Winston-Salem Journal LTE MO 07/30/12

Deeply saddened
As I read my newspaper on July 19, I can't describe in words the emotions I felt as I read "Kitten attacked by children euthanized." As an animal lover, I am deeply saddened at the thought of what this small, defenseless kitten suffered through. My condolences go out to the kitten's family (human and feline). In my wildest dreams, I could not imagine losing a pet in this manner.
I truly hope these children realize the magnitude of their actions and this never happens again. I cannot decide on a punishment to fit this crime.

A misunderstanding
There is definitely a misconnect by wealthy Republicans who think middle-class Democrats are jealous of their wealth and therefore want them to be punished and pay more taxes. President Obama's plan to raise their taxes by allowing the Bush tax cuts to expire is more about fairness and having the wealthy pay an equal or greater percentage than those earning considerably less.
Shouldn't the wealthy "job creators" pay at least their fair share of taxes, as do those who work for them? We are not jealous.

Harming many
When the few can harm the many so easily, there needs to be better regulation ("Gunman's motive unclear in Colo. attack," July 21). Automatic weapons are made to kill people and provide a thrill — those two things should not be linked together in a civilized world.
I've been working with the public on a quasi-social basis for decades, and I can tell you there are a few in every large gathering who are potentially dangerous and should never have access to weapons. Can anyone tell me why they are available to the public in the first place?
I think the Second Amendment gives us the right to have local militia; not to turn our country into an armed camp where everyone is a potential killer. Then we would revert to a kill-or-be-killed mindset, which is a self-fulfilling way of thinking.
Does the right to bear arms include automatic weapons, bazookas and atomic bombs?

Invalid views
The letter "A deep insight" (July 19) repeats invalid views. Raising taxes on "rich" people inhibits economic recovery? Where have they been? The fact is that businesses have failed to expand, and hiring has stagnated, despite high cash reserves and ultra-high executive incomes. Increased hiring awaits increased demand for products and services. With high unemployment, demand remains lacking. Federal deficit spending designed to get people back to work can make an important difference. Following recovery, spending can gradually be reined in, as it must. Meantime, our structural differences from the Euro countries continue to underpin U.S. command of rock-bottom interest rates. Premature cutting of financial support for the states, with consequent layoffs by cities and school systems, does more harm than good.
Moving on: The president's management of the economy has been miserable? Bear in mind that President Obama inherited this recession from the wars, tax cuts, deregulation and disastrous banking practices of the George W. Bush era.
The Obama administration's efforts to speed a turnaround, and the president's willingness to seek common ground with his opponents, have been met with a policy of persistent, uncompromising obstruction in Congress. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell declared that his top priority was to make Obama a one-term president.
The writer of "A deep insight" insinuates that the president promotes class warfare to keep his job, that he's just another unprincipled politician who'll do anything for re-election. The record suggests otherwise. Historians are likely to reach quite a different judgment.

Guns and the public
In the 2007 movie "In the Valley of Elah," at the end of the movie after Tommy Lee Jones' character finds out how his son died, he has the school-yard flag hung upside-down.
Why do we allow the NRA and the gun lobby to frustrate the will of the American people? Most gun owners and the general public agree that we need gun-control laws. Assault weapons and 90-round magazines are not for defense but for aggression.
We will never be able to identify those among us who may one day go on a killing frenzy.
The president needs to get out in front on this. Let Congress explain how it is that we need assault rifles in the hands of the general public. We need a national ban on assault weapons. Only then should we hang the flag proudly.

  1. Unemployment rates should be going down because of this, so why aren't they?

    1. The H-2a visa program, which brings migrant workers to the United States on seasonal work visas, is expensive — about $1,000 per worker on top of a guaranteed $9.70 per hour wage, housing and transportation. It also requires a hefty amount of paperwork. But farmers say it is worth it to have a reliable labor force.

  2. LTE #1 - Punishment isn't really the problem. Children who mistreat animals do not necessarily go on to become psychopaths, but almost all psychopaths mistreated animals when they were children. That is one of the questions on Dr. Robert Hare's Psychopath Check List.

The child needs to have a thorough psychiatric examination immediately.

LTE #2 & 4 - Cutting spending alone will never make a dent in the national debt. Taxes must be raised as well, and the logical place to start is at the top. The 1% did just fine, thank you, in the 1950s when the top rate was 91%.

LTE #3 & 5 - Mr. Tamer is correct in that the 2nd Amendment gives us the right to have a local militia.

When Madison was writing the Bill of Rights, he did not intend to include anything like the 2nd Amendment. But the slave states had militias to control the slaves and were afraid that militias would be outlawed in favor of a national standing army, so would not have ratified the Constitution without a guarantee that their militias could continue. That was the sole intent of the amendment.

And when Madison wrote "the right of the people" he meant that in the collective sense, as in the "people of Salem may bear arms as a part of their local militia".

Of course, thanks to the NRA/arms manufacturer alliance, we now have a godawful mess on our hands.

  5. Re Stab's comment last night about the Marine's ordering 12,000 M1911s:

I understand that these will be going mostly to Spec Ops folks, which is not surprising, since the SEALs prefer them as well...reliability, speed, accuracy second to none.

John Dillinger was one of the most knowledgeable people of his time when it came to firearms. He had his gunsmith make him a fully auto M1911 by altering the disconnect.

When our Marine instructor at Pendleton began his presentation on the M1911, he said "The syllabus requires me to tell you that the effective range of this weapon is 25 meters." He then turned and fired down range, making an ammo box hop at 100 meters. By the end of that segment of training, several of us could make that box hop as well. Probably the best handgun ever made.

  6. The White House is expected to OK federal standards in the next few weeks that will nearly double vehicle gas mileage for vehicles by 2025, as automotive dealers warn the changes could slam the recovering retail car industry because they will come with sticker prices that will keep buyers off their lots.

The recommendations call for “fleet wide” gas mileage of 54.4 miles a gallon by 2025 -- essentially the average gas mileage for cars, trucks, vans and all other vehicles in a model year.

"We are very much supportive of the family -- the biblical definition of the family unit," Cathy said…

Wonder what biblical definition of family Cathy is talking about…is it the polygamists, such as Abraham, Belshazzar, David, Esau, Gideon, Hosea, Jacob, Joash, Moses, Rehoboam, Saul, Solomon, Zedekiah and many others?

Or is he talking about the families that began when men forcibly raped virgins and made them their wives? Or maybe the men who killed their wives, their sons and daughters?

Does reading the bible make you stup[id, or is just that stupid people read the bible?

I don’t think that reading any book can make you stupid and I know too many brilliant people who have read the bible, so I suspect that the problem is that people like Cathy haven’t read the bible at all, yet think that they know what it says. Just a bunch of ignorant blowhards.

  10. Good afternoon folks!
LTE 1: Little Heaven is getting as much response as Diamond. As been mentioned already, the children involved need some psychiatric help along with punishment.

LTE 2, 4: The economy was roaring under the previous tax rates, whereas under the existing tax rates the financial sector collapsed which sent the US into a near depression from which it is struggling to recover. ~70% of US GDP is comprised of consumer spending, so when there's a high UR, the demand for goods/services is going to be sluggish as Mr. Harbury notes. Capital is required to start up and expand businesses, but demand for goods/services is what keeps companies going and determines the number of jobs needed to satisfy the demand. I also agree with Mr. Harbury that the time for govt. austerity to take place is when the economy is strong.

LTE 3,5: I was wondering when the gun letters would start trickling in. The answer to Mr. Padden's question concerning the NRA's influence should be obvious. Mucho, mucho dinero. As to why "assault" weapons are available to the public, see the answer to Mr. Padden's question. Clearly, there isn't going to be any action taken this generation. Maybe there will come a day when Americans will decide mass murder isn't an acceptable consequence for allowing everyone to have a gun regardless of sanity level...but then again maybe not.

    1. I'm in favor of a mental evaluation before someone can own a gun. And while we're at it. Let's throw in the same requirement for computer ownership. That would wipeout most of the liberals in here.

You'll never convince the fringe element of our society of that. They are convinced that it's the gun(s) fault.

  13. Stab, a couple of hours ago I had a chat with a friend who owns one of the local Chick-fil-A franchises. Some interesting info:

    1. The company is a privately held, family owned business. There are no outside directors, so no chance of getting rid of the prez.

    2. My friend owns only the franchise to do business. Chick-fil-A owns the actual facility and pays for the lease for the land that it sits on...quite different from almost any other franchise operation. He says that that is true for all of their stores.

    3. Because of this arrangement, one can get into the Chick-fil-A business for much less up front than other franchises...he says about $2 million less. But because of that, only a tiny percentage of those who apply for Chick-fil-A franchises ever get one.

    4. He wouldn't say how much he makes...actually I didn't ask directly, but I'd guess he's in the low six figures.

    5. Is he pissed at big-mouth the dunce? Oh, yeah. His business is already down sharply, say 25-30%. He cannot sustain that for long...for one thing, fears of worse developments could cause him to lose his best employees to other fast food franchises...without them, he cannot continue to operate in any reasonable fashion.

I don't remember who or where, but I recall seeing or hearing a business consultant being asked what was the most important thing for a business owner to know. She said "If a reporter asks you a question that has nothing to do with your actual business and its functions, shut up!"

Good advice gone to waste in this case.

    1. Interesting business model, but depressing news re prospects of removing Cathy. Sarah works at the CfA on Peace Haven, is now in a quandary about that, since one of the family's best friends is gay. Tough call, since that restaurant is very well run and provides a good atmosphere for people like Sarah. I am thus somewhat conflicted about doing business, since a good bit of money goes to the nitwit Cathy and family. I'll withhold for the time being. That seems to conflict me less.

    3. I don't eat fast food very often, but sometimes I go get CfA's chicken soup when I don't have time to make it myself. I will be doing that less frequently now. Maybe even go back to Campbell's. Hope Bucky picks up my slack as the employees do need their paychecks.

    4. Exactly, Phargo. Sarah shouldn't feel bad...she's got a good job, which I'm sure she does well. No employee is responsible for the politics...it's the ultimate big boss who is the jerk.

Oh, and another thing that my friend mentioned...the weird business model works extremely well. A couple of years ago, Chick-fil-A passed McDonalds to become number one in sales per store per year...hardly anyone knows that, he said.

  14. My friend sent me a link to some more info on CfA.

Once selected, a franchisee pays $5,000…that's five thousand dollars, as opposed to about $1.9 million for other major franchises like KFC and Taco Bell…up front, and he's in business.

CfA selects the location, builds the restaurant, retaining ownership, and pays most marketing costs.

I was wrong about one thing…the franchisee pays rent to CfA for the building, not the other way around.

Once the business is up and running, CfA gets 15% of sales, then splits the rest with the franchisee. Since the average store has sales of about $2.7 million/year, CfA is taking in about $1.53 million per store, plus whatever rent they charge.

If the franchisee runs an efficient operation, his net profit is about $191,000/year. Not bad for a $5,000 initial investment, especially since all CfAs operate only 6 days a week…from the beginning in1946, they have been closed on Sundays.

But if that sounds too good to be true, it is. Because the franchisee has no control over his franchise. He cannot sell it. He cannot pass it on to his heirs. When he retires or dies, the whole thing reverts to CfA and the franchising process starts over.

One of the most dramatic divorce cases in local history occurred some years ago when a friend of mine who owned most of the major franchises of a well known burger purveyor in this area and his lovely bride split up and went to court to decide how the spoils would be split up. Oh boy…megamillions at stake. They are both very nice people, but you'd never have known it as the W-S Journal daily carried the blow by blow descriptions of a very nasty heavyweight fight.

    That doesn't happen with CfA.

So say a franchisee runs a store for 40 years, which some have done, he will have earned about $7.6 million. But there is no sweat equity, no retirement benefits, so he better have taken care of that along the way. Meanwhile, CfA will have raked in a cool $61 million, plus rent, from his store. And since CfA has over 1,100 stores, they will have a total take of well over $67 billion on those stores over a 40 year period. So who's really making out here?
