Winston-Salem Journal LTE FR 10/05/12

Cooperation is needed
The financial woes facing this country are well documented. Neither President Obama, the pro-tax increase, pro-mandated health-care incumbent president, nor Mitt Romney, the pro-tax increase, pro-mandated health-care former governor of Massachusetts, will be able to solve the problem without the bipartisan support of Congress. This will require cooperation and compromise on the part of all involved. It will also require raising revenues, i.e. taxes, and reducing spending in order to reduce the deficit.
For the past four years, a group of right-wing, conservative members of Congress has made it its job to block any attempts to increase taxes on the people who can afford it most. This partisan and uncompromising attitude has resulted in an aptly named “Do-Nothing Congress” at a time when the country requires that the government take strong and decisive action to address the deficit. Rep. Virginia Foxx has done a disservice to our community and she, along with her colleagues, has contributed to the fiscal ruination that we face as a country.
If Foxx refuses to reach across the aisle in the spirit of cooperation and compromise to find solutions to the fiscal problems at hand, “We The People” need to find another representative who will put the best interests of our community and our county above their own.

Odd evidence
Like a burst of stale air from a newly discovered tomb, ancient pseudo-Gospels now appear with some regularity, feeding the media’s and the public’s appetite for anything heterodox. The latest Coptic “Gospel” fragment to come to light, which quotes Jesus speaking about his “wife,” is no exception (“ Scholars doubt papyrus about Jesus' wife ,” Sept. 20). If authentic, it is most likely part of the same ancient Gnostic tradition that brought us the Gospel of Judas and even The DaVinci Code.
These Gnostic Gospels may be new to the media, but they are hardly news to the church. In AD 180, St. Irenaeus published a book listing and refuting these writings.
While they were attracted initially to the theology of Christianity, Gnostics rejected its core doctrines. They believed that salvation came through the sharing of a “special knowledge,” secret teachings not recorded in the original Gospels but passed down orally from Jesus to a few select disciples.
The Gnostics eventually traveled to Upper Egypt, where they established communities in the desert — the isolation providing a safer environment for their practices and doctrines. The dry climate and low humidity there also provided a unique time-capsule for the preservation of their papyrus manuscripts.
Knowing this as we do, it would seem ludicrous to treat this fragment as evidence of a shared “dialogue” within early Christianity about Jesus’ marital status. It is really nothing more than an oddity belonging to an age, like our own, that was never short of cult-leaders and crackpots.

Sum It Up
The Sum It Up question from Sunday was: What will Gov. Bev Perdue's legacy be?
 Lies, lies, and more lies.
MONA POTTS
Gov. Bev Perdue's legacy will be set in stone as the worst governor in history.
BETH McMULLAN
About the same as Jimmy Carter’s.
DONALD R. CREWS
Simple; she will be forgotten in record time, assuming she is not prosecuted for something.
KEN HOGLUND
 Her shiny lip gloss.

  1. Woooooowieeeeee! Suddenly, the unemployment rate drops below 8% for the FIRST time in 43 months, right before the election. How convienent?

"Meanwhile, the unemployment rate unexpectedly fell to 7.8% in September, from 8.1% the prior month." CNN

Of course, most people know that the Department of Labor is headed by a Democrat appointed by Obama. But, there's no way those unemployment numbers can be manipulated, right? And if you believe that, I'll bet you believe everything that Rush says is true, too.

Also, remember when our favorite NW came out with some numbers from the Tax Policy Center? Seems they had to 'correct' their numbers recently relative to Romney's tax plan where they said his plan would raise taxes on the middle class.

So remember when a Democrat speaks at this juncture of the election cycle, it's probably with a forked-tongue.

    2. Another good one is surfacing Wordly. Romney lied during the debate. That's why he whipped the ever loving daylights out of Obama.

Democrats have always got an excuse.

I can't wait to hear how Anto'ny 'Weiner's' pants got pulled down by his dog when he runs for election the next time around.

  2. Both the GOP and the La Raza are being investigated in Florida for voter fraud. But liberal Democrats say there is no voter fraud in America, so we don't need voter I.D. laws.

    Huh?

  3. Romney has lied from Day One, just ask Newt Gingrich: "Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, whose support in Iowa has withered after riding on top of the polls, on Tuesday called former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney a liar who would mislead the American people if elected to the White House..."

  4. The unemployment rate is not calculated by the Department of Labor.

The unemployment rate is calculated from information gathered by the monthly Current Population Survey, which is conducted by the US Census Bureau, a part of the Department of Commerce.

The same basic process has been followed since 1940.

  5. A lot of people send questionable photos online, but for real disgust and perversion, talk to Neal Horslt:
    "Is it true?" Colmes asked.

"Hey, Alan, if you want to accuse me of having sex when I was a fool, I did everything that crossed my mind that looked like I..."

AC: "You had sex with animals?"

NH: "Absolutely. I was a fool. When you grow up on a farm in Georgia, your first girlfriend is a mule."

AC: "I'm not so sure that that is so."

He is now running for governor in Georgia as a Republican and says that he'd kill his own son for liberty. I'm not kidding you.

and you want to continuously bring up Anthony Weiner???? You're a bigger joke than he is.

    2. Ha, ha...I seem to recall a discussion about Chicago which the Dunce pulled his famous buttinsky act on...at first he was implying that he was very familiar with the Windy City, but when the discussion got down to some specific places, he backed off and admitted that he had only been in the airport...more of his BS travel claims...ABCs...Philadelphia restaurants like Le Bec-fin..endless nonsense.

I normally avoid speaking directly to the pompous jerk, but...

Bucky, you are a fool and as phony as the war on terror. Your reading, comprehension and writing skills are below grade level, 6th grade, that is. You are easily the most ignorant person I have ever encountered online, and that is saying something, considering the folks who used to inhabit the original Journal LTE site.

Truth is, I feel sorry for you and your overwhelming childish need to get attention at any cost...poor thing.

  9. What's wrong with media bias? It's everywhere. Take talk radio for instance. It's almost completely dominated by right wing conservative extremists, hardly any liberal talk radio in comparison. Why do you think that is? I think it's because the "educated elite, the ones that will never be on our side (rick santorum)," can read and write articles, while the conservative base still needs to get their information read to them.

  10. Good AM, folks!
Fact checkers found misrepresentations on both sides of the debate.

Although it's not saying much, but the substance of Obama's answers was better than his presentation. He will present himself better in the next debate.

Al Gore says the altitude affected President Obama's performance. Democrat Bob Beckel waved that off as a fatuous suggestion.

Left-wing readers v. right-wing listeners: years ago, someone asked the conservative publisher of "Time" magazine why he employed liberal writers. He replied, "For some GD reason, Repubicans can't write!"

I like radio because I have insufficient time to read, but can listen to the radio while I ready myself and drive to work. But, I listen to NPR, do not listen to the right-wing yakkers. Sometimes, if I can remember where to find him, I like listening to Colmes. He impressed me some years back when a caller impugned Fox Network. Colmes took issue with the guy, noting that the guy was denigrating Colmes' employer. "I don't like you," he said to the caller, and disconnected the call.

  12. Re the comments on Gov. Perdue. I don't follow state politics that closely, but I never saw where she was that bad a governor. I didn't like her telling public officials to speak with the SEANC, but other than that, I paid little attention to her. Can sources other than Bucky, whose opinions are clear, enlighten why the apparent unpopularity?

    3. I'd say she has been a middling governor, nothing special in either direction. Considering the times, middling is probably about as good as anyone could do.

Assuming that he holds on to win, I suspect that McCrory will be a one-term governor as well.

The big campaign scandal turned out to be not much.

Wordly is right that unemployment numbers have hurt her, as if she has any control over that.

She did veto some of the most ridiculous bills passed by the legislature.

On the whole I'd give her a grade somewhere between C and B, leaning toward C.

All the "worst governor" BS comes from hysterical windbags like Dunce and his mentor, Limbaugh...those who know nothing about anything.

Of course, for Dunce, her biggest minus is that she is a woman...when he hears that word, his poor little knees start knocking.

  13. Good afternoon folks!
LTE 1: Oh wow, a decent letter on the debt for a change. Indeed it will take a combination of spending cuts and tax increases in order to tackle the debt. This will indeed require compromise because it means the D's will have to agree to spending cuts beyond what they want and the R's will have to agree to tax increases beyond what they want. It will be interesting to see if Congress can agree on a compromise before this exact scenario of deep tax increases and spending cuts automatically comes to fruition. Should have been Correspondent of the Week.

LTE 2: There are quite a few interesting documents from that era that have been uncovered and continue to be uncovered. I will leave it up to ancient history experts who are far more versed than I am in deciphering the script, understanding what was written in the concept of the time it was written, as well as the authenticity.

Sum it up: Gov Perdue will at least go down as the first female governor. Like Obama, she came into office at a really, really bad time. The core of NC's workforce was amongst the hardest hit by the recession. A state can't completely reengineer its economic core overnight. New industries have to be recuited and workers have to be retrained. Having to deal with indictments of several state officials including the previous governor followed by the election of the worst state legislature in memory didn't help matters. NC is required to have a balanced budget, and the almost overnight doubling of the UR left the state in a serious pickle due to the massive loss of revenues combined with the massive increase in spending for unemployment benefits.
