Winston-Salem Journal LTE's SU 08/21/11

And Sum It Up and Correspondent of the Week

Good very early AM, folks! The Journal once again promptly posts its LTE's, probably have the process automated.

Lost faith
I have really lost faith — in our government. Both parties disgust me (I'm a Libertarian) with how they use their positions to continue to play games with our lives.

The worst part about our government's decisions is that they affect the people of the country in a real way, with high unemployment, rising prices and financial instability. I can't stand the fact that several hundred of the "ruling class" are making decisions that affect millions. Why should they care about the "little people" when they will do just fine with their outrageous pensions and gold medical care?

I have been on the outside watching Democrats and Republicans destroy this country. President Bush started the massive spending with TARP, and President Obama has taken the spending to astronomical levels in just over two years. And the biggest problem is that the Journal's letter writers (as an example of how the public thinks) are still taking sides, whether they are liberal or conservative, Democrat or Republican, but the fact of the matter is that our country is being destroyed by both parties as we speak. None of these other things will make one bit of difference when we go into a depression.

We need statesmen in our government, not politicians. The president and Congress need to put the country first, party second and themselves third, not the other way around, as it is now. Can our country even be saved? God help us.

Taught a lot of things
I saw the movie "The Help" ("Hollywood outdoes itself on superb 'Help,' " Aug. 11). It reminded me that I hadn't made a recent trip to Evergreen Cemetery. My black mother, Ethel Spencer, is buried there.

What a sweet lady. She was a maid working in Ardmore in the 1950s.

She wasn't treated as harshly as those portrayed in the movie but dealt with similar issues nonetheless. I never heard her complain. I did love her chocolate pies — homemade, crust and all. And that meringue was unbelievable!

She cleaned, did the laundry, cooked lunch and ate in the kitchen while everyone else ate in the breakfast room. Funny, she ate in the kitchen but sat with the family at the funeral when the oldest of the four boys died.

When Ethel told me to get up and get ready for school, I got up and got ready for school. In fact, I remember a lot of things she taught me, including the fact that all people are equal. She taught me that in spite of the realities of being black, being a maid and living in the segregation era. In fact, integration didn't really change her life that much.

But there was so much good, she didn't have to change. Oh, I need to mention that I'm white, 63 years old, and I was the youngest of the four boys.

I love you, Ethel. I'll see you one day at the river on that glorious side.

Correctly identified
In his Aug. 11 column ("For GOPers, there's only one problem: Obama"), Leonard Pitts states, in so many words, that President Obama's opponents are against him not so much for his policies and actions but for the simple fact of who he is. As if to prove the point, right beside Pitts' column we have Cal Thomas (George Bush's No. 1 water boy) trying to blame Obama and "free-spending Democrats" for our nation's economic ills. Thomas may not remember that he once praised George Bush's tax cuts as well as his tax rebates; actions that Time magazine ("Where the Current $14.3 Trillion Debt Comes From," Aug. 15) says added $1.7 trillion to our public debt.

I mention this because I believe that in order to solve a problem it has to be correctly identified; one must understand how it came about. It appears to me that Cal Thomas and most of the Republicans are incapable of recognizing that they could be part of the problem.

If Thomas did not know that these tax cuts and rebates would have to be paid for with borrowed money, then he was ignorant. If he did know and continues to bash Obama while praising Bush, then he is a hypocrite. Neither position is very helpful.

Truly amazing
It is very evident the dislike the Journal has for Rep. Virginia Foxx. Just look at the Aug. 13 headline: "Foxx' chief of staff faces charges." The article goes on to describe Todd Poole's arrest on suspicion of drunken driving according to court records.

Yes, this was the only front-page news the Journal could find to print. But wait, on page A7 there was a small article: "Intern at Journal charged with DWI." You mean your own employee did not deserve the same recognition as Todd Poole (chief of staff)? The intern really must feel slighted that you chose Poole over her. Are they the only two people who were charged with DWI in the area?

If those are the best headlines the editor can find to print, maybe there needs to be a change in the headline department.

Sum It Up:
Is our country better off than it was when President Obama took office in January 2009?

Correspondent of the Week
A multitude of lessons
One-hundred forty-six years ago, we in North Carolina had laws that said we could own another human being, and we lost a war over it.
Ninety-one years ago, we had laws that barred a woman from being able to vote, and we refused to ratify that right until 1971, dragging our feet for 51 years.
Eighty-two years ago, we passed a law that for 45 years let the state forcibly sterilize humans, ostensibly because they had low IQs.
Forty-seven years ago, Congress had to pass a special measure seven years after the 1957 Civil Rights Act because we still had laws that barred African-Americans from voting.
Today, despite having a multitude of lessons from the past, North Carolinians are once again contemplating creating a special, restrictive law against a class of people based on what they are. In 40 years, will it once again take another special measure from Congress to force us to give homosexuals the same rights as other humans, or will we realize that "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" applies to every single person and not just the ones we like? Given our track record, I can't say I have much hope.

  1. Robert Weatherman: It's refreshing to see that some people are still amazed so easily. The papers in Greensboro, Charlotte, Asheville, Raleigh, Wilmington, and Greenville, even the AP must really, really, really dislike Foxx, because they too carried an article about her chief of staff, a public servant who is supposed to represent the entire 5th disctrict, but not even one mention of the intern at the Journal. Remember "Corporations are people too, my friend." And people have opinions. Amazing stuff, huh?

  2. Stab....good morning. It's obvious that the Journal is pushing Democrats and hating on Republicans as usual. Its staff has been doing the same thing for several years now. Once the older memebers of the Journal left, they cut the new 'bucks' loose, literally.

Now it's a daily campaign for the Democrats. That's why you see the Journal representatives at convenience and grocery stores trying to 'give' away their paper.

Some people get the article about Foxx's chief of staff so confused that they think Foxx was arrested for DUI.

It's amazing how the Journal thinks it should be able to pick our governmental representatives. I, like many other people, no longer subscribe to the Journal. It's liberal Democratic trash.

  4. people around here are "amazed" so easily. Breaking News: Newspapers have always taken a political slant. Newspapers were formed as the voice of political parties and supporters of specific candidates. Before there was a GPO, newspapers were awarded govt printing contracts based on their support of the winning candidate. Ever hear of Horace Greeley, James Gordon Bennett, Henry Jarvis Raymond?

  18. GOP lawmakers are so virulently anti-tax, surely they will fight to prevent a payroll tax increase on virtually every wage-earner starting Jan. 1, right?

    Apparently not.

Many of the same Republicans who fought hammer-and-tong to keep the George W. Bush-era income tax cuts from expiring on schedule are now saying a different "temporary" tax cut should end as planned. By their own definition, that amounts to a tax increase.
    ...
The tax break extension they oppose is sought by President Barack Obama.

  21. The country is in shambles, well of course it is. For over 200 years we've had old white heteros running it. Although, prior to his presidency Buchanan(the only president not to marry) lived for 15 years with William Rufus King the Senator of Alabama. The closeness of the relationship was regarded as unusual during those times and Andrew Jackson even referred to the two as “Miss Nancy” and “Aunt Fancy." Lincoln also shared a bed with Joshua Speed for 4 years, but that really was not unusual in those days.

  22. Bucky, the country is in a crisis, but President Obama is not the only one governing. We don't have a spending problem, we don't have a revenue problem, what we have is an obstinance problem. If it were not for the intractability, we could solve these problems.

  23. Good PM, Bob, WW, Bucky!

LTE1: I don't believe we are sufficiently imperiled as to be concerned about being saved. We need to reorient ourselves. I believe that will come to be in some rickety way.

LTE2: Ethel sounds wonderful. I have a kindred spirit to Ethel who helps care for Dad. She is an angel.

LTE3: We have identified problems. Our problem is identifying solutions, understanding that they are unpalatable, and implementing them.

LTE4: It is news when a Congressperson's chief of staff got busted for DWI.

To Bucky: "The Journal" has had a Democratic bent for years. In times past, it acknowledged its editorial page partisanship. Bob's comments about newspapers being founded to further political agendae is correct.

As for subscribing to the "Journal," I do. I use the "Journal'" materials for online entertainment and edification. Only fair that I pay for it.

Sum It Up: We're slightly better off in some ways, slightly worse off in others. This question begs others? Could we be worse off? Yep. Better off? Possibly. Could an R Prez have done a better job? Depends on which one. McCain? I thought so at the time. The real question is what do we do from hereon to make things better.

COTW: I agree with this LTE.

  24. Bobby....Bobby.......and I thought better of you. I never thought you'd start with the if we only had a.............person.

We've got a black man and retribution and socialism is getting a little too expensive.

And we've also got a woman, and compassion is also getting too expensive.

What do you want next? A gay man that thinks the badend is the correct end? I think not.

Let's get back to the basics. We've experimented like everybody wanted to do, and see where it's gotten us?

  30. re: Pastor accused of rape

'Most neighbors on the quiet cul-de-sac where Richardson lived in a neat yellow house refused to talk last week. But Mary Milligan, who lives two doors away, came to Richardson's defense.

"I don't believe any of this. I have never had a problem with him. He's kind. He's a member of this community. He mows the neighbors' lawns. I am just blown away by all these accusations," she said.'

It seems that this kind of statement is a requirement in any major criminal case. Do people actually believe the old Dick Tracy Crime Stopper's Textbook, that told us we could identify criminals by their shifty or beady eyes, or some other physical attribute?

I'm still waiting for the neighbor who says "Well, yeah, he had fangs and smelly breath and hairy palms...I knew he was going to do something like this."

You don't really know anyone, not even the person you sleep with at night.

If he is convicted, maybe they will let him mow the prison lawn. He can certainly keep on preaching in prison, because the ACLU won that right for all prison inmates.

  31. Good evening, folks!

Bucky, your comments border on racism, misogyny, and trollery. They do not border on homophobia, as they are homophobic. Your comments reflect poorly on your intelligence.

A number of white heterosexual Presidents have been bad ones. We have had two good black Secretaries of State, one of whom is a woman, and the other was a good Joint Chiefs Chairman.

President Obama is not an experiment. He was elected by a sizable majority by voters who sought change and who were angry with Obama's predecessor. Whether most of those voters like the changes that have occurred is debatable, but whether that will be revealed next year is uncertain. The majority of current R candidates is an ax-grinding clown show.

  38. Bucky Boy's assertion that James Buchanan was the worst president cannot go unchallenged. He served from 1857-1861, probably the most difficult period in American history, when the nation was on a certain course to civil war. Buchanan was not a great president, but he had the right idea, which he spent his entire time in office trying to implement, to find a compromise that would prevent secession of the southern states.

That he failed is not his fault...I doubt if any other president would have succeeded in a season of national lunacy. And during his administration, his Democratic party committed political suicide by dividing into three parts, thus becoming essentially irrelevant for half a century. He played no role in that mistake.

In the 1840s, Buchanan was offered an appointment to the US Supreme Court. He turned it down because he felt an obligation to complete other national business for which he was responsible. I imagine he may have regretted that decision in later years.

If you want to find the worst US president, you need look no farther than Warren Harding, the biggest hetero stud ever to occupy the White House. During his 4 years in office, he allowed his cabinet members to carry out the biggest rape of national assets ever, including the monumental Teapot Dome operation.

He took no interest in any of that because he was busy most weekends participating in orgies a couple of blocks from the White House in which he attempted to "know", in the biblical sense, as many imported New York showgirls as possible. He made our more recent studs, JFK and Bill Clinton, look like amateur dabblers.

Other candidates for the worst title include Harding's immediate successors, Calvin Coolidge and Herbert Hoover, whose policies, or rather lack of same, contributed to the onset of the Great Depression.

And then there is the recent administration of Dick Cheney and his puppet, which left us with two expensive unwinnable wars and the second biggest economic disaster in American history.

Buchanan was a failure, but considering the times, anyone else would have been too.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I guess I should also mention that Harding's party house, known as the Little Green House on K Street, was the part-time home of his Attorney General, who spent much time there with his boyfriend in connubial homosexual bliss. The boyfriend, Jess Smith, was in charge of organizing the weekend orgies. During the week, he hosted meetings of the corrupt cabinet.

The house was demolished in the 1940s and is now the site of the 12 story Commonwealth Building.

  41. O.T. to be fair, Bucky didn't assert that Buchanan was the worst president, I did. Harding, Hoover, Pierce, Fillmore, A. Johnson and Bush all are in the bottom 8 and probably interchangeable. In 2000, a c-span survey of historians ranked A. Johnson as worst, in 2009, Buchanan and Johnson switched places in c-span second survey. I could go with Harding as easily as Buchanan.
