Winston-Salem Journal LTE MO 01/09/12

A new party
If I could, I would start a new political party named Demrep or Repdem. This party would see to the needs of all people, not just those who support their party lines.
We pay the salaries and everything else of those in office. They should support us , the people.

Stimulus plans
The ongoing debate as to the efficacy of stimulus plans brings to mind the Marshall Plan. After World War II, Europe was devastated. There was high unemployment (something like us), badly damaged infrastructure, a crippled industrial base, and the economy and agriculture at a fraction of pre-World War II levels. As it turned out, through the Marshall Plan the recovery of Europe was greatly accelerated. Europe became our best customers. Much of the stimulus was returned to the United States through the purchase of food, manufactured goods and raw materials (something like the return of stimulus money by the banks).
Incidentally, the two strong proponents of the plan were former President Herbert Hoover (Hoover Commission) and president-to-be Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower. Sounds like bipartisanship.

Abundance of fossil fuels
I never realized how misinformed I was. Columnist George Will ("Ringing in a conservative year," Jan. 2) makes the case that instead of running out of oil, as informed sources have said for years, we are actually facing "the specter of abundance."
"Imagine what a horror 2011 was for progressives as Americans began to comprehend their stunning abundance of fossil fuels ..." He continues that due to this "abundance" the Environmental Protection Agency, environmentalists, climate change, the Energy Department and the Chevy Volt are essentially unneeded intrusions by progressives bent on rationing. Need more proof? He cites a Wall Street Journal headline: "Americans Embrace SUVs Again."
The cause of all of this optimism? Will notes that "In 2011, for the first time in 62 years, America was a net exporter of petroleum products." A sigh of relief; why did it take us so long? I reread that sentence and stumbled over the unusual term "net exporter of petroleum products." So I did some research. That "net exporter" includes only oil that has been refined into a finished product. We did export more refined product than we imported mostly because of world demand for heating oil and diesel fuel (both recently reached record high prices, because of shortage). What Will fails to say is the net exports of refined petroleum products are dwarfed by our huge negative trade imbalance in crude oil, the stuff from which petroleum products are made.

A small percentage
I am writing in reference to your story about Matthew Burczyk, who is in charge of creating bike lanes in Winston-Salem ("Planner plots city path to better bike travel," Jan. 2). The city is paying him $47,000 a year, a very nice salary in today's economy, to take land for the lanes, which will result in people losing parking in front of their homes. Sometimes this is the only parking they have. If the city is using eminent-domain to acquire the land, that is an added expense.
And for what? To create lanes for bike riders, a rather small percentage of the city's population.
Economist Thomas Sowell has used the term "vision of the anointed" for situations like this. A small group of insiders are running an expensive program to fit their vision of what the city needs. They always come up with reasons that sound good on the surface, but never put it to a vote of the people. In the process, they are creating inconvenience and expense for the majority of the people.
If one is looking for a place to cut money on government spending, the bike-path program would be a good place to start. I am not in favor of people losing their jobs. Move the people involved into needed productive work that is equal to their pay.

  1. :) No wonder the Evangelicals in Texas are so worked up. What with the Baylor University Bear's women's basketball team undefeated and #1, the men's team undefeated and #4, a Heisman Trophy, and now Tim Tebow of John 3:16 fame has thrown for 316yds, averaging 31.6yds/catch.

  3. This LaSombra A/K/A Nancy Drew person must be a complete moron. Not only is she a liberal Democrat, but she's posting somebody's picture under the assumption that it's a photograph of someone on the internet.

You can't get much dumber than that, unless of course you get on board with her moronic theory that she's correctly identified the person in question.

Well, again.....that just goes to show ya how dumb liberal Democrats can be.

    Hee Hee....you gotta love it!

  5. Bobby Bobby Bobby Bobby Bobby! I withdraw my request for you to look into the long ago bank robbery/Schatzman question. It's clear by recent events that that's way over your head.

It's amazing how if you build up a little confidence in a liberal Democrat, then suddenly everything goes to Hell, isn't it?

  6. Rush, it's hate and ignorance that motivates liberals like Nancy. They can't help themselves.

  8. You notice he how NEVER, EVER engages ME, RIELLE, NOR NANCY DREW, but ALWAYS has something to say to the rest of the posters on the forum ABOUT me, Rielle or Nancy Drew?

    And ALWAYS draws first blood?

    Bucky . . . why didn't you tell me just how deeply I've affected you . . .?

. . . and the man you claim you don't know?

  9. I like Arthur's comment...clever.

Isn't it ironic that the one who exhibits the most hate...women, blacks, Latinos, liberals, Democrats, sheriffs...indeed, anyone who isn't him...is always whining about how people hate him.

Got news for you Buckboard...hate is a very special thing...it takes a lot of energy to carry out...and, frankly, you're not worth that kind of effort. No one on this site hates you...they just laugh at you.

  10. Good afternoon folks!
LTE 1: Yes, we pay the salaries, but the millions required to get elected in the first place are paid by special interest groups, so that's whom the politicians are most interested in serving. I'm also in favor of the emergence of a third party.
LTE 2: Hoover and Eisenhower were both R's, but it did get enacted under Truman who was a D. The rebuilding efforts in Europe and Japan were quite successful. The economic situation is a little different in the US today where you have a rather large block of people who are essentially unemployable without retraining in some in-demand fields.
LTE 3: Isn't it interesting how pundits have a tendency to leave out the fine print when making claims? It's called propaganda which entails a grain of truth wrapped up in opinions and falsehoods.
LTE 4: I'm going out on a limb and assuming that Mr. Schollander parks his car in the street. In Scottsdale, there were bike lanes on almost every city street. Not every road is a candidate for bike lanes which would include those where on street parking is a necessity. Of course, I've also driven on roads with empty driveways and cars parked on the street instead.

  11. Speaking of Hoover, his name was permanently blemished by the stock market crash, but he was a remarkable man who deserved better.

He was in the 1st class at Stanford and was the first student to sleep in a Stanford dorm room. He was an accomplished mining engineer who sort of backed into government service by establishing two massive food relief efforts during and after WW I.

The 2nd of those helped keep 20 million starving Russian peasants alive during and after the Russian revolution. For that, the New York Times named him one of the 10 most important living Americans.

He served as Secretary of Commerce under Harding and was one of the few honest cabinet members in the most corrupt administration in American history. Historians consider him to be the best Secretary of Commerce ever.

After his failed presidency, he became an enemy to the FDR administration, to the point that FDR changed the name of Hoover Dam to Boulder Dam, which it remained for many years.

But he and Harry Truman became best friends. During and after WW II he helped organize massive food relief efforts in Poland, Finland and Germany.

And he was one of the few major voices of sanity in opposing the Korean War, predicting exactly how it would end up.

He had the longest retirement of any US president...almost 32 years. If Jimmy Carter lives until August 21, he will surpass Hoover's record.

  14. Hey Rielle, A/K/A an inept Nancy Drew, does the guy in the picture that you have posted look like he could run 5 miles everyday? Nooooooo!

So, you can continue making a fool out of yourself if you want (you do seem to enjoy it), I really don't care. But be forwarned. I intend to make note of it.

  15. Hoover was a tragic figure in many ways. He saved millions of lives as director of the Wilson Administration food relief program, and was a brilliant administrator...but then everything went to hell on his watch.

I don't think he had FDR's charisma or leadership skills, but he was still a very good man.

  16. The only Hoover I know anything about is Margaret Hoover. She's suppose to be a Republican. But you can see by the below exchange, she's a pain in the butt.

Just so everyone is clear, there is an appeals process. My husband and I went through the process. You have 10 days from the date you are terminated to appeal the termination. You must submit the appeal in writing to everyone in your chain of command and to the Sheriff. Keep him busy, whether you think it will do any good or not, appeal the decision. If you would like his contact information, you can email me at this website.

On another note, I do recall warning the people on this forum what Schatzman was capable of in 2008. Alas, few heeded my warning and this is where we are. You always think that they will come for the others but not for me.

As the old saying goes, when they came for my neighbor I did nothing because it wasn't me. When they came for my friend, I did nothing because it wasn't me. When they came for me, I looked around and realized I was the only one left and there was no one to speak for or defend me. People think about this.

Call CALEA and complain, scream from the mountain top. Unless we come in force we might as well stay home!!!!!

Charona went on to give a speech to CALEA Administrators in opposition to the Forsyth County Sheriff's Department application to be approved as a CALEA organization.

    Her plea failed.

I wonder why? Maybe, they didn't BELIEVE her.
