Winston-Salem Journal LTE TU 06/19/12

Peace Prize recipient
In October 2009, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded its Peace Prize to "President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. The Committee has attached special importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.
"Obama has as President created a new climate in international politics. … Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts. The vision of a world free from nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations. … Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened."
Then there was the CBS New headline, "Marines to Lead Obama's Afghanistan Surge" on Dec. 1, 2009.
In June 2011, the New York Times reported, "President Obama rejected the views of top lawyers at the Pentagon and the Justice Department when he decided that he had the legal authority to continue American military participation in the air war in Libya without congressional authorization, according to officials familiar with internal administration deliberations."
On May 29 this year, the New York Times published this headline: "Secret 'Kill List' Proves a Test of Obama's Principles and Will." This included the targeting and killing of an American citizen.
Most recently (June 1), the New York Times published the story "Obama Order Sped Up Wave of Cyberattacks Against Iran." Those attacks being against Iran's nuclear facilities that are supposedly not intended for war.
I wonder what the odds are that Obama wins the Nobel Peace Prize in 2012.

Legitimate concerns
The Journal has raised legitimate concerns over the legislature's recent rush to approve hydro-fracking ("Fracking comes with many concerns," June 14). There are few voices of reason in this discussion.
My husband and I purchased his family farm in Stokes County to preserve it. Could eminent domain allow pipeline builders to invade this property in the name of job creation or alternative energy? We lived in Maryland for over 20 years and witnessed the horrors of hydro-fracking: contaminated water supply, flammable "water" pouring from water faucets, land decimated and abandoned when the scant supply of gas was removed.
Apparently the current climate in North Carolina is to remove all common sense from every legislative decision, to become the laughingstock of the world and to let business dictate the direction of our state. The failure of a bill to protect the coastline from development, and essentially hand the coast over to developers, is devastating; removal of scientists from key environmental and medical committees is shortsighted and absurd; and the rush to pass fracking demonstrates that the North Carolina legislature has abandoned the principals that we cherish in this state — carefully designed regulations to protect our environment for quality of life and tourism, open discussion of issues that impact more than their campaign coffers, and a balance between business and thoughtful planning for the next generation. I am ashamed of what this current legislature has done, and I hope municipalities like Stokes County will stand firm against them.

Is it worth it?
I read your June 3 article "Fracking dangers greater in N.C." I have to agree with the statement, "fracking here will likely entail greater risks to drinking water supplies and may require special measures not used in other states, according to environmental experts."
I can assure you that fracking will contaminate the water and the air we all will be breathing. I know this because I lived in southwestern Pennsylvania, where the farmlands are being destroyed, the water tastes terrible (you can taste the chemicals in it) and the air quality is unbearable at times.
Yes, there are jobs being created, but at what price? Is it worth it? I certainly do not want my grandchildren or me to have cancer from all of the drilling.
I would like to suggest that state Sen. Bob Rucho move to western Pennsylvania for a month and see for himself what it's really like to live and breathe fracking. I think he would have a very different opinion of legalizing fracking in North Carolina.

Well, here's Wes' once-a-month LTE he complained wasn't getting published. Problem is, he has less than two weeks before he gets to have another one published.

    1. That's just Wes making a public ass of himself...nothing new. It'd be nice if he apologized for calling the paper "The Winston Salem Urinal", but I'm not holding my breath on that one.

It's some of that personal responsibility righties love so well.

    2. Calling the WS Journal the 'urinal' is not that uncommon. It pretty much destroyed any credibility it once had years ago.

Now with its focus on liberal causes, it's even more of a joke.

  2. More jailhouse Zimmercode:

"“Because he can only take it from Peter Pan (Paypal) to mine.”

You don't need to be Alan Turing to figure that stuff out.

    1. More diversionary tactics by the liberal press.

Because the facts of the shooting incident did not turn out like the liberal press wanted, they have to start writing about a side story to make Zimmerman into a villain.

The liberal media constantly pounds the message home that Zimmerman was the so called 'aggressor'. Never mind that the police audio tape indicates that Martin started to 'chase' Zimmerman. What the press seldom mentions is that Zimmerman was doing a public service to his community by acting in a community watch capacity.

But whoa unto liberals...this incident involved a gun, and the shooting of an 'unarmed' black man, so let not this story go to waste. Even though it's obvious to most people that Zimmerman did act in self-defense after Martin started banging Zimmerman's head on the concrete.

    2. Let's not be too hard on the Zimmermans. After all, stupid people deserve each other. And we knew from the start that George was stupid:

      1. He had been warned more than once by the police to stop harrassing neighbors.
      2. He was carrying a gun...anyone whose job does not require it is prima facie stupid to do so.
      3. He disregarded the 911 operator's excellent advice to leave matters to the police.
      4. He killed a person.
      5. He aided and abetted perjury and got his wife arrested.
      6. His "secret code" was laughable.

He could and should be charged with conspiracy to commit perjury.

I originally thought that the state attorney charged him with 2nd degree, hoping to get manslaughter. He now has zero credibility, so she might get 2nd degree after all.

Whatever, we'll get two pieces of scum off the streets.

    3. Hundreds of guns are being sold everyday to ordinary citizens. Why? Because many people fear, and probably rightfully so, that if Obama is reelected he will try to limit their access to guns.

Also, the sale of guns have increased because of the change in concealed carry laws (CCW) across this country. Liberals like to tout the fact crime has gone down recently under Obama. Is it because of Obama's policies or because of CCW laws?

The liberal press better get used to these types of shootings, because the thugs and their thuggery will probably be on the receiving end of a few more bullets in the future.

    4. She'll be lucky to get involuntary manslaughter at this point. You can tell she's not the smartest prosecutor to pick up a law book. Of course, she wasn't chosen for her lawyering skills. She was chosen because the color of her skin.

    5. The crime rate has been falling steadily since 1970, long before CCW. CCW has had no effect.

    6. And in March, NBC was caught editing the audio of George Zimmerman's 911 call as he watched Trayvon Martin in the minutes before he fatally shot the Florida teen. On a tape edited and played on the “Today” show, Zimmerman was heard calling Martin “suspicious” and volunteering that he was “black.” But the full, unedited tape showed that Zimmerman only mentioned Martin’s race when asked by the dispatcher. The result made it sound like Zimmerman was racially profiling Martin. The network fired three people after getting widespread criticism.

If it doesn't come out quite right for the liberal media, they'll 'fix' it so it does.

  3. Gee, speak of stupid and look who shows up.

Buck boy's "side issue" is called perjury, an offense rarely prosecuted because it is usually quite difficult to prove. But in this case, the Zimmerman's created the evidence against them by talking on a phone that any semi-intelligent person would have known was monitored. The presumptive sentence in Florida is 5 years.

And of course, the 911 tape does not say anything about Martin chasing Zimmerman...just the reverse. Wonder if Buck boy just made that up or if it another of his "trivial mistakes."

    2. They might run into money laundering charges as well; they moved quite a bit of cash around. As far as master criminals go, George and Sheila seem to be a few hush puppies short of a BBQ platter.

    3. Zimmerman probably never had two nickles to rub together before this incident. Suddenly, he had thousands of dollars through donations? He just didn't know how to handle that amount of money.

Plus, he knew that the money wasn't really his. He knew all that money was going to his lawyer because of the liberal persecution he was about to receive for shooting a black man.

He then mails the foot of the victim to a conservative politician in Canada.

I guess gays don't like conservatives in Canada either?

  5. Good afternoon folks!
LTE 1: I'm not sure what the purpose of this LTE is other than for Wes to get his name in the paper. As commander-in-chief, the POTUS has the right to call for military action when it's deemed necessary. Winning the Nobel Peace Prize is not the ultimate aim of the office.
LTE 2 & 3: Considering that we are dealing with legislatures who think they can legislate how water levels should be measured and how fast they should rise, it is no surprise that they would be ok with rushing through fracking without any consideration for the consequences. They remind me of GWB who only wanted to hear from the "yes" men who totally agreed with his position. From dropping the penny sales tax at a time the state can least afford it to the divisive Amendment One, cutting education including Teacher's Fellowship and Governor's School, to now the proposed mental health changes and now fracking, our state is the laughingstock of the country as Ms. Jones states. Even the one correct thing they were going to do, compensating the sterilized, is in jeopardy because the Senate doesn't want to bring it to a vote. It's almost as if the state legislators are determined to make NC the armpit of the country.

    1. This is a target rich environment for a conservative. Somebody is always saying something boneheaded in here.

Dotnet, what Wes was trying to say is: That it's ironic that Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize, because he's killing or has killed a lot of people with those drones during his presidency.

I will agree on one thing though. I'm against fracking. In fact, I wish Obama wouldn't frack us anymore.
