Winston-Salem Journal LTE TH 01/10/13

First impression
My first impression of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school-board candidate David Regnery, after reading about him in the Journal (“ GOP taps Regnery for school board,” Dec. 19, “Nominee supports right to bear arms,” Dec. 23), was that while his politics weren’t mine, and he was more comfortable with guns than I might prefer, he was still, all in all, a pretty reasonable candidate who would likely be open-minded and fair and do a good job.
But after reading about his likely attempt to circumvent the law in regard to firearms and his obfuscation on his place of residence (“Regnery out as school board candidate,” Jan. 3), I’m glad that he’s withdrawn from the race. We don’t need people like that working with our schools. I can’t help feel like we’ve – pun intended – dodged a bullet.

Hope and prayer
How embarrassing to see Mount Airy Mayor Deborah Cochran posing on one knee with hands pressed together in supplication before the Henredon sign on the cover of the Jan. 6 Journal (“ ‘Hope has power, and so does prayer’ ”). The story focuses on hope and prayer for jobs, but the photo evokes an image of town leaders begging a corporation to return.
Has prayer become the economic development tool for Mount Airy?

‘Tyranny’
Everyone needs to get some facts straight: Those petitioning for secession or stockpiling weapons to fight government “tyranny” are committing acts of sedition. They aren’t patriots defending some “right”; they are criminals and should be treated accordingly.
Anyone past the 2-year-old spoiled-brat stage knows it’s not “tyranny” when they don’t get their way. They have the right to stamp their feet and bawl all they want, nothing more. If their principles are such that the United States is no longer hospitable, then they can do the honorable thing and leave. There are plenty of options available; it’s just that severing from the country into their own private Idaho isn’t one of them.
True patriots don’t want them here and don’t want to be dragged along into New Bumpkinstan so their choice is for them alone. If they choose to stay they have two options: shut up or go to prison.
There is no constitutional right to commit treason and it’s high time real Americans stopped tolerating those who think there is.

Winston Salem
Newtown, Conn.
Newtown, Conn., not Newtown, Pa., not Newton, Mass., but Newtown, Conn., between Danbury and Bridgeport. A town of 2,000 people founded in the 1700s. From the house on Head o'Meadow Road that I grew up in, got married in, buried my dad and 20 years later my mom in, it is two miles to the center, known as The Flagpole.
From there, Church Hill Road sloped down past the notorious Red Rooster Cafe where families never went, St. Rose's Church next on the right, then a mile down, dead-ending at Sandy Hook on the Pootatuck River. Nearby is Sandy Hook Elementary, the school my three young relatives attended. At age 11 and older I often walked to town, across two brooks onto Sugar Street, along to Main Street, turn left up the hill to the Cyrenius H. Booth Library, my goal. After an hour or so reading books, I'd go up to The Flagpole Fountain Lunch, buy gumdrops, and return home.
Now, many years later, Newtown is on the map and I am proud of its heroism, its bravery, and its kindness. In the presence of stunning tragedy, Newtown has become memorable for the finest of human qualities: Stalwart strength, endurance, and compassion,
Do I have a wish? Yes, I have two. First, that we no longer keep murderous assault weapons in American homes. And second, that consolation and kindness might ease the sorrows that can never be forgotten. I am proud of my home town.

Finish the Thought
Saturday, we asked readers to complete the sentence : “In its search for a new police chief, the Winston-Salem City Council should … “
“… ask candidates how police department policy could reduce the number of pedestrian injuries and deaths in our city.
“Does the candidate recognize the health and environmental benefits of a city where walking is convenient and safe? And does the candidate care about children, seniors and others who must walk, those who should walk and those who just like to walk?“

Oh my...I just saw a black helicopter fly over downtown. It was headed toward Ardmore, so all you patriotic minutemen over there get your guns and get on your roofs and start blazing away.

    2. Oops...false alarm.

That black helicopter just flew over again and this time I could make out gold lettering on the side that said "Aircare".

So you patriots out in Ardmore can stand down for the moment. We are ever vigilant downtown, with guards on the roofs every night. One night recently our downtown feral black cat slipped into an alley as cats will and set of a motion sensor alarm.

18,000 rounds of fifty cal machine gun ammo was expended in under a minute. Apparently, there were no casualties, other than the Downtown Minutemen's ammo budget, but one round did damage a plastic bag owned by a homeless person who was taking a nap down by the railroad tracks.

When the smoke had cleared, the cat was standing on my fire escape, looking at me and shaking his head sadly.

I'm not much of a Wendy's fan. But I hope nothing happens to Chick-fil-A. I love their sandwiches, and the owner's stand on traditional marriage is the best.

Throw in a safe environment in which to use the bathroom, and Chick-fil-A gets my vote for the best fast food restaurant.

    1. That’s funny, because I was just at Chick-fil-A yesterday. Business was terrible, not a soul in the store. I asked the manager who told me that he had not sold a single sandwich since sometime in September.
I decided to wash my hands before tackling a four month old sandwich.

Man, you should have seen what was going on in the restroom. There were two straight guys in the stalls doing #2 and four gay bucks standing on ladders leering down at the dodoers. Well, I wasn’t about to have my naked hands leered at while I was washing them, so I went over to Wendy’s.

What a difference. As I entered the restroom, I was met by a heavily armed guard in full body armor. He said “Come in sir.” But when the guy behind me tried to enter, the guard said “No, you look gay, so you can’t come in here.” Now that’s my kind of place.

I have just sent the President an e-mail pointing out that leering in public restrooms is a far more important problem than gun violence and suggesting that a federal law be passed at once requiring all fast food restaurants to post armed homophobes in all male restrooms. That might put a little strain on the budget, so the women will have to fend for themselves for a while.

Meanwhile, I will be hanging "out" at Wendy's every day.

  4. LTE #1 – At the meeting last Thursday, Walter Marshall made a very reasonable suggestion, that the Commissioners wait a week or so to check out the qualifications of the other candidates for the school board. Bill Whiteheart said that they had already been checked out by the local republican committee, so there was no need. Of course, they had already checked out Regnery as well and knew nothing at all about him except that he, like Mark Baker, who they had just seated to replace Debra Conrad, was a far right nut, who would slavishly follow the Tea Party agenda no matter what. That is the only qualification that the local Republicans care about.

That evolved into a shouting match because Whiteheart is one of those gun toting sissies who likes to bully people, but only when armed, while Marshall is over 70 years old, so a good target for a bully. Deputies were seen edging in their direction just in case things got out of hand.

The Republicans then rammed through another school board appointment, this time selecting Irene May, an inoffensive looking woman who has seen the black helicopters circling overhead, discharging UN troops dressed in WSPD uniforms…she pretty much believes all of the same internet conspiracy scenarios that Tiny is into and has probably spent a good bit of time with aliens from outer space. She is so stupid that her minder, school board member Jeannie Metcalf, had to come to the meeting and sit next to her to make sure she didn’t start blurting out her loony nonsense.

So now we have a person on the board of education who consorts with aliens…let’s hope that they have some good ideas on curriculum development or something.

We didn’t dodge a bullet…we just ate a different one.

LTE #2 – That picture was picked up and ran in newspapers all over the country, so now everyone is laughing at not just Mt. Airy, but King (the stupid flag thing has gotten international coverage), Winston-Salem (the County Commissioners prayer lawsuit also received international coverage) and the rest of the northern Piedmont as the last refuge of superstition and the Dark Ages.

LTE #3 – I don’t think that it has quite reached the level of sedition yet…the secession stuff is just stupid talk. If it ever does, the bigmouths will get a quick dose of military shock and awe and will quickly crawl back into their holes.

I like the New Bumpkinstan name. I think I’ll have an artist friend design a flag and raise it over my machine gun bunker on the roof of my building downtown.

LTE #4 – “Newtown is on the map”? I don’t think pride is exactly the right word here.

  5. NRA board member threatened lawsuit over Arizona gun buyback
    BY JILLIAN RAYFIELD
    Salon

To mark the second anniversary of the Tucson shootings, police in Arizona held a gun buyback and acquired 206 guns that it planned to destroy. But one NRA board member threatened to sue over the event because, ”We do believe that it is illegal for them to destroy those guns.”

NPR reports that Todd Rathner, a lobbyist in the state and a member of the national board of the NRA, argued that destroying the guns violated Arizona law, and he is now considering a lawsuit against the city. ”If property has been abandoned to the police, then they are required by ARS 12-945 to sell it to a federally licensed firearms dealer, and that’s exactly what they should do,” he said.

NPR also reported that the “Tucson city attorney calls that a misreading of the law.”

Tucson City Councilman Steve Kozachik, a Republican , said he’d been getting threats over the event. ”I’ve been getting emails. I’ve been getting phone calls in the office trying to shut this thing down or ‘We’re going to sue you’ or ‘Who do you think you are?’”

  7. Regnery: I believe in gun ownership. I believe there are kooks. Gun ownership and kooks should be mutually exclusive. I also believe in school boards. School boards and kooks should be mutually exclusive. Ergo, Regnery needs neither to own weapons of mass destruction nor to be a school board member.

  8. Stockpiling weapons against tyranny is not sedition nor is it treason, assuming the stockpiler is not conspiring to employ them against our current governments. Stockpiling against future tyranny, however improbable, is legal, if almost 100% likely a waste of space and money. But, if at some time in a no doubt distant future, the government became sufficiently corrupt, insolent, and oppressive, well, this country was founded after a revolt against an allegedly oppressive government.

This situation does not obtain at this time, even if some of us aren't happy with the current administration. Unhappiness with the current adminstration routinely affects approximately half of the participating electorate a good deal of the time.

There are also 3 separate but equal branches of govt available to prevent one branch from getting too big for its breeches. Perhaps in the far distant future, ordinary citizens will have access to some type of laser that could zap anything in sight which might put it on equal footing with the country's military, but I feel I must remain highly skeptical of a successful military revolt within the US by its citizens unless the citizens have a large portion of the military on its side.

    7. Re overthrowing the US government: in the far distant future the government might be sufficiently corrupt, insolent, and oppressive to warrant overthrow, as I stated. Its military might be corrupt and strife-riven as well. I do not predict that. I predict elections every 2 years for generations to come. As OT mentioned in an earlier analysis, we are not balkanized and tribalized like some of the Arab nations going thru upheaval. But, the right remains, just as it did in 1776, regardless of feasibility or probability.

And populations shift over the decades and centuries. But, it remains a thought exercise, and will be so long after we're gone and long after the firearms of today are scrapped or curios.

    8. The biggest threat, as in most countries, would be a military coup. We've had some interesting books and movies on the subject, and at least one real life event:

Then in October (1973), came the rumor that Nixon may be considering a military coup to stay in office. Gen. Alexander Haig told the Congress during his confirmation hearings for the position of Secretary of State on January, 1981, that some people in Washington were "flirting with solutions which would have been extra-Constitutional".

Watergate Special Prosecutor Leon Jaworski warned the grand jury that if they decided to indict Nixon he might use force to remain in office. In June, 1982, Harold Evans, Watergate grand juror, appearing on a segment of the ABC-TV news show "20/20." said that Jaworski told them that if they indicted Nixon he might "surround the White House with armed forces."

On October 26, 1973, in a Washington Star article called "Has President Nixon Gone Crazy?" syndicated columnist Carl Rowan wrote: "...in the face of a vote to impeach he might try, as 'commander-in-chief' to use military forces to keep himself in power." In another article called "The Pardon," in the August, 1983 edition of the Atlantic Monthly, Seymour Hersh, one of Nixon's Joint Chiefs of Staff, wrote that in a December 22, 1973 meeting:

    9. (part 2)

"He kept on referring to the fact that he may be the last hope, (that) the Eastern elite was out to get him. He kept saying, 'This is our last and best hope. The last chance to resist the fascists'. His words brought me straight up out of my chair. I felt the President, without the words having been said, was trying to sound us out to see if we would support him in some extra-constitutional action ...

(Secretary of Defense James) Schlesinger began to investigate what forces could be assembled at his order as a counterweight to the Marines, if Nixon -- in a crisis -- chose to subvert the Constitution. The notion that Nixon could at any time resort to extraordinary steps to preserve his presidency was far more widespread in the government than the public perceived..."

He felt it would be led by General Robert Cushman, the Marine Representative on the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who had been loyal to Nixon ever since he had been his military aide while he was the Vice President under Eisenhower. Schlesinger, in July, 1974, believing the Washington contingent of Marines to be the probable force used in a coup attempt began developing a strategy to bring in the Army's 82nd Airborne Division from Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

On August 2, 1974, Secretary of State Henry Kissinger admitted that General Haig had informed him that Nixon was considering the idea of surrounding the White House with troops. In an August 27, 1974 article in the Washington Post titled "Military Coup Fears Denied," the fact was revealed that:

"Defense Secretary James Schlesinger requested a tight watch in the military chain of command to ensure that no extraordinary orders went out from the White House during the period of uncertainty (and) that no commanders of any forces should carry out orders which came from the White House, or elsewhere, outside the normal military channels."

Tantamount to a military coup, and contrary to the Constitution, the Joint Chiefs of Staff sent a secret communique to all Commanders of the U.S. military forces around the world: "Upon receipt of this message you will no longer carry out any orders from the White House. Acknowledge receipt."

Rather than a plot by the Illuminati to militarily take over the government, it seemed to be more of an attempt by Nixon to keep from getting pushed out of office by the powers that actually run this country. In the end, he knew what kind of power he was dealing with and resigned his office on August 9th rather than risk what remaining credibility he had by trying to grab what he could not hold.

I might add that General Cushman's son was one of my college roommates.

  10. Good afternoon folks!
LTE 1: IIRC, that column also quoted Regnery as saying he was "confident" he could have saved lives by taking out the shooter in Newtown had he been present although the shooter was wearing full body armor, fully armed, and would have the advantage of surprise. He also strongly advocated carrying guns into parks to protect against all the crime that wasn't taking place there. Yes, we dodged this bullet, but the Forsyth CC R's had a machine gun at the helm (carrying the gun theme through :) ), so we got stuck with an ideological nut case anyway. Instead of listening to Marshall and Plyler and making sure they chose the best candidate, they simply decided to select the next ideologue on the list with the same amount of thought that was put into selecting the socks to wear that day.

LTE 2: That picture did strike me as one of those sterotypically staged photo ops designed to make the subject look like he/she was on top of things when in fact nothing could be further from the truth.

LTE 3: "...they are criminals and should be treated accordingly." - I see them more as paranoid loons who should be treated professionally by a psychiatrist rather than sent to prison. Stocking all those weapons and ammo is only increasing the odds of themselves getting shot from within the household instead of protecting against the imagined govt threat. Kudos on "New Bumpkinstan"!

LTE 4: Newtown, CT actually seems like a really nice place. Ms. Listokin's first dream will most likely not come true, but there is always hope for the second to come true.

Finish the thought: show far more consideration and deliberation in the selection process than did the CC's in their selection of the school board replacement. People's lives will be affected by the choices made. The citizens deserve far better treatment than to have officials selected by essentially drawing a name out of a hat of ideologues.

The concept of striking a trillion dollar coin, which would generate very close to one trillion in seigniorage to be transferred to the Treasury, is based on the authority granted by Section 5112 of Title 31 of the United States Code (31 U.S.C. Section 5112) for the Treasury Department to "mint and issue platinum bullion coins" in any denominations the Secretary of the Treasury may choose. Thus, if the Treasury were to mint one trillion dollar coins, it could deposit such coins at the Federal Reserve's Treasury account instead of issuing new debt. The coins would not be released into regular circulation.

Fairfax, Va. - The National Rifle Association of America is made up of over 4 million moms and dads, daughters and sons, who are involved in the national conversation about how to prevent a tragedy like Newtown from ever happening again. We attended today's White House meeting to discuss how to keep our children safe and were prepared to have a meaningful conversation about school safety, mental health issues, the marketing of violence to our kids and the collapse of federal prosecutions of violent criminals.

We were disappointed with how little this meeting had to do with keeping our children safe and how much it had to do with an agenda to attack the Second Amendment. While claiming that no policy proposals would be "prejudged," this Task Force spent most of its time on proposed restrictions on lawful firearms owners - honest, taxpaying, hardworking Americans. It is unfortunate that this Administration continues to insist on pushing failed solutions to our nation's most pressing problems. We will not allow law-abiding gun owners to be blamed for the acts of criminals and madmen. Instead, we will now take our commitment and meaningful contributions to members of congress of both parties whoare interested in having an honest conversation about what works - and what does not.
