Simple proof
About the letter "Understand the conditions" (July 11): The writer is entitled to his opinion about whether we should pass a bond referendum. But the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school board cares about the students and teachers, and the simple proof is that it's working hard to provide them with more resources. For the letter writer to say that they "are not concerned about anyone but their 'little kingdom' " is out of line. Unless he has sat down with a school board member and discussed the budget, his conclusions are based on ignorance. That's the opposite of education.
He wonders where the money will be spent. Again, if he had asked any of the school board members about that, I'm sure they would have explained it to him.

Unjust lack of penalty
I was appalled by the article ("Woman gets little penalty for starving dog to death," June 28) revealing the unjust lack of real penalty for Angelanetta Gladden's apparently deliberate abuse of her dog. The dog should not have been chained in her yard to begin with, and depriving it of food and water was unconscionable as well as illegal.
If she knew to call animal control for help in removing the dog after it died, then it seems she should have known to call for help in caring for or placing the dog. Animal control could have referred her to a humane society or rescue group.
There are laws against animal abuse, and for good reason. Why does Judge Todd Burke feel he need not punish an offender more? Are there mitigating circumstances not mentioned in the newspaper?
Telling Gladden to volunteer at the Humane Society is absurd; is she to learn compassion in two days of mopping floors or filling water bowls? Ridiculous. She should never, ever be allowed access to another animal of any kind.
And Burke should be ashamed of the part he played in this tale of cruelty and judicial ineptness.

Where are they?
As I watch TV I see a lot of anti-smoking commercials. They have people who lost loved ones due to cancer, wives crying, showing their children having to grow up without their dad, a person holding something to their throat so they can talk. It's not that I don't feel for these people, but I would like to know where are the commercials about the people killed by drunken drivers? They would show the grieving parents of a lost child killed due to a drunk driver or a person lying in the hospital bed with a diseased liver, dying. Where are these commercials?
They took commercials about smoking off the air many years ago. They've still got drinking commercials on the TV by the dozens. On any given day, you can see beer or liquor ads on TV, especially around any sports that are being broadcast. These commercials have as much or more influence than any of the smoking ads did on our young people.
Why can't they take all the drinking commercials off the air? Big Government would be my answer.

Absolute power
The British statesman Lord Acton made a famous statement: "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely."
My thinking is that the goal of the Republican Party is to control the political process in America through a power grab.
Why do so many millionaires and extreme wealthy continue to pour millions of dollars into the Republican campaign? May I suggest that the plan is to control and dominate the democratic process. There is a fear that if President Obama is re-elected, the wealthy will face a tax increase. The Republican Party plan, as I see it, is to take complete control of the White House, the Congress, the statehouses and the local courthouses. Should this happen, the balance of power will be out of kilter and democracy as we know it will be in serious trouble.
From Day One, the goal of the Republicans in Congress has been to defeat President Obama at all costs; even if it means sacrificing the well being of America. Why else would there be such gridlock?
Many Republicans would rather the United States of America go down the tubes than to accept a black man as president; and a Democrat at that. To me, this is un-American. As Americans who love this country, we must not allow this to happen.
Let's send a message to Speaker of the House John Boehner, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor: We will not be a nation corrupted by absolute power.

Arpaio has to be the biggest publicity hound I have ever encountered. If his name isn't in the Arizona Republic for more than 2 weeks, he will do or say something outrageous (or more likely just plain stupid) just to get the attention he thinks he deserves. This is nothing more than another cry for attention.

ReplyDeleteRomney Camp Calls Obama Taking Bain Donations 'Height of Hypocrisy'
ReplyDeletelol, So what you're saying, Romney Camp, is that even Romney's former business associates are backing the president? too funny. This is the worst political campaign I have ever witnessed and it started with the triumphal return to his birthplace and a major speech at Ford Field, cap. 65,000, to 1200 businessmen in the infield. Etch-a-sketch, retroactive retirement...he surrounds himself with lousy advisers. Here's a man who wants us to trust him to revamp the tax code but doesn't want to show us his tax returns. I wonder how many years HE asks for from his VP candidates? Truth is he grew up in a culture of secrecy, the Mormon Church, where the men do go to quiet rooms behind close doors to talk about important business, religious, social and other matters. He may be a great businessman, a very good father, and really good grandfather, a church leader, and patriot, but he is not a good politician.
If he were a lawyer he would be a "better" politician?
Deleteno, being a lawyer has nothing to do with being a good politician
DeleteHe really comes across as someone who is out of his comfort zone when campaigning. He appears uncomfortable and it really starts with those tight jeans he wears. Watch, when he walks, he does so as if he had a wedgie. He's constantly standing with his hands in his pockets. These are superficial and not substantive in any way, but subliminally important.
Deleteit doesn't mean who couldn't make a great president
Deletethat is him alright, he has no politician's ear. Sometimes great campaigners make poor presidents and vice versa. Romney also has a problem in that his comfort level is "in the squish zone". A predicament of being a northeastern blue state moderate in a center right nation.
DeleteThe liberal media is in an all out assault on Romney. They hope they can knock his political legs out from under him before any real issues get discussed.
DeleteSome people have wondered where our country would be had Jimmy Carter got reelected. I have a feeling we're about to find out.
Religious Israeli lawmaker tears up New Testament. Armageddon, we're almost there. Let's see we have a head of the Mormon Church which believes the United States is the promised land and the nation of religious universal "manifest destiny" being backed by the world's wealthiest Zionist to take command of the world's last remaining superpower! And to what end? No good, I tell you. No Good.
ReplyDeleteEmails have surfaced showing Sheldon Adelson personally directed funds of $700,000 directly to one Chinese official which they detailed as “expenses” despite two general counsel members telling him that it would be in violation of federal law. Those two lawyers were fired and the $700k found it’s way to the Chinese official. Coincidentally – Billionaire Sheldon Adelson received approval for his Macau casino off the coast of China.
ReplyDeleteIf the President is re-elected, I hope the Justice Dept. pursues this case vigorously. If you shoot at the king, you best not miss.

I imagine the Mormon Church owns profitable properties like malls all over the world where their youth can proselytize. World Casino and mall moguls unite?, take over world's only remaining Superpower?, the red and black horses of hazardous consumption in charge of the world's greatest military? Good afternoon folks!
ReplyDeleteLTE 1: I would think the school board would be in a better position to know what the building needs of the school system are than the average Joe. The article on the requested school bonds included a breakdown of the costs if the original author would have simply read the article instead of just glancing at the byline.
LTE 2: One more on the unfortunate plight of poor Diamond.
LTE 3: Actually the answer is something more powerful than Big Goverment: Big Corporation who makes Big Donations. The other point to be made is that drinking in moderation (which alcohol ads promote) is actually healthy whereas any amount of smoking is decidedly unhealthy.
LTE 4: Actually, the goal of all political parties is to "control the political process ... through a power grab". Whether "D", "R", Whig, Bull Moose, No Nothing, or what have you; all of them want to control all 3 branches of govt. Of course, one of the best ways to accomplish this is to try to ensure the failure of the opposing party even if it means bringing harm to many Americans in the process. Washington was right to be opposed to the formation of politcal parties. They are concerned about what's good for them and their supporters rather than what's best for the country as a whole. This is why I want to see the end of gerry-mandered districts and have all elections become non-partisan.
Earlier quote:
ReplyDelete"They hope they can knock his political legs out from under him before any real issues get discussed."
Yes, Mitty has been eager to discuss the "issues". Here is what he has said on important matters and what he will do about them so far:
The economy: "______________________"
Taxes: "_______________________"
Education: "_____________________"
The Middle East: "_______________________"
Energy & environment: "______________________"
He has promised that he will repeal ACA, a program nearly identical to the one that he pushed through in Massachusetts (flip/flop...flip/flop), but of course, the President cannot "repeal" anything.
Oh, and he is in favor of dogs riding on top of cars.
If you watch the video of the Florida shooting, you will see the public nightmare of fools carrying concealed weapons.
ReplyDeleteThe geezer fires at least 7 shots at point blank range, hitting only twice, only one real hit. Where did the other 5 or more rounds go? Fortunately, no innocent bystanders were hit. Glad I wasn't there.
Taking such risks over money is always insane.
Yeah, I know. He should have waited until they killed four or five people for the 'fun' of it, and then started shooting.
DeleteYou're a moron Rush!
I'm glad you weren't there too Rush. You'd have just gotten in the way of the criminals running out the door.
DeletePathetic!
The chance of anyone being killed in any particular armed robbery is .006549%.
DeleteOnce some fool fires the first shot, that rises about 100x. The average amount taken in an armed robbery is around $1,000, hardly an amount to risk anyone's life over.
That is why sane people don't want fools like the Dunce or the geezer down in Florida walking around armed.
“I think he is wonderful. If he wouldn’t have been there, there could have been some innocent people shot,” Palms Internet Cafe patron and shooting witness Mary Beach told the Ocala News.
DeleteAs always, irrelevant.

ReplyDeleteZimmerman will be on Hannity tonight. Why don't you listen to only guy that really knows what happened?
DeleteI've never said Zimmerman or his wife were smart. I've said the facts indicate to me that Zimmerman was justified in using deadly force against Martin.
That should be interesting. Only a fool would go on a TV show when they are going to be tried for a serious crime.
DeleteWonder which version of his story he will tell...did Martin "appear out of nowhere" (after all, an FBI agent said she saw angels guarding the crash sight of flight 93) or "emerge from the darkness" (which did not exist) or "jump out of the bushes" (which weren't there), or will he have a new story? Tune in to see.
Since a lot of fools, and you know about them first hand don't you, are trying to try the case in the media, he has little choice but to go on TV.
DeleteLet's hear what he has to say. I'll bet he makes more sense than you do most of the time.
Poor Dunce...he doesn't know the most elementary things about anything.
DeleteAll high profile cases are tried in the media. Almost no defendants are ever stupid enough to go on TV and talk about the case, because every word that Killer says on TV can be used against him in court.
If his lawyer has OKed this appearance, he should be disbarred for incompetence. If he hasn't, he should resign in protest.
Yeah, I can tell you've tried a lot cases, based on your expansive knowledge of the law.
DeleteIf you're a real lawyer, you should be disbarred for just being plain ignorant.

"Why can't they take all the drinking commercials off the air? Big Government would be my answer."
ReplyDeleteWe used to get a lot of this kind of letter in the Journal. Thank goodness, now they are much rarer.
Interesting...Big Government prevents us from removing alcohol commercials from the air? Hmmm...
Speaking of Big Government, that is what the Democrats do isn't it?
And it's true...the number of Federal employees peaked at about 6.6 million under LBJ. As soon as Nixon got in, the numbers began to fall until the next Democrat, Carter came in, then they began to rise again, except they didn't, they just kept on falling. They did not begin to rise again until Reagan took office.
Well, that cannot be, because Reagan was a "small government" Republican, so how could the number of Federal employees possibly increase by over 10% during his term? Did somebody say that he also raised taxes several times and significantly increased the deficit as well?
Hey, shut up about that...he was the Great Reagan, no matter what you say!
Well, we can be sure that the number increased sharply when the spendthrift Democrat Clinton took office. What's that? That isn't possible. The number of Federal employees decreased by 20% during Clinton's term?
Next thing you know, you'll be telling me that Clinton eliminated deficit spending and balanced the budget.
Somebody's lying around here.
Let's skip forward to present day, Rush.
DeleteEmployees: The number of federal employees grew by 123,000, or 6.2%, under President Obama, according to the White House's Office of Management and Budget.
Spending: Government spending as a share of the economy has hovered around 24% during the Obama administration, several percentage points higher than under President Bush.
Regulations: There were 75 major regulations adopted in Obama's first two years in office, compared to 120 during Bush's entire term.
So blow your liberal nonsense up somebody else's loose gluteal muscles, because any 'thinking' and 'knowledgeable' person knows you're full of it.
As always, Dunce, since he is fundamentally unable to actually read and understand even the most simple prose, simply cuts and pastes whatever bullshit seems to agree with his foolish "ideas".
DeleteOf course, he is hopeless...unless Dr. Atala can figure out how to do a brain transplant, or, in Dunce's case, an implant, since there is nothing to "trans" from. But for others who might like to know, I include the link below as a fair assessment of current conditions in DC:

ReplyDeleteOh Goodie! It's now being discovered that illegal immigrants are learning to 'fly', yes that's right, fly airplanes in the U.S. And guess what? At one school, the illegal immigrants are learning to fly from an illegal immigrant instructor!
A little more than one illegal alien flight instructor…try at least 11 at just one school.
Anglo-American Aviation in San Diego trained 2 of the 9/11 highjackers. Their license was revoked by the FAA, but they ignored that and continued to operate.
Between 2001 and 2008 they hired at least 11 illegal aliens as instructors. In the summer of 2007 alone, they issued over 100 student visas to pilot trainees.
All of this occurred during the CheneyBush administration, while the Bushites were assuring us that we were "safe" because of the great job they were doing looking after us.
In November, 2010, Boston police stopped a car for a traffic violation and discovered that the driver was an illegal alien. Turns out that he owned T.J. Aviation Flight Academy. A few days later he and 33 of his students, all Brazilians, were arrested. Turns out that they had been exploiting for years the same poorly written and implemented Bushite regulations.
When the Bushites founded the TSA, they estimated that it would require 16,500 employees. Today 62,000 people work for TSA. The nearly 4,000 employees at its DC headquarters earn an average salary of $103,852/year.
The total cost of the TSA since 9/11 has been over $60 billion, yet there have been over 25,000 known security breaches. They have found some guns, at a cost of about $6 million per gun. Not one of them belonged to a terrorist.
The TSA has also cost American citizens trillions of hours of time wasted waiting in security lines and a drastically reduced choice of flights because of increased costs to airlines per flight.
And many Americans, like me, have quit flying at all because of the cost, inconvenience and, because some of us, especially combat veterans, don't like being treated like criminals in our own country. That alone is estimated to cost the airlines $1-2 billion per year.
If you feel "safer" because of any of this, you are one of those suckers born every minute, a line often credited to P.T. Barnum, who almost certainly never said it. Just one more case of hucksterism in the good old USA.
That's real nice Rush.
DeleteHas the Obama Administration stopped illegals from learning to fly in the U.S.? No, in fact, there was recent testimony to that effect on Capitol Hill. That's where I learned about it.
I don't know who you're used to talking to Rush, but they must be complete morons for them to let you get away with your absurd comments.
