Winston-Salem Journal LTE TU 10/02/12

One voice for many
I am but one voice, but I know there are many who feel the same way I do.
American is our home, America is our country. Let us put aside standing behind a party because we have always done so.
It’s time to think with our hearts in regard to what is happening to the land of the free. This is a matter of great importance. President Obama has tried and failed. His record speaks for itself.
It’s like a huge train running off the tracks and heading for a high cliff. We need a new president to get the train back on the tracks and moving in a safe direction.
I feel in my heart that God in his wisdom has placed Mitt Romney before us for this purpose.
Remember this when you go to the polls to vote. Use common sense and search your heart to do what is best for America.

Let our veterans down
I am frustrated, obsessed and downright angry that once again, we have let our veterans down by voting against the recent Bill S3457 Veterans Job Corp Act (“Roll call,” Sept. 23).
Unemployment among veterans is now up to 11 percent and there are between 130,000 and 200,000 veterans homeless in America on any given night. This number will be rising as more veterans come home from Iraq and Afghanistan.
This bill was for job creation for veterans, not a handout! With Republicans ranting about people depending on government assistance, it is hypocritical to vote against a program that will surely add to those needing food stamps, housing assistance, etc.
Sen. Richard Burr's reasoning for voting against this bill is that it will only create temporary jobs. Ask any veteran coming home if they want a temporary job or no job. The answer is quite obvious. Ironically, Bill S3457, introduced by Patty Murray (D. Washington) included all of Burr's ideas for the bill.
Whether Republican or Democrat, this is a bipartisan issue. We as Americans need to take care of the people who are taking care of us. If we ask our young men and women to volunteer to go to war, how then can we not develop as many programs as possible to help them reenter civilian life?

God blesses people
In a day in which most news articles are about crime or politics, it was such an inspiration to read the story about Ernest Hargrove's family reunion, “The stuff of dreams” (Sept. 27). It is refreshing to be reminded that God still blesses people with dreams and places other people in a position to see those dreams become reality.
Thank you, Sharon Stacy of Monarch for being “God's hands extended” and thank you, special correspondent Carl Crothers, for sharing this story with us.
God is good and he is faithful!

Regaining wealth
Very interesting, the AP story “Americans regaining their lost wealth” (Sept. 21).
According to a Federal Reserve report, “gains in stock and home equity since the last quarter ended likely have raised household wealth to within 5 percent of its peak before the recession.”
Also, “Tumbling home and stock prices during the recession cost Americans nearly one-fourth of their wealth. From a prerecession peak of $67.4 trillion in the fall of 2007, household wealth plummeted to $51.2 trillion in early 2009. As of the April-June quarter, it had climbed back to $62.7 trillion.”
So the economy, on Wall Street and Main Street, has improved quite a bit these last three years.
But that’s not what they say on Fox News.

  1. #1-The White Horse Prophecy of Joseph Smith Jr. will be fulfilled.

#2-Yes it would add to deficit, and so does each passing day when another 10,000 boomers turn 65. The great wealth transfer from young to old continues even for those who placed their lives on the line for our country.

#3-Didn't read article, but it is refreshing to realize that there are many who focus on life rather than politics.

#4-My stock portfolio has recovered. Realestate holdings are still problematic.

#5-Agree that voters should evaluate candidates for which they are voting and not just vote R or D.

    1. #5 If people did that, there is no way Obama would be reelected.

  2. LTE #1 - If Mitt Romney is the best that god can come up with, it’s time for god to find another line of work.

LTE #2 – The war hawks are always quick to send our troops into battle and slow to help them afterward. Hypocrites all.

Richard Burr is one of the worst…a pitiful Pope puppet.

The worst moment was in 1932, when Gen. Douglas “I Shall Return” MacArthur sent tanks, commanded by another pompous jackass, George Patton, and cavalry against World War I veterans on the National Mall in Washington.

    Thanks for your service…now disappear.

LTE #4 – “But that’s not what they say on Fox news.”

    That’s why it’s called FoxLies.

LTE #5 – Indeed, qualifications matter. Here is Mitt Romney on his qualifications: “I don't know what I said, but I stand by it, whatever it was.”

    VOTE ROMNEY/RYAN ON NOVEMBER 6

I did not see letter #5 above, but it is in the print version.

  4. Ms. Obamaphone is smart enough and wealthy enough to get herself a FREE Obamaphone, but she's not smart enough or wealthy enough to get herself a voter I.D., rules a PA judge.

    1. The correct decision. Changing the voting rules so close to election time is absurd and infringes on the Constitutional right to vote. Voting is a protected right, owning a cell phone is not.

    2. The PA law was passed six months ago. What do we have to do? Pass it this century, so that it can go in effect the next?

We use a government identification for practically everything these days. It's outrageous that we allow people to vote without one, particularly given that we have over 11 million people here illegally.

So no, it was not the correct decision.

Rush loves 'unions', and their members. He probably hangs out with these types of people, that's why he gets away with all of his absurd political rhetoric without being challenged.

  5. If a $16 trillion debt wasn't enough for taxpayers to lose sleep over, the Obama administration has offered to pick up the check -- at taxpayer expense -- for legal costs associated with defense industry layoffs should automatic Pentagon cuts be triggered.

    1. Naturally, it's against the law for Obama to do that. It's called the WARN law.

Obama don't follow no stinkin laws, you know dat?

  6. Hey Rush, you know how I like to look out for ya, don't you?

Let's go over all the 'help' I've provided to you recently:

    1) I've tried to encourage you to get more exercise,
    2) I've tried to encourage you to stay on your psychotrophic drug regement, and
    3) I tried to encourage you to utilize 'common sense' in your evaluations of political figures. (Note: Of course, we all know that is like peeing the wind.)

Strangely, or by pure luck on your part, I came across this 'shindig' advertisement in a Peddler Newspaper while out for lunch. The 'shindig' is going to be this Saturday over at the Kannapolis Moose Lodge at 660 Beatty Ford Rd. in China Grove, N.C.

And guess what they're going to have during the 'shindig'? You're going to love this Rush. It's right up your...uh, you know. They are going to have a 'Corn Hole Tournament'! I don't know exactly what all is involved, but I'll bet you do. It certainly sounds like something you'd be good at, or certainly know about.

I definitely think you should go, and enter. Who knows, you might win the whole 'corn cob'.

Good luck, if you decide to go, and compete.

    1. Not at all surprising that Dunce's vast ignorance covers Corn Hole tournaments. The UNC-G Police department just held one last week as a fund raiser for the Special Olympics.

Corn hole (so called because a bag or sack of corn was tossed through a hole in a board) is one of the oldest American games, probably invented by American Indians and soon adopted by the earliest settlers.

Read all about it: Corn Hole

Also not surprising that Dunce's filthy little "mind" is once again swimming in the sewer. Just imagine how ecstatic his ex-wife must feel getting up every morning knowing that she will never see him again.

  7. Good afternoon folks!
LTE 1: I'm sure there are many who do feel the same way, and I'm equally sure there are many who disagree. In today's automated world where results are often obtained instantly, it's easy to forget that on occasions there are problems that do not get resolved within a short period of time. A financial collapse that nearly took down the entire banking system is one of those occasions. I'm not sure what criteria Ms. Byrd is using to judge Obama's presidency as a failure, but looking at a similar situation from the 1930's, it could be a lot worse. Common sense tells me that going back to using the policies that got us into this mess in the first place is not the way to go.

LTE 2: I share Ms. Britt's bewilderment and disappointment over the failure of this bill to pass. This should have been a no-brainer. If the idiots in Congress can't even agree on this bill, how are they possibly going to do anything to address the major issues coming very shortly such as the ending of the Bush tax cuts and the automatic spending cuts?

LTE 3: It was a very heartwarming story. Nice change of pace from all of the nasty political crap.

LTE 4: Just updated my portfolio for the month of Sept on Sunday, and I'm at an all time high. I can see where those who keep all of their holdings in bank CD's or savings accounts which are yielding ~1% are unhappy, but that's the nature of saving and investing. I don't watch Fox News, so I have no idea what they are reporting.

LTE 5: Sounds like the LTE is promoting researching the candidates instead of automatically circling beside the R or D (what a concept!). Wish all races were non-partisan so it would force voters to do at least a minimum amount of checking on those candidates they intend to vote for. Voting for someone simply because of the D or R beside the name is just laziness.

    1. Many economists are predicting another depression if Obama is reelected, and all of the Bush tax cuts are not renewed.

You should be on top of this stuff dotnet. This stuff is right down your alley. That way, when your portfolio takes a dump after you vote for Obama, along with a million other people's, you won't be surprised.
