Winston-Salem Journal LTE SA 07/14/12

No sustainable program
Why, of course Americans love "Obamatax." Of course we want to grant IRS agents and Health and Human Services bureaucrats explicit oversight of our health care. And of course we want health care that emulates the British National Health Service, under which dental and medical care are customarily rationed and standard cancer treatments are systematically denied.
Given the fiscal status of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid — they're underfunded by trillions — it defies reason to believe that Obamacare will be a fiscally sustainable program, much less deliver improved health care, lower medical costs and boost the economy.
Frankly, many Americans are sick of bloated bureaucracy, out-of-control spending, massive debt, expanding taxation (beginning in 2013), unsecure borders and selective enforcement of the laws. We deplore the president's habitual disregard for the Constitution; we reject his feeble view of our nation's history and character; and we oppose his left-leaning vision for America's future.
Speaking on July 1 on ABC's "This Week," Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., crystallized America's options:
"This election is a choice of two futures. Do you want a government-centered society in a government-driven economy and government-rationed health care? Or do you want the American opportunity society with a safety net, a free economy, economic freedom, personal liberty? That's what we want. That's the American idea. We have one more chance as a people to get that back, and that chance is going to come on November the 6th."

Another candidate
In response to the July 1 letter "Help with problem," the writer was concerned with being a racist or an uninformed Southern redneck, based on whom he voted for. He is neither. The reason he thinks along these lines is because there are no quality candidates to choose from.
Alan Keyes, Vernon Robinson and Herman Cain are decent choices, if you have no one left to vote for.
Same in the presidential election. No President Obama or Mitt Romney for me. I need someone who represents me, as the others certainly don't. That's why I'm voting for the only logical choice, the Libertarian candidate, former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson. Go, Gary!

A compelling public interest
The Journal is to be commended for its persistent and powerful advocacy for compensation for the victims of North Carolina's involuntary sterilization program. Nevertheless, I am compelled to remind the Journal 's editors and readers that this program was part of the eugenics movement of the early 20th century and the darling of the "progressives" of that era. Progressivism was and is based on the naïve confidence that an elite oligarchy of academics, bureaucrats and politicians have the wisdom and insight to use the power of the state to coerce the rest of us to live as they think we ought for our own good. All too often, this newspaper promotes that view and champions its causes.
The other day I was in a discussion with a friend who describes himself as a "progressive" and "collectivist"; he was hard-pressed to imagine any infringement of individual rights or liberties that could not be justified by "a compelling public interest." Progressives of the early 20th century were convinced that improving the gene pool was a compelling public interest; they gave us the forced-sterilization programs.
Wouldn't it be better to have a government that concerned itself only with securing our inalienable rights, like life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? Our own happiness, that is, not that of the state and its minions. I daresay that the victims of the progressives' sterilization programs would have been happier had the state just left them alone.
Wouldn't we all?

Naturalization ceremony
What a treat it was to be in Old Salem on Independence Day for the awarding of U.S. citizenship to 60 individuals from 38 countries ("America's newest citizens celebrate Fourth of July," July 8). They came from Canada, El Salvador, Sudan, Saint Vincent, Israel, Togo and on and on to join in with a country that offers freedom.
It was an honor to be with so many new fellow citizens who followed the proper protocol and are now able to enjoy the benefits and share the burdens of living in a free society. We have so much to be thankful for. God has indeed already blessed America.

  2. Naturalization ceremony. It was nice to see some folks become Americans the right way. Rare that anyone follows the law today. These folks are welcome and needed. Sure beats just being needed because you are only useful.

  3. A compelling public interest. It is odd about "progressivism". Suggests a movement "Forward" but is only a movement backward because of a complete ignorance of recent world history under the rubric of "this time it's different" because it is "us" doing it now. These people are so convinced of their moral superiority that they think that by simply existing in their "new ideas", all is ok because they believe it. These folks are so uniquely qualified to organize human society that an opposing idea represents "evil". These people are equally qualified to pick up a turd by the "clean end" as well. No difference because "this time it's different".

  5. No sustainable program. You are right. It is not meant to be "sustainable". One way or another, the collectivist is going to fill out his dance card with one last gasp of a New Deal program and that is what Obamacare is about...a means to an end. THEN we can chose a future course when all their Statist "dreams" have died from malnutrition.

  7. Disgusting or normal, our soldiers are dying to protect it in Afghanistan: The source is South Florida Gay News.com, but it makes many references to Fox covering the topic. (Something for everyone on the forum)

To answer your question from yesterday Bucky yes, people have been peering into outhouses for centuries.

An unclassified study from a military research unit in southern Afghanistan, released earlier this year, details how homosexual behavior is unusually common among men in the large ethnic group known as Pashtuns—though they seem to be in complete denial about it.

The study, obtained by Fox News, found that Pashtun men commonly have sex with other men, admire other men physically, have sexual relationships with boys and shun women both socially and sexually—yet they completely reject the label of “homosexual.”

    1. Re outhouses:

My grandfather always had a two seater...each compartment had a window so that we might contemplate the beauties of nature whilst carrying on our business. But because there were often boys about with a proclivity for peeping, each window had a nice little shade that could be pulled down when necessary.

Having been twice in my youth press ganged onto the crew for digging a new hole for the outhouse, I think that indoor plumbing is one of the better developments in human history.

    2. Ever hear of pranksters moving an outhouse?

      Delete
    3. Ha, ha! The outhouses at Raven's Knob were originally just wooden boxes with a seat set over a hole.

One cold night, an unpopular bully went out for a late visit. The other guys in his patrol jammed the door shut and carried the outhouse down a steep hill and left it in the woods.

Unable to open the door, the bully tried to crawl out through the "seat" but got stuck. His piteous cries eventually attracted the attention of an assistant Scoutmaster and he was rescued.

You won't believe this, but during the interrogation that followed, every single Scout said that he was sound asleep the whole time and never saw or heard a thing. Isn't that amazing?

  8. ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) - The state of Alaska sued the Obama administration on Friday to block environmental regulations that would require ships sailing in southern Alaska waters to use low-sulfur fuel.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Anchorage, challenges the new federal regulations, which require the use of low-sulfur fuel for large marine vessels such as cargo and cruise ships.

  9. A vote in November for anyone other than the candidates of the two major parties is nothing more than a protest vote. I used to make a protest vote now and then until I was involved in a municipal election that was decided by one vote. The candidates were well separated on the political spectrum and that one vote turned out to be a disaster for the municipality.

There is an interesting matter in the same vein now in process in Wilkes County. In politics, you never know how important your vote might be.

After the polls closed on May 8 in North Wilkesboro, the unofficial results of the school board race showed Coleen Bush leading Rickey Lankford by four votes, 5,620-5,616 for the last spot on the board.

But the election board had to certify a number of provisional and absentee ballots. After that was done, Lankford had taken a three vote lead over Bush, 5,652-5,649.

Bush called for a recount. After the recount, Lankford’s lead had shrunk to one, 5,653-5,652, so the election board was about to certify Lankford the winner when a new problem cropped up.

Under North Carolina law, if a person will turn 18 by the date of the general election, they are allowed to vote in the primary for that election. Two 17 year olds voted in North Wilkesboro on May 8. They should have been given a special ballot with primary candidates only. Instead, they were given the full ballot, which included the school board race. There is no way to tell for whom their two illegal votes were cast, so the problem has been turned over to the state board.

The state board has three choices. They can refuse to do anything and tell the Wilkes board to resolve the problem. Or, they can order a second election between Lankford and Bush. Or they can order that the entire school board election be done over.

The folks in Wilkes County are waiting.

Earlier someone said that naturalization was "rare". I don't think that an average of 766,000 naturalizations a year qualifies for "rare"...that's close to the population of the Southeast's largest city, Jacksonville, and more than #2 Charlotte and #3 Memphis.

    1. Ah yes. the Vagabond Saints Society, the revival of the Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Last week, for Heavy Rebel Weekender, we had the amazing rockabilly band Kelly and the Cowboys. And coming up, the highlights of the season, West End Mambo on Aug 4 and Holy Ghost Tent Revival the next week. As we say, if you don't dance to West End Mambo, you are already dead…no dancer I, this applies to me as well…I may look like a fool but it can't be helped once that Cuban son rhythm gets cooking, and the ladies do like anybody who will dance with them.

And speaking of cooking, my library friend and I were down there earlier…probably just missed you…but encountered some naive young women…40s/50s set…and lured them away on the pretense of a pizza crust cookoff…my friends legendary Roman thin crust against their bulkier Sicilian style.

Of course, our real goal is to seduce them into some stimulating conversation, or, failing that, a high stakes game of poker or hearts, since they all make way more money than we do.

As we await their arrival, my windows are open and we can hear both the Vagabond Saints and the roar of engines from Bowman Gray Stadium. Our crust is already rising.

Wordly, you should read Charles Darwin's opinion on homosexuality if you haven't already.

I'll save Wordly the trouble. Here is the full text of what Darwin said about homosexuality:

    "__________"

I expressed surprise the other day when Dunce claimed that he had a friend. Silly me, how could I have forgotten that the revered political leader, public intellectual and scientist Nathan Tabor lives around here.

Of course, he and his fellow dunce are "friends", if you know what I mean ;) ;) ...they are like two peas in a pod, closeted gay wannabes united by their joint universal ignorance and propensity to make up their own facts as they go along.

You can read one of Tabor's most riveting and influential essays here:

Profunditites from the Heights of Mt. Tabor

Awesome, is it not? Almost as if being in the presence of dog...I mean, god.

While there, please note the impressive list of towering intellectuals in the sidebar. Sample some of their brilliance as well and you will see the rich sources tapped by our in-house intellectual giant for his copy and paste style of commenting.

Also note the style of the "RenewAmerica" website, the patriotic images intended to let you know, just in case you don't get it, that they are the only "true" patriots...never mind that they have no idea who is portrayed in these images, much less what they were thinking about and debating.

I'm sure that Darwin would be surprised at what he said as interpreted by this confederacy of dunces.

    1. Darwin wrote extensively about 'natural selection'. His opinion was that people with deviant and weak DNA will be naturally deselected out of the gene pool.

Since homosexuals can't 'naturally' reproduce through their forms of sex, they should be eliminated over time through 'natural selection'.

We are still waiting to see if that will happen.
