Trading places
The writer of the Dec. 31 letter “Unsustainable” is quite agitated over “the fairness question,” regarding who should be responsible for paying down our national debt, which was caused by Republicans not paying for two wars and a major health-care initiative (in the eight years they held office after Bill Clinton left a huge surplus), not to mention corrupt bankers who, with all those nasty regulations obliterated by Republican rule, gambled with the world’s money and brought about this fiscal calamity.
In the writer’s view, however, our debt burden is largely the responsibility of the poor and the middle classes and they need to shoulder way more of the costs by having their “entitlements” cut.
In his words, “The real fairness question is, why should 47 percent pay no federal tax and the top 1 percent pay 40 percent of taxes?” The fact is that those in the lowest income level, average $18,400 per year in 2007, still pay around 4 percent of their income in federal taxes to fund the entitlements they receive.
However, I have an idea that should fix even the perception of gross unfairness. Let everyone in the top 1 percent trade places with those in the bottom 47 percent. I’m sure people who don’t make enough money to pay income taxes would be more than happy to become multimillionaires and the wealthy can have all the advantages that now accrue to the poor.

Making proper changes
In light of the horrific tragedy that occurred in Newton, Conn., there are three things that come to my mind. They are a change in mental-health care, access to violent video games and a change in gun control, specifically assault weapons.
The Second Amendment was written during the time of the Revolutionary War. The British did not allow their subjects to arm themselves against the King. The framers of the Constitution wanted to be sure that the citizens of their new country had no such restrictions and were able to form a militia (army).
Those who are opposed to gun laws have suggested that we all arm ourselves with weapons, whether they are handguns or assault weapons. Ironically, that did little to help Adam Lanza's mother.
We need to bring back attention of the mentally ill by improving attitudes toward mental illness; to improve services for the mentally ill; and to work for the prevention of mental illness and promote mental health.
Every parent needs to be aware of the video games that their children are watching and playing. Most video games try to make killing and gore a fun and exciting violent time. These fantasy scenarios can fuel violence.
Unfortunately, I'm afraid this will not be the last act of violence we will see or hear about. Consequently is the right to purchase and carry assault weapons more important than that of a human life?

Sum It Up
Are you confident that the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County schools board can find a good successor for Superintendent Don Martin?
Correspondent of the week: Looking back
Looking back at the past year I saw both bad and good things occurring. The patina of our past seems to have reached a breaking point, eroding our senses to accept extreme cruelty to other human beings. We have gradually allowed our country to become worn down from so much violence and gutter language allowed on television, computer twittering, Facebook, etc. I long for the days when we could turn on the TV and see something that made us feel good instead of crime shows with many shootings and shocking brutality.
Our younger generation has learned to accept this to be the norm because they never had the privilege of enjoying better entertainment. I long for the days when we could watch Carol Burnett, Bob Hope or Tim Conway, who made us laugh instead of cringe.
My generation was far from perfect. We allowed many bad things, such as segregation, unclean air, no regulations on polluting, and lack of care for the elderly. We have made a lot of progress on all these things which is something to be thankful for. So I can see the progress we have made as well as the detriment that has occurred.
I pray that we will look back and feel shame for the bad things we have allowed and continue the good things.

Meet your new governor:
ReplyDeleteState for Sale
RALEIGH, N.C. —Republican Pat McCrory is now North Carolina's governor after being sworn in during a low-key ceremony in the old state Capitol.

I would like to thank the majority of N.C. voters for electing now Governor Pat McCrory. That little 'chick' trip that 'ol Bev took us on for the last four years was none too fun for most sane people. But yo, there were those that said if only we had a woman, things would be different. And they were right, things were different-worse different in many ways. Let me count the ways-oh, never mind, they're too long to list.
But those days are water over a dam in a sense. The sad thing is: We need some of that water (money) back to get the state going again. 'Ol Bev was having too much fun spending other people's money to really think about the consequences.
But unlike California, we'll quickly recover because now we have conservative, sensible, rational, and logical leadership.
Woooooooooowooooooooooo! I'm gettin on the McCrory train. I think it's going to be a fun four year ride!

This one is so deliriously happy being a fool that even the late, great Selwyn Rose couldn't help him.
True. The first step is to admit you have a problem.
DeleteDr. Rose...I remember him. He and Lee had that big house near Old Town. It was a plane crash at Manassas that killed him. It was sad; doctors and private planes just don't mix.
Hatchman, I don't know what's happening with you? I had so much faith in your potential.
DeleteYour first, second, third mistakes are/were listening to Rush and Rielle Hunter. That's where you got off the beatin' path. Just so you know.
How's that book on Obama coming along? Hee Hee...I'll bet it'll be a doozie!
"...where you got off the beatin' [sic] path."
DeleteThe Roses were among the most interesting people who ever lived here.
Selwyn was best known as the "shrink that got Michael Hayes off", but as it turned out, he was right. Today Hayes is living a productive life thanks to Selwyn.
Selwyn was one of a handful of people who spoke up for Curtis Dixon in the disgraceful affair which led to Dixon's suing the city and the resignations of city manager Orville Powell and deputy city manager John Bond.
When Donna Edmonson of Greensboro was chosen to be the December, 1986 Playboy playmate, a number of Triad homeowners turned down the opportunity to host the shoot. The Roses created a local scandal by accepting. They gave the $1200 fee to the Winston-Salem symphony orchestra.
Leigh said that during the shoot, the gardener came in and said "Mrs. Rose, did you know that there is a nude woman in front of your garage?"
They had a fabulous home, but they were also into outdoorsy stuff. Smart, active and fun to be around.
That sounds like her; she was a character. I went to school with one of their daughters, Candice.
DeleteI'll start you off Hatchman....Once upon a time in the land of Lincoln, a young African-Indonesian-American appeared. He was so unlike other children of his age, not because he wore a Islamic kufi, but because of his unique smile.
DeleteNow you take it from there Hatchman. I'll help you out again when you get to the end of the book.
Well, maybe it was another Tim Britton who registered FCSOwatch. Or another paranoid gun nut who also makes knives and advertises self-defense on the side. I must say, it takes initiative to build a hate-site directed against one county level functionary. It's fucking insane, but it take initiative.
DeleteIt doesn't matter, anyway. You're one of the last "anonymous" lowlifes from JournalNow who still does this for whatever reason. Bless your heart.
Thanks Hatchman. I hope you're doing well too.
DeleteI've tried to steer you and Bob in the 'right' direction, but neither of you will get on the 'sendero luminoso.' Por que?
I guess Rielle does have a negative, powerful influence over men. Hee Hee....
Speaking of hate......liberals are doing a pretty good job hating on religious folks, firearm enthusiasts, conservatives, in short, just basically anyone that disagrees with them. Don't you think Hatchman?

(CNN) -- If you're planning to donate sperm in Kansas, you may want to do it through a doctor.
ReplyDeleteThat's one message from the case of William Marotta of Topeka. In 2009, he noticed a Craig's List advertisement from a lesbian couple, also in Topeka, seeking donated sperm.
"Intrigued" by the ad, he agreed to donate and says he delivered three cupfuls of his sperm -- gratis -- to the women, one of whom gave birth to a daughter.
"I donated genetic material, and that was it for me," he told CNN affiliate WIBW.
Or so he thought. That changed when the parents separated and one of the women stopped working because of illness and applied to the state for help, he said. The state contacted Marotta for child support.

Another Democrat doing something stupid.
Three cupfuls?.....Jesus! He obviously doesn't know anything about baking 'cakes'.
DeleteGood gosh! What a day! Kansas sperm donor hands over 3 cups?! That was truly a donation with enthusiasm. Who says a guy can't "catch up" in a few minutes?
ReplyDeleteBack to football.
WW, I missed that one. 3 cups!!!!
