Winston-Salem Journal LTE MO 09/10/12

Dirty tricks
The patrician class has given us a real-life Thurston Howell III for president, complete with top hat and spats. Forget that we are still licking the wounds from the escapades of another millionaire frat boy. Mitt Romney is so greedy that he couldn't overlook one tax loophole in the 10 years he's been running for president.
Contrast the beginning term of President Obama with that of his predecessor. George W. Bush was swept into office by the vote of five judges and yet was given a honeymoon that lasted until the rape of a nation. Obama took the reins with an economy in shambles and was immediately slammed with hare-brained charges of false birth certificates, Islamic favoritism and the engineered tea-party movement.
The right has resorted to chicanery and dirty tricks for too long. It has been figuratively burglarizing Watergate for 40 years. If some early progressives dabbled in the misguided ideas of eugenics, then it is fair to say the right has led in forced euthanasia through fiat wars for the benefit of Northrop Grumman and General Dynamics. They bankrupt the treasury on Godless pipedreams like the "Star Wars initiative." They scheme to deny the civil rights of Americans from the halls of Congress to the corporate boardrooms. They conspire to steal our very breath.
They go by different names: Republican, Libertarian and blue dog. If you salivate when you hear the racist dog whistles, then you are on the right and you are wrong.

A safer course
It was gratifying to see that Winston-Salem City Council member James Taylor Jr. finally woke up and admitted that he was in violation of the laws of our neighbors ("Taylor pleads guilty to speeding," Aug. 30). I hope he appreciates the fact that the speeding charge was reduced, but I have to wonder if that was because of his honorable position or his race.
Perhaps it would be safer if he chose some other way to clear his head at night, since safe driving requires attention to current conditions. I suggest that he go out in the yard and plant a couple of beans, then contribute his harvest to the food bank; that way, several people would benefit from his therapy.
I further suggest that he consider giving up his concealed-weapon permit, since he cannot remember to carry it, and he fears for his life when a police officer is only trying to protect fellow officers and society in general. It would appear that he has the permit only to intimidate others who also do not obey the law and are too frightened to defend themselves when they feel threatened.
Now that this is behind him, perhaps he will resign from public office and concentrate on clearing up the problems that disturb his rest so that he can sleep after midnight and be more productive and content.

Preoccupied
In a Sept. 5 letter to the Journal, "A stand on gays," the writer bemoans the fact that a new television program "glorifies homosexuality" and fears that this lifestyle will become "The New Normal," which is the name of the program. The writer links the program, by a very long link, to President Obama, who also "has honored homosexuals." According to the writer, the White House is full of 'em.
The writer may take solace in the fact that I will never watch that program. But I will continue to watch President Obama.
I'm not a fact-checker, I assume the writer told me the truth. What bothers me is that the writer and the members of his lifestyle seem to be preoccupied with homosexuality. There are other wonderful, mortal sins out there that deserve attention. For example, columnist Ross Douthat in his book "Bad Religion" points out, "It is rare to hear a rip roaring Sunday's sermon about the temptations of the five-course meal, and the all-you-can-eat buffet …"
Well, if you stand in line, you will realize that it is already too late and that what you are looking at is "The New Normal."

Better information
In his succinct letter, "Impractical" (Sept. 4), the writer has offered wide-ranging guesses as to the number of parking spaces and the number of acres that the Reynolds High School stadium would require. Better information and an architect's rendering can be found atwww.rjreynoldshomefield.com/TheSite/index.html.
Traffic would be a problem, but not an insurmountable one, owing to the use of off-duty police.

What's really at stake
Regarding the controversy over CenterPoint funding, here's a thought: Perhaps it is time to dispense with all the sophomoric posturing and get on with the business of making a proper disposition of the request for additional funding. In particular, these heavy-handed suggestions that funding approval be predicated on the resignation of CenterPoint's chief executive, Betty Taylor, wholesale replacement of its board, or imposing controls over its operations are, in a word, embarrassing ("Forsyth may seek more CenterPoint control as price for loan," Aug. 31). Is this really how Forsyth County conducts its business? Is there no option but to steamroll individuals or entities deemed intransigent or less than charming in manner?
Just a modicum of focus on what's really at stake here (beyond bruised egos) is certainly called for. In an environment of declining dollars, it is even more critical that adequate attention be focused on our citizens who need assistance the most and who cannot speak for themselves. A visit to the Enrichment Center, for example, might provide an apt demonstration of what the developmentally disabled adults in our community have to offer if we care enough to give them an opportunity.

Reynolds stadium
A co-worker saw my bumper sticker, "Bring the Stadium Home," and commented, "Oh, you're supporting that ?" I queried that she must be against it, and she said she guessed so. As the conversation progressed, I was stunned to learn that she had no idea that Reynolds High School doesn't have a home football field on campus. She also had no idea that the proposed stadium actually won't be built in Hanes Park but on property already owned by the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System. It made me wonder how many other residents of Winston-Salem are unaware that Reynolds students, faculty, coaches and parents have to travel five miles away to play home games.
My co-worker was also surprised to hear that a large percentage of the funds for the proposed stadium will come from private donations.
To those who have written that private funds could be used for other purposes (i.e. "smaller class size," as was suggested by the letter "Leave it alone," Sept. 3) I say go ahead and start your own campaign. If that is something you truly believe in, then more power to you. Just don't tell others how to spend the money they are raising for something they feel is in the best interest of the school, its students and the community.
Thankfully, after informing my co-worker of the specifics about the proposed stadium, she changed her mind and said, "That sounds like a great idea!"

His position or race? Playing the race card, huh? Did you even consider, perhaps, it might just be his first offense and he did the right thing by pleading guilty. People get speeding tickets reduced all the time. The one speeding ticket I got was reduced. Was it because I was student body president or a white boy? I wonder. Should people be asked to give up driving if they are stopped and forgot their driver's license? Resign from public office? Now I get it. Satire.

  3. Mr. Rancourt:

I realize that a lot of people have their head in the sand on 'gay' issues, because they don't want to be viewed as bigoted or politically correct. However, there's a lot more to gay rights than meets the eye.

Remember years ago when everybody said we should not be concerned with what people do within the confines of their bedrooms? Now, gays are engaged in 'in your face politics' on a variety of fronts, including gay marriage, health care, specialized treatment in the legal system, gay adoption, tax rights, and re-characterizing gay social benefits.

Many gay rights activists are radical liberals. As such, they are never going to satified with just the right to bang away in their bedrooms. Liberals don't do that. They will force their lifestyle and belief system onto the rest of society, because after all, they know best.

We've already seen the bigoted behavior by both heterosexual and homosexual liberals against religious groups as a result of gay rights issues, these type of attacks will continue as gays and liberals become more emboldened as they attain more political power.

Another place that isn't talked about much that is affected by the poltical influence of gay activists and gays as a whole is in the the workplace. The natural flow of heterosexual social interactions are disrupted there because homosexuals are attracted to the same sex. Thus, any interest by heterosexuals to people of the opposite sex is sometimes perceived by homosexuals of the same sex, as an attempt to take away a potential mate. This often causes retailition by the homosexual, particularly if the homosexual is in a position of power.

No, don't be fooled by people that say 'what do you care what people do in the confines of their bedrooms', because they are probably a liberal fool, that's probably only trying to fool you.

This model-Blue governance- is ending from Tokyo to Athens to Sacremento. Washington will be the last domino. The Federal Reserve is running our markets now which is to say our economy. Mr Krugman's worthless diplomas and honors are laughing at him. Some silly bit of legislation in Congress is not a determinor of an economic recovery now or later. Our troubles have been building over decades and are systemic. It took a full blown financial crisis to see what actual debris was left by the receeding tide after the tsunami.

    3. The banks are "owned" by the Treasury and the Fed "owns" the Treasury. Bad debts from both are now in the hands of the Fed on their balance sheet which we can't see. The Fed and its counter parts around the world are out of ammo. The difference between the economic approaches of the two political campaigns is which way to go on the economy: the Obama model which is a government centered economy that has to be built, or the Romney model which is market centered which has to be rebuilt.

      Delete
    4. then the banks must own the treasury, since in order to be part of the fed, they must buy stock in it. A member bank is a privately owned bank that must buy an amount equal to 3% of its combined capital and surplus of stock in the Reserve Bank within its region of the Federal Reserve System. Sounds like a complicated Ménage à trois in which we all get screwed.

  10. Add another Reverse to the Romney-Ryan Cadillac:
Campaign aides for Republican vice presidential candidate Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) busied themselves this weekend with telling reporters that the candidate “agrees with Mitt Romney” on keeping marijuana illegal, despite him telling a Colorado television station that he supports letting states flout federal laws on medical marijuana.

Romney said earlier this year that he believes “marijuana should not be legal in this country,” calling it “a gateway drug to other drug violations.”

The views would seem to directly clash with what Ryan told KRDO-TV in Colorado on Friday night. “My personal positions on this issue have been let the states decide what to do with these things,” he remarked during a pre-taped interview. “This is something that is not a high priority of ours as to whether or not we go down this issue. But I’ve always believed is the states should make the right to decide.”

That was the result of Judge Peter C. Economus’s ruling Friday, which concluded a hearing that saw Sec. Husted rebuked by attorneys for the Obama campaign in a stinging victory over Republican voter suppression efforts.

“Plaintiffs will suffer irreparable injury if in-person early voting is not restored the last three days before Election Day, and there is no definitive evidence before the Court that elections boards will be tremendously burdened,” Judge Economus wrote. “Certainly, the public interest is served by restoring in person early voting to all Ohio voters.” He added that letting all Ohioans have access to early voting meets the standard of keeping voting “uniform, accessible for all, fair, and secure.”

    13. Military voters are treated far better than they used to be, but there is still much room for improvement.

During WW II, with so many people overseas, the first serious efforts to ensure their right to vote began. But both major parties fought against those efforts, especially when it came to enlisted personnel.

One of the biggest roadblocks was registering to vote. In those days the voting age was mostly 21, so 18-20 year olds had been unable to register before going overseas. The two major parties managed to crush an attempt to allow them to register overseas. There are no hard statistics, but it is estimated that fewer than 10% of overseas personnel actually voted.

No better during Viet Nam. You still had to register at home, and slow overseas mail made it difficult to get absentee ballots in a timely fashion. I voted in two elections, but many of my shipmates never received ballots.

Things are somewhat better today, but in the 2010 election over 20%, possibly more, of those serving overseas never received the ballots that they had asked for.

Military personnel in general have a slightly higher registration percentage than average and tend to vote at a slightly higher rate as well. Contrary to popular belief, they actually have a slightly higher education level than the general public.

I see that you survived the closing ceremony, Stab, so congratulations. Gotta admire anyone who can buy a car and a house in such a short length of time...neither would be listed among my favorite things to do.

    14. Canadian the only illegal alien caught in U.S. fake-voter dragnet
      PAUL KORING
WASHINGTON — The Globe and Mail
Published Monday, Sep. 10 2012, 4:00 AM EDT

After months of searching, only one alien falsely claiming to be a U.S. citizen has been caught, charged and convicted in Florida. It turns out he is a Canadian, a man who registered and voted in at least two presidential elections while masquerading as a citizen so he could also buy and “bear arms,” that other right cherished by many Americans.

Josef Sever, 52, won’t be voting in Florida this November, though. He pleaded guilty on Aug. 30 in federal court in Miami to multiple felony charges of falsely attesting to be a U.S. citizen and illegally voting. Three days after the Nov. 6 election, when Americans will choose between giving Barack Obama a second term or sending Republican challenger Mitt Romney to the White House, Mr. Sever will be sentenced.

He faces up to five years in prison before his long-running scam passing as a U.S. citizen ends with deportation back to Canada.

I knew it all along. Those devious Canadians distracted us by getting us to focus on the southern border, while infiltrating from the north. Mark my words, Mr. Sever is just the first of an army of invasion. Yahweh help us!

I first became suspicious when we held a joint exercise with the Royal Canadian Navy in Alaska in the 1960s. I mean, it was supposed to be a "friendly", but those Canadian marines committed a lot of "unnecessary roughness" penalties on us.

Of course, afterward, we had a great drunken celebration in which we and the Canadians swore eternal friendship...I even correspond by e-mail with some of them to this day.

But they never fooled me. The ultimate goal is to take us back into the British Empire, and clearly, through this voter fraud case, they are succeeding. How many more votes do they need?

    18. You probably think that we are overreacting, but there are nefarious doings all over. The Canadians are simply not giving us the respect due to their betters. Can you imagine something like this?

Canadians stun U.S. to reach wheelchair rugby final

If you read this item carefully, you will discover that some of our other so-called "friends", the Japs and the Aussies, are in cahoots with those demonic Canucks.

Call the Department of Homeland Security and e-mail your Congressional representatives to alert them to this extreme danger, or Canucks, Japs and Aussies will be flooding our polling places come November, especially in the "early voting" phase.

Meanwhile, I'm learning the words to "God Save the Queen". Just in case.

  11. Good afternoon folks!
LTE 1: Over the top rant from Mr. Mir. I read a review of a new book in Sunday's Journal by 2 reputable authors (i.e. after the truth as opposed to looking to stick the blame to one side or the other) which stated both parties have been in collusion with Big Corp and Wall Street to enhance their well being at the expense of the rest of us. It may be sickening to read, but I'm thinking about buying it.

LTE 2: Or, perhaps since Mr. Taylor did plead guilty to get this matter behind him and move on, the rest of us can also move on instead of dwelling on it or making idiotic suggestions. Pleading guilty to a reduced speed or lesser charge happens all the time and has nothing to do with race. I suggest Mr. Quesenberry get a life and quit worrying about Mr. Taylor's.

LTE 3: Have gays replaced communists as the new boogeymen? It does seem to me there's a lot out there that's far more important to worry about than rather or not someone is gay or if a tv show has gay characters. One's weight and overall health would be a prime place to start.

LTE 4,6: More RJR stadium crap. Like I've said before, Parkland doesn't have an on-site stadium either, but you don't see LTE after LTE complaining about it. This subject is old and quite tired.

LTE 5: Good thoughts from Mr. Parker. The arguments seemed to be getting personal, instead of looking at the best way to serve the public's needs.

    1. Thanks dotnet for putting some spaces between your paragraphs. Didn't you say you were an English major? Geez! I would have 'never' thought that.

    2. No, I said I got an A in every English course except for my HS AP English class where I was too distracted by my teacher's legs, so I only got a B. My degrees are in finance, accounting, electronics engineering and information systems.

    3. That makes sense. I thought you were in accounting or something similar.

I'm used to getting out in the world, and seeing things, unlike Rush. That's why I have such an expansive view of our country's social ills.

That was reported on CNN Stab, so please don't flush it.

    2. I'll leave that. Sandra is an interesting lady. She has spent God knows how much dough on post-graduate education ($100K, 200K?), and then wants someone else to pay for her fun. And becomes a minor cause celebre. Oh, what a world, what world," moaned my misunderstood heroine, the Wicked Witch.

    3. And yes, Limbaugh was boorish in calling her names, but his being a boorish buffoon is beside the point.

    4. My, my...I guess when Limbaugh/Dunce sticks his vulgar mouth into anything, the facts just get blown away.

If you go back to the beginning of this flap, you will find that Sandra Fluke was not talking about "her fun", as you put it, but speaking up for a friend who suffered from Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS).

That friend, and millions of other women suffering from a variety of diseases, are unable to take the cheap generic BC pills that most women use. Many must pay far higher prices for very specific types of pills. And the pills are not just for birth control...many are used to control irregular menstrual cycles, some of which are life threatening. Yet the catholics and their christian breeder sychophants go all apoplectic.

The truth is that all men, who have no idea what they are talking about, including me, should just shut up about "female" problems.

What I just typed was fed to me by several of my very bright female friends who are more than just a little sick of listening to we ignorant males yapping about things that are really none of our business.

As to Ann Coulter, she is a disgrace to women everywhere and was long ago drummed out of the corps. She is a vain 50 year old anorexic who has never even had a boyfriend, much less a husband. Wonder why.

    6. Could be, could be.

I know that I once found amusement in watching "her" do guest stints on the Geraldo Rivera show in which she snuggled up close to Geraldo in her tiny little miniskirts and gave him evening after evening of "Basic Instinct" flashes.

Apparently, Geraldo was, like all other men so far, able to resist her "charms".

    7. It's none of our business until 'they' want child support, and a variety of other things- like our house, our car, our land, our stocks, our business.....our......

You never can resist an opportunity to make a fool out of yourself, can you Rush?

    8. Congratulations on your new house and car.

I don't know if anyone knows how much Ms Fluke paid for her Georgetown degree. My daughter has a friend who is currently at Georgetown law and according to her. Lindsey Graham is assisting him (or we tax payers)in paying for his degree since he works on Senator Graham's staff. Not sure she has all her facts straight be I do believe there is probably assistance for congressional staffers to continue their education.

I imagine Ms. Fluke could do quite well on the speakers circuit. If Newt could get $60.000 per speech, then she should be able earn enough to help with her debt, and she does has a law degree and a fabulous resume thanks to Rush.

    11. Thank you, ma'm. I would love to take credit for Ms. Fluke's rise to fame and future prosperity, but, alas, cannot.

What we're down to here is a major correction in the somewhat wobbly path to true equality for all. If you look back deep into history, you will always find a woman who somehow found the courage and determination to stand up for herself and other women, but it was not until the latter half of the 20th century that women began to make any real progress.

Unfortunately, much of that has been illusory, because even as women began to assert themselves in every area of our society, there were always the secret misogynists who liked to tell their dirty little jokes behind women's backs.

Suddenly, this summer, we have seen a few of those bigots exposed for what they are, from Congressman Aiken to money man Friess to would-be VP of the USA Ryan. This is not an accident. These creeps think and talk that way all the time amongst themselves. They try to keep it that way, but their true nature has now come out.

Believe me, there are millions more of them, because as a man, I have heard their vulgar crap for years…they think that I am "one of them"…aren't all men?

Many of them are members of the Democratic Party. But far, far more are members of that other party, which has even incorporated anti-women planks into its disgusting platform.

As I mentioned earlier, the vote on election day is not about Barak Obama or Mitt Romney. It is about which culture you want to see become the dominant culture. Vote Republican if you can then go on to live with yourself afterward. the line has been clearly drawn.

    13. Poor Dunce, you really have to feel sorry for him.

Once upon a time he somehow got a date (there are many inexplicable things that happen in our magnificent universe), got her drunk, date-raped her, she got pregnant, foolishly married him, had a child, discovered his true depths of depravity, divorced him and insisted that he pay his share of the cost of rearing "their" wonderful gift of god.

By Yahweh, it's all her fault!

There is sick, and there is sick and then there is Dunce.

    14. Tobacco Tax:

President Obama signed the tax hike — the biggest to take effect in his first term — on his 16th day in office, reversing two vetoes by President Bush. The federal cigarette tax jumped from 39 cents to $1.01 per pack on April 1, 2009, to finance expanded health care for children. Since then, the change has brought in more than $30 billion in new revenue, tax records show.

Yet the tax hike and its repercussions remain mostly unknown to the non-smoking public. The tax increase's size and national reach lifted prices 22% overnight, more than all state and local tax hikes combined over the past decade when adjusted for inflation.

Obama hasn't raised taxes on the middle class. The lies just keep-a-comin.
