mplement the act
As a former CEO and employer of hundreds of people over the last 30 years, I hope that we, as a country, now seriously begin to implement the Affordable Care Act providing universal health insurance. Over the years I have heard too many heart-wrenching stories from employees who could not afford family coverage, whose children were suffering and who could not afford medical care.
I have often seen children on private insurance and with no insurance denied services. I am also well aware that Medicaid very often provides better services to children than private insurance even while managing benefits closely.
As a country we are compassionate. Part of this compassion should include ensuring universal health care that is affordable.

Justice not served
I read with horror the column about the woman, Angelanetta Gladden, who starved her own dog to death ("Woman gets little penalty for starving dog to death," June 28). I was outraged not only by her cruelty but equally by the callous disregard for justice by Judge Todd Burke.
No jail time? No fine? Unbelievable! And then to suggest that Gladden would have to volunteer 24 hours of service to the Humane Society before she could own another animal.
Should Judge Burke remain in his position? He is more dangerous than Gladden. If the Humane Society were to allow her to enter its doors (I am sure it won't), I would suggest that the doors be locked and the premises vacated. She should never be allowed to own any animal and frankly should be in jail.
There should be a "Dogs Against Burke" campaign. How we treat our animals is a true reflection of our character, and Burke has proven to be failure in that department. Judge Burke is a disgrace to the judicial system.
Let's remember this in November.

Doom and gloom
Run for the hills! The sky is falling! According to some, if President Obama is elected to a second term, it will signal the end of our country as we know it. Really?
Let's see: Corporate profits are at record highs, the stock market routinely tops 13,000, Osama bin Laden is dead, more illegals have been deported than in the previous administration, drone strikes have decimated suspected terrorist outfits, we have job growth, and we're closing the curtain on our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Things are certainly somewhat better now than they were four years ago.
But depending on the "news" sources, it is all doom and gloom. It appears that Obama has crafted a plan to take our guns, turn us into a Third World country, drag us into socialism and rip up the Constitution.
Are we really that gullible? Or are those the things we want to believe because of hatred for our president?
Are we incapable of reason? Or do we just sit like baby birds waiting for the right-wing media to regurgitate whatever twisted, satirical theories they concoct? It's about time we use our common sense and demand real news, and vote based on the facts and not because of ideology steeped in misinformation.
Here's a little secret: If Obama wins, he plans on releasing the Kraken and Godzilla, and we'll all have to plant community gardens. How do I know? Why, I get my news from the bloggers!

Sum It Up
Are you satisfied with the performance of the North Carolina legislature?
Letters: America becomes stronger
America becomes stronger
In preparation for applying to become a naturalized citizen of the United State, I was reading the government publication "A Guide to Naturalization" around the week of July 4. I read the section about the responsibilities of citizenship with great curiosity. It states that "America becomes stronger when all of its citizens respect the different opinions, cultures, ethnic groups, and religions found in this country. Tolerance for differences is also a responsibility of citizenship."
Unfortunately, this responsibility is rarely reflected these days in the hateful and negative climate of public discourse. We need to realize that we are all, whether we are naturalized or natural-born citizens, expected to live out these words. We can do better.

Hey O.T., that empty space I was referring to on 4th is next door to King's Crab Shack, with the arched green marble facade and the two very large displays windows
ReplyDeleteAll of the buildings on the north side of the block between Trade and Cherry were built in the 1920s, except the CVS building.
DeleteThe CVS store on the corner of Fourth & Trade was originally Walgreen's, built in the early 1930s.
Next to Walgreen's, at 211 W. Fourth, where the crab house is now, was Hine's Shoes, Hosiery & Luggage, owned by Efird B. Hine.
The next building, with the green marble, was DuFour Beauty Parlor & Bobber Shop (owned by J. Hilton & Mrs. Nellie J. Fulp), where all the trendy young women went to get their hair bobbed.
Then they could go next door (where the little rounded awning is) to the Jewel Hat Shop and buy one of those helmety things from Mrs. Nancy A. Moffit.
In the 1940s, a couple of doors up, William Robin opened Robin's. For some reason, I think that that became the Buena Vista Shop. Maybe not.
Most recently, the Dufour shop was occupied by Huggins Shoe Repair. They also sold used shoes…high end like Allen Edmonds…say $300+ price range.
80,000 jobs created last month. 84,000 went on disability and social security.
ReplyDeleteGet on the dole, it's the Obama way.
As always, just like a dunce, the Dunce just copies and pastes, having no idea about what he is copying and pasting actually means.
DeleteWhat he pasted is not called "disability and social security, what ever he means by that. It is actually Supplemental Security Income.
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) was created by the Nixon administration to replace a polyglot of state programs. To be eligible, one must be 65 or over, blind or disabled, and meet certain income limits.
Dunce also has a poor grasp of scale...as in how many people join the Social Security rolls every day (10,000).
Since the baby boomers started retiring last year, and for the next 19 years or so, about 300,000 people will be going on the Social Security rolls every month.
And Social Security is most assuredly not the dole. Every one of my rich friends who are eligible are happy to receive their monthly payments.
Went to a 4th of July party last week. One of the Obama supporters there bragged how he was still on unemployment after months. He said all he had to do was 'pretend' he was trying to get a job.
DeleteGet on the Obama dole. It the new 'value' system of Americans under Obama.
That Rep. Allen West (R) from Florida is one sharp dude. He really has some brain power. He was on Fox and Friends this morning.

Democrats are on the offense over economy. Why because they know they have done nothing except spend money over the last four years.

You gotta love these liberal, Democrat voting states. They're almost broke, yet they keep spending and spending and spending. They're like the Eveready Bunny when it comes to spending.
New Obama ad out. He is telling Americans he plans to spend money 'saved' from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan since they are no longer as active.
ReplyDeleteDid he mention trying to pay down the debt with any of this 'saved' money? Hardly!
Like most liberals, he wants to continue to spend in order to get our country out of the ditch, and over the cliff.

Should Judge Burke remain in his position? He is more dangerous than Gladden.
ReplyDeleteJo Ann Mount
____________
Judge Burke is Vivian Burke's son. People know who she is. Enough said. He's been a discrace to the black robe for quite some time, not just in this decision.
LTE #1 - George Bryan recently stepped down as president and CEO of The Children's Home, Inc. Before he took over there, he was, for 25 tears, executive director of Exchange/SCAN (Stop Child Abuse Now). He is known nationally as an expert and popular speaker on child abuse. He is one of the good people.
ReplyDeleteBut I wonder if he realizes how it sounds when he says that he has been a CEO and employer of hundreds, yet "Over the years I have heard too many heart-wrenching stories from employees who could not afford family coverage, whose children were suffering and who could not afford medical care."
Well, why was his organization not taking care of its employees? Four out of five new small businesses fail in the first five years. Why?
Number one would be incompetent management, but there are others. If a retail business, the old saw about location is absolutely true. Or the business may be offering the wrong products or services. Often overlooked is the quality of the employees. You can get everything else right and still fail because of mediocre employees.
The way to attract quality employees is simple…challenge them by example; treat them well; pay them what they are worth and show your appreciation by offering them the best benefits money can buy. It is not an accident that Google, Whole Foods, Intel, American Express, General Mills, Starbucks, Microsoft and others are booming while the overall economy struggles. They are also consistently listed among the best companies to work for in the USA. I could name a number of local small businesses, from law firms to banks to bakeries, who would make that list except that they are not Fortune 500 companies.
As I well know, providing first rate health insurance for employees is expensive. But a business that says it cannot afford to protect its workers has no business being in business.
More goofy economics from the forum know-nothing-know-it-all.
DeleteThe reason the companies he listed are doing well, is because they are selling a product, at a reasonable price, that people want to buy. Not because they treat their employees well.
If we really cared about how employees are treated regarding the products we buy, we wouldn't be buying most of our products from places like China and Mexico.
I'd say 'ol Rush has been watching too much CNN and MSNBC.
Don't forget SAS in Cary. I'd give my right eyeball to work there.
DeleteYes, SAS is consistently rated as a great place to work, but not sure about the eyeball business. There are quite a few others around the state.
DeleteMy friend at the library mentioned that you were looking into a law library career. If you haven't already, you ought to look at Alston & Bird in Raleigh, another consistent winner on the NC scene.
They offer Google-like things like on-site child care, fitness center, extensive annual professional training, and, of course, the usual non-discriminatory policies.
But here is the clincher:
'Support staff at law firms are often ignored, but here they join task forces with lawyers and meet regularly to discuss operations, which the firm says "creates opportunities for all our staff members to make contributions." '
You never really know whose idea might win a close case.
Of course, there is always bad news. According to CNN, they currently have about 29,000 applicants for 10 available jobs. And their annual turnover rate is only about 8%.
But then, if you want to work for the best, those are numbers that you will always encounter.
Imagine that you are a politician, running for President of the USA, and you know that the vote is dead even. There is one voter on the fence whose vote will decide whether you or Nathan Tabor lives in the White House for the next four years. For convenience sake, let's call this decisive voter Dunce.
