Winston-Salem Journal LTE TU 06/12/12

Affected property
Well, here we go again. In a time of financial shortcomings, our fine elected officials in the Winston-Salem City Council have decided to spend more money on unnecessary projects, i.e., "Plan for greenways, bike lanes approved" (June 5). While some of our citizens may approve of the proposed greenways, I suspect that only a miniscule, vocal number of people support them. I would also dare venture that no one in the council chamber owns any property affected by this decision.
I believe that the money spent could be used for some purpose that would benefit a larger portion of the citizens of Forsyth County, i.e., potholes, etc. As a property owner along Muddy Creek since the early '70s who has toiled for many years to beautify my property only to have a sewer line run through it, thanks to the county and eminent domain, at the cost of many trees, now comes the greenway.
Well, I say "enough." I bought my acreage for privacy and solitude, not for a bunch of strangers wandering about at their leisure day or night. I find restoration of my well-being by watching the deer, turkeys, hawks and other wildlife that will disappear when the people start using this "must have" greenway.
Some may not like my stance on this issue, but I'm not walking through their yards; they want to walk through mine.

Intelligence 'leaks'
We're at war, a fact the current administration certainly knows. Yet continual "leaks" flow from somewhere in the administration to newspapers and TV.
Why are we publicizing intelligence-gathering methods, military and intelligence-operations methods, and general intelligence information about the amount of information that was gathered after the bin Laden raid; the latest "underwear bomber"; the apparent U.S. and Israel "cyber attacks" against Iran; etc., etc., etc.?
During World War II, would the administration have broadcast that the U.S. had the "enigma code machine" of the Germans, or that the U.S. had broken the Japanese code? Of course not — people would have been court-martialed and jailed, at the very least. But it seems that lately, as soon as some intelligence is obtained, there are "leaks" to the press.
Why is this happening? Doing so not only gives information to our "enemies" but places American troops and their allies in harm's way. It's time for the so-called "leaks," which appear to be intentional, to stop, and for people to be prosecuted for providing this intelligence information to the public and to our enemies.

Bringing up controversy
Having had three daughters attend North Forsyth High School I have had the pleasure of working with a lot of different teachers over the years, both as a parent and as a volunteer. I was ecstatic to see that Mike Muse was named the new head boys basketball coach of East Forsyth ("New coach for East Forsyth," June 7).
However, any other time this would have been buried on page 6 of the sports section, in no more than two paragraphs, instead of on the front page. You chose to once again use the opportunity to bring up controversy from earlier this year and rehash the whole subject again instead of concentrating on the facts of what your headline stated.
Mike Muse is a talented coach who we need to be coaching our youth, but when given the opportunity, the Journal decides to concentrate on the negative. As stated in your article, Coach Muse made a mistake and has been punished and it is time to move on.
The next time a member of the Journal staff is promoted to a leadership position, will you also report any disciplinary actions that may be in that person's history? If the Journal still has a problem with Coach Muse's promotion, maybe the editorial page would have been the correct place to bring up the past events, not the front page. Of course, very few people would have seen it there and it would not be as sensational as the front page.

  2. Mr. Hall:

Thanks for writing in. Your letter is the first refreshing and truly enlightening letter I've read in a while. Usually, the same old liberals write the same old tired liberal rhetoric, day after day.

Eminent domain was a bad decision by the Supreme Court. And now, people in positions of power in city, county, state, and federal governments are abusing that power to 'steal' land from lawful land owners. These government officials also steal land through annexation.

It's time that property owners regain their rights, and have a say in these decisions. Thanks to Republicans in the N.C. General Assembly, a new, and more respectful, annexation law has been enacted. If you want to be raped without a kiss, vote for Democrats. That's all I can say.

Let's all hope Obama is voted out in November. That would be a good start to restoring America to where it once was.

  3. Boy, after the first day of the trial of the homosexual pedophile, Jerry Sandusky, I don't think I want to hear anymore.

One thing I noticed is that all of these homosexual attacks on young boys seemed to have occurred around bathrooms and showers. That information supports my belief that we need more laws to protect people from homosexual predators in those areas.

After day one, I'm not looking forward to day two's testimony.

      ________

That obviously has to be stopped due to recent reversals in policy in the U.S. Military on homosexuals, and other changes. No government or legal entity should be in the position of an enabler for these sexual predators.

  4. LTE #1 – Sounds like the man who builds a house at the coast and then screams about people walking on the beach.

Mr. Hall does not own Muddy Creek, nor does he own the land immediately adjacent. Under NC law, the state holds the creekbed itself in trust for the citizens of the state. But the state also owns right of way up to the high water mark. Since Muddy Creek has frequently flooded, that means that the state owns the entire creek embankment.

And for a man who waxes poetic about the wildlife, Mr. Hall seems to know very little about it. A few people walking along a greenway is not going to have any effect on the wildlife.

We have all manner of wildlife right in the heart of downtown, including two nesting pairs of hawks and falcons living on the ledges of the Reynold building. I frequently see coyotes along the railroad tracks near my loft.

LTE #2 – My, my, a bit hysterical. Let’s see what we’re talking about here:

Leak #1 – The President controls drone strikes. We already knew that.
Leak #2 – The US developed the Stuxnet worm. We already knew that.
Leak #3 – The Bin Laden raid…is over, so what’s the big deal. Information found at Bin laden’s villa has been used to find other Al Qaeda leaders.
Leak #4 – The underwear bomber was caught…the next on will probably be as well.

    Mountains out of molehills.

LTE #3 – Any teacher who abuses a student should be fired…that includes Mike Muse.

This is Mr. Leggett’s second letter defending Muse…maybe they’re blow buddies.

    1. The property rights around streams, rivers etc. are little more complicated than you have portrayed them.

And this coming from a man that lives in a downtown building. I'm sure a deer would enjoy lounging on the sidewalk too? Geeez. Obama is not the only liberal that's out of touch.

  6. Good afternoon folks!
LTE 1: Perhaps Mr. Hall should learn how easements work as well as non-profit budgeting. Anyway, if Mr. Hall would have actually read the article, it states the plan is just a guide for the commissioners to follow if and when they decide to approve new greenway construction. Plan
The article clearly states the plan "adds no new greenways and allocates no additional funding."
LTE 2: "We're at war" - that's a bit nebulous. To compare the actions against al-Qaida vs. WWII is rather inane. Leaking of classified materials is illegal, so the identifying the source of those leaks should be a priority.
LTE 3: More Monday-morning editoring. Amazing how many think they can do a better job as editor-in-chief of the Journal. I will grant that the situation with Coach Muse has been handled, and it is time to move on.
Normally, I don't find Wes's LTE posts worth replying to, but I couldn't resist responding to his remarks yesterday about education not being a govt job and evolution being "just a theory". This is one of those times I really wish I had the access to FB to respond in real time rather than 12 hours later.

    1. The very phrase "just a theory" is all that is required to know that the person using it is totally ignorant of science.

Wes is absolutely right about education. Same goes for roads and bridges. Next time he wants to go somewhere, he can build the road as he goes.

  9. As always, Buck boy's reading/listening comprehension grade is "F".

The drop in average net worth he refers to did not happen in the last three years. And it has nothing to do with any stimulus.

The period covered is 2007-2010, 4 years. The data is almost 18 months old. And over 75% of the loss was from collapsed housing values, the result of the Bush economic crash.

Just another "trivial" mistake by the king of misinformation, not to mention simple stupidity.

  10. "Obama support in N.C. tumbling. Gay marriage support by Obama blamed."

Hard to tell if this is yet another "trivial" mistake or just an outright lie. Either way, it's classic Buck boy wishful thinking.

In the four polls done in NC since Obama's announcement re gay marriage, his numbers have actually improved by about 1.5%.

And one of the polls was conducted by the always right leaning Rasmussen, while another comes from the hard right Civitas.

Of course, maybe Buck boy took this poll himself, perhaps in one of the public restrooms that he hangs out in.

  11. Romney's gained 7 points on Obama in North Carolina since April, when the President led by a 49-44 margin. Since then Romney's erased what was a 51-38 lead for Obama with independents and taken a 42-41 lead with that voting group. He's also increased his share of the Democratic vote from 15% to 20%, suggesting he's convincing some more conservative voters within the party to cross over.
