More AP courses
The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Board of Education recently turned down a grant to expand Advanced Placement programs at four county high schools (“School officials decline AP grant,” Jan. 23). The stated reason for declining the funds was to prevent new AP classes at home schools from adversely impacting enrollment in those courses at the career center.
According to Patrick Olsen, the principal at Reynolds High School, offering more AP courses there would increase overall AP enrollment, and it is reasonable to assume the other schools would reap the same benefit. But making AP classes more easily accessible to more students is apparently not a significant gain to the school board if the career center loses students. It appears justifying the existence of an expensive white elephant is more important than actually improving educational opportunities. After all, if the brand new career center became an underutilized waste of money, it could raise embarrassing comparisons to Atkins High School, less than three miles away.
A rational person might ask why increasing AP course offerings while saving the taxpayers money is a bad idea, or why the half-empty Atkins couldn't have been modified to fill the role of the career center. A skeptic might conclude that the school board is more concerned with building new classrooms, and the hundreds of millions of dollars that went to that purpose in the past decade, than with what goes on inside them.

Common-sense options
The writer of the Jan 9 letter “Countering mistrust,” a self-described informed progressive, wanted to share some “life saving-facts.”
He wrote, “No one can do anything to, much less kill, a child that does not exist.”
Unborn babies are not non-existent. That defies logic. If they didn't exist there would be nothing to abort. Ask a woman who is pregnant if the child does not already exist.
He then goes on to speak of women dying because of “few if any” options but illegal abortion.
There are many inexpensive, common-sense birth-control options available, plus the option of carrying the child to term and giving it up for adoption.
The writer closed with the advice that abortion was preferable to condemning “unwanted children to poverty.” Really? Can he see into the future? There is a long list of successful people who escaped being killed in the womb and were give a chance to live, among them: President Gerald Ford, Jesse Jackson, Sen. Robert Byrd, George Washington Carver, and last but not least, Steve Jobs of Apple computer fame, to name a few.
As Ronald Reagan once said, "I notice all of the people who support abortion are already born."
By the way, his wife, Nancy, was adopted also.

The right choice
The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Board of Education’s curriculum committee definitely made the right choice in deciding to turn down the AP STEM Access Program offered to schools in this county (“School officials decline AP grant,” Jan. 23). The program gives schools a chance to offer more science and math courses, while seeming to encourage minorities and females to sign up for these classes; a quest that is quite honorable in my opinion.
However, since our county has a Career Center that offers a plethora of Advanced Placement science and math classes, accepting the grant would not only be a waste of resources in our county, but would also hurt the Career Center by removing potential students, thus reducing the amount of math and science classes available. So as a student who takes AP classes at both my home school and a science class at the Career Center, I definitely believe that the Career Center should be protected at all costs.
Why, you may ask? Well, at the Career Center each individual has a plethora of classes to choose from. Students at the Career Center are not only able to take classes like AP Biology, but also take classes like AP Music Theory, and AP German. As a result, accepting the grant would be a huge loss to everybody at the Career Center.
Therefore, I am quite pleased that the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Board of Education has denied the AP STEM Program. It was a job well done.

Women In combat
Sen. Kay Hagan on Facebook announced her support of the decision to allow women in combat units. She says women will be afforded more opportunities for the same career advancement as their male counterparts.
But Hagan knows squat about combat. There is no grand heroic music played. The survivors don't march bravely off screen with flags waving. It is ugly, terrible, disgusting stuff.
It has nothing to do with careers, it is not a job opportunity; it is just much fear, pain, death and destruction. Those that engage in it carry that experience with them to the grave. They also carry the memory of their lost comrades in arms and see over and over the horrible ways they died and were maimed. When you see combat veterans with tears in their eyes, the tears are not those of happiness.
I hope she will treat combat veterans with some respect and remember this: Serving one's country means sacrifice, sometimes including your very life and leaving your loved ones with a terrible loss.
She shouldn’t trivialize this with her shallow comments, as this isn't about politically correct concepts of gender equality. This is about the most sacred service a citizen can perform for the country and his fellow Americans.

Clarification
The $5 million grant declined by the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school board referred to in the Jan. 27 letter “An educational agenda” represented the national total of the grant. The grants for each of the four local schools would vary from $1,200 to $9,000, depending on the subject area of the new course.
Liberal Democrats are already talking openly about a total ban Bob. Which liberal democrats? Besides, they can talk all they want, it would take a constitutional amendment ratified by 38 states in order to do that. And if it should happen someday, then it would be the will of the people who voted FOR such an amendment to repeal the 2nd amendment. As much as I would like to see every weapon on earth rendered useless, I don't see repeal of the 2nd Amendment happening anytime soon.
ReplyDeleteRemember Ronald Reagan? In 1991 he wrote an op-ed for the NY Times supporting the Brady Bill. In 1994, as the vote on banning assault weapons neared, he wrote a letter with former Presidents Ford and Carter to the House of Representatives urging them to vote in favor of the ban.
Delete“We are writing to urge your support for a ban on the domestic manufacture of military-style assault weapons. This is a matter of vital importance to the public safety,” the letter said.
“While we recognize that assault weapon legislation will not stop all assault weapon crime, statistics prove that we can dry up the supply of these guns, making them less accessible to criminals. We urge you to listen to the American public and to the law enforcement community and support a ban on the further manufacture of these weapons,” the letter said concluding.
Without Reagan's influence, the 94 assault weapons ban may not have passed. Reagan apparently persuaded at least two Members of Congress to change their vote:
DeleteCongressman Scott Klug, a Republican from Wisconsin was an opponent of the assault weapon ban and the day before the vote stated his opposition to the ban. Klug only changed his voted after “a last minute plea from President Reagan” in the form of a handwritten note.
”Dear Scott: As a longtime gun owner and supporter of the right to bear arms, I, too, have carefully thought about this issue. I am convinced that the limitations imposed in this bill are absolutely necessary,” Reagan wrote Klug. “I know there is heavy pressure on you to go the other way, but I strongly urge you to join me in supporting this bill. It must be passed. Sincerely, Ronald Reagan.”
”I can think of no one who has been a stronger supporter of law and order and a stronger supporter of the Second Amendment,” Klug said in a statement regarding Reagan’s note announcing his support for the ban.
Another former Congressman, New Hampshire Democrat Dick Swett, also credited the former President with influencing his voting. Swett was unsure of how to vote on the ban, but made up his mind after direct lobbying from Reagan.
The bill ended up passing the House by two votes, 216-214.
It boggles the mind that people equate the possible ban on assault weapons with the repeal of the 2nd amendment, when in fact there has never been talk of a repeal.
DeleteHaven't you learned anything in this forum, RHNDLS? You should seldom use absolutes unless you are absolutely sure about something.
DeleteThere is talk of banning guns completely all over the internet, on the streets, in newspaper LTEs. Of course, the talk is mainly being done by liberals. But it's being done. Some have even mentioned a repeal of the second amendment.
We're not going to 'fooled' by liberals anymore. Oh let's just enact just this one law, and let's change this. It won't change the second amendment. Please! It's all part and parcel for liberals to eventually ban ALL guns.
Ronald Reagan was a good man, and an even better president. But he was wrong on assault weapons. They are inconsequential in the overall scheme of crime. If liberals wanted to have a true effect on crime, handguns should be their target, and I'm sure that's coming next.
DeleteIf you've ever been shot or shot at, you have a healthy fear of guns. In a perfect world, we would ban them all, but this is not a perfect world.
Let's use some common sense for change, and not let a bunch loony, rampaging, emotional liberal Democrats make unwarranted new laws. We've had enough of that already, and look where it's gotten us.
He was also wrong for allowing arms to be sold to Iran. We are the most f-uped nation on earth when it comes to a love for violence and fear. Bucky, you avoid the truth because a total ban on guns is not going to happen, at least not in our lifetime. Do you know nothing of the constitution and what it would take to have a total ban on guns?
DeleteThere is talk on the internet about a lot of stuff that just isn't going to happen, but in your world of fear, you believe anything.
Delete@SFB's 0832hrs: I realize that closed mindedness would have prevented others from seeing the implication in my comment that 'there has never been talk' by the U.S. governmentof a repeal. However, there has been talk byother SFB's.
DeleteThe problem with banning military-style semi-automatics can be summed in 2 words: "creeping incrementalism," which has been the tactic of the anti-gun people for years. Get the nose under the tent with some restrictions, wait a while and establish a new baseline, then cry for more restrictions. And the aspiration for many on that side indeed is severe restrictions, the Constitution be damned.
Deletethey were banned before and that didn't happen. The Constitution does not guarantee the right the bear arms without restrictions, only the right to bear arms.
DeleteAdd in the sleazy and devious nature of Democrats in general, Stab, and you've got a receipe for tyrannical oppression by our government by the allowing these new gun laws and gun restrictions.
Delete“Ninety-nine percent of the failures come from people who have the habit of making excuses.” George Washington
DeleteTyranny! Bob
Deleten. 1.1. arbitrary or unrestrained exercise of power; despotic abuse of authority.
Deletethis debate is neither arbitrary nor unrestrained.
“Why aren't we making any progress towards a crime-free society? We're not making progress because we are too damn busy making excuses.”
Delete“One definition of a coward is simply, someone who makes a lot of excuses. Most of us have enough excuses to last a lifetime. The sooner we let go of them and get on with living, the better off we are.”
DeletePeople don't want an oppressive government which leads to tyranny, Bob.
DeleteTell the Democrats to get off our backs.
oh ye of little faith
DeleteLTE #4 Women in Combat.... and are you saying women should not be allowed to perform the most sacred service a citizen can perform for the county and "his"? fellow Americans? This issue is not about Senator Hagan, it's about brave female soldiers, like Tammy Duckworth, who give it all for their country. I suppose while we're at it, you might want to include Canadian born Senator, Ted Cruz, who never served in the military but has the nerve to smear two highly decorated veterans. Cruz appeared in Washington, D.C., at a forum hosted by the National Review Institute, the non-profit arm of the conservative magazine. "We've got two pending nominations, John Kerry and Chuck Hagel. Both of whom are very prominently [pause] less than ardent fans of the U.S. military," Cruz said to chuckles from the crowd.
ReplyDeleteA quick refresher about the two men he claims somehow oppose the U.S. military. In 1966, secretary of state nominee John Kerry, while studying at Yale University, enlisted in the U.S. Navy. In 1968, at the peak of the conflict, he requested to serve in Vietnam. The U.S. government ultimately awarded Kerry three Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star, and a Silver Star for his service. Contra the despicable Swift Boat ads trotted out in the 2004 presidential campaign, Kerry is indisputably a war hero.
In 1967, Chuck Hagel, the secretary of defense nominee, was called before the draft board and volunteered to serve in the U.S. Army. Hagel saw combat in both Vietnam and Cambodia. Along with the shrapnel from a mine explosion still lodged in his chest, Hagel walked away from the war with two Purple Hearts and a host of other commendations.
The two men would later serve together in the U.S. Senate—Kerry as a Democrat, Hagel as a Republican. Neither voted consistently against the use of American forces abroad. Both, in fact, approved the resolution granting George W. Bush approval to pursue the foolish Iraq War.
Yet for Ted Cruz, who never served in the military, both Kerry and Hagel are dangerous peaceniks who cannot be trusted. Cruz, who has quickly earned a reputation in Washington for serving up Michelle Bachmann-style red meat to the right-wing crowd, didn't elaborate on his statement on stage and ducked out of the conference without fielding questions from the media. But it's simple to see where his objection lies: President Obama nominated Kerry and Hagel. If a Democratic president has nominated you, you must loathe the military. And if you're just another chicken-hawk Republican, you must love it more.
Re LTE #4: Mr. Chapell does not state if he is a combat veteran but if he is I send him my deepest respect and appreciation. I agree that the memories of pain, death, and destruction is a horrific scar to carry.
ReplyDeleteI know his letter comes from the heart, but it is s-o-o-o-o condescending. He points out that a combat solder's job 'has nothing to do with careers' and 'it is not a job opportunity'. AH, but IT IS! ALL soldiers, male AND female, take on the JOB not for the grand heroic music but because it is an HONORABLE job. It is a JOB that females have been willing and ready to do, alongside their male counterparts. Never mind political correct, his concept of gender equality is outright INCORRECT.
'This is about the most sacred service a CITIZEN [not gender specific] can perform for the country and his/HER fellow Americans.'
Yes, that jumped out at me too. It's a male-oriented mindset. Just leave out the pronoun: the most sacred service a citizen can perform for the country and fellow Americans. The pronoun speaks volumes about the underlying attitude.
DeleteWomen want the best of all worlds, and they want to leave the rest of it for men.
DeleteI'll admit I haven't applied for a construction job lately, but how many women do you see at a construction site? Not many I'll bet. And if you do, what kind of jobs are they doing? That's right, waving flags and such. I'm sure the men would be glad to wave the flags and let the women dig the ditches if they had a say in it.
The same thing is going to happen in the military. It wouldn't really matter except in this instance, it could be a matter of life and death.
This is yet another example of political correctness gone haywire.
Leave it liberals to screw up the natural order of things, and in this case, maybe get a lot of people killed.
Tell that to the Israeli's, Canadians, Australians, Kiwis....
DeleteTell that to the women during WWII who worked in the construction of airplanes and tanks.
DeleteNAWIC first gained a national charter in 1955.
DeleteWhy don't we have women playing football on men's professional teams? That's right, because most, if not all, are not as strong as men.
DeleteThat's because of nature....DNA....and all that stuff. It's why most people are heterosexual.
Use some common sense and logic for a change, liberals.
I can feel a Chick-fil-A day coming on.
Bucky, you ARE a chicken-fil-a. Ah, the might makes right old white male theory, so yesterday. So men are generally but not always stronger than women? So what? To be a combat soldier, one must pass certain tests, not all men in the military are fit for combat, and not all women will be either, but all deserve the chance to defend the country they love, their homes and children.
DeleteIt's machines that dig ditches and send explosives through the air. People operate them.
DeletePersonally knowing a large handful of female USMA and USNA cadets, I feel quite certain they know their limits and could be trusted with any machinery they can physically lift. They're waaay tougher and smarter than most chicken-fried men I know.
Oh, and most importantly, beautifully said LaSombra.
DeleteSome jobs are necessarily confined to folks of a certain strength. The military is no different. It takes strong people to wrest a thrown track back on to a tank's wheels (track assembly weighs about 1500#), or to help load a 95# shell into a 155mm breech. But in the main, today's military is not like the WW2 picture of the infantryman slogging along with a heavy mortar tube or machine gun on his shoulder.
DeleteWomen can serve quite well in the military. I am told that they have better endurance in some respects than men, particularly with stress.
The world record for bench press by a woman is 531 lbs.
DeleteWhat's so utterly pathetic is we go along with this PC crap like some of it is actually true, that's what's really disturbing.
DeleteJennifer Thompson, 132lb drug free powerlifter won the 2011 USAPL Raw Powerlifting Nationals. She squatted 315 lbs., benched 293 lbs., deadlifted 419 lbs. making a 1027 lb. total and a 521 wilks. Each lift was an American Record. Team Carolina also took 1st place.
DeleteAnd a man holds the world records in all those events. So what Bob?
DeleteSo woman can be strong enough to be in combat, that's what's so. I used to have a man that worked for me, Bill Dunn, former strength coach at Virginia, who competed in the World's Strongest Man Competition. He could bench over 800 lbs. The new world record is somewhere around 1070lbs. I know about strength in both men and women.
DeleteNot all combat requires strength. Lt Col. Tammy Duckworth served as a U.S. Army helicopter pilot and suffered severe combat wounds, losing both of her legs and damaging her right arm. She was the first female double amputee from the war. They are already in combat de facto and now it's time for de jure.
DeleteThey are the exception not the rule.
DeleteDid you read the definition on 'exceptional' yesterday that I posted, well just follow up on that.
Yes, and not all women or men are fit for combat, but those that are "exceptions" to the rule should have a right to fight for their country, to protect their homes and children, and bottom line, now they do.
DeleteThere are many men in the military that are not fit for combat duty and never will be.
DeleteI agree. Now you're finally getting back to the old logical Bob I used to know.
DeleteYou have made no coherent argument why women who are fit and ready for combat and can pass all physical requirements should not be allowed to do so. The Israeli Army, the Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, French, German, Dutch, Swedes.
DeleteSome of those countries that you cited have limitations on women's role their armies Bob.
DeleteDon't get cute with me. Okay?
please, elaborate
DeleteOH, and women deserve the best of all worlds whether they want it or not.
DeleteTim Grant, Winston-Salem Parks Director says from his experience smoking hasn’t been a huge problem at Winston-Salem parks. ”We’ve gotten a handful, one or two complaints over the past nine or ten years. I am not a smoker, and I wish nobody smoked. It's a horrible habit. But come on. Let these people smoke. It's outside we're talking about. You get more ugly stuff in your lungs from car pollutants than you would from someone smoking next to you in a park.

jump on those that sell the illegally too, like at gun shows where anyone can get a gun without a background check, even a terrorist.
DeleteJust remember, people don't shoot people, people with guns shoot people.
DeleteThe bottom line people are the problem in these crimes, Bob.
DeleteGuns don't get up in the morning by themselves, and go off and shoot people.
So if people are the problem, then lets make sure people that are not responsible don't have them.
DeleteLet's stop liberals/Democrats from taking them away from law abiding people first. They're out of control right now.
Delete"them?" what them? the 2nd Amendment is not being repealed, yet. We took cocaine out of coke, and lithium out of 7-up from law abiding citizens. This is not about taking guns away from law abiding citizens and you know it.
Deleteby your logic, if guns aren't the problem but people are, then let's make sure people don't have guns. problem solved.
DeleteLet's make sure criminals and mentally ill individuals don't have access to them.
DeleteTaking away guns from law abiding citizens is ineffective. We've already tried that, remember?
Of course, liberal Democrats don't care about that, they just want to punish somebody for the recent shootings, even if they had nothing to do with them.
no, we didn't, no one took guns away from anyone, they just banned the manufacturing and selling of them. get with the program
DeleteThe 10-year ban was passed by Congress on September 13, 1994, and was signed into law by President Bill Clinton the same day. The ban only applied to weapons manufactured after the date of the ban's enactment.
DeleteDuring the period when the AWB was in effect, it was illegal to manufacture any firearm that met the law's flowchart of an assault weapon or large capacity ammunition feeding device, except for export or for sale to a government or law enforcement agency. The law also banned possession of illegally imported or manufactured firearms, but did not ban possession or sale of pre-existing 'assault weapons' or previously factory standard magazines that were legally redefined as large capacity ammunition feeding devices. This provision for pre-ban firearms created higher prices in the market for such items, which still exist due to several states adopting their own assault weapons bans.
Interesting poll taken in Kentucky:
ReplyDelete75% support a law requiring criminal background checks for buyers, including private sales between individuals.
53% support a law that limits the amount of ammunition that can be bought at one time.
65% support a law that requires guns, like cars, to be registered by the state.
51% support a law that limits the amount of ammunition a gun can hold at once.
44% a nationwide ban on semi-automatic weapons while 45% oppose.
60% think it's more important to protect the right of Americans to own guns than it is to control gun ownership.
Let's have the numbers from a year ago Bob.

DeleteStop you nutty friends from taking away the Constitutional rights of law abiding citizens first, then I'll consider it.
Deletelol, is that you best shot?
Deleteyou mean like GW's decision to invade Iraq after 9/11?
DeleteLicense gun owners, leave the firearms unregistered with the government. Require transfers be done via licensed dealers who record the transfers as if they were sales, and charge for the service. No license, no sale or transfer. Strict penalties for possession/transportation without a license.
DeleteThe Iraq decision was coldly based on GWB's poll numbers, taking advantage of Americans' emtional response. No emotion there on the part of the Administration, just political pragmatism (cyncism).
DeleteI must admit that I was completely surprised that 65% of Kentuckians support gun registration with the state like cars.
DeleteI'm still of the mindset that guns should be treated like cars. To me, selling guns and ammo to any schmuck who can pass the 3 day wait is as stupid as handing the car keys over to a teen upon turning 16 who has never taken a driving class or driven a car. There should be required classes and tests in order to receive a gun license which must be renewed to ensure competency as well as required liability insurance.
DeleteI feel the same way about some liberals that vote. They can't read or write, and/or they have no concept of 'common sense' and/or 'logical reasoning'. They too should have liability insurance. They've clearly caused a lot of damage to our country.
DeleteRegistration is just a first step to governmental confiscation. That's why people oppose it.
Deletehmm, has anyone tried to take your car or motorcycle? No Anyone that thinks the government is going to try and confiscate legal guns from law abiding citizens is paranoid and foolish.
Deletebut then, you probably believe everything that frenchman says.
Delete"hmm, has anyone tried to take your car or motorcycle? No Anyone that thinks the government is going to try and confiscate legal guns from law abiding citizens is paranoid and foolish."
DeleteNot now, no, Bob. But, that is the objective of incrementalism. Keep moving the baseline, then start insisting that more needs to be done.
and perhaps in the future, more will need to be done. Who is to say?
DeleteWhen the second amendment was ratified, there were only about 6 million citizens in the entire nation. The first assault weapons ban began almost 20 years ago and instead of incrementalism and a moving baseline, it expired with nothing being confiscated nor the second amendment being repealed.
DeleteFYI: The Winston-Salem Journal Journalnow.com is dropping its billing association with Press+ and will be free until sometime in the Spring according to Cindy Hardison, manager of journal retention. This is good since I cancelled my payments to Press+ at the beginning of the month. There erratic billing practices cost me an overdraft fee. They were billing me on the 10th of each month, until December when it was the 5th, and then January 2nd without explanation. ReplyDeleteRE: AP courses at the Career Center:
Well the clarification certainly puts a different spin on the topic. $5 million is a noteworthy chunk, but less than $10K per school is another story.
Would it have made sense to offer the most popular AP course at each high school? Is it AP History? I can see not wanting AP German at every school, but to have one AP course at, particularly the geographically dispersed high schools, could be a good idea.
I'd like to think that the school board is making the decision with the student's best interest in mind, instead of their own reputations. I know absolutely nothing about the school board nowadays, nor do I have any information about the budgeting/strategy process... however I did graduate from WSFC schools and I would've jumped on an AP opportunity had it existed back in my day. And like Dotnet says, the Career Center would've been a schlep for me.
And the Career Center is located on Miller St, near Silas Creek Parkway right there with Forsyth Tech, so the morning traffic is very congested.
Deleteare there two Career Centers, one at 1615 Miller St. and one on 910Highland CT, which means students are driving on John Gold Expressway (highway 52). That's right there with Kennedy High School.
DeleteWow, that's a new development since my days.
DeleteCareer Center is no longer behind Forsyth Tech. It moved last Jan. near Liberty St. exit off Hwy 52.
DeleteYes, right there at MLK and Highland, not far from Social Services, there are still two listings on the internet searches, but I have seen the new facility. It looks nice from the outside, but traffic in the am must be prohibitive.

It was gooooooooooood today. I went over to Gander Mountain too. A trip to both places is better than dinner and a movie with a hottie for me.
DeleteA lot of ammo is going out of the door over at Gander.
DeleteI'll bet gun and ammo stocks are booming. Thanks Obama.
Bucky, if you'll decline a hottie in preference to a chicken and a Gander, you need professional help.
DeleteThe problem with gun laws is, criminals don't cooperate with them. The mentally ill don't cooperate with them," he said. "Law-abiding gun owners will not accept blame for the acts of violent or deranged criminals, nor do we believe the government should dictate what we can lawfully own and use to protect our families... We need to be honest about what works and what does not work. Proposals that would only serve to burden the law-abiding have failed in the past and will fail in the future."
ReplyDeleteWayne La Pierre of the NRA
__________
Punishing law abiding citizens is all Democrats know how to do.
La Pierre? nor do we believe the govwernment should dictate what we can lawfully own and use to protect our families. lol, so le Frog believes one should be able to own a missile launcher, hand grenades, tactical nuclear weapons, to protect a family?
DeleteMost Assault weapons are considered 'small arms', and most are .22 caliber.
DeleteGet educated before you start shooting your mouth off.
Just like a liberal. Jeez!
I'm just going by what the frenchman said: nor do we believe that the government should dictate what we can lawfully own and use to protect our families.
DeleteIt's already against the law to own and use certain weapons to protect one's family and lefrog says the government should not be able to do that.
DeleteStrictly speaking, most assault weapons are 7.62x39 caliber. The .224-cal weapons commonly referred as such are simply rifles or carbines.
DeleteHow many rounds will/would it take to defend one's family from riotous thugs like the one's in L.A. after the acquittal of the police officers in the Rodney King trial.
DeleteI'm just glad those 'thugs' were respectful of the jurors' decision.
Hee....but it's okay if you're black. You can do what you want, right liberals?
How many people would take their families to the streets during the riots?
DeleteGood afternoon folks!
ReplyDeleteLTE 1, 3: I noted yesterday that accepting the fed money to enable each school to offer the most popular AP courses such as English, Calculus and Chemistry while leaving the rest (such as Miss Arnolda's Music Theory and German) to the Career Center. As I also noted yesterday, I had a full period devoted to AP Travel which could have been devoted to taking another AP course if the courses were offered at my school instead of just the Career Center. The only downside for me would have been missing out on the extreme pleasure of looking at my AP English teacher and her incomparable legs.
LTE 2: Abortion. As far as whether or not abortion is "preferable" to various potential outcomes, the question is should that decision be made by the parent(s) or the govt?
LTE 4: Not much to add to La Sombra's response. One would think that anyone, male or female, who enlists knows what they are signing up for and the potentially dire situations they may find themselves in.
The bear is ready to go! Who's next?
ReplyDeleteWho wants to wrestle the bear....come one...come all!
Deletewho wants to wrestle someone who is overweight and hairy?>>> bear
DeleteI run five Bob. Forget your stupid image of that other person.
DeleteI always get the grilled over at Chick-fil-A too.
DeleteYour the one that called yourself a "bear." And in human terms, a bear is overweight and hairy, usually with some facial hair too.
Deletegrilled chicken parts on a mushy white bread bun with a pickle, yum. I take personal responsibility and fix my own meals.
DeleteThis week I make chicken vegetable gumbo and serve it over homemade skillet cornbread.
DeleteI go for the company. There's a lot heterosexuals there.
Deleteawww, Bucky, are you so lonely you have to go to a fast food restaurant for company? Why bless your little heart.
DeleteSpends all day chatting with a gay man and other liberals online and has to go to fast food restaurant for company, "Oh what a world, what a world!!!" The wicked witch of the East
DeleteBob, you have robbed my heroine, the Wicked Witch of the West, of her last words. Her sister, WW East, had no speaking lines in the movie, was the unfortunate victim of the insufficiently and negligently secured house that crashed upon her.
DeleteThe Wicked Witch of the West received the worst conceivable PR, far worse than directed at contemporary politicians. She is characterized as a villain, but consider:
1. She was entitled to the slippers, as they belonged to her sister. Glenda robbed WW East's body and Dorothy received the stolen goods, subsequently absconding, and joining a motley band.
2. Apparently, my heroine had clear title to the West, as that was never disputed in the movie. However, the legitimacy of Oz' ruler might well be questioned, as he appears to have been an illegal immigrant. Birthers might well want to research this, since President Obama's birth certificate has put them out of business.
3. Thus, the order from The Great and Powerful Oz/Professor Marvel to capture the rightful property of The Wicked Witch, her transportation, would be illegal. Even without the citizenship question, the order appears to be illegal, since there was no question the WWW owned her broom, and there doesn't appear to have been a declared war.
4. There appears to have no reason for conflict with WWW, except with Dorothy over the slippers. WWW did not oppress the Munchkins, and appeared to leave them liberated after her sister's death.
5. Dorothy and her band of misfits committed aggravated assault upon WWW's security staff, and stole possessions belonging to either the guards or to WWW. They then illegally entered the premises to pursue their theft conspiracy. Encountering WWW, who was defending her domicile and seeking return of her property, Dorothy committed involuntary witch slaughter. Note that she was remorseful, but since the homicide occurred during the course of multiple felonies, it was actually felony murder.
5. WWW was apparently a competent and benign ruler, even if her ungrateful (no doubt unionized) staff appeared to celebrate her passing. The guards may have resented WWW's commitment to diversity; note the staffing of her environmentally correct air force. Also note WWW's own zero-emissions transport, and her commitment to water conservation. She also appears to have been careful about the siting of her residence.
6. Back in Oz, the mountebank who ruled the domain abdicated his position, leaving the running of the country in the hands of someone with no brain, a condition common to a number of American political types. He then set off poorly prepared, and abandoning Dorothy and her dog after accepting them in his care.
7. Finally, conniving Glenda shows back up, tells Dorothy all she had to get back to KS was make a wish, which she could have done right after Glenda stole the shoes. The Munchkins would have still had their freedom and WWW would not have been the victim of felony murder.
So, WWW has had incredibly bad PR, but I have now set the record straight.
And thank you for that.
DeleteI see now that I have been negligent lo these many years in attending to business re Ms. WWWW. See how easily we fall prey to propaganda?
That Dorothy chick was a bad little girl. One question...what was Toto's role in all this? Does he get a good dog or a bad dog?
Whistleblower. He revealed the identity of the ruler of Oz.
DeleteInteresting: Frank Morgan, who played Oz/Professor Marvel, also played 3 other roles in the movie.
Wayne LaPierre is a poor spokesperson for the NRA. I'm surprised that the otherwise politically savvy outfit uses such a blunderbuss.
ReplyDeleteHe does okay. The problem you've got are these liberal bullies like Obama and some Democrats on TV everyday, chirping away like our favorite forum NW. Plus, throw in the radical, leftist news media like CNN, ABC, NBC, and MSNBC and the NRA is already in a hole coming out of the gate.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteWe've got to get the truth out Stab. Dotnet, Sombra, GG, and dotnet have demonstrated that they clearly don't have clue. And there are millions more like them out there.
DeleteBob knows better, he just wants to argue with me. That's my take on his comments.
Bucky, this is a matter of personal philosophy rather than "having a clue." Although I have argued, arguing is to some extent pointless. Some of our friends here believe that certain currently legal weapons should be restricted. We do not. That is a chasm that will not be bridged here. Legislators will decide, for good or ill.
DeleteAnd Bucky, as witnessed concerning this issue, people Can disagree without being disagreeable.
DeleteSo if some people think that banning certain types of weapons will not decrease the number of deaths caused by those weapons, why would they think that banning abortions would decrease the number of abortions?
ReplyDeleteOne can decrease deaths by banning/restricting lots of things.
DeleteTrue, and that's exactly why there is a vigorous debate on gun violence in America.
DeleteYes, the debate pivots on differing philosophies to some extent, as I noted above.
DeleteSome changes, however, make sense, such as background checks, owner licensing, gun show restrictions.
Even the NRA and Wayne LaPierre were in favor of background checks back in the 90's. I wonder what happened to that position?
DeleteI'm in favor of background checks too. I think the local gun shows require them already. I've seen them doing it. I just go to look, and I know it pisses off liberals.
DeleteI used to go to Pulliams afterwards to get a hotdog, but that food is just not healthy. Now I go to where-Chick-fil-AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
North Carolina General Statutes
DeleteArticle 52A
§ 14‑402. Sale of certain weapons without permit forbidden.
(a) It is unlawful for any person, firm, or corporation in this State to sell, give away, or transfer, or to purchase or receive, at any place within this State from any other place within or without the State any pistol unless: (i) a license or permit is first obtained under this Article by the purchaser or receiver from the sheriff of the county in which the purchaser or receiver resides; or (ii) a valid North Carolina concealed handgun permit is held under Article 54B of this Chapter by the purchaser or receiver who must be a resident of the State at the time of the purchase.
It is unlawful for any person or persons to receive from any postmaster, postal clerk, employee in the parcel post department, rural mail carrier, express agent or employee, railroad agent or employee within the State of North Carolina any pistol without having in his or their possession and without exhibiting at the time of the delivery of the same and to the person delivering the same the permit from the sheriff as provided in G.S. 14‑403. Any person violating the provisions of this section is guilty of a Class 2 misdemeanor.
Since there is at least one regular attendee of this forum who could never in a million years figure out what that says, here's what it says:
It is illegal for anyone to sell or purchase a hand gun anywhere in NC without the purchaser having in her possession a vaild permit from the local sheriff.
Add give or receive to sell or purchase. That pretty much covers it.
DeleteI wonder if the statute defines "pistol." By some definitions, a pistol is a magazine-fed handgun, as opposed to a revolver. In common usage, of course, a pistol is simply any ol' handgun.
DeleteAs for shipping, that is almost always from dealer to dealer.
The statute goes on for pages, and defines "pistol" in great detail...any manifestation of "pistol" that you can think of is included.
DeleteIt even specifies items not included, i.e. "antique pistols", which are also fully defined.
Of course, John Wilkes Booth shot Abraham Lincoln with an "antique pistol", a single-shot flintlock, made by Philadelphia gunsmith Henry Derringer. It's tiny - just six inches total in length with a 2 1/2" barrel - but it's powerful, firing a .44-calibur bullet.
It certainly managed to change the course of American history. Homemade "zip guns" have done the same, thus the futility of trying to ban any particular weapon. How do you ban crazy people?
Phargo's on phire today! xx
ReplyDeletephunny phemale
DeletePhantastic! xx
DeleteWow! Just say guns and watch the loonies start to dance.
ReplyDeleteHere is the way it will work. First, they ban the manufacture and sale of “assault rifles”, and make some rules about magazines and ammo. Then they “discover” that it is really hand guns that are evil, so they ban the manufacture and sale of hand guns.
Then they discover that the real problem is the 300 million plus guns already in the hands of idiots, so they decide to confiscate all guns. This will be a simple job…the government will federalize the some 750,000 state and municipal law enforcement officers nationwide, combine them with some 135,000 federal officers and the 3 million or so active and reserve duty military to form a formidable confiscation task force numbering nearly 4 million confiscators.
They will go door to door, searching every nook and cranny of every building in the US until all firearms are in government hands. It is estimated that this task will take only 107 years and cost only about $770 trillion. It is amazing that there are actually people who think that something like this could happen.
Of course, it makes just as much sense as this scenario: Project L.U.C.I.D.—The Beast 666 Universal Human Control System: It's frightening, and it's real…the covert government operation destined to devour the whole world. Soon, every person on Earth—even newborn babies—will be issued the universal biometrics I.D. card. Resisters will have a mind control biochip surgically implanted in their brains. The ISO 9000 program requires that all manufactured goods be controlled with the number of the beast, 666.
Project L.U.C.I.D. empowers America's hidden SS establishment, headed by Osama Obama to use its massively powerful, computer databases to control your bank accounts and purchases, and to monitor intimate details of your life. Spy satellites; hidden, miniature video cameras; and interactive TV sets will be watching your every move. Your telephone calls will be wiretapped and recorded by remote computers.
All data on you will be linked, networked, and processed by a Central Gestapo, where faceless bureaucrats give orders to police, military, and intelligence agencies. This is the new, global police state, made up of the FBI, KGB, CIA, DEA, DIA, NSA, IRS, EPA, NCIC, USDA, FDA, NRO, BATF, FINCEN, INS, DOJ, WTO, Europol, Interpol, Mossad, and the MAB.
Truth be known, LUCID is exactly as likely as gun confiscation. Hysteria anyone?
Jim Nabors, 82, and Stan Wallender, a former Honolulu firefighter, got married in Seattle on January 15.
ReplyDeleteThey have been together for 38 years.
I have a friend that lives in the Socialist Republic of California, and he says ammo and gun buying has almost reached the 'panic' level. Most gun owners there know that the state is almost certain to pass highly restrictive gun legislation in the coming weeks.
ReplyDeleteThat 'panic' level buying has resulted in a nationwide shortage of ammunition, and handguns are reportedly flying off the shelves as well. There's really no telling how many millions of dollars worth of guns that have been sold in the past few weeks. One thing that is for certain: Because the Democrats have instilled a sense of fear upon people that people may soon lose all of their gun ownership rights, they are buying guns in record numbers.
Teen who performed at Obama inaugural events shot dead in Chicago
ReplyDelete____________
Chicago has some of the strictest gun laws in America. Did they prevent this crime? No.
As always, Tiny raves on about stuff that he knows nothing about.
ReplyDeleteWe would like to thank the gun nuts for driving up gun stock prices. Way back in February, 2012, when the first polls for the 2012 election came out, we realized that the President was probably going to win a second term. And we knew that that would cause the crazies to go crazy, so we started buying selected gun and ammo stocks.
Our two biggest buys, Smith & Wesson and Sturm Ruger, have done rather well. S&W's stock is up 100% since January 2012. Sturm Ruger is up about 50%. Sorry, Tiny, but it is too late for you to cash in. Both stocks are at or near peak sustainability. As soon as it becomes obvious that nothing is really going to happen, those prices will begin to drop.
We will be selling soon, just before the plunge.
Again we thank the hysterians for our soon to be profits. We will give some to local police agencies to help them cover the cost of defending themselves against all the new guns and ammo. We might spend some of the rest on a long delayed trip to Tahiti, which, as an overseas department of France, has one of the lowest crime rates in the world. They do have a lot of good beer and the local marijuana, pakalolo, is absolutely tops.
