Winston-Salem Journal LTE SU 01/08/12

Recent events
About the Dec. 27 Larry Wright cartoon depicting North Koreans wailing with the caption, "I wonder if I'm the group wailing over the death of ruler Kim Jong Il or the group wailing over the life of ruler son Kim Jong Un:" The appropriate answer is neither. The North Koreans are wailing over the harsh and brutal lives they had under the dictator and more of the same to come under the "Great Successor."
When I saw some news clips showing the North Koreans crying their hearts out in the public places, I thought these were the most hilarious public performance. They had to fake their sorrow in public or they would be branded as harboring hostility and disloyalty toward the revolution.
I recall reading reminiscences in the Hong Kong press about the same scene appearing in China when Chairman Mao passed away. In their hearts, they wanted to pop champagne and dance.
Columnist George Will rails against progressives for attempting "to impede development of the vast proven reserves of natural gas and oil here and in Canada" ("Ringing in a conservative year," Jan. 2). I just wonder whether Will would trade his residence for one year with a resident in Pennsylvania, where "fracking" for natural gas is going on. One man when he turns the faucet on can set the running water on fire. The water smells and tastes like natural gas. I am sure Will wouldn't mind a bit, right?

Patriotism
While picking up two large bags of trash along a secondary highway, as well as a vinyl window frame and three empty bags of deer corn, I wondered who would throw trash out of or off a vehicle. Are they citizens of this country, state and community? Would they refuse to pledge the U.S. flag as well? Would they believe themselves to be responsible citizens who respect the freedoms of this country? How do they honor U.S. citizenship?
After decades of promoting "Don't Be a Litter Bug," "Earth Day" celebrations and "How to Go Green" instructions, what else is needed?
Much has been written and assumed about patriotism and the actions reflecting a citizen's allegiance to this country. Certainly citizens who serve in the military offer their lives to protect our freedoms.
Flag-waving, pledging allegiance, July 4th picnics and fireworks and debates over prayer in public places pale to the day-in and day-out evidence of patriotism such as:
Making an effort to know the neighbor who is unlike you; volunteering in a public school or mentoring an at-risk high-school dropout; committing to elderly citizens as someone they can call upon; actively listening to both sides of an issue; choosing a new healthy habit (exercise); participating in a community organization to share one's talents and skills to expand community-building relationships; and, of course, disposing of trash in the appropriate, most-green manner.

A close read
Regarding your editorial "Gun Study: Common sense says limit concealed-carry" (Dec. 30), you made reference to The New York Times having examined North Carolina's concealed-gun permit, and despite of the use of the words "common sense" in your title, none seemed to have been used.
You were trying to use this information in support of a ban on concealed-carry weapons in public parks, and you cited three cases of crimes committed by individuals with concealed-carry permits. But none of these three events, as horrible as they were, occurred in a park.
You are being rather disingenuous in trying to make your case. Your reference to The New York Times was the first clue that a close read was necessary.

  1. #3.. here are some of the local reports on felons with gun permits in this state:

    http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/10537950/

"North Carolina does a pretty good job of screening people who apply for concealed weapons permits, but it does a poor job of keeping track of permit holders who later commit crimes, according to the report."

    http://www.wcnc.com/news/local/Failure-to-revoke--136283373.html

""When they convicted me they said I couldn't carry a gun anymore, the sheriff came and took all my guns," Wills said.

While Wills said he never thought about going out and buying another gun, he found out that his permit had not been revoked. "

  6. I recently saw the documentary Gasland...it was pretty scary stuff. Nothing says "Good morning" like lighting your tap water on fire.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I did see that. It is scary. We may just "frack" our way into history.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Romney: " As regards to the adds, I haven't seen them......but let me tell you this, the add I saw...." and then proceeded to list all the major points made in the add.

Sorry Mitt, you can't have it both ways.

Thanks Jerry, nice slam! I couldn't have done it much better myself.

I just happened to have noticed the same silly editorial myself. The Journal probably found some Forsyth Tech Law School Graduate to write that article.

  10. How is it a person can commit a felony, have all their guns taken away, but not get their permit revoked? (see above, wcnc)

    ReplyDelete
  11. "The permit system is through the sheriff's department and there are a 100 counties and its a pretty complex system," said Larry Hyatt, owner of Hyatt Gun Store on Wilkinson Boulevard in Charlotte.

"The system might need to be tightened up and there may be a computer system made to to get those guns out of their hands," said Hyatt.

    Ya think!

  12. How can someone, as president, take the national debt from 8 trillion dollars to almost 15, and still have the gall to run for reelection? I think that's the bigger question.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Bobby, I got back in last night from my trip to Kathmandu, Nepal, and dang if I didn't see that were sick. I hope you're doing better.

    ReplyDelete
  14. So what's the skinny? Is the Journal going to rip our forum away from us because of copyright infringement?

    ReplyDelete
  15. I'm doing much better,Bucky. Thanks. and I don't know.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Bobby, even the Journal knows it needs to take a hard right hand turn if it's going to survive. So why not hire Diane Cantor, what do you suggest? Should they go after Perez Hilton?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Bucky, get your facts straight, and then you can distort them as you please. When President Obama was inaugurated on Jan. 20,2009, the total public debt to the penny was 10,626,877,048,913.08 and not the 8 trillion you suggest. that does not include the debt created by the 2009 budget which was submitted by George W. Bush in October of 2008 and added 1.4 trillion to the debt.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I just presented the facts. You may draw your own conclusions.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Did you visit Freak St while in Khathmandu? That is where my coat of many colors came from.

    ReplyDelete
  20. One need not be a sociologist or math major to understand that at least 12trillion of the current debt was created before President Obama took office.

    ReplyDelete
  21. http://www.treasurydirect.gov/NP/BPDLogin?application=np

this is the daily history application for the public debt. You put in a specific date, like say 01/20/09 and it gives you the debt to the penny.

    ReplyDelete
  22. And now that you have the facts,to repeat that President Obama increased the debt from 8 to 15, well, again, I let others draw their own conclusions.

  24. Bobby..., only a liberal would 'try' to defend the indefensible. That's why so many liberal Democrats are defense lawyers.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I hope they can get Perez Hilton at the Journal. He'd fit in so well.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Bucky, I wasn't trying to defend you.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Dick Cheney certainly tried to defend his record and he is not liberal.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hey Bobby, you better be nice to Mitt. He'll probably be the next president. And surprise, he's not a big fan of gay marriage. Ut oh!

    ReplyDelete
  29. It going to take an all out liberal media blitz to get 'ol Rocky Top (as in rocks for brains in the ability to lead) back in!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Good 'ol Rock Top.....Rocky Top Tenneeseeeeeeeee! The song is better than the leader by the same name.

    ReplyDelete
  31. It's going to be a 'Pac-Man' kinda day. I can feel it coming on! Where's 'Pokey' a/k/a Rush at?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Rutrow, yourself, I have no desire to get married. Besides with Romney, one never knows what one will get.

-Gov. Willard Mitt Romney, R-Mass., issued at least 189 special-issue, one-day marriage licenses to same-sex couples in 2005 alone. These documents let these 378 people enjoy nuptials officiated by relatives, friends, and others who normally do not perform weddings.

  33. Bucky, this summer I want to participate in the MLB All-Star Home Run Hitting Contest. With you as my pitcher, I'm assured a victory. Care to make History?

    ReplyDelete
  34. No Bobby...you're too good for me, I'm sure. I've seen enough of your prowess in the investigative field to know not to challenge you. If you'd stop hanging out with people like Rush, the Forsyth Tech Law School graduate, and Nancy Drew, you might be something.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Well I like hanging out with anyone, from felons to CEO's of Fortune 500, and in some cases they're one in the same.

    ReplyDelete

  37. You are right about that. It's a Ron Paul super pac video specifically made for the internet.

    ReplyDelete
  38. It's a commercial with a $100,000 ad buy in NH.

    ReplyDelete
  39. It would be foolish to buy an expensive national add on MSNBC, when all you want to do is buy local adds for the NH primary.

    ReplyDelete
  40. and you can run em free worldwide on youtube

    ReplyDelete
  41. Come on, bucky. Even if you ain't got a curve ball or slider, the least you could do is throw me an overhand.

    ReplyDelete
  42. @Bucky's 1038hrs: Yes, you COULD have done much better. According to YOU.

@Bucky's 1050hrs: the answer is - - - G. Dub Bush. If he could have, he would have. BTW: Did you happen to have watched the movie "W"?

    @Bob's 1111hrs, 1112hrs, 1114hrs, 1117hrs . . .
AW HECK, all others, esp. 1222hrs: Hear, hear.

I don't usually make any New Year's resolutions, but I've decided to adopt Bucky's credo and resolved to accept that OTHERS views of me, (REAL TIME & VIRTUAL TIME), is THEIR problem and not mine.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Wow, says they made a 100k ad buy in NH and they've only raised $97k. I wonder what Mr Paul thinks of deficit spending?

    ReplyDelete
  44. The last NY resolution was 20 years ago and I've kept it. Not to make any NY resolutions. I just make them when I wake up now, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Although, had Moses known Bucky, there would have been 11 Commandments, so perhaps one more New Year's Resolution would do no harm.

    ReplyDelete
  46. . . . and any labels I'm given I embrace. . . 'cause most of the time that's all they are is labels.

    ReplyDelete
  47. . . . much of the time the ONLY thing that the weak minded can do is labEL and FILE AWAY.

    ReplyDelete
  48. lol, I've been stamped so many times, I look like a well traveled passport.

    ReplyDelete
  49. LOL!! Broaden your horizons. That's what liberalism is all about, after all.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I'm fixin' to broaden my waist. Baked chicken stuffed with spinach and feta.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Rielle, and he wear's the red wristband too.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Upon further review, the wristband on the arm has be overruled. Still 4th down.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Perhaps I shouldn't multitask.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I enlarged Mr Britton and thought part of his coat sleeve was a wristband.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Man....I didn't even get it. Oh well, once in a great while I miss some things. Is that Tim? Never seen him before in my life.

These crack investigators we've got in this forum couldn't track down Barack Obama.

Oh lordy, lordy, lordy.....I wish you guys would give up the business. You're going to do some serious damage to my side.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I know that different colors represents different causes . . . what does red represent.

BTW: red is my favorite color.

    ReplyDelete
  57. @Bucky: How will a picture of Tim Britton, someone who you claim you don't know, do some "serious damage" to your side?

    ReplyDelete
  58. Give up! Give up! Two words that have never crossed my lips.

    ReplyDelete
  59. . . . hmmmm . . . the closer I look, the more Tim Britton looks like Barney Frank, don'tcha think?

    ReplyDelete
  60. Okay....I give up. If you want to 'believe' that is a picture of me. Have at it. You can't change stupid.

    ReplyDelete
  61. lol, that is hilarious, I just wrote it looks like a computer aged photo of Barney Frank but didn't publish it.

    ReplyDelete
  62. and stupid doesn't want to change. I've never tried stupid before. It's so much fun.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Okay Bobby, when are you going to give us a break and take down the Tin Man's picture?

    ReplyDelete
  64. No wonder you're such a jolly person. But how do you keep it up on a daily basis. You must have super hero status.

    ReplyDelete
  65. That's scarecrow to you, cause some people with no brains do a whole lot of talkin.

    ReplyDelete
  66. @Bob's 1550hrs: Stupid WON'T change. That's just who he is.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I wouldn't go with Oz metaphors, Bucky. Your dealing with expert here on all things Dorothy.

    ReplyDelete
  68. . . . or does BARNEY FRANK look like TIM BRITTON . . .

Things that make you go HMMMMM . . .

    ReplyDelete
  69. and now I have something that makes me go MMMMMMH! Dinner

    ReplyDelete
  70. That's fine Bobby. I thought better of you. I should have know you're just like the other liberal morons in here.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Hey!!!

    HMMMMM spelled backwards is MMMMMH!!!!!

    Y-U-M-M-M-M-M!

    ReplyDelete
  72. I think I'd rather be Tim Britton, than have the character of Rielle Hunter. But, I'm still not Tim.

    Nancy Drew strikes out again.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Heeee Heee..you gotta love it. So many morons, so little time.

    ReplyDelete
  74. @Bucky's 1623: Right back atcha.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Bobby, you're smart enough. Your problems is the company you indirectly keep.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Glad the Bob and buckeye show was back on today. Drove my mom to FLorida on wick at Winne Dixie

Sorry cant play more but glad Bob is better.

    ReplyDelete
  77. We're all glad Bob is back. I just wish Bobby wasn't dating Nancy Drew now. He always made better decisions before she came along. Now he has jumped into liberal kiddy pool.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Thank you everyone. I'm a die-hard liberal. :)

    ReplyDelete
  79. We all know that Bobby. Just keep yourself out of the hospital. Staying away from Nancy Drew might be a good idea. She, obviously, adversely affects your thinking.

    ReplyDelete
  80. As always, just in from a party and find this disgusting post.

Buckram is an inert material used for binding library books, but it is clearly a higher order of being than Bucky boy. And even though it is below stupid, it knows better than to show its ass in public.

    Only its spine.
