Winston-Salem Journal LTE's SA 12/03/11

Political comment
In a Nov. 29 letter ("Eligible to vote"), the writer opines that the Penn State students who rioted after Joe Paterno was fired as head coach "are part of the uninformed mass that elects the inept few" and "are the type who helped elect Barack Obama."
Shame on him. His fact-less attempt to portray the scandal and its fallout as a political comment is contemptible.
Here are the reported facts: Young boys were allegedly perversely victimized for over a decade. The named alleged perpetrator — Jerry Sandusky, Penn State defensive coordinator — was given deferential treatment by authorities in an apparent attempt to protect the college's football program. By the way, both Paterno and Sandusky are registered Republicans, a very well-publicized fact that the letter-writer's campaign letter failed to mention.
We Americans should be singularly concerned with the moral failures surrounding this scandal. The letter-writer's failure to do so should chill and trouble him.

Superiority complex
After reading yet another letter in the Journal touting everything liberal as "intelligent" and everything conservative as "ignorant" ("A nightmare," Nov. 30), I feel compelled to respond. As mean-spirited as conservatives are portrayed, it pales in comparison to the superiority complex of the left. I also miss the days of old-school liberals who actually listened to people with opposing views and didn't insult their intelligence or make fun of where they live.
There are many social programs available today to help people who fall on hard times, whether it's unemployment insurance, food stamps, welfare, housing assistance, etc. Most conservatives I know would say this is a good thing for our society.
However, the increasing dependence on, expectation of, and flat-out demand for government assistance as a normal part of one's lifestyle is disturbing, to say the least. There is nothing bigoted, ignorant or mean-spirited about that point of view.
Our goal as a nation should be to get people on track to become self-reliant, not lifelong dependents of the state. Liberals used to talk about giving "a hand-up, not a "hand-out." Where have all those voices gone?

Big-hearted community
On behalf of the Matt Gfeller Memorial Doughnut Run Committee, I would like to thank our big-hearted community of Winston-Salem for its support of the third 5K race on Nov. 12. I would also like to thank the sponsors for their generous donations and support. This race would not have been possible if it were not for all the participants and donations from all of them.
More than 830 individuals registered for the event — a wonderful tribute to Matt's life and to the good work his family is doing. This year's race raised close to $30,000, which will be used for traumatic brain injury prevention, treatment and research. To learn more, visit matthewgfellerfoundation.org.

  1. Mac, you were doin' pretty good there until you said: "By the way,..." and then proceeded to make a political comment.

  2. A note to Newt: I really don't have problem with kids making a little money if they want to, but there's just something a bit Victorian about firing the "unionized" janitors and replacing them with child labor.

  3. "dramatically less expensive than unionized janitors" no he didn't lol that's a commercial.

  4. With that big rectangular face, I always though Newt was more Georgian.

  5. Oops. I mentioned the U-word. That won't get me any dougnhnuts this morning. :)

  6. Thomas A. Keshian, keep up the good work and congratulations.

  7. I look forward to a possible debate between Barack and Newt. Barack better bring an extra set of panties to that debate.

  8. Newt fires up the conservative base for sure, but he exponentially fires up the liberal base and repells independents.

  9. Anyone could look like a good debator when mixed in with that bunch.

  12. Republican "PC" :

Luntz had many prescriptions for Republicans to improve their prospects. He said they should talk about "free enterprise" rather than "capitalism," which isn't as positive a word in the minds of voters. And he said it's unwise to say the government "taxes the rich"; better to tell Americans that government "takes from the rich."

  13. "allowing women to drive in Saudi Arabia would cause rampant sex, porn and homosexuality, according to some of the country's scholars". Must be all that sand.

  14. Camels need some relief?

  15. WW - If they let them drive, next thing they will want is the right to vote. Oops, that's already a done deal, starting in 2015...and they can even run for office...but don't expect a female speaker of the house any time soon.

I hear that now they want the right to own stuff. It's getting way out of hand.

  17. Hugo Chavez came into power by class warfare. Obama is just doing the same thing. Those nasty, hateful rich people, let's take their money.

  18. The way I figure it. Barack is about 40 points down on the IQ scale to Newt. It could get ugly in a debate.

CNN, NBC, ABC, MSNBC, the New York Times, and the Winston Salem Journal will be calling Newt a racist the day after the potential debate. Mark my words.

  19. Mr. Ellis, thanks for the insightful letter. Yes, liberals 'think' they are intelligent. But even most morons know that the country is not doing well. So why don't liberals seem to realize it, and continue to praise Obama if they're so smart?

  20. I wonder why the liberal news media never told us that the Fed loaned banks $7.7 trillion?

    Amen to that one

  23. I think the 7.7 trillion came out of the audit of the Federal Reserve which if if I recall correctly is something Ron Paul pushed for in the The Dodd/Frank (yes that Frank)financial reform law.

  24. Wordly........interesting. So $7.7 trillion dollars went out the door and Obama and the Fed said shhhhhhhh! Don't tell anybody?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Nobody really knows what's in Dodd/Frank. It's like Obamacare. It's ironic that Frank, the horny homosexual, was in the middle of that bill, especially after he forced banks to make all of these questionable loans which led to the housing collapse.

It would be like giving Clinton a key to whorehouse and telling him to take care of everything.

  26. In light of what has happened recently, I think my comments are clearly justified when I expressed repeated concerns about homosexuals showering with straight people.

Here's what my idol, Barney Frank had to say about it:

  28. Jeez, the Fed's $7.7 trillion in loans was done in SECRET (that means that nobody knew about it, Dumbo), so none of the media knew about it...that includes Buckdoody's favorite liars Fox, Blaze, Rush, etc. And especially the CIA/Department of Homeland Security, who are always the last to know anything.

As soon as they found out about it, the New York Times, The Washington Post, the LA Times, the W-S Journal, PBS, NPR, NBC, ABC, CBS and the Wilkes Journal-Patriot reported it. Which liberal media did I leave out, Buckbackward?

  29. Good evening folks!

And good evening to OT, and thank you for the greeting last. Yes, it is very good to be back in the saddle, or more accurately back in the belly of the corporate beast. No more single proprietor jobs for me. My most recent single proprietor still owes me a month's pay.

Re your friends who work at menial jobs, then return to the occupation. Why? How about going home and looking for more suitable employment. The OWS point has been made, though I am unsure of what that is. And the property on which those folks squat is my property as well, and I am denied use of it, in principle.

As for my "crap-in" reference, NYC had to pressure wash the park in which the OWS folks squatted. The city of Los Angeles removed 30 tons of garbage after evicting squatters from a public area. City workers found a lot of material goods: clothes, cell phones, laptops. The place was hardly a hooverville.

I note your comparison to civil rights civil disobedience, and see an apples-to-oranges comparison. The civil rights folks had pretty well defined goals. I'm not sure how many goals the OWS crowd have voiced, other than higher taxation and taxpayer subsidized college educations. I'm very suspicious that there are unspoken goals, especially considering some of OWS' endorsers.

  30. I see that WFDD is reporting that Representative Larry Womble is in critical condition after a head-on collision. I hope he recovers fully, our disparate political stances notwithstanding.

  31. Rush...you flaming idiot. I hope you're ready to clean out Barack panties when he debates Newt.

  32. Rush....you gotta see the horny homosexual in the video above. He reminds me so much of you.

  33. Questioner: Do you think male and females should be able to shower with each other?

Frank: Oh no no no no...that would be too disruptive.

    *Not word for word......

    What a moron!

  34. Interesting about Gringrich: if I am center-right, Mrs. Stab is center-left. But, she was watching some news channel a few nights ago (she watches 'em, I don't). She remarked to me that Gringrich is the only candidate who makes sense, including President Obama, for whom she voted in 2008.

I replied that Newt is a scumbag like Willard Clinton. She said she didn't care, wanted someone who had some idea of what to do, and how to run things. I'm not carrying water for Gingrich, whom I do not like, but I wonder if perhaps other centrists may feel similarly.

I do agree with Bucky: Gringrich would best President Obama in a debate.

  35. Bob, it appears that Cain is taking his 9-9-9 and heading home, if not putting it back in his pants. One wonders why there was no clamor for Clinton to resign and take his Willard home back when his sexual predation was revealed.

    ReplyDelete
  36. By the way Rush....when did you find out about the $7.7 trillion the Fed gave out in loans, just for the record? I really don't expect the truth, but humor me.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Stab...double standards.....CNN had five articles about Cain's misdeeds today. Did they ever do that to Clinton...hardly.

    ReplyDelete
  38. And for the record Rush...I never used the word 'secret', you moron.

    ReplyDelete
  39. CNN ran over 600 stories about Clinton's sexual adventures.

And nobody cares what words you used...the fact is that the loans were secret until revealed recently by Bloomberg news. You didn't know about them, I didn't know about them, even your boy Rush didn't know about them.

Dumb, dumber, dumbest...choose your category...any one will fit.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Stab - get your history straight. There was a tremendous clamor for Clinton to resign, coming from every angle of the political spectrum.

My favorite moment of it all was when James Carville told Bubba "If you resign, I will never speak to you again."

A president's sexual proclivities have nothing to do with his effectiveness in office. Clinton was the best president of the last 20 years. Want to try to prove otherwise?

  41. I know Larry Womble. He is a good person who tries to do the right thing for his constituents. He is also a human being.

White people who were born with the TREMENDOUS advantage of being WHITE have no right to judge him.

Let's hope that he will come out of this situation relatively unharmed...and leave out the political bullshit.

  42. "Re your friends who work at menial jobs, then return to the occupation. Why? How about going home and looking for more suitable employment."

Well, they're not going to find jobs at home. They also spend a good bit of time looking for better jobs. In fact, several have found better jobs through the OWS activity.

You're not nearly as old as I am...have you lost the ability for multi-tasking. These people are not necessarily my "friends" as you style them, just people I listen to. maybe you ought to try the same.

  43. "I do agree with Bucky: Gringrich would best President Obama in a debate."

Really? I have never seen Newty win a single debate. Mostly hot air...a definite "F" in speech class.

Maybe the reason is this, from a most un-liberal press source, Forbes Magazine:

Gingrich Can be Too Smart For His Own Good

I would even challenge his "smartness". Having actually read at least parts of his many books, I find them to be pretty much about the same thing, repetitive to the point that he recycles sentence, paragraphs and even whole chapters, all including numerous violations of basic rules of logic.

As his second wife, who is not his enemy as she probably should be has said "Newt will say anything to get his way."

  44. As expected, Islamist parties have won something like 65% of the seats up for election in the first round of the Egyptian elections.

This reflects a total failure of US foreign policy over the last 60+ years...the US support of the repressive Mubarek regime was bad enough...but the Cheney/Bush wars in Afghanistan and Iraq made it certain that no one would trust the US in any election.

    Prepare for more hard times.
