The Leopard's Limb 07/28/11 (leftovers, off-topics, whatever)

Word watch
An NBC reporter used the phrase "since the stock market tanked" in a report to anchor Brian Williams.

The budget ordeal
I emailed Virginia Foxx' office yesterday, urging her to support a compromise and get something passed before we default. I pointed out that one of the lesser, but still bad, consequences of default will be the subsequent reinstallation of Nancy Pelosi as Speaker in 2013.

I may follow up the email today with a phone call (I'm advised that phone calls carry more weight--I sit to be corrected about that, however). The Boehner bill being thrashed about in the House is simply political posturing that will go nowhere in the Senate.

From the keyboard of the Leopard
Poster O. T. Rush weighed in last night in the Wednesday LTE's re the debt/deficit. His remarks are worthy of comments, thus I'm reposting it:

One of the biggest problems that we have regarding money in this country is that many of those who choose to comment, including quite a few in the Congress, have a serious vocabulary problem.

They use the terms deficit and debt interchangeably, simply because they don't know any better.

The DEBT is the total of all the money that the nation owes.

The DEFICIT is the amount that we are short each year between income and outgo. The annual deficit, of course, adds to the total debt, but they are far from being the same thing.

The average American homeowner carries a debt to earnings ratio of about 5-1. The USA carries a ratio of about 1-1. As has been pointed out by many real experts, the USA could easily carry a higher ratio. But it would be better if homeowners and the USA carried much lower ratios.

For the USA, the long-term debt is a problem, but nothing can be done to lower it until the deficit is dealt with. So debt is a low priority item at the moment.

If, instead of listening to the hysterical voices of those running for office in 2012, you listen to people who have no horse in the race, but actually know a lot more about economics...say David Stockman and the British magazine "The Economist", you will find that they agree on what needs to be done, keeping in mind that many of the "ideas" of the most hysterical voices would do serious, if not fatal, damage to the fragile US economy.

There are two necessary elements:

1. Cut spending. That is a given. Of course, as pointed out above, there the devil is in the details.

2. Increase revenue. That is a must, because the deficit cannot be substantially reduced by spending cuts alone without destroying any hope of economic recovery. There are two necessary elements for increasing revenue:
a. Increase taxes. That is not optional. Again, the devil is in the details, but it has to be done. Those who     still recite the old mantra that increasing taxes reduces jobs are living in the discredited past. We know it isn't so.
b. Increase the number of jobs. That means that the national economy must be prodded into a healthier mode. How that is to be done is a matter for debate. But consider this.

After 12 years of corruption and neglect by three different presidents created and then deepened the Great Depression (Hoover was not individually responsible for the depression, but his doing nothing for three years made it worse), FDR was advised to try to spend his way out. That, of course, created a fire storm of opposition, which limited the amount of spending that FDR was able to do.
Most legitimate economic historians now say that that was the biggest problem, that FDR should have spent more, which probably would have ended the depression before the outbreak of WW II and even might have prevented that great disaster.

It would be interesting to see what might happen if the American people and their so-called leaders started learning and thinking rather than just reacting to the Chicken Little mentality of the moment.

More from the Leopard
O. T. furnishes more grist for the mill, with a reply to another of our excellent posters, whitewall:

"We will replace that over matched empty suit Marxist front man in thw White House and add a dozen TEA Party type freshmen Senators to the US Senate at the same time as well ad a few more in the House."

As to Whitewall's comment, I am LMAO. Whitewall usually seems to be a reasonable man. But this comment is coming from out of far left field in la la land.

Just who does he think is going to win the office of President for the GOP? After the other GOP candidates destroy Romney for his religious beliefs, there will be three left: Bachmann, Perry and Palin. Does Whitewall seriously believe that any sane voter would choose any of those idiots?

I know Stab has already said that he will not vote for Obama. Since I know for sure that he is not an idiot, I assume that he means that he will vote for the Libertarian candidate, or do a write-in.

Besides, today I saw my first Obama 2012 bumper sticker. Obama is already at least a year ahead of whoever gets the GOP nomination. His people are going door to door, right now, in our town and in thousands of towns across the country. The only question remaining is how much Obama will win by.

As to the "TT Party" (Mommy, I've got to TT), they have had their innings and wasted them on frivolous, symbolic stuff that has failed to advance their or the nation's cause. Anyone who expects them to increase their numbers in either Washington or Raleigh is guilty of "California Dreamin'" as the Mommas and the Poppas put it.

If Bachmann, who is currently #2 in the GOP 2012 polls, gets the nomination, we will be lucky if there is anything left of the GOP after election day 2012.

The American people can be slow and obtuse, but they are most definitely not stupid.

  1. Re FDR and spending our way out of the Depression: I have read Paul Krugman's opinion that FDR should have done more spending, which we finally did do, as we fought what Krugman calls "that great public works project" aka World War 2.

Overlooked in that analysis is that we put 16MM people in uniform over the course of the war, and underpaid them. We also enforced saving at home by restricting the availability of consumer goods. Also, the US hadn't borrowed its way to the hilt before it really needed to borrow its way to the hilt, as we have now done.

One mistake FDR made in dealing with the Depression was in signing the National Labor Relations Act. President Obama is making the same mistake by turning the WH into an AFL-CIO/SEIU local and letting the NLRB implement the machinations of union chieftains. An economy is not revitalized by increasing costs to business and cutting productivity, to say nothing of trampling the rights of employees and businesses.

  2. Re election prospects in 2012. I have been disappointed in the performance of Republicans in both the US and the NC Houses. I do not anticipate gains in either. If we go into default, I see losses in both.

The Presidency is a different matter. President Obama is not particularly popular. In polling matches against a generic Republican candidate, he loses. But, in polling matches against specific candidates, he loses (by a narrow margin) to Romney. Against other Republicans, he wins by varying margins.

However, O.T. is correct in that Obama is indeed running hard already. He will, thanks to his union string-pullers and people like George Soros, have about $1B to spend (OK, libs, let's hear the keening about Citizens United those evil corporations).

O.T. quotes me correctly: I will under no circumstances vote for Obama, because of his support of unionization by intimidation and NLRB fiat. However, there is indeed no one in the Republican field whom I support at the moment. I might go with Giulani if he decides to run. Yes, he has a bit of personal ethical baggage, but we got over worrying about that sort of thing with Wilard and Hillary, didn't we?

As for WW's comments re President Obama, I agree that he is over his head. I also agree that he is having to govern far closer to the center than he would like. His leftist allegiance is pretty clear, reflected in his ties to unions and his appointment of union goons and stooges to various positions in his Administration. Then there was the appointment of self-proclaimed Communist Van Jones as "green jobs czar." One should not appoint a member of an organization dedicated to the overthrow of the US government and the usurpation of the US economy by oppressive ideologues.

  3. Left over for OT....my comment re Obama came from right field- not left field. It is based on my knowledge of Obama the image vs the man as well as his fellow travelers. His ideological soul mates that taught him I know well. Mr Obama is the ultimate liberal, the pinnacle of their ideology. A smooth Statist, kingly autocrat and well schooled Alinsky-ite with a command of the comfortable words to soothe the masses. We are no longer soothed. Someone will be nominated to run against him and will win- money not withstanding. Obama can't run on his record.

  5. Actually, in the three most recent polls, Obama is even against "generic republican". Of course there is no such thing...he can't run against Ike...so that won't happen.

In the nine polls done over the last two months, Obama is up 4.3 points on Romney, by far the best GOP candidate. The only poll in which Romney wins is Ramussen, which seems to always be out of sync with everyone else.

Against all other possible GOP candidates, Obama wins by double digits, the worst having shifted from Bachmann a few months ago to Palin, who now trails by a whopping 20. Obama might want to contribute some of his largesse to her campaign coffers.

Giuliani is NOT going to run. As pointed out recently, there are a number of legit Republicans who could run but won't, because they are willing to wait until 2016. Giuliani is one of them, but he now carries even more baggage because of his very close ties to Rupert Murdoch.

Obama's record is nowhere near as bad as some would portray it. The stock market has recovered nicely, corporate profits are booming...the big bugaboo right now is unemployment, which is a wait and see matter. Perhaps even more important is the manner in which the TT Party fools have conducted themselves. As one of my very conservative friends said recently "We've already shot ourselves in one foot...now we're trying to zero in on the other one."

WW is guilty of wishful thinking. There isn't going to be a last minute cavalry charge, nor will there be a last minute savior. That only happens in the movies.

  6. Well there he goes again, I cant let OT get by with his statement-"Actually, in the three most recent polls, Obama is even against "generic republican"." Oh really?
Rasmussen-July 26,2011:" A generic Republican candidate leads President Obama by six points again this week in a hypothetical 2012 election match-up(GOP 48% to Obama 42%). A week ago the Republican led 47% to 41%, with the president’s support at the lowest level found thus far. The GOP candidate has now outpolled the president in nine of 12 surveys conducted weekly since early May."

Per Gallup- GOP generic candidate 47%, Obama 49%.

Sure OT might be able to find some off the wall leftist polls that has Obama even but the major polls show Obama trailing.

  7. Oh, my poor beloved brother robby boy. If he could actually read, he would really be something.

I pointed out that the results are usually different in the Rasmussen poll...they always seem to lean a good bit to the right. Wonder what you would call that.

The other polls that I cite certainly do meet the criteria for "liberal", seeing as how robby boy's criteria for "liberal" is anything to the left of his left-right-left-right goosestep thinking, especially that pinko outfit called Fox News, whose latest poll shows Obama leading Romney 47-41.

Poor, poor beloved brother robby boy. Wait, I've got an idea. Maybe Dr. Atala at Wake Regenerative could make poor robby boy a new brain. Let's hope so.

  8. My post was about your "generic republican" reference, not Romney. I said nothing about Romney. Your reference to Rasmussen being "different" refers to Romney v Obama. Your "generic republican" reference says nothing about Rasmussen. Your so friggin stupid you dont even know what your own post says, but then I'm not surprised.

  9. the problem for Republicans is there are no "generic" Republicans. They all have names like Romney, Bachmann, Pawlenty, Newt, Cain, Paul,

    ReplyDelete
  10. Yes, Bob, exactly. And each carries his own baggage. In all cases for the current GOP leaders, that load is significant.

    Scenario:

Sarah Palin is lolling on her porch at her former home in Alaska, keeping an eye on the Russians walking along the beach across the Bering Sea, hundreds of miles away.

She can do this because by Alaska state law, which she had enacted her first day in office, the curvature of the earth is cancelled for the Bering Sea. And she also has the eyes of an eagle, and then some.

Suddenly, a horseman appears, galloping toward her, crying "The Russians are coming, the Russians are coming!" He pulls up at the edge of her yard.

"Who the hell are you?" Sarah shouts.

"I'm Paul Revere," comes the reply. "The Russians are coming, the Russians are coming!"

"Honey, you've got it all wrong," Sarah says. "You're supposed to be warning THEM."

    "Oh!" says Paul. "Sorry."

He wheels his horse around and dashes off westward toward the Bering Sea and Russia, crying "The Russians are coming, the Russians are coming!"

  12. Oops, I just noticed that in the post just prior to Bob's my dearly beloved brother robby boy was beginning to foam at the mouth and the spittle was flying all the way across the Bering Sea.

I guess the fact that a generic Republican is like a generic serial killer, non-existent and therefore irrelevant, has caused this.

I do sincerely hate to see the poor boy in such a state.

Does anyone know the number to call for emergency transportation to Butner?
