Winston-Salem Journal LTE TH 06/28/12

Confusing logic
The writer of the letter "Political scheme" (June 25) is a little confused about logic. He writes:
"Many say that these individuals should not be punished by being deported because they were brought here by their parents. But if this reasoning is pursued to its logical conclusion, then no parent would ever be sent to prison for murder or any other crime because that would punish their children for something the parents did."
But that's not a logical analogy.
In the first situation he writes about, the children are being punished for something their parents did. In the second situation, the children aren't being punished for something their parents did — the parents are being punished for something the parents did. That's not the same at all. It would only be analogous if the children were being thrown in prison for the murders their parents committed.
Which would be about as logical as kicking children out of the country for something their parents did.
I think this illustration exemplifies the level of reasoning behind opponents of the DREAM Act. Another good reason to be on the other side of the issue.

A big night
There were eight Minor League Baseball All-Star Games across America recently on or around June 19. Some of the games were in pretty compelling places to visit, like Charleston, S.C. and Port Charlotte, Fla. Out of all the possible games that he could have attended on June 19, Pat O'Connor, the president of Minor League Baseball, chose to come to Winston-Salem for the California League-Carolina League All-Star Game. That speaks volumes about Minor League Baseball's commitment to Winston-Salem.
Our community equally demonstrated its commitment to baseball and rose to the occasion to make the All-Star Game a resounding success. The All-Star Game also was a home run in terms of economic impact. Hundreds of players, their families and fans from across the two leagues came to Winston-Salem to stay in hotels, dine and shop. The FanFest on Fourth Street the day before the All-Star Game was particularly positive for downtown.
The biggest impact of all came when nearly 7,000 baseball fans watched the Carolina League's 9-1 triumph. It was a spectacular All-Star Game evening filled with skydivers, an airplane flyover, food and fireworks, capped off by a late-night party at Ziggy's. Visiting team managers, players and fans bragged about the warm hospitality they received and were enthusiastic about the experience at BB&T Ballpark.
On behalf of the Winston-Salem Dash, who served as the host team for the event, thank you to everyone who helped to make the All-Star Game a winning event for the entire community.

Saturday, we asked readers to complete the sentence: "If the Supreme Court rejects the health-care-reform act ..."

* * * * *

"… our nation will be saved from economic chaos. Many businesses will begin hiring again, of their own volition. The Supreme Court will have faithfully done their job."

WES PATTERSON

* * * * *

"If the Affordable Care Act is struck down entirely by this right-wing activist Supreme Court, ignoring all precedents, then the current broken health-care system becomes owned entirely by the Republicans. As James Carville has said, when Americans start to complain about unaffordable premiums, medical services not covered by their plans, or being unable to get coverage at all due to pre-existing conditions, Democrats can say, 'Talk to the Republicans. We Democrats tried to fix it, but this is the health care system Republicans fought to protect.' "

KAM BENFIELD

* * * * *

"… it won't matter to me, as I haven't had health insurance for years anyway."

WILLIAM SAMS

* * * * *

"… it will adversely affect my own family, along with millions of others, and prove, as we already suspect, that now the highest court in our land is controlled by politics. How sad."

CYNTHIA GOUGH NANCE

* * * * *

"… insurance companies will be able to drop our coverage when we get sick."

CHARLES E. WILSON

* * * * *

"When and if the Supreme Court strikes down Obamacare it will be time to celebrate that the Bill of Rights is still alive. Hopefully those in Congress will finally learn that they are not omnipotent but are restricted by the Constitution as it was written, not as you imagine it was written."

    1. Ha, ha. The rest of Wes's statement is "...Many businesses will begin hiring again, of their own volition...", which tells us more of what we already know about him. Since the job count hit rock bottom in late 2009, the private sector has already created about 4.3 million jobs.

      And as for the Bill of Rights, it was in critical condition after 8 years of the Bushites and received its death blow when Scalia, Alito, Thomas & Co. declared that a corporation is a person.

      We keep saying that we'd like to have more conservatives on this forum, and Wes is sometimes mentioned. Do we really want just another echo of the Dunce?

    Initial Thoughts on the Health Care RulingAnd in really important Supreme Court news . . . »
    Was Scalia’s Dissent Originally a Majority Opinion?
    David Bernstein • June 28, 2012 11:23 am
    http://www.volokh.com/2012/06/28/was-scalias-dissent-originally-a-majority-opinion/

    Scalia’s dissent, at least on first quick perusal, reads like it was originally written as a majority opinion http://lsolum.typepad.com/legaltheory/2012/06/evidence-that-the-votes-shifted-after-conference-initial-vote-to-declare-mandate-unconstitutional.html (in particular, he consistently refers to Justice Ginsburg’s opinion as “The Dissent”). Back in May, there were rumors floating around relevant legal circles that a key vote was taking place, and that Roberts was feeling tremendous pressure from unidentified circles to vote to uphold the mandate. Did Roberts originally vote to invalidate the mandate on commerce clause grounds, and to invalidate the Medicaid expansion, and then decide later to accept the tax argument and essentially rewrite the Medicaid expansion (which, as I noted, citing Jonathan Cohn, was the sleeper issue in this case) to preserve it? If so, was he responding to the heat from President Obama and others, preemptively threatening to delegitimize the Court if it invalidated the ACA? The dissent, along with the surprising way that Roberts chose to uphold both the mandate and the Medicaid expansion, will inevitably feed the rumor mill.

      Delete
    2. Wordly, whoever wrote that doesn't know how the supreme court operates. In May, after the public arguments, none of the justices would have taken any hard position. The bulk of the work at that point would have still been in the hands of the justices' clerks.

      If you follow Roberts' questioning during the public argument, it was pretty clear where his mind was going right from the start. I guessed that both he and Kennedy would vote for the ACA...I was certain about Roberts, less so about Kennedy, which turned out to be right.

      Whoever wrote that was just trying to make a political statement...even the President cannot pressure a justice. The rumor mill needs to shut down so that we can get back to the business of the economy.

      An excellent example in the post just above...Dunce knows nothing about the ACA except what he hears from Rush Limbaugh who he says he doesn't listen too but quotes exactly every other day at least.

      If the USA was made up of people of the Dunce's caliber, we would still be flying the British flag.

      Credited to Lennon-McCartney, but actually written by Paul McCartney and performed (multitracked) by him and Ringo Starr

    Somehow I feel like one of Jerry Sandusky's victims right now, and I've got my pants on.

    You're a victim of yourself.

    If it's a victory for all as Obama says, why do I feel like one of Jerry Sandusky's victims while I still have my pants on?

    Phargo, he's also an echo, echo, echo of himself. Like any good parrot he just repeats the same old shit over and over and over.

    If he ever left the forum for good (sorry, no such luck), if we missed him (ha,ha) we could easily recreate him simply by copying and pasting his endlessly repetitive posts on the same dumb subjects.

    It could be random, because context has no relationship to any of his posts.

    1. Indeed! An historic week:

      1. Arizona bigot law shredded.
      2. Texas "Stand Your Ground" thug gets 40 years.
      3. ACA exonerated.
      4. To be capped tomorrow with Killer's bond hearing.

      Somebody must have slipped some LSD into the Tea Party's sewage.

    2. There was the USSC decision that stopped U-words from extracting money for ad hoc political purposes. Now they must get members to opt-in instead of using a sly opt-out procedure.

    3. Oh, cuz, you've got me laughing yet again. "U-words" huh?

      That was truly an amazing decision...I doubt if the Supreme Court has ever in the same week forbidden both underwear and u-boats from extracting money, but they did indeed do it. I hear that there is a decision coming soon on U-2s and u-turns.

      Even the Supremes now understand that once you get U-words on your mind, you'll never get rid of them.

      Baby love,
      Oh, baby love,
      Oh how I need "U"r love...

  23. Rand Paul: "Just because a couple of people on the Supreme Court declare something to be 'Constitutional' doesn't make it so." Well actually, Rand, it does. Any Senator should know that.

      And there is much more to come.

  24. More from the hysterical nonsense department:

    Moments after today's Supreme Court announcement, CNBC flashed on the screen:

    STOCKS SELL OFF ON HEALTH CARE DECISION

    Fox News called it an ECONOMY KILLER!!!

    Really? At 10 AM, just before the announcement, the Dow Jones was down about 100 points for the day, apparently based on the fool's assumption that the court would strike down the law. By 10:40, after the announcement, it had plunged to minus 160.

    But by 3:40, 20 minutes before closing, it had recovered to minus 66. And at closing, it was down only 25, the best one-day recovery in five weeks.

    That sure was some disaster, wasn't it?
