Winston-Salem Journal LTE TU 06/26/12

Blight
I am writing about the sterilization program, which was terrible. The poor victims should be paid soon.
If it were not for the work of editorial-page editor John Railey (whose writing is one of the first things I rush to read), and state Rep. Larry Womble (who could not help that accident), I wouldn't have learned about this blight on our state.
I was so proud of my cousin, Gov. Dan K. Moore, and his work to end segregation, but disappointed that he hadn't acted on this atrocity.

The power of art
Congratulations to the Winston-Salem Journal and the Delta Arts Center for the exhibition featuring Christine Kirouac's photographs of the Journal's hawkers. But mere congratulations aren't enough for Kirouac and her subjects. We are all in their debt for such a remarkable demonstration of the power of art.
Guy Davenport once wrote, "When attention replaces indifference, art happens." Christine Kirouac has paid attention to men on the streets who most often are met with indifference. Her portraits show us how much we lose when we don't pay attention.
And thanks for the print in the June 24 paper. I hope all your readers treasure it.

An adherence to principles
The Boy Scouts of America will flourish because of an adherence to principles. If guest columnist Rosemary Haskell ("The BSA and the rule that dare not speak its name," June 19) and others had their way, the Boy Scout Oath would read:
On my honor, I will do my best
To do my duty to my country
and to obey the Scout Law;
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong
and mentally awake.
The oath actually reads:
On my honor, I will do my best
To do my duty to God and my country
and to obey the Scout Law;
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong,
mentally awake and morally straight.
The subtle use of words or omission of same can be a powerful thing. I know Haskell said nothing about God, but once any group begins to compromise its core beliefs in the interest of political correctness for one issue, it becomes easier to compromise on other issues.
The Boy Scouts were formed over 100 years ago with the same oath. Everyone must decide for themselves what "morally straight" means to them. The Boy Scouts, historically, has taken the stand that homosexuality is immoral and therefore cannot be "morally straight." This stand is well known and not "the rule that dare not speak its name." When homosexuality becomes moral then there will be no conflict.

Radically liberal
Conservatives insist that President Obama is not only liberal but radically liberal — despite his middle-of-the-road, borrowed-from-the-Republicans policies. But sure, OK, whatever you say; the president is liberal.
Why, then, when he endorses same-sex marriage and allowing the children of illegal immigrants to stay in the country do conservatives complain that these are political ploys — rather than the genuine expression of his liberal philosophies?
They complain when he acts like a conservative, and they complain when he acts like a liberal. It's true: Whatever the man does, conservatives are going to find something wrong with it. You have to wonder why.
As one pundit put it, I sure would like for President Obama to talk about what a bad idea it is to eat yellow snow, just so I could hear some conservatives extol its virtues.

  1. Mr. Turner:

    I'll keep this simple for you. A simpleton needs things to be simple, right? (I always try to start off on a positive note, unlike Rush, our infamous 'Troll'.

    President Obama did a very brave and wonderful thing in ordering the killing of Osama Bin Laden. I commend him for his action as most conservtives do.

    His inaction on illegal immigration, for example, overrides (in a sense) the killing of the terrorist in a foreign land because of the huge negative economic impact on our overall economy.

    Get it? Probably not, since you're a boneheaded liberal. But I 'tried' to explain it to you.

    Good morning to all!

  2. There was nothing particularly brave about the President's decision to take out Osama, nor is there anything wonderful about killing any human being.

    The bravery accolades should be reserved for the SEALs and others who carried out the mission, and even there it was not a big deal...the guys were just doing their job, a job that they are trained for and that they love doing.

    People who natter on and on about the negative economic impact of illegal aliens are just likethe fools who say "It's only a theory..." in scientific matters...they reveal their abject ignorance of the subject.

    If you want to see something really negative, you need look no farther than some bigoted white bread dunce who spends his days sitting on his ass watching Fox while surfing the sewers of the internet.

  4. The Obama Administration opened a 'hotline' so that illegals can call in to report law enforcement for racial profiling in Arizona, but law enforcement officials can't call in to get the immigration status of a particular individual.

    LTE1: It looked like the legislature was actually going to provide some form of minimal compensation this session. However, the state senate decided against funding the program. If not now, then when. I suppose the answer is never. It appears the victims of forced sterilization will have to be satisfied with only an apology from the State.

    LTE2: Thanks Ms. Kirouac for highlighting the efforts of the Journal’s hawkers. May they have more and better fodder to hawk with the completion of the sale of the Journal to World Media Enterprises Inc., a Berkshire Hathaway Company. Otherwise, we may have no source for our discussions or lack there of, and nothing to feed the Troll.

    LTE3: Principles evolve over time just as the abolitionist movement, women’s suffrage and civil rights movement changed how we now treat African Americans and women. Tomorrow’s scout leaders will demand a moral organization which is inclusive of all of God’s children.

    Not really hearing a lot on the other side about the immigration policy pertaining to children or that most of SB1070 (especially the part about it not being illegal to look for work) was overturned by SCOTUS. Could it be that Republicans are for illegal immigration because it is a source of cheap labor? This decision like the vast majority of the decisions of the Robert’s Court is very probusiness with regard to the availability of cheap, undocumented labor being able to remain in the country with less fear of harassment from local authorities. Additionally, employers do not have the use everify.

    "Bucky June 26, 2012 5:39 PM

    Zimmerman passed polygraph."

    Yet another "trivial mistake".

    Zimmerman did not take a polygraph exam. He took a Computer Voice Stress Analysis (CVSA) exam.

    Neither is admissible in court for a very good reason...on average, both attain about 50% accuracy, which is about the same as chance...in other words, we could guess at whether the subject is telling the truth, or flip a coin, and do just as well as either test. Ignorant people believe in "lie detectors" because they have fallen for the propaganda.

    In addition, if there actually was a "lie detector", a habitual liar, which the Big Z has shown himself to be, would easily be able to defeat it.

    1. My personal favorite: "He appeared out of nowhere!" That might fly in some churches, but I don't think it will in court.

    2. "He emerged from the darkness!" The crime scene photos show that the place wasn't lit up like a ballpark, but there was plenty of light and no darkness to "emerge from".

    3. "He jumped out of the bushes!" Really, George? Just where are those bushes now? Somebody (Trayvon's ghost?) trying to pin a murder rap on poor Killer must have cut them all down.
