mrs. Clinton has visited 95 countries (now 100) and logged some 730,000 miles, sometimes cramming more than a dozen meetings into a single day." That's some serious mileage, and the numbers have only increased since that report. In fact, it seems that Madame Secretary has been so busy that she's not even sure how tired she is. In January she stated "It would be a - probably a good idea to just find out how tired I am ... "
...
There are a few options for Clinton after she gets her moment of rest. She has continually denied that she'll run in 2016. But many remain hopeful. The next round of presidential campaign drama is over four years away, and a lot can happen within that time. With one of the most impressive resumes for the job (years serving in the senate, bolstered foreign policy experience as Secretary of State, and don't dismiss her time as First Lady) it would be truly a shame if she didn't give it one more shot.'

As I said, I dislike the Clintons. I disliked Bill when he commented about the 1991 Gulf War: "I oppose the war, but support the troops." How the hell do you do that? Good ol' phony "Have it both ways" Clinton.
DeleteI actually saw Hillary in person when I lived in L.A. I was familiar with her politics by then, as well as cattle futures and other deals now forgotten. I stood about 20 feet from her while she spoke. She was authoritative and informed to be sure, but not very pleasant, almost abrasive, in spite of her approving audience, the business management and editorial staff of the L. A. Times. Nevertheless, they cheered her. And yes, I was respectful to the First Lady as well.
As for the praises that OT is pasting, well and good, but her politics and mine diverge, this no vote for her in 2016 if she runs.
'I disliked Bill when he commented about the 1991 Gulf War: "I oppose the war, but support the troops." How the hell do you do that? Good ol' phony "Have it both ways" Clinton.'
DeleteOnly a non-combatant could make such a statement.
In Viet Nam, many of us opposed the war, but supported the troops. Most, thanks to the draft that favored the middle and upper class over the poor, had no choice. Some of us had a choice and decided that duty came before our own personal safety or even "honor", which was pretty much absent in Southeast Asia except for the hundreds of thousands of draftees who did their duty, like it or not.
Those of us who chose to be there flew sorty after sorty, day after day, week after week, month after month to supply those who did not choose to be there with fuel, ammunition and food, without which they would have died. It was dangerous, dirty, exhausting and sometimes frustrating work, and some of us were killed in the process, but we were thankful that our efforts helped keep most of those who had no choice alive.
I have no problem with anyone who found a way to avoid service because they opposed the war. Many of my friends then and now are among those numbers.
I do have a big problem with cowards like W. Bush, Cheney, Wolfowitz, Mitty and many others who said that they supported the war, but found a safe way to hide from it. Any of us over there, despite our willingness to serve our country, would have been delighted to be relieved by any one of those lowlife chicken hawks.
On my next to the last day in country, a pilot and a navigator/gunner in a Huey Cobra who had earlier saved my life were killed. I was the first person on the scene to try to rescue them, much too late. Every time I see Dick Cheney's smirking face, I see their dead faces, one of them decapitated by .50 cal machine gun fire.
People who have never served should keep their opinions to themselves.
Clinton never served either. Remember, he "loathed the military." He didn't keep that opinion to himself while you were serving.
DeleteJesus, read what I wrote:
Delete"I have no problem with anyone who found a way to avoid service because they opposed the war. Many of my friends then and now are among those numbers."
I understand why people loathed the military, because the military, and especially General Maxwell Taylor, lied to us and the rest of the world over and over again throughout the "war".
One of our favorite in-country jokes was the "Light at the end of the tunnel" quote from the fool William Westmoreland. Our answer: "Whoo, whoo! the train kept a-rollin' all night long" with lyrics lifted from the Yardbirds.
You need to get off the fucking Clinton train.
As to guns, since the gun nuts insist on a laughably false interpretation of the 2nd Amendment, let's take a look at how they look to sane adults:
ReplyDeleteHow To Be A Sissy
Leave it to Rush to find the biggest collection of liberal HS on the net.
DeleteHa, I'd recommend a more reliable rifle.
DeleteOT, was that old bat in your climate change post the AZ gov?
Yep. She don't look so good up close, does she?
DeleteAnd unfortunately, the rifle depicted is supposedly the one that the Sandy Hook shooter used. It doesn't take much of a gun, or a man, to kill sitting ducks.
As to "Rush" finding the biggest collection of liberal HS (we assume that that means "horseshit", although it could mean "high school", a level never obtained by "Bucky") on the net, "Rush" did not find any such thing.
Delete"Rush" found the old Charles Atlas ad and "Rush" found the current Bushmaster ad and then "Rush" put them together to create a funny and chilling presentation that speaks to the stupidity of the gun nut lobby.
If "Bucky" ever finds herself capable of doing the same thing, we would truly love to see the result.
ROTFLMAO in advance.
As the bar girls in Viet Nam liked to say "Nevah happen GI".
Oh barf. Paging Dr. Freud...
ReplyDeleteI doubt if Freud or anyone else can help us now.
DeleteAs repeated ad nauseum, all great empires have fallen from the rot within.
Ours will be guns and violence and religion and ignorance, the first two being much the same thing, as with the last two.
Meanwhile, my European friends look on with horror, asking can this actually be happening in America? The answer being "Yes, it can and is."
