Winston-Salem Journal LTE FR 07/27/12

A devastating impact
I am a retired principal of both Brunson and Wiley middle schools over a span of 32 years. The proposed football stadium bordering Hanes Park would have a devastating impact on the park, Wiley School and the surrounding area.
  • Several thousand cars cannot park anywhere near that field, no matter what the Reynolds High School booster club implies.
  • The $3 million outlay and the ongoing maintenance of the stadium are expenses the school system should not undertake at this time.
  • A gym/field house for the stadium could not serve as Wiley's gymnasium as well — nor should it. There is a reason that sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders are given their own buildings and facilities during this fragile time of their development. Wiley should retain its own renovated gym.
The quality of education at Wiley School would only be further degraded by this football stadium. Its presence would not enhance a child's experience there. Perhaps the return of the Highly Academically Gifted program to Wiley would improve the numbers of students applying and the achievement scores. But a football stadium would not.
The proposed stadium would be a crime against nature — literally. If the boosters must have their own stadium, let them find another location. The green space needs to remain green for Wiley School and for the community.

Misquoted?
Surely Maya Angelou was misquoted when she said, "I don't want to see five more Trayvons and five Travettes get killed by police who've been waiting for that chance" ("Angelou at town hall with Martin's family," July 26). Somehow I pictured our policemen as strapping on bullet-proof vests every day to keep from being killed, not lurking behind every bush just waiting for a black teenager they can shoot.
As tragic as the killing of Trayvon Martin was, it was not done by the police. I do hope to find that Maya Angelou did not say that. It is a disgraceful remark, and it certainly is not conciliatory. It is unworthy of a woman of her stature.

Kitten abuse
It was so appalling to me to read of young children left home alone without adult supervision committing such a crime ("Kitten attacked by children euthanized," July 19). Yes, crime. These children begin this behavior when they are bored and form "gangs" in their neighborhoods.
This boy who caused the abuse of this defenseless kitten shows no signs of empathy, which should be a warning sign to the citizens of Thomasville. I truly see a future sociopath. Punishment must be enforced.

Sum It Up
The Sum It Up question from Sunday was: Is it possible for a third major political party to rise in America today?

* * * * *

It already has. It's called ... the libertarian Tea Party. It is just masquerading under the Republican Party at the present.

DAVID STOCKMEISTER

* * * * *

Yes, indeed, given the excesses and unfairness of the other two, I vote Libertarian. Need I say more?

WILLIAM SAMS

* * * * *

I have a better idea. How about a no-party system? Washington is more concerned about what is good for its parties than what is good for America.

DARRELL DAVIS

* * * * *

No. Political systems like ours, which is an overly long-term, single-member, district-plurality system, never have more than two parties. In contrast, a system based on districts and pluralities with proportional representation will usually have four or even more parties.
Simply put; we have the wrong system for more than two parties.

KAM BENFIELD

* * * * *

With pathetic non-voters and voter apathy reigning, no.

LLOYD V. EVANS II

* * * * *

Yes, but only if they could come up with the billions of dollars it would take to compete with the other two.

    LTE 1: Valid (dare I say wise?) points from Mr. Wise...particularly regarding the parking situation.

    LTE 2: I do believe the word "wannabes" should have followed the word "police" in Ms. Angelou's statement.

    LTE 3: I'm not sure punishment is enough in this case. Some serious therapy is also in order for any child who shows such little regard for life.

    Sum it up: Interesting question for a change. I'm in total agreement with Mr. Davis about having no political parties. Mr. Benfield, as usual, makes a very interesting and astute observation. The growing number of voters declaring themselves independent suggests a number of people don't believe either party represents their views, which to me suggests this is a prime time for founding a 3rd party if one is to begin. It would take some very prominent and respected politicians who can form a coalition of the disenfranchised and who are backed by some extremely wealthy individuals to pull this off.

    1. As always...more "trivial mistakes" from Dunce World.

      Federal gun laws forbid sales of firearms to anyone who has

      1. Been committed to a mental institution or
      2. Been found mentally defective by a judge

      Some states add bans for those under the care of a psychiatric professional. Colorado and other gun nut states do not.

      Since neither #1 nor #2 above apply to Holmes, his purchases were perfectly legal, as were the 14 gun purchases of the latest Florida sissy boy.

      One wonders what it is like to sit around all day making up lies, which reminds me of Dunce's other recent lie about a local Chick-Fil-A being "really crowded", as if he would know what that means.

      Chick-Fil-A "restaurants" are owned by local franchisees, many of whom are furious with the chief Chick-Fil-A dunce for his foolish comments which will almost certainly damage their livelihood.

      The local owner reports that business has not yet taken a sharp drop, but that it is most certainly not booming either. More made up bullshit from Dunce World.

    2. Chick-fil-A had a line of cars waiting in the drive through lane, and it had an abundance of customers waiting to order inside.

      It was busier than any other time I've ever been in the restaurant.

      These radical gay activists think the whole world revolves around them. I can assure you, and your thick liberal friends, Rush, it does not.

      Just put it in perspective, N.C. voted overwhelmingly to prohibit gay marriage. Why wouldn't North Carolinians support a business that supports traditional marriage. But again, I'm using 'logic' Rush. Something you know nothing about.

    3. Hmm...typical Dunce response. The main subject of the post that he was responding to was his ignorant statement about Holmes' gun purchases being illegal under Federal law. But since he was totally wrong about that, he ignores the main subject and reverts to the meaningless second part about Chick-Fil-A, knowing that we cannot disprove his statement, even though we know that it is just another of his long stream of lies.

      BTW, the report from the local Chick-Fil-A owner in that comment comes straight from the horses mouth, because the owner is a friend and sometime client of mine.

      For the Dunce to use the term "logic" in reference to himself is like using the term "genius" in reference to Michelle Bachmann.

    1. Greer is currently in the middle of a civil case against the party concerning a dispute over his severance agreement.

      He is also “facing felony corruption charges and has an interest in scorning his party,” according to Salon.

      Tisk...Tisk Bob. You're getting more like Rush everyday. And I used to respect you.

    2. I just provided the article, no judgement. Lol, it's bad enough that the former chairman of the FL GOP is facing felony corruption charges. I don't think I would be pointing to that fact as any vindication. hehehe

    3. Bob, it would be nice if you'd read your own references.

      Don't feel bad though. Half the stuff Rush puts up is liberally manipulated numbers. When you take a real look at his data, it's mostly hogwash.

    4. after all, George Zimmerman is facing 2nd degree murder charges, does that make what he says less credible? they are both facing serious charges, does that mean that neither should be believed?

    5. Zimmerman's statements are coorborated by physical evidence and witnesses. That makes a difference Bob.

      He'll be railroad though. You and the rest the liberal world will be happy about that. His use of deadly force was justified based on what I know about the case up to this point, however.

    6. Yes sir, the former chairman of the Florida GOP is facing FELONY corruption charges. why am I not surprised.

    8. Surely Maya Angelou was misquoted when she said, "I don't want to see five more Trayvons and five Travettes get killed by police who've been waiting for that chance" ("Angelou at town hall with Martin's family," July 26.

      Ms. Poindexter

      Sadly, she probably wasn't misquoted. Apparently, she's joined the 'race baiting' crowd.

      Gotta get out the vote in 2012 you know. Otherwise, we might get a president that knows what he's doing.

  20. "Zimmerman's statements are coorborated by physical evidence and witnesses."

    More fantasy from Dunce World.

    1. The only "witness" who actually claims to have seen anything said that they saw a person in a white shirt on top of another person. Since neither Killer nor Martin was wearing anything close to a white shirt, that "witness" is irrelevant.

    2. Zimmerman had a couple of superficial cuts on the back of his head. If Martin had been "pounding" his head onto a concrete sidewalk, the wounds would have been much more severe. The police don't believe that statement, nor does anyone else except those living in Dunce World. Certainly, those of us who have served in combat zones and seen hundreds of real wounds know better.

    3. The most damning physical evidence is the final resting position of the body, which was nearly double body length from the nearest sidewalk, as shown in the crime scene photos. For Martin to wind up there, he would have had to have leaped about eight feet through the air after being shot, which even Killer has not been stupid enough to claim happened so far. Who knows what his latest story will be in front of a jury?

    #2 above reminds me that the other day Dunce claimed to have been in a combat zone. Now that is laughable. The only combat zone that he has ever been in is the El Gato Negro bar in Curacao. Hard to imagine our tightly wound Dunce shaking his booty in that place, but he knows what goes on there from personal experience and the rest of us do not.

    1. Yeah, I know. And O.J. was innocent too.

      It's pretty obvious that Rush has never seen anybody with different types of real trauma. People die from injuries that leave almost no external wounds everyday.

      Keep digging Rush. That way we won't have to dig your hole when it's your time.

      It's amazing that such a pathetic dope actually thinks he's smart too!!!??????

    2. and anyone also knows that due to the vast number of blood vessels near the surface on the skull that even small cuts bleed profusely and can be difficult to stop. Also any person with 1/2 a brain (of course we are talking about cops here) would take a person beaten to within an inch of diapers to the emergency room where a medical professional could diagnose and treat the individual. Anyone with 1/4 of a brain knows that if your charged with murder it's best not to go on national TV and make statements which are contradictory to earlier statements and can be held against you in a court of law. Zimmerman and Romney may be innocent, but both have done everything within their own power to look guilty. "I wouldn't change a thing, it was God's will." If that's the case, then perhaps God should be on trial too as a co-conspirator.
