Winston-Salem Journal LTE MO 09/24/12

Repairing the damage
Mitt Romney’s recently-disclosed comments are so crude, unfair and unpresidential that even long-time conservative supporters are criticizing him and abandoning his campaign.
Yet the Journal reports the problem on A8 (“Romney: Many think they are victims,” Sept. 18) and his apologists’ defenses on A1 (“Romney remarks defended,” Sept. 19).
Is this, perhaps, an indication of who the Journal will endorse for president this year?
If so, let me urge you strongly to reconsider. We had to suffer eight years of Republican tragedy under George W. Bush. No one could repair that damage in a mere four years, but President Obama has done a remarkable job, especially considering the opposition he’s faced from unreasonable, prejudiced men like Romney.
Bush led us to disaster. Obama pulled us back from the abyss. Does anyone really think that Romney would take us anywhere but back to disaster?

Paying the debt
I hope most intelligent, reasoning people, whether Republican, Democrat or unaffiliated, read the Sept. 16 editorial “Business must cover this debt.” It's very well-written and to the point, which is:
Pat McCrory, a Republican running for governor of North Carolina, was and is a businessman. Business owners will benefit by taxing non-business owners, i.e., working stiffs like us, to pay back the loans from the federal government for unemployment compensation to workers laid off or fired during the recession. The reason for this was that our North Carolina legislature kept decreasing business owners' mandatory unemployment insurance payments for employees to keep and attract businesses, which has been happening since the 1990s. De-regulation of big business, which moved out of country; massive lay-offs; the unemployed filing in droves, and North Carolina reserves, underfunded because of the above, were quickly used up. Now we owe the federal government $2.8 billion in unemployment loans. $2.8 billion!
Pat McCrory wants all North Carolina taxpayers to foot this repayment by (gasp, of course!) raising non-business taxpayers’ taxes. Employees didn't benefit by these decreased unemployment premiums, just the business owners. As the editorial said, that's not fair. If Republican Pat McCrory becomes governor, with a majority Republican Senate and House, this is exactly what will happen.
Let business pay for this debt. Please remember this on voting day.

Refutation
The writer of the letter “Facts” (Sept. 18) seems to believe that labeling something as “fact” is an effective argument. Following is as much refutation as word limits allow:
The fact that job losses were occurring when President Obama was sworn in is typical for the middle of a recession. What is remarkable is how Obama’s counter-productive policies have retarded the recovery and have resulted in a 14.6 percent unemployment rate (inclusive of discouraged workers). Reagan’s recovery from a similar sharp downturn resulted in three times as much growth at the comparable business cycle point.
Crediting Obama with a rise in the stock market is extremely dubious. If Obama really does have magical market powers, why hasn’t he lifted the Dow above its 2007 level of 13,639? Has Obama fallen below the Bush benchmark? (Answer: no one has that kind of influence over the market.)
General Motors is not thriving. Its share price is half of what would be required to pay back the taxpayers. The Obama intervention merely allowed GM to continue its insane labor policies and compete unfairly with other auto companies that manufacture in the U.S. A proper bankruptcy procedure would have forced structural changes that would have allowed GM to thrive without additional subsidies.
Osama bin Laden is dead, thank God and thank the SEALs. And thank political adviser Valerie Jarrett who, having previously vetoed the mission three times, finally allowed Obama to give the go-ahead.
Fact is, we need new leadership.

  1. Ms Stockmeister, are you related to Rush?

You must be, because most people wouldn't have the nerve to write such a ridiculously, stupid piece into the Journal, using no logical reasoning or analytical skills, unless they are on the extreme, liberal fringes of the Democratic Party.

In case you've been politically asleep, Democrats have been in charge of the General Assmebly for the last 100 years in N.C., prior to the last two years. And they've been running things, if they objected to helping business owners, and in effect, helping employees of this state all these years by the reduced unemployment payments, they should have raised their hands, and said something. Now, after the Democrats have essentially thrown our state into an economic disaster, and Republicans are trying to dig our state out of all of the 'muck' that Democrats left, they say don't give the keys to a Republican. Huh?

Beside that, why shouldn't we repay a loan if we owe the money?

Furthermore, you entire letter is mute, because McCrory has not been elected to the office of governor, so we have no idea, for sure, what he will do.

When you and Rush meet at your next family reunion, try to come up with more cogent and responsible remarks for your next letter. I'm not holding my breath though. I know Rush too well.

  2. LTE #1 – The W-S Journal was ordered by its owners in Richmond to endorse George W. Bush for President in 2000, which caused the resignation of the editor of the editorial page. After a similar situation developed in 2004, the Journal did not make an endorsement in the presidential race. In 2008, the Journal endorsed John McCain.

Since the Journal is now under new ownership it is unclear who they will endorse, although the new ownership group is known to allow each newspaper to make its own decision.

LTE #2 – Ms. Stockmeister is correct in that businesses are supposed to pay for unemployment. She is also correct in that, thanks to the legislature, businesses have not been paying enough for many years.

Unfortunately, there is no way to retroactively make businesses pay up, so the burden will now fall upon the taxpayers.

LTE #3 – Mr. Watson is a part of the Dunce school of why tell the truth when a lie is more interesting.

Ignoring his economic BS, all of which has repeatedly been shown to be false, let’s just say that the nonsense about Bin Laden’s capture was fabricated by some crackpot writer, a breed which seems to be on the increase these days.

    1. A newspaper shouldn't be in the business of endorsing any candidate for any political office. It's up to the readers to make their own political decisions.

The liberal faction of the Journal's administrative staff have hijacked the newspaper, and are promoting their own political agenda, and the newspaper is paying for it. You can say the Journal's plummet to the bottom of the newspaper trash bin, was because of the internet, but it runs much deeper than that.

I'm probably just one of thousands that no longer subscribe to the paper.

I saw someone peddling the paper at the grocery store the other day. No takers, however, even though the paper was free.

    2. Clearly ignorant of newspaper history, past and present.

The only problem that the Journal has when it does its promotions at shopping centers and grocery stores is having enough papers on hand to meet the demand.

If Dunce is too stupid to take a free paper, then he is too stupid to do much of anything.

  4. Mitty is at it again...yesterday on 60 Minutes:

"Well, we do provide care for people who don't have insurance," he said in an interview with Scott Pelley of CBS's "60 Minutes" that aired Sunday night. "If someone has a heart attack, they don't sit in their apartment and die. We pick them up in an ambulance, and take them to the hospital, and give them care."

    Is this guy for real?

  7. Good afternoon folks! Guess we'll be getting lots of endorsements from here on.
LTE 1: Buffett has shown to have a hands off policy in regards to the editorial opinions of the papers he owns, so this will be a concensus of the Journal editorial board this time instead of a dictation from Media General. Guess we'll see the endorsement in about 5 weeks or so. Of course, I've also noticed the heavy coverage when UNC's Marvin Austin tweeted about his good time in Hawaii which was paid for by an agent and scant coverage of dook's Lance Thomas paying down $30,000 for jewelry with a 15 day $68,000 line of credit in the fall semester of Thomas's senior year.

LTE 2: NC's legislatures made a bad bet in thinking that low unemployment was here to stay 10 years ago, and it came back to bite them. I'm sure they were heavily lobbied by the Chamber of Commerce and other groups to lower the insurance premiums. I find it interesting that some of the same circles wanting citizens to pick up the tab for this short-sightedness are opposed to a $0.0075 increase in the sales tax to make up for the shortfall in education funds.

LTE 3: The economic policies Obama was able to get pushed through were a continuance of what GWB had started. Once Brown was elected in MA following TK's death, all proposed economic policies came to a halt by Congress. The comparison to Reagan is a false analogy because that recession and recovery was due to actions by the Federal Reserve to end inflation, whereas this recession was due to a systematic financial meltdown that greatly reduced the ability to obtain credit thereby significantly reducing demand. Given the credit woes at the time, the survivability of a company so heavily dependent on credit sales such as a GM was seriously in doubt. GM, in fact did file for restructuring after the govt stepped in. Granted, it's only speculation what would have happened had the govt not stepped in, but it is highly likely GM would have been filing for dissolution instead of restructuring. As for Ms. Jarrett calling the OBL shots, better check your sources on that BS.

  13. Corporal punishment: it should be banned in schools, period. Parents should not practice it, either, IMO. Why can a school authority or parent commit an act on a child that would be at least a misdemeanor if committed upon an unconsenting adult? And what do we teach children when we show them that hitting someone who is defenseless is good? Or getting mad and hitting someone is good parenting?

Violence in entertainment is a problem, but the real life violence, even low grade, practiced by authority figures also sets a negative example, IMO.

    1. Agree 100%.

As children, we were subjected on occasion to corporal punishment. My mother, and even my father, later admitted that that was a mistake.

On the other hand, I know a few consenting adults who enjoy a bit of B & D...whatever floats your boat!

Striking a child, or for that matter, verbally abusing them, as in the case of the East Forsyth coach, is never justified.

    1. Early this year Rick Santorum said "when you run for president of the United States, it should be illegal to read off a teleprompter. Because all you're doing is reading somebody else's words to people."

Who was he attacking? Since the right wing has made a big deal over teleprompters, you would assume that he was attacking the President. But he wasn't. He was going after Mitt Romney. And what he was really complaining about was that Mitt Romney was a better speaker than he was.

The whole teleprompter business is nonsense. Ever since their invention, almost every major politician has used them…a simple technological progression from note cards and outlines. Take them all away, notecards, outlines and teleprompters, and the best speaker will still be the best speaker.

It doesn't take much knowledge about public speaking to know who the better speaker is between Romney and Obama. Dream on.

  18. Probably the worst polling day for any candidate in recent history.

Mitt's Mouth just keeps on running, and the wheels are beginning to come off his election wagon.

New polls in states in which the President had moderate leads have jumped to big leads:

    Michigan +12
    Wisconsin +12
    Pennsylvania +8
    Minnesota +8

But more importantly, four states that were dead heats a week ago:

    Colorado +6
    Nevada +7
    Iowa +7
    Florida +5

And one total embarrassment. NC has been Mitty's to lose all along. Over the weekend two new polls showed the President up by 2-4. But the latest is unbelievable.

Civitas, the fascist group in Raleigh, does its own polling and structures the questions to ensure that the GOP candidate gets huge false margins. Well, this time, despite all its twisting and turning, it had to admit that the President has a 4 point lead in NC.

There is no joy in Mudville, mighty Mitty has struck out.
