Winston-Salem Journal LTE WE 09/26/12

A unique leader
We have invested 40 years on UNC Chapel Hill’s Board of Trustees, including a decade as chairs, with three different chancellors.
Chancellor Holden Thorp is a principled, caring and dedicated individual who can be a once-in-a-generation leader. When selected, we knew his experience had not fully prepared him for the job, but that he would grow into it. His superior intellect and leadership qualities have benefited UNC in countless ways, including a top 10 research funding ranking and $330 million in fundraising commitments last year. He launched a visioning process to maximize the relevance of the university in the 21st century.
History is full of examples of people who faced adversity early in their careers, learned lessons and became visionary leaders. Steve Jobs, Nelson Mandela and Margaret Thatcher are a few.
But under the 24-hour news cycle and social media, it is difficult for new leaders to develop. Every decision is questioned, and there is a standard that few, if any, can meet. This overzealous scrutiny discourages those with potential from serving in public roles.
Holden’s resignation was a serious setback. Holden is a unique leader with the vision and knowhow to move UNC toward its full potential. One can argue that he was slightly ahead of his time, but if that is true, then we have all failed to help build his potential. The university and the state are the real losers. We hope that at some point, Holden will reconsider his decision.

Blaming the poor
Considering Mitt Romney's recent remarks, his refusal to release his tax returns and how fast and far the one-percenters are pulling away from the rest of us, this quote by author Norman Mailer (1923-2007) seems right on:
“To blame the poor for subsisting on welfare has no justice unless we are also willing to judge every rich member of society by how productive he or she is. Taken individual by individual, it is likely that there's more idleness and abuse of government favors among the economically privileged than among the ranks of the disadvantaged.”

Takers and makers
Do today’s Republicans really believe that 47 percent of Americans are “takers,” living off money confiscated from the “makers”?
When was the last time a prominent Republican leader made a point of praising hard-working, ordinary American families as opposed to “job creators”?
On Labor Day, House majority leader Eric Cantor (Republican) tweeted: “Today, we celebrate those who have taken a risk, worked hard, built a business and earned their own success.”
Even on Labor Day, he couldn’t praise American workers?
CNN’s John King recently shared a bit of his personal life when he said, “As a kid, my family was on food stamps for a few years when my dad got sick. We didn’t feel entitled and we weren’t victims and my father was actually pretty embarrassed about the whole thing. But in the end my mother was grateful that she was able to feed her kids.”
This strikes me as a more likely view of the majority of people who have to accept government aid than the view that the Romney campaign touts about laziness and “entitlement.”
All Republicans do these days is complain about the way things are going in America. They can’t say one kind — or honest, it seems — word about the American president or the American people or the American government.
When Chris Stevens, the U.S. ambassador in Libya, was killed, Mitt Romney’s first instinct was not to express sympathy, but to criticize the president.
Why do Republicans hate America so much?

I'm confused
It just occurred to me with all the fuss the biased media is making over Mitt Romney's wealth, I do not remember hearing anything about John Kennedy's fortune, or for that matter John Kerry’s. I'm not sure if Kennedy or Kerry gave anything to charity, but it probably doesn't come anywhere near what Romney has given.
Oh, I get it. Romney is Republican, Kennedy and Kerry are Democrats. Romney worked for his money, Kennedy inherited his and Kerry married his. Never mind, the liberals will only say, “So what?”
A quote from Mark Twain: “if you don't read the newspaper, you're uninformed, if you read the newspaper, you're misinformed.”

Bring the troops home
Shortly after the World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks in 2001, we sent our military forces into Afghanistan to overthrow the Taliban and remove all support for al-Qaida. We remain there yet today, with a strategy that has failed.
The stated goal of the Obama administration is train the Afghan forces to be able to provide their own security. We have recently had to terminate joint patrols and embedding of our troops with Afghan units because of attacks on our people by Afghans they are working and living with.
We continue to have our brave young people killed and maimed by the Taliban and other Afghan attackers and will do so until we finally leave there.
I now firmly believe it is time to pull the troops out immediately. Fold our tents, pull up the stakes, pack our bags and bring the troops home.
I find it intolerable to lose yet one more American life in this hopeless war. There is no possible benefit that would accrue to our staying one minute longer, much less another year.
The troops did their best, served with honor, gallantry and great sacrifice. It was not they who failed, but it was our national leadership, two presidents, two administrations, many Congresses, and above all, our top military leadership. They have let the troops down once again just exactly as happened during the Vietnam War.
Let’s honor the troops and do right by them — and bring them all home now.

LOS ANGELES -- Teresa Heinz Kerry controls a family fortune valued at nearly $1 billion, the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday.

Kerry campaign says he can't tap wife's fortune.
WASHINGTON (AP) — John Kerry's campaign says the Massachusetts senator cannot legally use any of his wife's multimillion-dollar Heinz investment holdings.
La Times, Boston Herald, PBS, USA Today, Forbes, The Examiner, NY Times, NBC, CNN, Business week, FOX news, they all reported on the Kerry/Heinz wealth back in 2004.
There have been many wealthy presidents, Kennedy, both Roosevelts, but you'll find they all championed the middle class and the poor with their words and policies, unlike the current GOP candidate who said he " wasn't concerned about the very poor, they have a safety net" and "It's not my job to worry about the 47%, they consider themselves victims and will not vote for me anyway."

Marion Hodges scores on both counts...uninformed and misinformed.

"Probably" is the "problem" for Hodges, Dunce, Dunce's mentor Limbaugh and all others who constantly run their mouths about everything under the sun, yet know nothing about anything. So they just make assumptions that reinforce their own selfish and ignorant beliefs.

Both JFK and his brother, the Attorney General, donated their salaries to charity...nobody knew, because unlike Romney, the Kennedy's never went around drawing attention to their charitable giving because they had been brought up properly.

1 Take heed that yee doe not your almes before men, to bee seene of them: otherwise yee haue no reward of your father which is in heauen.

2 Therefore, when thou doest thine almes, doe not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites doe, in the Synagogues, and in the streetes, that they may haue glory of men. Uerily, I say vnto you, they haue their reward.

3 But when thou doest almes, let not thy left hand know, what thy right doeth:

4 That thine almes may be in secret: And thy father which seeth in secret, himselfe shall reward thee openly.
      _Matthew 6:1-4

JFK and RFK also gave far more than their salaries. We don't know how much because they made a point of keeping all their giving secret.

JFK, Jr. followed in their footsteps, devoting most of his brief life to charity. Experts estimate that no American family has given as much as the Kennedy's.

Keep your "probablies" to yourself, Marion.

  2. Women are killing us.

Women favor Obama by a substantial margin. However, men favor Romney as a general rule. Women, who 'say' they want to be self- sufficient and independent in all ways, will, apparently, vote for the 'entitlement' president in 2012.

This has been a long trend among women. They say one thing, and do, and want another. Sexist laws and decisions have long prevailed in our court system, without nary a complaint from women, especially when it favored women over men.

Although a downturn in the economy will be the first benefactor of women's votes, our foreign policy will also suffer. Will we literal die, because of Obama's foreign policies in the near future?

People never like to admit they've made a mistake or they're wrong (like voting for Obama in the first place), especially liberal NWs like Rush, but sometimes it's for our own good to do so.

    National: Obama +6
    Florida: Obama +3
    Florida: Obama +9
    Ohio: Obama +10
    Pennsylvania: Obama +12
    Pennsylvania: Obama +9

And it continues to affect Senate races as well, even as GOP Senate candidates scramble to distance themselves from Mitty's poisonous tongue.

    Ohio: Brown +10
    Florida: Nelson +14
    Pennsylvania: Casey +6
    Pennsylvania: Casey +10

And in Florida's 18th Congressional District, the race between Allen West and Patrick Murphy, originally seen as a West walkover, is a dead heat…no polls since Mitt went motormouth, but I think that most folks in the district know why you can't open airliner windows. And certainly West has mouth issues of his own.

If any farther proof is needed, see the part about signs. Fools deny scientific polls and go by how many signs they see or some other made up imagined personal experience. I haven't seen many of any kind, which tells me that voter enthusiasm is low. I have seen a couple of anti-Obama signs, a dozen or so Obama/Bidens. One thing I have not seen is "Romney/Ryan". None of that means much.

Dunce reminds me of the fool who said that he could tell that the ocean is not rising by looking at it.

Somebody said the other day that the only polls that they believe are the ones about "direction of the country" and some other negative thing. Are they unaware that (1) the same people do all the other polls and (2) such a statement reveals more about them and their thinking ability than it does about everything else?

By: Erick Erickson (Diary) | September 26th, 2012 at 12:37 PM

I do not believe the polls are all wrong. I do not believe there is some intentional, orchestrated campaign to suppress the GOP vote by showing Mitt Romney losing. I actually believe that Mitt Romney trails Barack Obama. I think Republicans putting their hopes in the polls all being wrong is foolish. But I also believe the polls are reflecting a bigger Democratic strength than is really there. I do believe, as Jim Geraghty notes, there is a confirmation bias in many polls. The polls are confirming what the press thinks and that they have a larger than 2008 Democratic turnout is of no consequence to them.

John McLaughlin is a well respected pollster and I put merit in what he is saying. I think pollsters should do a better job explaining why their heavy weighting of Democrats has merit. I’ll concede that Barack Obama is ahead, but I will not concede he is ahead by as much as some polls are showing. This is an incredibly close race.

But let’s be honest — pollsters have reputations to worry about and they aren’t going to intentionally try to screw up. I think it is relevant that Gallup and Rasmussen have been pretty close together while other polls, more tied to media organizations, have wildly swung. I do think, however, that Romney must make up ground and he is not doing it. He’s got five weeks. He needs to give up trying to be liked and prove he can turn the economy around. Let’s hope Stanley Kurtz is right.

That’s just the reality of the situation.

LTE 1: After everything Chancellor Thorp has had to deal with since taking the post, I can understand him wanting to get back into the classroom and the lab. Thorp is an exceptionally brilliant person who is well regarded by the UNC staff and trustees, but even a more seasoned chancellor would be hard-pressed to survive the scandals that have hitthe school. Of course, if the anti-educational R's resume control of the state legislative and gain control of the governorship, the chancellors of every public university in the state are going to have even more serious issues to deal with. That may have also played a role in Thorp's decision.

LTE 2: In difficult times, people tend to look for some scapegoat to blame for their situation, and it's usually easiest to use the powerless as the scapegoat.

LTE 3: It is interesting to see how the R's have totally immersed themselves in the Ayn Rand philosophy although it is completely at odds with the religious convictions of the R core base. The Romney campaign is now showing ads touting Romney's concern for the middle class and his program to add more jobs. However, I did not see how his plan was going to create employment opportunities for workers who lack desired skills or incentivize small businesses to hire employees that are not needed. It was standard supply side fare when the problem is on the demand side.

LTE 4: JFK's election was before I was even born, so I can't comment on the coverage of his wealth, but I do recall Kerry being married to a Heinz bought up on several occasions. Jibjab spoofed Kerry's wealth marvelously on their version of "This Land is Your Land". Ms. Hodges must have selective memory or not have paid attention back in 2004. I'm curious about the basis for Ms. Hodges assertion that Kerry and JFK failed to give as much to charity as the Romney's. Does she have special access to their tax forms to make such a claim, or is she just speculating based on a prejudicial view as an R? Romney did work for his money, but he was born on 3rd base and was able to jog home with a lot of help ordinary people don't have.

LTE 5: A "bring the troops back now" tome. Unfortunately, it just ain't that simple. The troop surge is over, and a departure date for all troops has been established, but it takes time to wind down operations and turn security matters over to the host govt. I'm not sure what criteria Mr. Chappell is using to say that Afghanistan was a failure. OBL is dead, al Qaida has been decimated, and the Taliban, while still a threat, no longer rule Afghanistan.

  17. Re Motsinger: yes, I like Motsinger, have communicated with her a few times re school board issues. I do not know about her political stance past the school board, so I don't know for whom I will vote. As an apostate R, now Unaffiliated, I am in the massively disenchanted category of voters, displeased with the lot.

I actually went online last weekend, read 3 party platforms, D, R, and Libertarian, for whatever that was worth. 2 were screeds. I actually agreed much more with the Lib platform than the R, and of course the Dem provision opposing Save Secret Ballot and paycheck protection make that platform an anathema. I will go to the polls and early vote. Perhaps Que Sera' Sera' will be on the ballot.

    1. Women pull men to the left, Stab. I've seen that happen to a couple of my friends. You gotta stay strong.

They employ two tactics: 1) They push the lib view so incessantly, that you either agree with it, or they'll drive you crazy talking about it, and of course, you know the other tactic.

    2. As if Dunce has any friends.

      More "personal experience" BS.

Oh, yeah, Dunce go here to see snippets from Madonna's performance this weekend in DC. You'll never know a 54 year old babe that looks this good.

Better stick to poor little anorexic 50 year old virgin Ann Coulter.

    3. If it were not for a woman you would not be here, Bucky. It is now possible for women to live and reproduce without men. (A sperm bank is all that is needed.) Be careful when you insult the far superior sex.

    4. Excellent Wordly, I knew I'd get you to re-engage.

I've got a good one for tomorrow. Hang on.......

  18. Mitty is at it again...the crowd reaction was HUH???

'WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- In a line that event attendees found a bit puzzling, Mitt Romney warned a crowd of mostly middle-class onlookers on Wednesday not to expect too much tax relief under his administration.

"We have got to reform our tax system," Romney said at a morning event here. "Small businesses most typically pay taxes at the individual tax rate. And so our individual income taxes are the ones I want to reform. Make them simpler. I want to bring the rates down. By the way, don't be expecting a huge cut in taxes because I'm also going to lower deductions and exemptions. But by bringing rates down we will be able to let small businesses keep more of their money so they can hire more people." '

Sounds like something Dunce boy might say.
