Winston-Salem Journal LTE FR 10/19/12

A man’s character
Just the character of the man is all one needs to know to want to support David Sipprell for Forsyth district court judge.
I have known and witnessed the growth and maturity of this young man throughout his lifetime. I remember him when he (and his brother) were “knee-high,” playing sports in the Clemmons area. I watched him grow and mature through the years. Always steady, prepared, even tempered and alert; up to the game always.
I have watched him in the courtroom — always prepared and always professional.
He is an Eagle Scout. That shows character, quality, tenacity and ability to set and accomplish goals. A UNC graduate and UNC law-school graduate. Again, illustrating intelligence and determination. A U.S. Air Force veteran in the JAG office. Service to our country. Dedicated service to our community as a prosecutor in the Forsyth County District Attorney's office.
David is without question the better candidate for this important district court judge seat.
I am very happy to know David Sipprell and his family and look forward to voting for him on Nov. 6 and urge everyone to do so.

Feeding the hungry
According to the nonprofit organization Bread for the World, it will require every church in the country to give $50,000 each to make up for the money to be cut from food programs by the Romney/Ryan budget. Whose church is ready to step up?

Crying wolf
Republican critics of the president are like the boy who cried wolf. They’ve spent so much time and energy nitpicking the slightest things, distorting facts and trying to make President Obama sound sinister, that if he actually did commit some great evil, no one would listen to their screeches about it.
The latest faux outrage is over the death of our Libyan ambassador and his colleagues. Don’t get me wrong, it was a terrible, terrible thing. But before the dust even settled (as Vice President Joe Biden schooled Sen. Paul Ryan), Mitt Romney was on TV trying to blame it on Obama. This, despite the fact that Republicans had cut security funds for Libya.
The attack took place in the midst of Muslim outrage over an anti-Muslim film. In that context, it would have been remiss to not consider that as a possible factor in the Libyan attack. Romney himself thought that was why the embassy was attacked. Context matters.
So President Obama has failed to bring peace to the Middle East? Pray tell, what president ever succeeded?
President Bush turned almost the whole world against us. President Obama’s foreign policy has restored our standing in the world. But God forbid the Republicans give him credit for anything.
Here are the most important facts about our foreign policy: Under President Bush, 3,000 Americans were killed by al-Qaida on American soil. Under President Obama, 4 Americans were killed in Libya. Which event shows weakness? And which do Republicans prefer?

Facts omitted
This letter is in reference to the Sept. 18 letter “Facts.” Here are a few facts omitted:
Fact: Gas was $1.79 when Bush left office and now is almost $4.
Fact: Our debt is now over $16 trillion. We print or borrow 43 cents of every dollar we spend.
Fact: Yes, children can remain on their parents’ insurance until they are 26. Is it because young people cannot find a job and therefore cannot afford health care?
Fact: President Obama said he would cut the deficit in half in his first term.
Fact: He also whispered to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev that he would have “more flexibility” in his second term.
Fact: Unemployment has continued to be high the past four years. North Carolina has the 6th highest unemployment.
Fact: 43 million people are on food stamps.
Fact: Some people want to rid this country of God and anything to do with Christianity. God’s Word will always stand.

Presidents and wealth
Forty-nine years ago on Nov. 22, our American president John F. Kennedy was assassinated. President Kennedy did not take his salary while he was president. Kennedy and Sen. John Kerry were both decorated war veterans.
It took President Obama years to pay off his student loan. He has some wealth, but he first took the low road to help others rather than being a big corporate lawyer.
George H.W. Bush bought George W. Bush his Ivy League education. Their money helped George W. Bush buy his eight years as president.
We were supposed to bow down to Bush. At a wealthy fund-raising charity event, he said, “This is an impressive crowd — the haves and the have-mores.” Another slap in the face.
I pass by these shacks with Romney/Ryan posters. Would Mitt Romney actually speak to the people who live there if he came through town?
I never thought it, but I am now the 47 percent Romney is slapping in the face.

Sum It Up
The Sum It Up question from Sunday was: Do you think North Carolina’s overwhelming approval of “the marriage amendment” in May will be a harbinger of the November election results?

It might affect it in some way with people voting their religion, rather than who they really like. Peer pressure?
WILLIAM SAMS

Yes, and that saddens me. I believe that both are signs of a deep desire to “get back to the way things were.” We cannot do that. We cannot repeat either the successes or the failures of the past.
But we can embrace values we have learned from the past — compassion, fairness, justice and mercy — and seek to apply them faithfully to the future.
I believe some of the greatest presidents of the United States — Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy — have embodied the best of this tradition. I hope we will follow in their train, embrace the future, and welcome opportunities to do what is best for all the people of our homeland.
S. CURTIS PATTERSON

I don't think the marriage amendment vote is an indicator of the election because there was a good deal of bipartisan support for the amendment that will not cross over to the presidential election.
KEN HOGLUND

Our approval of 'the marriage amendment' should be a harbinger of the November election result, but it won't because race will supersede faith.
W. P. EVANS

No, race was not a factor in May but will be a factor on Nov. 6.

  1. If you plan to vote for Obama, and he is elected. Do you really expect the next four years to be better for you and the U.S. economically?

  2. Left over from last night regarding early voting.

My daughter has received at least two mailings from the the N. C. Republican Party (1506 Hillsborough St Raleigh, NC 27605) with instructions on how to vote early and she has received several robo calls too.

I would not normally even look at these things, but she requests that I periodically send her her political and my political mail.

So during this campaign process, I have discovered who actually reads this stuff the people who run political campaigns. She likes getting her grandmother's too. Each one is critiqued for font, format, writing style, content aesthetic qualities, spelling or grammar errors.

I often wonder why she gets this stuff. Is it because she has proven record of voting absentee or because the NC Republican party thinks she might be one of those unemployed college graduates living at home in her parent's basement. After reading the instructions for requesting an absentee ballot, I believe they are intentionally deceptive so maybe the mailings are an attempt to get her to request absentee ballot using incomplete information which would result it a failure for her to secure a ballot. In any case, she won't be voting in NC this election.

    1. I've said all along we've got corruption throughout our electoral process. We need voter I.D. laws and more. The Democrats are doing their best to continue the corruption, by stopping them. After all, they want to get their candidates elected no matter what. They could care less how it happens.

  10. Republican Sen. Scott Brown is apologizing for suggesting Democratic rival Elizabeth Warren used paid actors in political ads defending her legal work in an asbestos lawsuit.
The Taunton Daily Gazette reported that Brown was asked how Warren got family members of asbestos victims to appear in her ads.
"A lot of them are paid," Brown said during the event. "We hear that maybe they pay actors. Listen, you can get surrogates and go out and say your thing. We have regular people in our commercials. No one is paid. They are regular folks that reach out to us and say she is full of it."
    Warren immediately condemned the remarks.
"Scott Brown calling asbestos victims who have lost loved ones paid actors is a new low. Shameful," Warren tweeted.
Brown's campaign quickly issued a statement from Brown apologizing for the remarks.
"It was wrong for me to have jumped to those conclusions and I apologize to those I offended," Brown said Wednesday.

    LTE 1: Endorsement

LTE 2: The vast majority of churches have small congregations that can barely afford a fulltime staff let alone donate $50k to charity. Like it or not, the fed govt is in the best position by far to redirect funds towards those locales in the greatest need.

LTE 3: "They’ve spent so much time and energy nitpicking the slightest things, distorting facts..." - that's just typical political crap that you see every day of the year and it happens on both sides. That's just one reason I can't stand politics.

LTE 4: 1) Gas was at $1.79 because the economy had fallen off the cliff and global demand had reduced significantly. Gas prices are highly volatile and dependent on supply/demand which changes sharply.
    2) Which has been accumulated over 236 years, mostly in the last 30 due to reduced tax rates that have not kept up with the demands of an advanced 300+MM country.
    3) It is not unusual for young people to be in school until 26 or working at min wage jobs while trying to find their way in life.
    4) So? Crap happens. Have you always followed through on every single thing you've ever said you were ever going to do? Candidates' promises should always be taken with a grain of salt. You don't know what you're dealing with until you get into office.
    5) So? Anyway, Obama will still be dealing with a deadlocked Congress, so he won't have as much flexibility as he thinks.
    6) The nation was losing nearly a million jobs a month after the RE bubble burst. Once Obama's policies went into effect, the losses stopped, and the jobs started to return. The R's won in 2010 in NC based on bringing back jobs, but they haven't done squat becasue they have been too focused on legislating personal issues that are none of the govt's business.
    7) Would you rather have 43 million people starve to death?
    8) What does that have to do with anything? Religion is a private matter and none of the govt's concern. Unless the 1st amendment is changed, people in the US will always be free to worship as they please. The US govt, likewise, will always remain secular. This is not a theocracy.

LTE 5: When you're born into wealth and influence, it is difficult to understand what it means to have to struggle to get anywhere. I do admire the Kennedy family for their efforts in trying to help the underdogs of society through programs like the Special Olympics(EKS) and the Peace Corps(JFK) even though they could easily sit back and enjoy their trust funds.

Sum it up: Nah. You're talking about an emotionally charged issue in a primary vote which is comprised mostly of TB's vs. a presidential race between 2 candidates that neither side are excited about in a general election.

    2. It doesn't matter which party is doing the voter/election fraud, it's still wrong.

The point is-most of the obstruction to the implementation of new voter fraud laws are coming from the Democrats, and the Obama DOJ.

The reason the Democrats are objecting to stricter laws on voter fraud, is because they are fearful that they will lose elections if the elections are conducted fairly. That to me, infers that they know there is corruption, and as such, indicates culpability in the present, corrupted electoral process

As for the prison, I hope whoever wins will either have these cutthroats tried or cut 'em loose. 10 years' limbo reflects poorly on the US.
