Winston-Salem Journal LTE TH 01/12/12

Transportation opportunities
The writer of the Jan. 9 letter "A small percentage" wrote that the creation of bike paths is an "inconvenience and expense for the majority of the people." I beg to differ. Our community owes everyone equal transportation opportunities, no exceptions.
Many bike for pleasure, but others bike because it's the only transportation they can afford. Cars are pricey (maintenance, gas, insurance). Conservative estimates are that we spend as much on transportation as we do on housing (30-33 percent each). The 2009 median household income in Forsyth County was $45,769, which means that a typical household spends about $14,188 per year on cars.
As gasoline prices rise, many look for alternatives. Bikes are cheaper and greener and allow us to burn a few calories, important when most of us are overweight. I recently became disabled. Now I notice things I never did before, like limited sidewalks and speed bumps everywhere. What about the handicapped person? As a minority user, guess they're out of luck. This is wrong. We owe every user a safe and accessible means of transportation.
Those who drive will rarely use a bike path. They need and get roads. Bikers need paths, which we must supply. Most of the money for these comes from the feds, money that we're due. I paid into that money and I want it back, especially when it makes my home better and my community the best it can be.

Setting limits
I was pleased to read your Dec. 16 article "Chimps get reprieve," where the government is finally setting limits on the use of animals for research. There have been alternative methods for medical research in place for years that are actually more effective than using animals.
This barbaric practice of torturing animals in the name of medical progress has been eliminated in many universities and hospitals because of alternative means of research that don't include the maiming of primates. Some chimps never recover from the abuse suffered by research.
Unfortunately, Wake Forest Baptist Hospital has not been one of the innovators in the forefront of those that have phased out their primate centers. Perhaps now that there will be a ban on using chimpanzees in medical research, Wake Forest Baptist Hospital can no longer justify invasive medical research. Maybe now it will be forced to close its primate center — something that should have been done long ago.

Sum It Up
The Sum It Up question from Sunday was: Has Gov. Bev Perdue been effective in creating jobs?

* * * * *

Given the obstinate/obstructionist nature of today's N.C. General Assembly, including some of the unconscionable legislation sent to Gov. Perdue, I am amazed at her positive spirit and energy in terms of job recruitment.
Just think where our state would be if there were cooperation between our governor and General Assembly. Just think of the difference there would be if the Republican majority of representatives and senators actually cared about the welfare of those who elected them.

ANNE GRIFFIS WILSON

* * * * *

No politician can create jobs, despite what they promise. All they can create is a more favorable and positive economic environment so that the 90 percent of the people who do have jobs are willing to buy more goods and services, because the makers and sellers of goods and services are the only organizations that can create jobs.
We can't borrow our way out of a recession, we have to buy our way out.

HERBERT OSMON

* * * * *

I don't remember any other governor sending out emails, or any other type of communication, to the public reporting about their activities. She has been successful in many of her efforts to bring more jobs to our state.

  1. North Carolina ranks high for business environment
    Charlotte Business Journal

    North Carolina has maintained its No. 2 rank for the second consecutive year in Chief Executive magazine’s poll of the best states in which to conduct business.
    Chief executives rated Texas as the top state for the seventh consecutive year.
    CEOs voted California as the worst state in 2011, with New York, Illinois, New Jersey and Michigan rounding out the bottom five.
    The magazine’s survey takes the pulse of CEOs on business conditions around the nationvaluated the states on a broad range of issues, including regulations, tax policies, work-force quality, education resources, quality of living and infrastructure.

    1. It is interesting to note which areas put us at the top in this poll.

      We were at or near average in most areas, but three items made the real difference.

      1. State debt per resident: $2,138 put us among the 12 best states thanks to over a century of balanced budgets.

      2. Workforce quality: 7.66, 8th in the nation. A significant part of that ranking can be credited to our 59 superb community colleges.

      3. Quality of living: 8.53, 1st in the nation.

    2. Good AM,
      1. Agreed.
      2. Agreed. But, our low rate of unionization contributes. Note the worst-rated states have high unionization and strong public unions.
      3. Agreed.

      Delete
    3. I guess if I said that part of our quality of living rating is due to having one of the best state park systems in the country, "somebody" would manage to claim that the lack of unions has something to do with that as well.

      Yeah, I know cuz, it's not an obsession, its a focus.

      Several other states which got high workforce ratings include such highly unionized states as Delaware, Indiana, Minnesota, New Hampshire and Wisconsin.

    4. Stab....the unions are just a bunch of organized bums. Most people don't get to see what they do to some of their 'scab' buddies.

  2. Are bike paths just nice or are they now necessary? I can't make up my mind. Ms. Jordan makes a compelling argument that they are necessary for all individuals to access travel. They are certainly safer for both the rider and the driver, but I would hate to loose my on street parking. Can't please everyone. I do agree if people biked and/or walked more this would reduce our dependence or foreign oil, and make us more secure in the long term. I would not oppose a bike lane if one were proposed for my neighborhood, but I won't be requesting one either.

  4. Gov. Perdue has been a horrid governor. She barely beat McCrory in the election even though there was a Democratic wave.

    We need to get a Republican governor in this time around, and a Republican General Assmebly. We've got a hundred years of ill conceived laws, regulations, and other restrictions on the books that we need to get rid of.

      I'll just add the above comment to the long list of his dimwitted comments.

    Horseback riders need horse paths, skateboards need skateboard paths and parks, rollerbladers needs special paths....there's a whole list of 'needs' for different groups of people. We can't be all things to all people. Let's stick to the basics concerning government subsidies.

    P.S. You gotsta be a liberal Democrat.

    2. Puny waves at La Jolla today. Black's had a NW swell last week and was really rockin'.

      It is exactly 2:09 PM.

    3. Never saw much in the way of waves at Santa Monica or Malibu. The water is too cold for someone accustomed to the southern part of Outer Banks.

    4. Yeah...that was my biggest shock 1st time in the Pacific...how can the water in sunny California be SO cold.

      Never surfed Santa Monica or Malibu. We mostly hit La Jolla because we lived right down the street at Pacific Beach. But Black's (yes, that's the nude beach), when it has a northwest or west swell, is the best surfing anywhere in Southern Cali.

      Long haul in, though.

  15. Evening folks!
    LTE 1: Scottsdale had lots of bike lanes with lots of riders and it worked quite well, a lot better than it does here sans bike lanes.
    LTE 2: It is good to see that alternative testing methods have been devised. Are they as accurate as using close human relatives? Is it more ethical to test on a near-human before on a human or have the first live trial on an actual human?
    Sum it up: Jobs are created when there is sufficient demand for goods and services to warrant additional help. A governor can certainly act as the state's chief marketing agent in luring companies to come here, and the state's high ranking for business environment helps. In agreement with Mr. Osmon.

      Post wherever you want, in whatever manner you want...just shut up all the bitching and moaning.
