Winston-Salem Journal LTE's FR 12/23/11

Withdrawal
Republican presidential candidates should call for the immediate withdrawal of our troops from Afghanistan. We have avenged 9/11 by dispatching Osama bin Laden to the land of 27 virgins and, to me, that was the main reason for going into that godforsaken country.
That whole country isn't worth the injury or death of one more American. It is far past time to declare victory and get out of that hellhole.

Human rights
Bravo to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her Geneva speech and words that especially need to be heard by all legislators in our N.C. General Assembly: "Gay rights are human rights, and human rights are gay rights."
For all who claim to be followers of Jesus, we are called to be attentive and serve the needs of those around us. I don't believe that Jesus would be in favor of our N.C. legislators who have chosen not to serve all and are discriminating against those God created different and gay.
Gay people are seven times more likely to commit suicide and to be bullied from the time they are small children through their college years. Suicide is the third-leading cause of death in 19- to 24-year-olds and the second in college students. Of all deaths in the U.S. annually, suicide accounts for 12.3 percent of all deaths among 15- to 24-year-olds.
Those who survive and contribute their many talents to society should be honored and not discriminated against, especially by those who proclaim to be Christians and are elected to office in our legislature.
It's the season of glad tidings. Shouldn't it also be the season for our legislators to have second thoughts about their discrimination against the gay community, along with all the budget cuts against citizens with mental illness? There sure needs to be an uprising of those who believe in a kind and loving God.

Love for a country
As an immigrant, a World War II veteran and a Lutheran, I am appalled at your thinking concerning the Pledge of Allegiance ("Scorecard," Dec. 10). This is not, and I emphasize not , a question of religion but a question of your love for a country that does so much for so many and especially those of us who live here.
We set the standard of what America stands for, and we should thank and praise God for who we are.
Those who live here and work here should praise America and pledge to God. Those who cannot do this should go home from whence they came.

The correct move
I read with interest your Dec. 8 editorial, "Ultimately, legislature made right move." If you would take the time to go back and research how many millions of dollars have been raided from the highway trust fund to balance the state budget and whatever else it was used for instead of its intended purpose, I believe you would find there would be ample dollars to do whatever is needed in road and bridges. The past two administrations have used it as their "go to" fund.
The House made the correct move in trying to cap the gas tax at 35 cents. Unfortunately, for whatever reason dealing with the parliamentary objection, the House delayed its final vote, which in essence is allowing for the increase. The Senate did not have the courage to even vote on it and went home early.
It appears that neither the House nor the Senate is looking out for the people paying the tax. I thought the Republicans were against tax increases. They missed the boat on this issue.
Like all taxes we pay, the more you give the government, the more it will spend.

LTE #3...My ancestors came here in the early 1600's, financed the Revolutionary War, and founded the Nazareth Lutheran Church in Rural Hall (1778) I praise America when it deserves it and don't believe in deities. I'm not going anywhere because I am home from whence I came.

  2. Ms. Annecelli,

Many of us have no problem with gay and lesbian et al receiving all legal rights of a joined union. However, we must recognize that it is not a marriage in the traditional, cultural, or normal sense. It is an 'alternative' form of human bonding that is deviant in that it is not conformative or consist with the general laws of nature.

Try as people will, it will never be accepted as a normal form of human sexual bonding.

In our efforts to be 'fair' to all, sometimes we do things that are not good for our society. Some of these efforts result in even more consternation by people. To use some people's words from yesterday's posts, you can't force patriotism. Likewise, you can't force acceptance of a certain form of sexuality.

Discussions are being conducted by public schools officials that indicate that some schools are going to 'require' that students listen to alternative sexual practices etc. in the near future. If we are allowing students to 'opt out' of the pledge of the allegiance, then surely students and parents should be able to 'opt out' of this instruction.

The suggestion that somehow others are responsible for the psychological well-being of homosexuals is preposterous. We can't control the complete mental well-being of heterosexuals, so what makes you think we can control the mental health of homosexuals. You obviously don't know too much about the gay and lesbian lifestyle, or you would know that their lives, many times, not all, revolve around other problematic forms of behavior, not just their deviant sexual practices.

We need to start treating the gay and lesbian form of human bonding as a truly different sexual orientation, which it is, and start separating homosexuals from heterosexuals in our public and private facilities where nudity is involved.

As the progressives say, our culture is constantly evolving. We need to the face facts, and that is having people of a different sexual orientation in our society, presents unique problems, which we must face utilizing a realistic approach, not a politically correct one.

  4. Bobby, this whole notion that patriotism is somehow not important is disturbing to me. If we hold no allegiance to our country, then why have it?

  5. AG Holder did 'play' the race card in his defense. Here's the link:

It's funny how liberals call people like myself racist when people like Holder cite race as an excuse for wrongdoings.

  6. Here's a good one. You can now wear a head scarf in JROTC because of Muslims' religious beliefs. I can't wait until they allow Halloween masks.

'Free' speech............? Liberals are doing their best to take it away.

  11. Good afternoon folks!
LTE 1: Actually, a timeline for withdrawal from Afghanistan has already been set by the current D President.
LTE 2: Some heartbreaking facts brought up by Ms. Annecelli. The teenage years are hard enough to go through when you are "normal" (however that's defined). When you are different in some way, everything gets magnified. Those who have a problem with homosexuality are the ones who have a problem, not gays, and should be the ones to address their fear/hatred or whatever conniption it is they have with those who are gay. I'm not one for getting into theological arguments, but when Jesus said that we are to love one another, there were no strings attached.
LTE 3: Another "love it or leave it" (sigh). There's a time to praise the US and a time to criticize it. I think you will find that those who wish to criticize the US are already "whence they came".
LTE 4: There seems to be a trend in govt accounting to throw all of the funds into a general fund instead of separating them out for dispersal to a particular category, so I'm not sure how accurate it is to say the fuel tax funds have been "raided". The state is having enough difficulties meeting its budget as it is, so further reducing revenues makes no sense to me.

  12. I would like to say that I hope everyone is having very Happy Holidays so far. Although I may disagree with some you, there is no 'hate' in my heart for anyone in here like some of you seem to possess for me.

I say 'Merry Christmas' to all. If that offends, just take it as a phrase of good will expressed by me, to all of you-even to the liberal 'haters'-Rush and LaSombra.

  13. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too my dear Bucky.

  14. "I-ull have ah buloo Chrisimas without you..."
Elvis' version is certainly unique and one of his best, I think.

It's interesting that the love it or leave it crowd are the same ones that get us into one stupid war after another...about 85,000 US KIA, 400,000 US WIA and millions of foreign civilians killed and wounded since World War II with no result.

And, as usual, Brokebuck is just full of lies. Dolly Parton's Drag Queens bit is all over Youtube. Neither Youtube nor any of the guys in the black helicopters makes changes on YouTube. All changes are made by the individual YouTube site owners.

    Paranoia is a terrible illness.

  16. Season's greetings to you as well, Stab.

Or as my friend Mary, who spends her holidays every year at the Sandbar Beach in Key West, says:

"Have a Mary Christmas and a happy nude year."

Some people have all the fun!

In the last one, Dolly explains how she entered a "Dolly Parton Drag Queen" contest and lost. There are many others at YouTube and elsewhere.

Brokebuck is simply a dumbass, and the true forum nitwit.
