Duty not suspended
Some months ago, a neighbor called to alert me that rescue units were at the home of my 87-year-old mother. It seems that her Life Alert had summoned emergency assistance, but no one would answer her door. Fearing the worst, first responders were prepared to break in but needed a police officer present.
The nearest officer was Kernersville Police Chief Ken Gamble, who responded about the time we arrived with the key. Upon searching the home, it was discovered that both my mother and her car were gone. Concerned that she was in distress in her car, Chief Gamble alerted both the Kernersville Police Department and the Winston-Salem Police Department. Thankfully, it was a false alarm.
Why do I tell this story? Law-enforcement officers are sworn to protect and serve the public. That duty is not suspended when one becomes a police chief.
You may criticize Chief Gamble by whatever standard you like ("Chief should leave policing to officers," July 18). However, for me and my family, we are glad Ken Gamble has not forgotten his first duty as a law-enforcement officer.

Doing the same
I really liked Nigel Alston's July 14 column, "One soon-to-be 10-year-old, doing what he can," the story of the young boy turning 10 who is collecting food for those in need. My philosophy is to do the same. We may not be as wealthy as people running for office, but we have enough to get by on. Let's join together to help those who really need things such as food. Please think about it.

Obamacare
Republicans in Congress must stop Obamacare!
If it goes into full implementation in 2014, it will be so effective that people will love it. And no one will ever forget that the Republicans were dead-set against it. It will be a crowning achievement for the Democratic Party.
Expect more and more desperate measures and lies from the Republicans. They have everything to lose.

Puzzling questions
Why are the same people who promote abortion on demand also demanding the end of the death penalty? Fetuses, by anyone's definition, are innocent of everything, while people on death row are almost always guilty.
Why isn't plastic surgery taxed under Obamacare like tanning beds are? The government could collect billions from beautiful people like House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and her actor pals while leaving alone the pale rednecks who tan. Wait a second … I just answered my own question.
When and why did liberals drop their 1960s mantra of "Don't trust the government" for today's mantra of "I trust the government implicitly." Personally, when I was a young, long-haired, bearded, semi-liberal in the 1970s, I followed the old mantra. Now that I am a old, short-haired, bearded conservative, I still do.
Who will volunteer to save the world from global warming by leaving the planet, one way or the other? That's the ultimate solution global-warming fanatics dream about — massive departures from Earth of humans so there is less need for cars, airplanes and electric power plants.
Where is the national news media apology to the diverse families making up the tea parties, which it accused of being violent and racist? Why is the same accusation not levied against Occupy Wall Street, which is violent and racist?

Voter ID laws
Prepare for unintended consequences.
If the Republicans succeed in their attempts to disenfranchise minority voters via voter ID laws, and if they win more offices as a result, they'll have to deal with the fact that many people will consider their rule to be illegitimate.
You can't suppress the vote and then claim that you won by majority vote.

LTE #4...Puzzling Questions
ReplyDeleteWhy are people on death row that are almost guilty? Why are people who are against choice also against food stamps when 1 and 4 children in American need them? Why did Bristol Palin have plastic surgery? Why do pale rednecks tan? "That's the ultimate solution global-warming fanatics dream about" Why is that to be blunt just plain stupid? "Why is the same accusation not levied against Occupy Wall Street, which is violent and racist?" Why don't you watch Fox and you wouldn't be asking that question?
What do you call Mount Jefferson?
LTE #5 Voter ID laws
ReplyDeleteThank you Wendy!! Why do citizens need an ID to vote, when felons, non-citizens, and people here illegally can go to gun shows and buy guns and go online with no id to buy ammo?
That's not true Bob. You do have to have I.D. to buy ammo online. You just don't have to have a photo I.D., just like you don't have to have a photo I.D. to vote in some states. Thanks to Democrats.
DeleteGood morning Bob. Did you enjoy that little trip you sent me on last night?
DeleteSo much for tolerance and diversity, right?
all you need is a credit card and answer yes to the following:
DeleteAffidavit of Customer
I am not an unlawful user or addicted to any controlled substance.
By selling or delivering ammunition to me, BulkAmmo.com is not violating any state or local law or ordinance.
I have never been and I am not expected to be convicted in any court of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence.
I am not under indictment for and have never been convicted in any court of a crime punishable by imprisonment for over one year.
I am not a fugitive from justice.
I am currently not subject to a restraining order of any kind.
I have not been adjudicated as a mental defective and I have not been committed to any mental institution.
I am not an illegal or unlawful alien.
I have never been and I am not expected to be discharged from the Armed Forces under dishonorable conditions.
I am not currently less than twenty-one (21) years old.
I have not renounced my U.S. citizenship.
I wonder if they have a lie detector filter?
Bob, suck it up. You were wrong. You said you didn't need an I.D. You have to give your name and address. That's an I.D.
DeleteGeeez...! You're getting more like Rush everyday!
My name is Bucky and I live at 100 Lala land.
DeleteMy name is Gay Buck, and I live in the public library's bathroom in Winston Salem.
DeleteI'm sure you could vote with that address, why not be able to buy ammo?
Then why when someone goes to vote they cannot just give their name and address in some states, if that's an ID?
DeleteOkay Bob. I've gotta go. Have a nice day.
DeleteI don't care where you live, Gay Buck.
Deleteluego, have a nice day too.
Delete@Phargo: your question was never answered, was it?
Delete"Then why when someone goes to vote they cannot just give their name and address in some states, if that's an ID?"
No, they are seldom answered, hehehe, and I know why.
DeleteAs soon as I ask a tough question, it's always, "Well, I have to go," or some other bullshit.
DeleteThe lack of an answer is always answer enough.
DeleteWendy: Conversely, can you claim that you won the vote if you allow unqualified and illegal immigrants to vote?
ReplyDeleteI don't know why people, like yourself, would write into the Journal's LTE Section and publish such stupid comments. Yes, I do. For the same reason Rush posts them in this forum-to make sane people, go insane.
The Journal needs to hire some Fawn Halls.
Fawn Hall? What's with the 25 year-old references?
DeleteHey! Maybe Jessica Hahn and Donna Rice are up to no good too!
or Peggy Eaton.
DeleteMaria Reynolds also comes to mind.
DeleteDon't forget Liz Ray, who Wayne Hays hired as a secretary in his Congressional office so she could be his mistress.
DeleteWhen the story came out, Liz told reporters "I can't type, I can't file, I can't even answer the phone."
She was from Marshall, in the legendary Madison County, NC, where a lot of dead people, both Democrats and Republicans, were voting regularly in the 1940s and 1950s.
I hope Arthur realizes the importance of this election. It will probably have more impact on his life than any that will come.

The Obama Administration sold thousands of weapons to people that transported them to Mexican drug traffickers (Fast and Furious). Where's your outrage over that fiasco, Bob?
DeleteI am outraged over fast and furious and operation wide receiver.
DeleteI would really like to know who came up the idea originally in 2006 and who approved it.
DeleteWide Receiver was conceived in the Phoenix office of the ATF. All succeeding operations have been run through that office, mostly by the same people. No one in DC has had much to do with any of it. early in the Obama administration, some people were indicted and tried, but for the most part, Issa's Sturm und drang has been the big, and the wrong, story.
DeleteAs always, when anything becomes politicized, the BS you're hearing about is just that. Anyone who wants to know what really happened can check out the Fortune magazine article below. If you are one of those who prefers ignorance and lies, just skip it. No one is interested in your ignorant opinion.

Great Article.
Delete(CNN) -- There will be no new gun laws after the Aurora shooting for the basic reason that the American people do not want them.
DeleteOver the past 20 years, support for gun control has collapsed in the United States.
ironic that Dunce chose that particular article for his cut and paste bullshit, but really not, since he only reads the headlines, due to his inability to read and comprehend the most basic longer stuff.
DeleteHere is a link to the full article. It tells the truth about guns, something that Dunce does not want to hear.
In the land of the Second Amendment, nobody will take your guns away. But if you love your children, you should get rid of them voluntarily.

Bucky-local forum purveyor of the truth
Ha, ha...the Dunce is up and at them again...nattering on about that which he knows nothing about.
DeleteThe "hellfire switch" was one of many illegal AR-14/15 attachments that allowed an AR14/15 to be fired fully auto like a machine gun. The makers of the original hellfire were put out of business by a lawsuit after one of their devices was used in a mass killing at a California law firm.
Senator Feinstein has a California CCW permit and carries a .38 caliber Smith & Wesson in her purse to "protect" herself from dunces like the Dunce. Unlike our local sissy boy CCW holders, she has extensive firearms training.
She has been consistently supported in her election campaigns by the CHP association. I'm sure that she has forgotten more about guns than the Dunce ever even thought about. Oops, sorry...used "thought" in the same sentence with "Dunce". Won't happen again.
Keep on proving how little you know about everything Duncy boy. What was the name of that Russian rifle that we should be so concerned about? Mosin.... what?
Pro-Second Amendment? The Castle Doctrine, it’s done. First pro-life legislation – abortion facility regulations – in 22 years, done. Voter ID, which is gonna allow Governor Romney to win the state of Pennsylvania, done.”

DeleteMajor banks and the financial global elite are now confirmed to have as much as $32 trillion in hidden assets stashed away in offshore accounts that are subject to little or no taxation. As a result, around $280 billion is estimated to be lost in tax revenues. In other words, the multi-trillion dollar banks and elite families are avoiding any taxation while forcing United States citizens to foot the bill.
ReplyDeleteGood afternoon folks!
ReplyDeleteLTE 1: I'm guessing this LTE is in reaction to the current troubles facing Police Chief Gamble. Gamble has served the town of K-ville honorably, however, that doesn't mean that his incident with running into the 2 apprehended men with his car should just be swept under the rug.
LTE 2: It was an inspirational article from Mr. Alston whose columns I have always enjoyed.
LTE 3: "It will be a disaster!" "It will solve all of our health car problems!" Actually, it will be neither! Like every new proposal, some parts will work well and some parts won't. As far as the impact, that is to be determined. The hyperbole on both sides will continue to grow as we get closer to elections and implementation time.
LTE 4: I'm puzzled why these strawmen questions made to a published LTE. I don't know of anyone who "promotes abortion". I do know of many who oppose the use of abortion while favoring the use of the death penalty, sending kids off to war for the slightest offense as well as cutting off all help to poor mothers. What procedures are taxed or not depends on how powerful the lobby behind them. The use of the strawman term "liberals" renders the next question irrelevant. The next set of questions concerning global warming also employ strawmen that only exists in Mr. Johnson's ideologically tainted imagination. As for the last set, numerous media outlets have acknowledged the violence displayed at various Occupy protests. Mr. Johnson must not have been paying attention.
LTE 5: It will be interesting to see what law suits arise if legitimate voters are prevented from voting in a very close election.
Speaking of powerful lobbies:
DeleteLobbying works
Hey, I know lobbying works now, because you have put spaces between your paragraphs.
DeleteIt'll also be interesting to see how many illegals and unqualified individuals vote if anybody takes the time to investigate.
Who knows? Gay Buck over at the WS Public Library may vote.
DeleteThere is no "WS Public Library". There is a "Forsyth County Public Library".
Delete10 branches, including Central, crammed to the ceiling with the knowledge of the ages.
Too bad Dunce didn't spend more time there as a child. He might have risen from his natural level of "idiot", the lowest (IQ 0-25), to "imbecile" (IQ 26-50), even "moron" (IQ 51-70). Who knows? Probably too late now...you know, old dogs and new tricks.
The only tricks that he is interested in now are those turned by the boyos down in the ABCs.
